SALGREH NOTICES

Dear Readers,

As we reported last week, Phiroze Palkhivala has joined mainstream politics and takes a

stand for the Aam Aadmi Party. It is refreshing to see the newspapers across Mumbai and

the country cover his campaigning style and underline his Zoroastrian lineage as part of

his honest DNA. Of course, the Dance of Democracy is a heavy-duty one and his further

role shall mostly be determined by the way the AAP fares in the face of power houses like

the NCP and the BJP and its alliances. Nonetheless, an able-minded Community member

who volunteers himself and his efforts for the good of the nation, or even the Community, is a good sign.

The BPP Elections are closing in, and much like the politics at the Central level, the Dance here is delicate

and deliberate. Money is being spent, big shots are paying special attention to the groups everywhere, and

alliances are being forged. The Code of Conduct is out… Quite frankly, not unlike the Santacruz-Chembur

Link Road (which was finally thrown open to the public yesterday), the Code looks drab and not worth the

ridiculous extensions to the deadline it has taken to see the light of day. I do wish more people would react to

it with honesty and some strong feedback. (Those letters that have come will appear next week.)

Across the country, Salgrehs draw the religious to the Fire. I hope that in our collective prayers and the

therapeutic melody of Dasturjis reciting prayers, we wish for the drama to cease and the Community to grow

in harmony and happiness. Take the effort to visit these Jashans and celebrations and keep our Agiaries warm

with the presence of families.

Nice to see friends across the country post selfies, their ‘I just voted’ fingers proudly displayed. It is a great

year for youth as more people than usual are actually moving toward the booths. Enjoy your weekend, plan for

your trip to the polls on the 24th (Mumbaikars) and keep us in the loop!

JASHAN AT PANTHANKY BAUG

On Sunday, the 13th of April 2014,

Roj Marespand Mah Ava, our holy month of Ava Mahino saw a gathering of over 70 people at the Panthaky Baug Kuva (well) to attend a Jashan Ceremony at 11.00 am. The well was enveloped by lit divas and a beautiful garland

some very pretty chalk/rangoli, all of which contributed to the joyful, pious atmosphere.

The Jashan Ceremony was performed by two priests, Eric Dastur and Jimmy Dastur, of the Malcolm Baug Agiary. Celebrations of Ava Yazad Nu Parab are held year after year in the holy Mahino of Ava by the Panthaky Baug Welfare Centre (PWC) along with the residents of Panthanky Baug.

Post the Jashan Ceremony, all the attendants held a Hum Bandagi headed by the two priests with recitations of 2 Yatha Ahu Vairyos and 1 Ashem Vohu.

Donations for the Jashan Ceremony were collected by Dinshaw Elavia inside the huge shamiana put up at the Kuva premises, and the chasni was distributed among all the devotees present.

After obtaining his BSc Degree in 1955 in Mumbai, he moved to Toronto and earned his BASc and MASc in 1958 and 1960 respectively, from the University of Toronto.

Post his academic excellence, he joined the Canadian Atomic Energy of Canada to begin his long and outstanding career in nuclear engineering, until he retired in 1995 and continued as an Engineer Emeritus.

He earned many awards from the nuclear industry and other engineering organisations and societies in recognition of his many outstanding contributions, which are documented in over

Adi loved to apply his skills to improving reactor-physics methods. He was the developer of the Cerberus computer code to

Friday, the 4th of April 2014, Behram Roj Ava Mahino, will be a day

to remember, for on this day, after a span of almost 20 years, a Parsi Zoroastrian Navjote was performed for two daughters of the Anklesaria family in Kota, Rajasthan.

Today, there are only two Parsi families in Kota. Adi Anklesaria and Cavas Anklesaria reside in this small Rajasthani city along with their wives, Lily and Pervin.

Cavas has two sons, Kurush and Kaizad, and the Navjote ceremony was of the two granddaughters of Cavas.

It all started with a Jashan Ceremony performed at Cavas’s residence a day prior to the Navjote by Er. Marazban Pavri of Thane Agiary and Er. Aspi Antia of Wadiaji AstashBehram, both of whom agreed to come down to Kota from Mumbai to perform the

Ceremony started at about

4.00 pm for Zerlina Kaizad Anklesaria, and was followed by the second Navjote at 5.30 pm for Evana Kurush Anklesaria. The Dasturjis were very patient with the little ones as they prayed very well along with them during entire Ceremony. What was even more astounding was that it was probably after eons that more than 50 Bawajis had assembled together at one time in the town of Kota! The day following the Navjote saw the Dasturjis performing a Jashan at Adi Anklesaria’s residence. What was especially surprising was when Adi Anklesaria’s

daughters-in-law Sanaya and Arish mentioned that this

performed at their bungalow, and it was all courtesy the Navjote!

All in all, the function was a great coming together of the Parsi Community, and it was especially nice to see two little Parsi girls inducted into the Zoroastrian faith in an altogether different setting.

On Saturday, April 5th 2014, WZO India organised a grand function at Albless

Baug, ‘An Evening with Yesteryears’ Sportspersons,’ followed by a felicitation ceremony for Mobed Sahebs presently performing the NIRANGDIN Ceremony. The occasion was attended by Mr. Dinshaw Mehta, Chairman of the BPP, and his wife, Pansy; Mr. Yezdi Desai, Trustee of the BPP along with his wife Anahita; and Ms. Armaity Tirandaz, Trustee of the BPP.

At the outset, President Mr. Rusi Bhumgara welcomed the large gathering stating that WZO India has a small Mobeds’ fund of Rs. 20 lakhs, the interest from which was used to felicitate Mobed Sahebs performing Nirangdin Kriya. Each Mobed was presented with a shawl and a purse. Approximately Rs. 3 lakhs were distributed to the Mobeds by WZO India from the Mani and Dr. Porus Taraporewala Mobed Fund

Vazifdar. He also thanked Roshan and Percy Lentin, Peekay Wines’ Tanaz Kerawalla, and others for their support.

Dasturji Peshotan Hormazdiyar Mirza, the Chief Guest, in his very lucid address, said that sportsmen contribute to the physical treasure of the Community while Mobeds contribute to the spiritual treasure of the Community. The Dasturji educated the audience about the Nirangdin Ceremony, its importance, and the various rituals that are to be strictly followed when performing the same in a ritualistically pure

environment like an Agiary or Atash Behram. He spoke of how the Nirang has curative powers and how the Mobeds performing Nirangdin have to take a strict Barashnum (Nahan) for 18 days, as it requires intricate discipline. In today’s times, he stated that there were very few Mobeds who performed Nirangdin, and hence, all

those who did so deserved to be acknowledged

and honoured by the Community,

as they were doing their best

t o keep the tradition of the Nirangdin Ceremony alive at a time of acute shortage of Mobeds. Ervad Fardoonji Turel of Surat, who performed 130 Nirangdins (the highest number of Nirangdins, equal to approximately seven years of his life), was specially commended for guiding and training several young Mobeds in performing the Nirangdin Ceremonies. The youngest, Ervad Rohintan Nozer Mehenty, created history by performing the Nirangdin Ceremony at the tender age of 10.

Thereafter, Ervad Pervez Bajan Panthaky Saheb of Mewawalla Agiary, who was also felicitated, addressed

the gathering stating that Mobeds who perform the Nirangdin Ceremony are products of the Athornan Madressas and are akin to graduates of prestigious universities like Oxford

and Cambridge. He noted how the Dadar Athornan Madressa was set up in 1919 by donations collected from the Community, how post that, Mr. Merwanji Cama donated Rs. 25 lakhs to set up the M. F. Cama Athornan Madressa at Andheri, and how from the portals of both these madressas hundreds of Dasturjis were trained and went on to became Sampoorna Mobeds who served the Community for years together. He lamented the sorry state of affairs prevailing today,

where the Mobeds were not taking up full-time Mobedi, thereby resulting in an acute decline in the number of Mobeds available to the Community. He added that this was because the Behdins did not take proper care of the priestly class and so the Mobeds were forced to turn to other professions where they excelled and improved their livelihood. He therefore sincerely lauded the efforts and the intention of WZO India to honour the priests, something he believed would be a source of inspiration to other Mobeds. He also pointed out that recently, Ervad Burjorji Antia – a product of the M. F. Cama Athornan Institute – magnanimously donated Rs. 1 Crore to the BPP’s fund for priests, an example worthy of emulation.

After the speeches, Mr. Rusi Bhumgara, along with other Committee

and felicitated yesteryear sports people. Farokh Engineer, on behalf of the sportsmen, saluted the Mobeds,

Zoroastrians,” and the function ended with a sumptuous dinner catered by none other than Tanaz Godiwalla.

On Friday, the 11th of April 2014, the Cumballa Hill High School held its

Annual Prize Distribution Event at the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium, Breach Candy.

It was truly an evening to remember. Aside from the prize distribution ceremony, there were speeches on various interesting topics and themes followed by a bunch of interesting skits along with some super fun song and dance!

The evening began with a short speech by the Principal Mrs. Bapsy Chubb in which she expressed regret that marks dominate the entire process of learning due to which children study a lot but retain very little.

Mrs. Chubb then introduced the Chief Guest Ms. Zena Sorabjee in most glowing terms; a role-model for the society, an extremely

knowledgeable person, a counselor, and

education. She feels passionately about children and her

illustrated children’s book The Right To Be is a must read for children as well as the adults. The book tries to acquaint children with the Universal Declaration of

Human Rights. In a short but very

interesting speech interspersed with humour, Ms Sorabjee wished

that the education system would free the students from the quagmire of marks. She went on to release the school magazine Fortuna. This was followed by the

investiture ceremony and then the annual school prizes.

A highlight of the evening was the musical revue titled ‘LIVE LIFE,’ a song and dance musical interspersed with little cameos about various aspects and values of life like love, caring, happiness, sharing, surviving, accepting challenges, and overcoming stress.

Bala NandgaonkarMNS

South Mumbai MNS Candidate

P.T.: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into contesting elections...B.N.: I started my journey as a social worker 30 years back. In 1995, I was elected Corporator, and since 1999, I have been an MLA for 4 terms. For a brief while, I was even Minister of State for Home. Over the course of my career, I have worked for diverse sections of people and I know Mumbai, as a city, in and out. P.T.: What issues are you passionate about?

B.N.: Going into this election, I will be focussing on issues like keeping the City clean and green,

transport issues, redeveloping old buildings, addressing railway passengers’ complaints and

concerns, and enhancing the security of senior citizens. P.T.: What drew you to the Parsi Community?B.N.: I was an employee with Air India for 15 years, so over the course of my time there, I’ve made a whole bunch of Parsi friends, a lot of whom reside in the Byculla and Mazagaon area of South Mumbai. What drew me to them was really their frank and prompt nature, and it’s something I admire about them.

P.T.: Should you win from this Constituency, what do you envisage for the Parsi Community?B.N.: I actually have quite a long list of things to be done for the welfare of the Parsi Community. For one, I intend on addressing and enhancing the security of the senior citizens of the Community by developing a security system to protect them and their p r o p e r t i e s through the MP funds. I also plan on ensuring a hassle-free system so far as getting

hold of basic amenities is concerned. For a long time, I have been thinking of the

possibility of setting up a mobile hospital in every

Parsi Colony, something I believe very strongly in. P.T.: Are you going to be a

hands-on leader with such a small Community as ours?B.N.: Most

will personally be in touch with the representatives of the Community and take the time to gather updates and suggestions for further betterment of their well-being. P.T.: Thank you, Mr. Nandgaonkar.Visit him on FB and www.balanandgaokar.

ZOROASTRIANISM AS PERCIEVED

BY OTHERS

We Parsi Zoroastrians are trying to undermine our own

great Religion today through bickering and dogmatism. Throughout history, countless belonging to other faiths have praised it and given it its due and rightful place as one of the greatest religions in the world. Great minds have understood its universal message and have acknowledged the fact

many modern religions. Our Persian ancestors were liberal thinkers and did not have closed minds.

Ancient Western writers have neither given the rightful place to the Persians for their glorious deeds, nor have they given Zoroastrianism its

later day religions with its unshakeable teachings of morality and ethics. It is only after 18th century that Western scholars started to acknowledge the contribution of Zoroastrian thought to other religions.

Diakiki, the court poet of Shah Nuh II, who was to have written the Shah-Nameh (but unfortunately, after completing only about 1000 couplets, was murdered by a slave), had this to say of the faith of Zoroaster, “Of all the good and evil of the world, Dakiki has chosen four things to Himself: ruby lips, the lyre’s sound, red wine, and the religion of Zoroaster.”

19TimeJot measures the time

difference between recurring events in your life. E.g. if you have to visit your dentist every 6 months, the app will show you the time elapsed since your last visit!

So, if you have to change the oil in your car every 8 months, or service your Air Conditioner every quarter, or handle any such recurring tasks - TimeJot is for

easily make out when you had performed this task last and when

it is due to be done next. You don’t have to browse through the Calendar; do some calculations or do any guesswork for the same.

Ideal for busy bodies who just don’t have the time to track their periodic routines!

Dear Mamaiji, You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Asfandarmad Roj. What does that mean?Dear Dikri,Today is Asfandarmad Roj. The Amesha Spenta associated with this is also called Spenta Armaity, who presides over the welfare of the Earth. Spenta Armaity also stands for an attitude of Piety toward the Source of Being and the Ultimate Truth. Ethically, it is the attitude of Benevolence, a concern for the Good. It is characterised as Right-Mindedness. This Amesha Spenta (AS) is female in energy. In the Calendar, this day follows the day of Shahrewar, who symbolises the Sky and the Ultimate Salvation. Thus, we see the pointing towards the Male-Female, Yin-Yang, aspects of the Material Universe. Always express your gratitude to Spenta Armaity, or Mother Earth as we get all our material things through the earth, directly or indirectly. And also care for the well- being of our Planet. It is the only one we can inhabit, as of now.

Parsi Times - English and Gujarati. Regd. No. MH/MR/South-348/2012-14. Published on 19th April, 2014,

on every Saturday.

P.T.: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken the nation by storm, giving a sense of renewed faith in honesty and integrity… values dear to our Community. What drew you to the Party and the madness that is an Indian Election?P.Palkhivala.: Politics was the furthest thing from my

approached me, I was hesitant to enter the murky world of politics. In order to convince me, the lady said, “It’s time good people like you venture beyond your comfort zones and think of what you can do for the country.” This got me thinking. This

we in India have been exposed to a principle-based Party. A Party that was trying to do

all the things that I believed in. If I did not grab this chance, I would not be true to myself. I had been attending the Party meetings since December. What I found there, were

very diverse minds, from very different walks of life, all united to make a change, to do something for the nation. It is this spirit that pervades every volunteer in the Party and, for me, it is inspiring to be part of this revolution. P.T.: What are your strengths in this election?

P.Palkhivala: Arvind Kejriwal uses the word ‘neeyat’, which means intention. I feel each person from the 18-year old volunteer to the grey-haired 85-year old Party worker, are all enthused by the desire to work for the nation. They are not into politics because they want to get something out of the system but because they have a lot to give. With the AAP it is our intent that is our strength. Our intention is to clean up the country, to clean up governance and the administrative machinery, our

intent is to let the ‘aam aadmi’ decide how his tax money will be used and for citizens to be involved in decisions that affect his life. It is an idea whose time has come. We see it in the response we get from the youth, from the man on the street, from the women and children. People do not treat us as an ordinary Party. They come out of homes, shops, and colleges to greet us. This party has shaken India out her political apathy. The ‘India ka kuch nahi hone wala hai’ feeling has been replaced by a new hope and a new

euphoria. This is our strength. We have made people believe that change is possible.P.T.: Do you have a message for the Zoroastrian Community who are voting across this country?P.Palkhivala: India was conceived as a secular state. India has opened her arms and welcomed our Community into her fold. Now is the time for each of us to forget the divisions and see ourselves

The Parsis have, over the years, been intrinsically involved

with setting up institutions of great worth in India. We also have a reputation for honesty and straight forwardness in our dealings. This is our time to stand by a party whose ideals match the ideals of our Community and support it in full measure. P.T.: Your Constituency is

new age, the hip and the arts and culture scene. How do you identify with your voters there and what are you going to promise that is focused on their needs?P.Palkhivala: There are lot of

wonderful, forward-thinking people in the Constituency who have come forward publically to endorse our party. These are people from the Cine Artistes Association, musicians, singers, DJs and the LGBTQ community. I think the good thing about these people is that they are not thinking of narrow personal interests but about the nation as a whole. As a person, my interests are completely in consonance with what you call ‘new age’. Spirituality, yoga, raw food, the organic movement, cycling, music, theatre are or have been

life. They are not fads, but things I believe in so I will do my best to promote and talk about these along with other, more important local issues. P.T.: You are up against two very strong women and more importantly seasoned politicians… any thoughts on that? P.Palkhivala: I think India is now allergic to its seasoned politicians. AAP is like a breath of fresh air in the polluted political scene. I think the plank of honesty we stand on is our biggest asset and it is what is going to see us through. P.T.: ‘Aapre joi lesu’, leaving things to others is very common in the Community these days and having you participate in mainstream politics is a very refreshing change. Thoughts? P.Palkhivala: This is not particular to the Parsis. It is the malaise that has pervaded all of India. But it is an understandable sentiment. Till now, most people felt that politics is too dirty a game to be involved in. With the AAP this perception has changed. All sorts of people have been drawn to the politics. Professionals, businessmen, artistes, have all put their lives on hold for this election. This party has brought back the idealism that we thought had died with the struggle for Indian Independence. So, it’s not just me. The AAP is a revolution that has taken the country by storm.

Till now, most people felt that politics is too dirty a game to be involved in. With the AAP this perception has changed. All sorts of people have been drawn to the politics.
