Privacy implications of the Facebook Messenger app iOS vs.Android

Jack Wallen examined the privacy implications of the Facebook Messenger app on Android.

When it was launched for the first time, this app asks users for access to a huge amount of

information on their phone which includes

Camera to take pictures and video.

Microphone to record audio.

Location data.

Contacts and address book.

This led to many users to be extremely concerned about the grocery list of permissions that it

asks for. Some skeptics even say Facebook use to record everything the app hears which is

though technically accurate but extremely misleading.

Unlike the Android app, Facebook Messenger app iOS doesn't ask for permission to use all

those items right at the front because of the way Apple handles user privacy.

Facebook messenger apps iOS only ask for access to certain user data when the app needs it.

For example, while the Facebook Messenger apps ask for access to the user location when you

first go to send a message, it’s your wish you want to share it or not. Also access to the cameraand iOS Camera Roll is only requested if a user actually attempts to send photos.

Again, access to the iOS microphone is only requested if the user attempts to send an audio

message or want to begin a voice chat session.in this app, access to the user's contact information

is only requested if the user try to sync their address book with Facebook.

iOS users can also retroactively authorize or de-authorize the various privacy settings later-on.

For this they go in the Settings app under Privacy and can manually de-authorize the access of

individual apps to various settings like:

Location

Bluetooth sharing

Motion activity

Calendars

Reminders

Photos

contacts

Microphone

Although the Facebook messenger app for iOS behave similarly as for Android version but as

Apple focus more on users privacy, this app seeks user permission once for accessing any

information, which makes it more invasive then it really is.
