The e-cigarettes debate continuesIs vape a tool for quitting smoking or a dangerous tobacco product?

• Bahrain looks to determine health risks

TDT | Manama

Electronic cigarettes or “vape” have attracted at-tention around the world

as a potential alternative solu-tion to the decades-long battle against tobacco use.

Unlike traditional cigarettes, which are lit by a flame and burned to create smoke, these new smoking devices instead release an aerosol, sometimes referred to as “airborne”.

In theory, e-cigarettes might boost the chances of success to solve tobacco smoking; in fact, it is generally agreed that vaping is safer than smoking cancer-caus-ing traditional cigarettes, which kill up to half of all lifetime users, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The world body maintains there is insufficient evidence that e-cigarettes will reduce the prevalence of traditional cig-arettes and urges countries to consider regulating and prohib-iting this new smoking trend.

Researchers, however, have found that vape contains harm-ful chemicals and toxins, and the unregulated e-cigarette manu-facturing markets act as a gate-way to nicotine addiction.

In Bahrain, vape shops have mushroomed over the past few years, attracting and giving easy access to all users of the fla-voured e-cigarettes.

But even as e-cigarette sales have boomed in the Kingdom, health concerns have mush-roomed, too.

Vaping is universally con-demned because of fear that it contains harmful chemicals and narcotics like cigarette smok-ing, which cause cancer, heart disease, stroke and many other deadly diseases.

More importantly, the ques-

tion on how to best regulate e-cigarettes remains unresolved.

This may have prompted MPs during Parliament’s weekly ses-sion on Tuesday to vote unan-imously in favour of requiring vape juices to undergo extensive tests before being granted entry into Bahrain.

Only those that can demon-strate “minimal risks” to public health will be permitted to stay on the market.

But what do we really know about vaping?

An e-cigarette is a battery-op-erated smoking apparatus, sometimes called a vaporiser.

In contrast to traditional rolled tobacco products — like cigarettes and cigars — e-cig-arettes do not contain tobacco and do not produce smoke.

E-cigarettes usually carry a liquid, sometimes referred to as e-juice or e-liquid, which is a mixture of propylene glycol,

glycerin, flavours and sometimes nicotine. This liquid is almost always packaged inside a de-tachable cartridge.

This cartridge is one of the central components in an e-cig-arette, along with the atomiser and the battery. Atomisers are powered by the battery and generate the necessary heat to vaporise the liquid in the e-cig-arette.

This vapor will deliver the in-tended taste and sensation to the user. As the user inhales, a sensor will activate the atomiser and the vaporised liquid – sim-ilar in appearance to smoke – is drawn into the mouth.

There is a fierce debate re-garding e-cigarettes in modern society. That debate is likely to intensify as these devices grow in popularity and profitability.

Until such questions are an-swered, it seems premature to advocate strongly for e-cigarette use, and important that regula-tors develop guidelines to limit vaping by adolescents.

Even with so many data al-ready available, the debate over e-cigarettes has been divisive and sometimes emotional.

And the pivotal question of

whether electronic cigarettes are inadvertently helping to wipe out smoking among young people has become a polarising topic: embraced by some ex-perts, dismissed by others.

Proponents of e-cigarettes see a way to help the millions who are trying to quit smok-ing and stem the grave harm caused by tobacco. They believe the most realistic approach is to shift smokers away from burn-ing tobacco towards less-risky products.

On the other hand, vaping crit-ics fear the growing industry will create a generation of e-cigarette

addicts. They say there is no safe way to use tobacco or nicotine and quitting should be the goal.

(Ending)The right policies on e-cig-

arettes — ones that minimise risks — should be built on solid evidence, not on opinion and vitriol.

It may be too early to say whether e-cigarettes will make a major difference in helping adult or even teen smokers to quit.

Mazars launches worldwide rebrandMazars rolls out rebrand in over 90 countries and territories

• Last year, the firmrecorded revenues of Euro 1.8 billion

• The rebrandrecognises Mazars’ evolution into an international group

TDT | Paris

Mazars, the interna-tional tax, audit and advisory firm, has un-

veiled a new global brand iden-tity, marking a key milestone in the firm’s evolution.

The launch, Mazars said, is on the back of steady, bal-anced growth and success-ful expansion, which reflects its strong position in the marketplace.

Hervé Hélias, CEO & Chair-man of Mazars Group, said: “I’m very excited to reveal our new brand identity and posi-tioning, after two years of deep and broad consultation with our partners, employees, cli-ents and stakeholders. It re-flects who we are today and confirms our aspirations for the type of firm we want to be in the future.”

Last year, the firm, having a presence in over 90 countries

and territories with nearly 25,000 colleagues, recorded revenues of Euro 1.8 billion, up 10.4 per cent from a year ago, helped by a strong 9.0pc organic growth.

This international expan-sion is reflected in the geo-graphic spread of the group’s revenue sources: more than a third of Mazars’ fee income now comes from outside Eu-rope. Asia-Pacific enjoyed the highest growth rate of 22.6 per cent in 2018/2019, and this re-gion now represents approx-imately 15pc of Mazars total revenues.

Commenting on Mazars’ growth and expansion, Hervé Hélias said: “In 75 years, our guiding principles haven’t changed, but our firm has. We have doubled in size in the past

ten years, and the diversity of our offerings, clients, and tal-ent has flourished as we have grown.”

Fadhel al Shehabi, the resi-dent partner of Mazars Bahrain, said, “Mazars is an internation-al and multicultural partner-ship that continues to grow and extend its reach around the world. The rebrand helps Mazars present itself more consistently across the globe, whilst celebrating its local roots.”

Cécile Kossoff, Chief brand, marketing and communications officer, Mazars, who led the global rebranding initiative, comments: “This new identi-ty is built on the firm’s DNA, reinforcing who we are, how we work and what makes us different.”

Oil prices slip as US inventory build stokes fears of supply glutReuters | London

Oil prices eased yesterdayafter a surprise build-up

in US crude stockpiles stoked concerns about a global sup-ply glut and a spike in global COVID-19 cases fuelled fears of a stalled oil demand recovery.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 were at $42.53 a barrel, down 63 cents, or 1.46 per cent, as of 1349 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude CLc1 futures slipped 75 cents, or 1.8%, to $40.95. Both benchmarks rose in the previ-ous session.

Crude inventories rose by 584,000 barrels in the week to Oct. 16 to 490.6 million bar-rels, data from industry group the American Petroleum Insti-tute (API) showed, compared with analysts’ expectations in a Reuters poll for a draw of 1 million barrels.

Data from the US Ener-

gy Information Administra-tion (EIA) is due out later on Wednesday.

Adding to pressure, world-wide COVID-19 cases crossed 40 million on Tuesday, with some parts of Europe imposing renewed lockdown measures.

On the supply side, Russia’s energy minister said on Tues-day it was too early to discuss the future of global oil produc-tion curbs beyond December, less than a week after saying plans to scale back existing output restrictions should pro-ceed.

The e-cigarettes debate continuesIs vape a tool for quitting smoking or a dangerous tobacco product?

• Bahrain looks todetermine health risks

TDT | Manama

Electronic cigarettes or“vape” have attracted at-tention around the world

as a potential alternative solu-tion to the decades-long battleagainst tobacco use.

Unlike traditional cigarettes, which are lit by a flame andburned to create smoke, thesenew smoking devices insteadrelease an aerosol, sometimesreferred to as “airborne”.

In theory, e-cigarettes mightboost the chances of success to solve tobacco smoking; in fact, itis generally agreed that vaping issafer than smoking cancer-caus-ing traditional cigarettes, which kill up to half of all lifetimeusers, according to the WorldHealth Organisation (WHO).

The world body maintainsthere is insufficient evidencethat e-cigarettes will reduce the prevalence of traditional cig-arettes and urges countries toconsider regulating and prohib-iting this new smoking trend.

Researchers, however, havefound that vape contains harm-ful chemicals and toxins, and theunregulated e-cigarette manu-facturing markets act as a gate-way to nicotine addiction.

In Bahrain, vape shops havemushroomed over the past few years, attracting and giving easy access to all users of the fla-voured e-cigarettes.

But even as e-cigarette saleshave boomed in the Kingdom, health concerns have mush-roomed, too.

Vaping is universally con-demned because of fear that itcontains harmful chemicals and narcotics like cigarette smok-ing, which cause cancer, heartdisease, stroke and many otherdeadly diseases.

More importantly, the ques-

tion on how to best regulatee-cigarettes remains unresolved.

This may have prompted MPs during Parliament’s weekly ses-sion on Tuesday to vote unan-imously in favour of requiringvape juices to undergo extensivetests before being granted entry into Bahrain.

Only those that can demon-strate “minimal risks” to public health will be permitted to stay on the market.

But what do we really knowabout vaping?

An e-cigarette is a battery-op-erated smoking apparatus,sometimes called a vaporiser.

In contrast to traditionalrolled tobacco products — likecigarettes and cigars — e-cig-arettes do not contain tobaccoand do not produce smoke.

E-cigarettes usually carry aliquid, sometimes referred toas e-juice or e-liquid, which isa mixture of propylene glycol,

glycerin, flavours and sometimesnicotine. This liquid is almostalways packaged inside a de-tachable cartridge.

This cartridge is one of thecentral components in an e-cig-arette, along with the atomiserand the battery. Atomisers arepowered by the battery andgenerate the necessary heat tovaporise the liquid in the e-cig-arette.

This vapor will deliver the in-tended taste and sensation tothe user. As the user inhales, asensor will activate the atomiserand the vaporised liquid – sim-ilar in appearance to smoke – is drawn into the mouth.

There is a fierce debate re-garding e-cigarettes in modernsociety. That debate is likely tointensify as these devices growin popularity and profitability.

The incident unfolded at the stadium in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, after large crowds assembled in a bid to secure travel permission after the nearby Pakistani consulate resumed services following a seven-month hiatus due to the pandemic. To avoid overwhelming the visa centre, applicants had been directed to Jalalabad’s nearby football stadium to hand over passports and paperwork, provincial governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told reporters.

Grandma, 99, gets back to computer games after beating COVID-19• Got infected at her 99th birthday party

Reuters | Madrid

When 99-year old F l o r e n t i n a

Martin caught the coronavi-rus in Sep -tember, her grand-daugh-ter’s greatest fear was not that the dis-ease would kill her, but that she would end up alone on an emergency ward.

“I always thought loneliness would finish her off before the virus because she’s afraid of be-ing left alone, especially in the hospital,” Noelia Valle said.

She thinks her grandmoth-er probably got infected at her 99th birthday party on Sept. 16, when the family went outside to enjoy the fine weather with drinks on a terrace.

“I think it must have been there at some point when we were all close together without a mask,” Valle said.

A few days later, Martin be-

gan to feel weak and retreated to bed.

Exposure to contaminated rapeseed oil when she was younger left Martin with life-long health problems, height-ening her vulnerability to res-piratory complications from COVID-19.

But she only developed mild symptoms and was able to re-cuperate at home in Madrid, supported by her family, her carer Olga Arauz and her dog, a half-deaf Havanese called Luna.

Now she is back to watch-ing her favourite TV shows and playing games on a tablet with her five-year old great-grandson Pedro.

“I’m well. I’m really OK,” Mar-tin said, though her memories of the virus are hazy.

Despite her grandmother’s full recovery, Valle, who is a bi-ologist, still insists on wearing a mask when she stops by for a visit. “I don’t want to let my guard down but of course I feel a huge sense of relief.”

Florentina Martin is helped by her caregiver Olga Arauz and her granddaughter Noelia Valle at the entrance of her home in Pinto, near Madrid, Spain

With nearly one million infections recorded, Spain has the highest COVID-19 caseload in Western Europe. More than

34,000 people have died of the virus there, the vast

majority aged over 80.

Rallies rock Thailand• PM mulls lifting emergency decree

• Democracy activists have assembled daily in the capital since last week

• Protesters are also demanding monarchy to stay out of politics

AFP News

Thailand’s embattled premier announced yesterday he might lift

an emergency decree that has failed to stifle a growing protest movement demanding he steps down and also reforms to the monarchy.

After a day of anti-govern-ment and rival royalist protests across the country, thousands of angry democracy activ-ists marched on Government House, defying an emergency decree imposed last week ban-ning gatherings of more than four people.

As they chanted for him to resign, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha addressed the na-tion, saying he would make “the first move to de-escalate” the situation.

“I am currently preparing to lift the state of severe emer-gency in Bangkok and will do

so promptly if there are no vio-lent incidents,” he said, without specifying any timeframe.

“We must now step back from the edge of the slippery slope that can easily slide to chaos,” he added, calling on protest-ers to resolve their differences through parliament.

Democracy activists had massed at Bangkok’s Victory Monument, while counter-ral-lies attracted thousands of roy-alists in the southern province of Narathiwat and scores more in the capital.

Democracy activists have assembled daily in the capital since last week, flouting the emergency edict as their calls for Prayut to go intensified.

The former army chief masterminded the 2014 coup and protesters say the mili-

tary-drafted constitution rigged last year’s vote in his favour.

Protesters are also de-manding the powerful and ul-tra-wealthy monarchy stay out of politics -- a previously taboo subject.

On Friday the use of force es-calated as riot police deployed water cannon against the un-armed activists and scores of demonstrators have been ar-rested.

NASA spacecraft to grab an asteroid sample

Reuters | Washington

NASA’s minivan-sized OSI-RIS-REx spacecraft will

begin a four-hour descent toward the rugged sur-face of the Bennu asteroid, whose acorn-shaped body, formed in the early days of our solar system, could hold clues to the origins of life on Earth, scientists say.

At 6:12 p.m. EDT (22:12 GMT), the spacecraft will be close enough to perform a meticulous five-second ‘touch-and-go’ technique by autonomously extending its 11-foot (3.35 m) robotic arm toward a flat patch of gravel roughly the size of a bas-ketball court near Bennu’s north pole.

“A lot of things could go wrong because the space-craft’s about the size of a van, and the asteroid has a lot of boulders in it,” Lucy Lim, a planetary scientist at NASA, said. “So we have to go between the boulders to get our sample, and a lot of planning went into that.”

to strengthen US alliances with “like-minded democracies” in part through arms sales in an ef-fort to curb the global influence of Russia and China.

Esper said the Pentagon would systematically monitor and manage its relationships with partner countries, aiming to find ways to coordinate mil-itaries and also to advance US arms sales.

The initiative, called the Guidance for Development for Alliances and Partnerships (GDAP), comes just two weeks before the presidential election that, if President Donald Trump loses, could see Esper replaced in January.

It also came after nearly four years of Trump’s efforts to re-structure and even dismantle alliances, including threatening NATO.

“America’s network of allies and partners provides us an asymmetric advantage our ad-

versaries cannot match,” Esper said Tuesday, calling the net-work “the backbone of the in-ternational rules-based order.”

“China and Russia probably have fewer than 10 allies com-

bined,” he added. He said China uses coercion

and financial entrapment to build its alliances with weak countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

“The smaller the nation and the greater its needs, the heav-ier the pressure from Beijing,” he said.

He cited visits he has made to build defense relations with Malta, Mongolia and Palau, as well as US plans for a greater defense presence in Eastern Eu-rope, including basing troops in Poland.

And he underscored the need to build closer ties to “like-minded democracies such as India and Indonesia” adding

“they all recognize what China is doing.” A key part of this effort is to expand US arms sales, to both help allies improve defense capabilities and to bolster the US defense industry against compe-tition from Moscow and Beijing, Esper said.

Esper said he has taken steps to ease restrictions on exports of “critical” weapons systems and speed up approvals, and will use the GDAP to identify arms sales opportunities and protect US markets. He cited as an example the recent re-laxation of US restrictions on the export of battlefield drones, which the United States could sell to Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.

Jailed Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin So-

toudeh has been moved to a women’s detention centre outside the capital Tehran instead of receiving the hos-pital treatment she needs, her husband said yesterday.

The UN has called on Iran to free Sotoudeh, a winner of the European Parlia-ment’s Sakharov prize, and other political prisoners ex-cluded from a push to emp-ty jails amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Taliban ambush kills at least 25 Afghan security personnel• The Taliban did not directly take responsibilityAFP | Kunduz, Afghanistan

At least 25 Afghan se-curity force personnel were killed in an ambush

blamed on the Taliban, officials said yesterday, as spiralling vi-olence imperils ongoing peace talks.

The ambush came despite Taliban assurances to Wash-ington last week that they would reduce bloodshed.

Security forces were attacked overnight Tuesday in Takhar province and fighting was ongo-ing, said Jawad Hejri, a spokes-man for the governor, who put the death toll so far at 25.

“The Taliban had taken posi-tions in the houses around the area. They ambushed our forces who were there for an operation against the enemy,” he said.

Takhar provincial health di-rector Abdul Qayoum said 34 se-curity personnel had been killed -- including the deputy police chief of the province.

The Taliban did not direct-ly take responsibility, but said their fighters had “engaged the enemy” in Takhar to retaliate against security operations car-ried out against them.

Despite joining peace talks

with the Afghan government in Qatar last month, the Taliban have only increased violence in Afghanistan in a bid to wield leverage in the negotiations.

UNHCR appeals for aid

A major assault by the mil-itants in Helmand province forced thousands of families to flee their homes this month, while a car bomb Sunday near the police headquarters in Ghor blamed on the insurgents left 16 people dead and 154 wounded.

The UN refugee agency UN-HCR said nearly 40,000 people had fled in Helmand, and called for aid to help the displaced.

“Disruptions in telecommuni-cations, the threat of improvised explosive devices and the con-tinued closure of the highway between Kandahar and Hel-mand following the destruction of several bridges are adding to the challenges,” said Caroline

Van Buren, the UNHCR’s repre-sentative to Afghanistan.

Little progress has been made in meetings between Afghan government negotiators and the Taliban in Doha since the talks started in September.

“This level of violence, of course, makes the task of ne-gotiating very difficult,” said Nader Naderi, a negotiator for the Afghan government.

“Situations like this add to the sense of urgency for a ceasefire.”

The top US envoy to Afghan-istan, Zalmay Khalilzad, said earlier this week that fighting is threatening the peace process.

“Violence today remains dis-tressingly high in spite of the recent reaffirmation of the need for substantial reduction,” he added.

News in brief u Bulgarian President Rumen Radev’s has tested negative a second time for the coronavirus and expects his compulsory self-isolation to be lifted, his office said yesterday. The 57-year-old former military pilot halted a visit to Estonia to return home on Tuesday after contact last week with a military officer who later tested positive.

u France will ban an Islamist group named after the late Sheikh Yassin as part of a crackdown on militants following the murder of a French schoolteacher last week, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said yesterday. Samuel Paty

was beheaded on Oct. 16 by an 18-year-old of Chechen origin seeking to avenge his victim’s use of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in a class on

freedom of expression. Police shot the attacker dead.

u At least 15 women were killed Wednesday in a stampede at an Afghan football stadium where thousands of people had gathered to apply for Pakistani visas, authorities said. The incident unfolded at the stadium in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, after large crowds assembled in a bid to secure travel permission after the nearby Pakistani consulate resumed services following a seven-month hiatus due to the pandemic. To avoid overwhelming the visa centre, applicants had been directed to Jalalabad’s nearby football stadium to hand over passports and paperwork, provincial governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told reporters.

u Bumblebees exposed to levels of radiation found within the Chernobyl exclusion zone suffered a “significant” drop in reproduction, in new research published Wednesday that scientists say should prompt a rethink of international calculations of nuclear environmental risk. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal

Society B, set out to discover how ionising radiation affects insects, which are often thought to be more resilient than

other species. Researchers in Scotland and Germany exposed bee colonies in a laboratory setting to a range of radiation levels found in areas of the exclusion zone around the ruined Chernobyl site, where a reactor exploded in 1986 in the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt says ‘victorious’ in cancer fight

AFP | Mumbai

Sanjay Dutt, one of Bol-lywood’s top stars, said

Wednesday he had emerged “victorious” after being di-agnosed with cancer earlier this year.

“Today, on the occasion of my kids’ birthday, I am happy to come out victori-ous from this battle and be able to give them the best gift I can -- the health and well-being of our family”, Dutt said on Instagram.

“My heart is filled with gratitude as I share this news with all of you today,” the 61-year-old star said, one week after confirming the diagnosis. He gave no oth-er details of his treatment however.

In August, Dutt said he was “taking a short break for some medical treatment”, triggering weeks of media speculation.

The actor, nicknamed “Deadly Dutt”, is one of Bol-lywood’s most bankable and most controversial names.

Dutt shot to fame in a string of 1980s action mov-ies in which he performed his own stunts.

But the star also struggled with substance abuse, in-cluding heroin and cocaine, said to have been sparked by the pain of losing his mother, Indian screen icon Nargis Dutt, to cancer.

He returned to make more hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s including “Jeete Hain Shaan Se” (“We Live with Style”), “Saajan” (“Be-loved”) and “Khal Nayak” (“Villain”).

His life took a dramatic turn when he was arrest-ed following the Mumbai bombings in March 1993 that killed 257 people. Dutt was convicted in 2006 of possessing guns supplied by mafia bosses who carried out the blasts.

Emma Roberts blocked her mom on Instagram after pregnancy leakBang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Emma Roberts blocked her mother on In-stagram after she accidentally confirmed

her pregnancy. The 29-year-old actress is currently ex-

pecting her first child with her boyfriend Garrett Hedlund, but didn’t get to reveal the good news herself, as her mother, Kelly Cun-ningham, was the one who told her fans through her Instagram account.

Emma recalled: “I was keeping my preg-nancy pretty low key but unfortunately my mother has In-stagram. Which, m o t h e r s a n d Instagram, it’s a bad combina-tion. She defi-nitely spilled the beans.

“ [ B u y i n g h e r a n i P -hone was] the worst thing I ever did. It started slow with a Goog-le Alert on me, which she never had before, so she’s like, ‘Emma have

you seen this photo from 2010?!’ I’m like, ‘Yes, I’ve seen that photo.’ So I’m getting flood-ed with ‘Is this true?’ And ‘Have you seen this and that?’ And then she got Instagram.”

The ‘American Hor-ror Story’ actress first had the news broken

by a news outlet, and said Kelly

thought the a r t i c l e w a s her daughter

confirming the news, so assumed

it was safe to post about it on social me-

dia.She added: “It led to in-

teracting with my fans and just thanking them for all their preg-nancy wishes. It was a disaster, and I found it all out on a plane, so I couldn’t get to her. I couldn’t call her or attack her.

“She was like, ‘Thank you so much for the well-wishes! We’re so excited.’ It was endless. My friends were sending me screen grabs. It was unbelievable. When I said to her, ‘Mom, you revealed my pregnancy.’ She goes, ‘Emma, you announced it!’ And I said, ‘No I didn’t. That was a tabloid.’ She goes, ‘Oh I didn’t ... that wasn’t clear.’ ”

And to teach her mum a lesson, Emma even blocked her on the photo sharing app.

Miley Cyrus: I got

chased down by UFOIANS | Los Angeles

Pop star Miley Cyrus claims

she has had an encounter with al-iens. However, the 27-year-old singer admits she was high at the time, so c a n n o t b e certain of w h a t s h e

saw.“I had an experience, actu-

ally. I was driving through San Bernardino with my

friend, and I got chased down by some sort of UFO. I’m pretty sure about what I saw, but I’d also bought weed wax from a guy in a

van in front of a taco shop, so it could have been the weed wax. But the best way to de -scribe it is a flying snow-plow. It had

this big plow in the front of it and was glowing yellow. I did see it flying, and my friend saw it, too. There were a

couple of other cars on the road and they also stopped to look, so I think what I saw was real,” Mi-ley said.

The singer made her claim to Interview magazine when she was asked if she has ever looked into the likelihood of alien life, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I was shaken for, like, five days,” she said, adding: “I couldn’t really look at the sky the same. I thought they might come back.”

However, the sing-er insisted that she “didn’t feel threat-ened” by the unidentified flying ob-ject.

Vin Diesel on how lockdown helped him explore his musical sideIANS | Los Angeles

Hollywood star Vin Diesel says the lockdown and the result-

ant closure of the film industry helped him get out of his comfort zone and make music.

The star share the update on In-stagram along with a picture of him in the music studio.

“You all know how deep I go into the films I make.. this year there was no film production. An artist must have a creative outlet... you who made my face book first to 100 million, you who have always encour-aged me to step out of my comfort z o n e s av e d me, because I was able to make m u s i c this year!!! Will always love you. 10 days until the next single!” Diesel posted on Instagram.

After decades of success in H o l l y w o o d , Diesel made his foray into the

world of pop music in September with the release of his debut sin-gle, “Feel like I do”.

For the first track, Diesel part-nered with DJ Kygo on the pop EDM track, which was written and produced by Petey Martin. In his debut single, the actor croons to

narrate a story of falling in love at first sight.

He debuted the song on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, sharing a video of him in the recording studio.

“Kelly, I am so honoured to be able to debut

my music on your show because y o u , s i n c e you first won ( A m e r i c a n ) Idol until to-

day, have some-how maintained

your authentic-ity. I am blessed

that on a year that I would normally be on a movie set, as you know that’s not possi-ble, I’ve had another creative outlet, anoth-er way to show you or share with you my heart,” he said at the time of the release.

AFP | Berlin

To t t e n h a m Ho t s p u r manager Jose Mourin-

ho has insisted there was nothing “Spursy” about the club’s extraordinary draw with West Ham.

Spurs squandered a 3-0 lead in the final 10 with the Hammers on Sunday.

That led some observers to say it had been a “Spursy’ display, a tag used to de-scribe Tottenham’s habit of contriving to make a mess of a promising position late on.

“I believe that winning 3-0 in minute 80, we can play 50 more matches and it’s not going to happen again, so I don’t want to be sticking on this,” said Mour-inho yesterday.

“No stories about ‘Spursy’ and this kind of thing. We just need to defend better from set pieces.”

Rashford sinks PSG again as Koeman’s Barca send message

Marcus Rashford pounces late for Manchester United to sink PSG again

• Sweet 16 for Messi as Barcelona thump Ferencvaros

• Morata double gets Pirlo’s Juventus off the mark in Kiev

AFP | Paris

Marcus Rashford once a g a i n s a n k Pa r i s Saint-Germain after

netting the decisive goal in a 2-1 Champions League win in the French capital on Tuesday, while Barcelona sent a message with a thumping 5-1 victory over Ferencvaros.

Rashford, who scored the winning spot-kick when United knocked PSG out in 2019, drilled home a low shot three min-utes from the end which won a thrilling Group H contest at a near-empty Parc des Princes.

United had taken the lead in the 23rd minute when Bruno Fernandes slotted home from the spot at the second attempt, but Anthony Martial inexplica-bly headed Neymar’s corner into his own net 10 minutes after the break.

The rest of the match was an end-to-end affair with both sides opting to go for the win rather than hold on for the draw, and Rashford took the points af-ter twice being denied by Keylor Navas earlier in the match.

“Of course it’s a nice feeling. More importantly we win the game and we’re in a strong posi-tion now in the group,” Rashford told BT Sport.

“It’s the first game, the con-

centration and intensity we showed today we have to take forward in the next games in the Premier League.”

The win sets United up nicely for next week’s home clash with RB Leipzig, who are top of the group after beating Istanbul Ba-saksehir 2-0 in Germany.

Koeman’s winning startRonald Koeman got his first

Champions League campaign as Barcelona coach off to a winning start with a confident win over Ferencvaros that gives them control of Group G, top but level on three points with Juventus.

Ferencvaros, the first Hun-garian team to make the group stage in 11 years, started brightly and even had the ball in the net via Tokmac Nguen only for the powerful 12th-minute strike to be ruled out for offside.

Messi won and converted the

penalty to give the Catalans a 27th-minute lead and the match was as good as done when Ansu Fati clipped home Frenkie de Jong’s sumptuous pass just be-fore the break.

Philippe Coutinho lashed home the third before Ihor Kharatin pulled one back from the penalty spot after Gerard Pique was sent off for pulling back Nguen as he charged to-wards goal.

Pique’s red card means he will miss next week’s game away at Juventus, a greater test of Bar-ca’s capabilities.

Pedri and Ousmane Dembele finished the scoring for the 10-man hosts as they prepare for the weekend’s Clasico with Real Madrid.

“We go into it with the maxi-mum motivation possible,” said Fati. “It’s a Clasico, a game I have always dreamed of playing

in.”Barca announced contract

extensions for Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clement Lenglet almost straight after the win.

Juventus looked comfortable in their 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev in what was the Andrea Pirlo’s first ever Champions League match in the dugout, with Alvaro

Morata scoring twice to take the points for the Italians.

Immobile downs DortmundIt was a good night for Italy as

Ciro Immobile got revenge on his old club Borussia Dortmund by scoring in Lazio’s 3-1 win over the Bundesliga club in Rome, their first Champions League match in 13 years.

Immobile managed just three goals in 24 Bundesliga games for Dortmund in 2014/15, but last season’s European Golden Shoe winner outshone Dort-mund’s star forward Erling Braut Haaland by netting the opening goal for the hosts after just six minutes.

It’s the first game, the concentration and intensity we showed

today we have to take forward in the next

games in the Premier League

Ozil ‘deeply disappointed’ by Arsenal omissionAFP | London

Mesut Ozil said yesterday he was deeply disap-

pointed” to be axed from Ar-senal’s Premier League squad amid speculation he has played his last game for the London club.

The 32-year-old is the highest-paid player in Arsenal’s history on a reported £350,000 ( $ 4 5 0 , 0 0 0 ) a week, but has also been omitted from the Gun-ners’ Europa League squad.

Ozil has not played a sin-g l e m i n u t e f o r M i k e l Arteta’s side since March 7.

“This is a difficult mes-s a g e t o w r i t e to the Arsenal fans that I’ve played for over the past few years,” said Ozil in a statement posted on social media.

“I’m really deeply

disappointed by the fact that I have not been registered for the Premier League season for the time being.”

Former Germany inter-national Ozil went on to question Arsenal’s loyal-ty having signed his cur-

rent deal, which ex-pires next year,

i n Ja n u a r y 2018 -- the

same time A l e x i s Sanchez left the Gunners

for Man-c h e s t e r

United.“Upon sign-

i n g m y n e w contract in 2018, I

pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the

club that I love, Arse-nal, and it saddens me

that this has not been re-ciprocated,” said Ozil.“As I have just found out,

loyalty is hard to come by nowadays. I’ve always tried to remain positive from week to week that there’s maybe a chance to get back in the squad soon again. That’s why I kept

silent so far.”Alongside Greece defend-

er Sokratis Papastathopoulos -- also left out of both squads -- Ozil will only be able to rep-resent Arsenal Under-23s until 2021 at the earliest.

This month saw Ozil offer to pay the salary of Arsenal’s pop-ular mascot Gunnersaurus after Jerry Quy, who has played the role of the dinosaur since 1993, was let go by the club with sta-diums empty during the coro-navirus crisis.

Ozil, who has not played a single min-ute for Arsenal since March 7, offered to

pay the salary of Ar-senal’s popular mas-

cot Gunnersaurus earlier this month

Siraj, Gurkeerat guide RCB to comprehensive win over KKR

ANI | Dubai

Mo h a m m a d S i r a j ’ s three-wicket haul and

Gurkeerat Singh Mann’s un-beaten 21-run knock helped Royal Challengers Banga-lore (RCB) gain an emphat-ic eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) yesterday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

With this win, RCB has gone to the second position in the points table with 14 points from 10 matches while KKR is at the fourth spot with 10 points.

Chasing 85, RCB openers Devdutt Padikkal and Aaron Finch provided a solid start to the side as they put on 46 runs for the first wicket. KKR finally got the breakthrough in the seventh over as Lockie

Ferguson dismissed Finch (16). In the same over, there was a mixup between Padikkal (25) and Gurkeerat Singh Mann and, as a result, the former had to lose his wicket, reducing RCB to 46/2.

In the end, RCB skipper Vi-rat Kohli (18*) and Gurkeerat Singh Mann (21*) ensured that the side did not suffer from any more hiccups. RCB sailed to a comfortable eight-wicket win with 39 balls to spare.

Earlier, spectacular bowling performance by Mohammed Siraj and Yuzvendra Chahal restricted Kolkata Knight Riders at 84/8 in the allotted twenty overs.

After electing to bat first, KKR had the worst start possi-ble as the side lost three wick-ets with just three runs on the board.

Stroll says Eifel withdrawal was due to Covid-19 but he’s ready to race

AFP | Paris

Lance Stroll confirmed yes-terday that he missed the

Eifel Grand Prix earlier this month with Covid-19 but said he would be fit to race in Por-tugal on Sunday.

The Canadian, who drives for Racing Point, posted a long tweet explaining what happened when he sudden-ly pulled out on the Saturday morning before the race in Germany.

“I arrived at the Nurbur-gring after testing negative in the normal pre-race tests,” he wrote. “But on Saturday morn-ing I started to feel unwell and woke up with an upset stom-ach.”

He said he self-isolated in his motorhome, avoided the paddock, flew home on Sun-day morning and took a test that evening which came back

positive the next day.Meanwhile, Nico Hulken-

berg, called while sitting in a cafe in Cologne on Saturday morning, took over the car, was slowest in qualifying but climbed through the field in the race to finish eighth.

It was the second time the German had acted as a late coronavirus replacement at Racing Point. He drove the two Silverstone races in early August after Mexican driver Sergio Perez tested positive for Covid-19 test.

the highest stages in amateur MMA and will look to have the same success as he begins his professional career. Khan is set to take on Yann Liasse at BRAVE CF 44 in his first pro bout after a stellar amateur career.

Khan started out with boxing training, and still counts some of the best boxers in the world as some of his idols, such as Amir Khan, Floyd Mayweather, Guill-ermo Rigondeaux, and Man-ny Pacquiao. Before moving to Bahrain to transition to mixed martial arts in 2014, he made the National Team in his native Pakistan.

Under KHK MMA and training with Bahraini superstar Hamza Kooheji, Abbas Khan has devel-oped into one of the best ama-teurs in the world and has been

able to achieve several feats, such as the 2018 African Ama-teur Championship gold medal, as well as the 2017 & 2019 Asian Amateur Championship bronze medals.

Now, he prepares to be the latest product of KHK MMA to make waves at BRAVE CF. He will face a tough and undefeated opponent upon arrival to the professional scene. Yann Liasse

BRAVE CF’s role in African MMA development: a long-term commitment TDT | Manama

BRAVE Combat Federation, the Bahrain-based promo-

tion founded by His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, was the very first global Mixed Martial Arts organiza-tion to host an event in Africa. After its first event in Morocco, the promotion returned to the continent twice, with two trips to South Africa.

The commitment of the fast-est-growing MMA promotion in the world with the African continent is unparalleled in the industry, as the Bahrain-based organization remains till this date as the only international promotion to host fight nights

within the continent. In addition, BRAVE CF has also

consistently added African tal-

ents to its athlete roster, with fighters from the continent fea-tured in several international

cards, and not only in the ones in the region.

Such signings were enabled by a thorough scouting program led by BRAVE CF’s African office, that monitors and keeps track of the talent. For 2021, BRAVE Combat Federation has even bigger plans for Africa. Officials revealed a second phase of the scouting program, intensifying and expanding the radius of the talent search, empowering ath-letes from the whole continent.

The upcoming year will also see the first installment of a BRAVE Combat Federation re-ality show held in the continent of Africa. The details about the project are set to be announced in the first months of 2021.

Djokovic pulls out of Paris Masters, eyes Vienna and LondonAFP | Paris

Novak Djokovic said yester-day that he will not defend

his Paris Masters title because he cannot gain any ranking points if he plays.

The world number one told Serbian daily Sportski Zurnal that due to the revised rank-ing system created amid the coronavirus pandemic he could not win any additional ranking points at next month’s ATP event in the French capital.

Djokovic said his main pri-ority is to remain first in the rankings until at least March 8 next year to break Roger Feder-

er’s record for most weeks in the ATP’s top spot.

Rankings are calculated by the players’ best results between March 2019 and December this year.

Djokovic, collected 1,000 points by wining in Paris last year and so cannot add to his total by playing there.

“I won’t play the Masters in Paris as I can’t win new points there. But I will go to Vienna

and London”, Djokovic said.“I didn’t play in Vienna last

year and I can win up to 500 points there. There are lot of points to be won in London as well.”

Djokovic, 33, who lost the French Open final to Rafael Na-dal earlier this month is training in Belgrade.

He said he has to keep an eye on Nadal and Dominic Thiem, the two men closest to him in the rankings.

“It depends also on Nadal and Thiem’s score until the end of this year, and also on following Australian Open, but I am in a good position,” Djokovic said.
