Setting Your Facebook Security Settings

This training piece will provide the following guidelines:

Setting your account for secure browsing

Setting Privacy Settings

Setting up your Notifications

Setting Your Account for Secure Browsing

This setting allows for a secure browsing experience when using Facebook. By not clicking this, a user is

susceptible to being “hacked” if they are on a unsecured or poorly secured wireless network.

*Note: Some Facebook applications will turn this off temporarily when using that particular application

(Examples: Farmville, Oregon Trail, etc…).

To get to these settings click on account (upper right hand corner of main page), and then click on the drop down of Account Settings. On the first tab, near the bottom will be account security, click change (see below). Once you click change, a pop up will appear. To secure browsing, check box the first category. You can also choose to receive an e-mail if you are logged into Facebook using another computer.

Setting Privacy Settings

Connecting On Facebook Settings The settings in this section control basic information that people will use to find you on Facebook.

To get to these settings click on account, and the drop down of Privacy Settings in the upper right hand corner of the Facebook main page. Then in the first section “Connecting On Facebook” click View Settings (see below).

Once you have clicked on view settings, a new webpage will appear with a vareity of sections to set security on. Facebook gives each of these sections a short description as to what each category is for (see next page). The PLSD recommends that users have the following settings:

Search for you on Facebook…………………………Everyone

Send you friend requests……………………………. Everyone

Send you messages…………………………………. Everyone

See your friend list…………………………………… Friends Only

See your education and work ………………………. Friends Only

See your current city and hometown……………….. Everyone

See your likes, activities and other connections……Friends Only

As a rule of thumb, always check the “preview my profile” setting (top right hand corner of this page) to ensure

that your settings are set how you would like them to be. Using this tool, you can see how friends and non-

friends see your profile. Once you have completed these settings, click back to privacy.

**NOTE: These settings will allow non-friends to see only your photo, your gender, your current city and your hometown.

Sharing On Facebook Settings

This section controls who can see what information is on your profile. To get to these settings click on account,

and the drop down of Privacy Settings in the upper right hand corner of the Facebook main page. Then it is

the second section “Sharing On Facebook.”

For this setting individuals can either select one of the given choices: everyone, friends of friends, friends only or you can customize your settings. PLSD recommends setting everything to friends only. To choose friends only click on the friends only text on the left hand side and then click apply these in the bottom right hand corner.

To customize settings, click custom from the list on the left hand side of the page. In the center of the page, at

the bottom, click customize settings. Once there you can pick who you want to be able to see what. There are

a couple of key areas to look at and their recommended settings.

They are:

Places I check into – Friends Only

Include me in “People Here Now” after I check in - Don’t Enable

Edit Album privacy for exhisting photos – Friends Only

Photos and Videos I’m tagged in – Friends Only

Friends can check me into places – Disabled

Facebook Security Settings 5 *Note: some of these categories you will have to click edit settings first and then pick the setting. (see photo next page)

As a rule of thumb, always check the “preview my profile” setting (at the top of the page) to ensure that your

settings are set how you would like them to be. Using this tool, you can see how friends and non-friends see

your profile. Once you have completed these settings, click back to privacy.

Facebook Apps and Websites Settings

In this section, you control settings for Facebook apps, games and websites. In the Privacy Settings section,

under apps and websites, click on edit your settings. To get to these settings click on account, and the drop

down of Privacy Settings in the upper right hand corner of the Facebook main page. Then it is at the bottom of

the page, left hand side “Apps and Websites.”

Facebook Security Settings 6

Once in the Apps and Website section, click on the edit settings button for each category to view what

information is gathered by each app and determine your settings.

At the bottom of the Apps, Games and Websites settings page there are two categories to be aware of. They

are Instant Personalization and Public Search (see above picture).

Page 7: Facebook Security Settings Handout - paplv.org Workshop Handouts and...Facebook Security Settings Handout Contact: Kala Morrissey ... Once you have completed these settings, click

Facebook Security Settings 7 Instant Personalization allows Facebook partner websites to gather information on you and tailor your

experieince. They only gather information that is avaliable to everyone. PLSD recommends that you do not

enable this. To ensure it is disabled, click on edit settings and make sure the check box is unchecked.

Public search shows a preview of a Facebook profile when people search for an indidivual on a search engine

(like google). PLSD recommends that you do not enable this. To ensure it is disabled, click on edit settings

and make sure the check box is unchecked.

Setting Your Notification Settings

The settings here control when you receive notifications from Facebook in regards to your account, applications and games. To get to these settings click on account, and the drop down of Account Settings in the upper right hand corner of Facebook,. Then click the third tab “Notifications.”

Once there, checkbox any area that you want to receive an e-mail notification for when using Facebook. For

some items, you can also receive a SMS text message. PLSD recommends that you checkbox all areas.

If you choose not to check mark all areas, it is important to at least check mark the “Tags you in a photo” under

the Photo section and “Tags you in a video” under the Videos section. This will ensure that anytime someone

tags you in a photo, that you are notified and are aware that it is out there.

Facebook Lingo

Applications- Applications on Facebook are designed to enhance the users experience on the site with

engaging games and useful features like Events and Photos. Some applications are built by Facebook

developers, but most applications are built by outside developers. Applications on Facebook allow you

to play social games with your friends, remember friends' birthdays, share your taste in movies, send

gifts to friends, and much more.

Facebook Chat – Facebook chat allows you to have a real-time conversation with someone while on

Facebook. The chat is typically between two individuals, however from a Facebook Group, it can include

more. Chats do not post to your wall or news feed.

Facebook Friend – A Facebook Friend is someone on Facebook that an individual has decided to be

connected with online. Facebook friends can see each other’s photos, status updates, and comment on

their wall and photos. Users can set exactly what friends see in their security settings. *PLSD

recommends only Facebook friending individuals that you know already.

Facebook Group - A Facebook Group allows users of a common interest to come together in one place.

Groups can range from a school club to a class reunion. Groups can have permissions on them.

Individuals can ask to be part of the group or be invited but the administrator of the group has to approve

all requests.

Facebook Fan Page- Facebook Pages are for organizations, businesses, celebrities, and bands to

broadcast great information in an official, public manner to people who choose to connect with them.

Similar to profiles, Fan Pages can be enhanced with applications that help the entity communicate and

engage with their audiences. When you “like” a Fan Page, their updates will post to the News Feed.

Fan Pages have no security and they are open to the public. However, by liking a Fan Page, it does not

entitle that organization to the information on your profile.

Like - "Like" is a way to give positive feedback or to connect with things you care about on Facebook.

You can like content that your friends post to give them feedback or like a Page that you want to connect

with on Facebook. When you click "Like" on a Page, in an advertisement, or on content on Facebook,

you are making a connection. The connection will be displayed in your profile and on your Wall and your

friends may receive a News Feed story about the connection. You may be displayed on the Page you

connected to, in advertisements about that Page, or in social plugins next to the content you like. The

Page may also post content into your News Feed or send you messages.

Most Recent - Most Recent is the part of an individual’s News Feed that shows all actions your friends

are making.

News Feed – This is the center column of your Facebook home page. The news feed constantly

updates from the people and pages that you follow on Facebook.

Places - Places is a Facebook feature that allows you to see where your friends are and share your

location in the real world. When you use Places, you'll check in on Facebook. When you check in you will

be able to see if any of your friends are currently checked in nearby and connect with them easily. You

can check into nearby Places to tell your friends where you are, tag your friends in the Places you visit,

and view comments your friends have made about the Places you visit. Many organizations also offer

incentives or coupons to individuals who check in.

Status - A status is a posting that updates your friends on what you're doing. A status will show up on

the wall and can appear in the news feed.

Tag - A tag labels friends in a photo or video and links to their profile pages. The five most recently

tagged photos will appear at the top of a profile. Only friends can be tagged. However, you can tag any

photo or video that you are able to view. If you tag a photo that was not uploaded by a friend, the owner

of the photo will need to approve the tag.

Top News - Top News is that part of an individual’s News Feed that Facebook aggregates as the most

interesting content that your friends are posting.

The Wall - The Wall is a place to post and share content with your friends. Content can include status

updates, uploaded photos, game rankings or information from other applications. Friends can also post

on your wall. Status updates, uploading photos, or friending someone will post on an individual’s wall

and show up in the news feed.
