Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) is pleased to present the 2016 Faces of Breast Cancer calendar. This unique calendar honors breast cancer survivors and helps increase awareness of the importance of screening for breast cancer.

SMH’s Breast Center delivers high-tech, patient-focused care across the continuum of a woman’s breast health needs, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up. Our multidisciplinary team approach includes nurse navigators who are always available to answer questions and help navigate patients through the sometimes confusing and complicated health care system. The Breast Center is also committed to providing the most advanced diagnostic services and now offers 3D mammography, which significantly improves the ability to detect breast cancer earlier – when the chances for a cure are highest.

Every woman should take the following steps to help detect breast cancer at its earliest, most curable stage:

• Monthly breast self-examination beginning at age 20

• Clinical breast examination at least once every three years beginning at age 20 and annually after age 40

• Annual mammograms beginning at age 40. Women under age 40 with a family history of breast cancer or other concerns about their personal risk should consult a medical professional about when to begin mammography screenings.

The Faces of Breast Cancer photos from this calendar are proudly displayed at SMH’s annual Light the Town Pink event, held each year on Oct. 1. The Village Shops in Prairie Village and the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center are adorned in pink lights for the month of October in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Originally from Minnesota, photographer Rachel Kabukala has been bringing her unique perspective and vision to Kansas City since 2013. Previously, she and her family lived in Mississippi for several years, where Rachel taught French and art at a Jackson high school, and served as the managing editor of Parents & Kids Magazine. Rachel now works as the Department Assistant for African Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum, and in her spare time enjoys exploring Kansas City with her husband and three children. As a photographer, Rachel is present in each moment, and considers it a true privilege to be trusted with the task of documenting the lives of her clients.

I am a breast cancer survivor.From the beginning of my breast cancer experience I felt the strength of those around me. The doctors, nurses and staff – every person I met connected with me.

I believe things happen for a reason. I’ve had some physical changes from my treatment but I have remained myself. My art ability has given me an outlet to make things happen. I keep smiling, go slow and think positive. I’m sitting on a different plan than I had a year ago but I have options and that’s important.

I am a breast cancer survivor.My family was the key to the way I handled my diagnosis and treatment. My mom, also a breast cancer survivor, was battling her own cancer at the time yet she was solid as a rock. My siblings, their spouses, my husband and especially my children kept me living in the present – never thinking “what if?”

My diagnosis has allowed me to live for today. I look at my life differently now. Am I making an impact? Am I doing something important? And don’t sweat the small stuff!

I am a breast cancer survivor.With every step of my journey I was surrounded by love and it helped me brave whatever obstacle, test or surgery I was facing. I received love from people through prayer, hugs and correspondence. I was surrounded with this huge blanket of love that helped me manage all the fear, doubt and everything else I felt during my breast cancer experience.

I feel like this diagnosis changed the compass of my life. I see things much differently. I feel like I’m more on point with what God wants for my life. It has enriched my life and given me more clarity and direction as to why I am here. It has turned me upside down in a good way.
