1. Draw a diagonal line on the back of one 3" P square. Lay the square on top of one 3" R square.

2. Sew 1/4" away from the line on both sides. Open out the two half-square triangles (HST) and press. Trim to 21/2" square. Repeat to make a total of six P/R HSTs.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make HST in the following colorways (figure 1):

Note the orientation and color placement when sewing together the units in each block.

Finishing10. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing, and

quilt as desired.

11. Stitch the 21/2" x WOF V binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front along the left and top sides matching raw edges and mitering the corner. Begin stitching about halfway up the left side, leaving a 6" tail for joining. When you get to the top right corner, stop stitching 2" from the corner. Backstitch. Trim binding 1/4" beyond the right edge of quilt.

12. Stitch the 21/2" x WOF U binding strips together end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Using a straight seam, sew the U binding strip to the end of the V binding strip at the top right edge of quilt where you trimmed leaving 1/4".

13. Finish stitching the V binding strip to the top edge of the quilt, creating the miter as normal. Stitch the U binding strip to the right edge of the quilt, mitering in the lower right corner as usual. Stitch the U binding strip to the bottom edge of the quilt, stopping 2" from the lower right corner. Trim binding 1/4" beyond the left edge of the quilt.

14. Join the binding ends as above and finish the application.

15. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the folded edge to the quilt back.
