At SAME, we try and make the holidays spe-

cial for our guests by giving out small bags with

assorted toiletries and maybe a pair of clean socks

or warm gloves. Through our clothing ministry,

we have been able to make those items available

to our guests as they are needed.

So this year we have asked our guests what they

would like to have and the majority came up

with bus passes. We are asking HBC to help out

with the purchases of 150 bus passes.

We need 150 bus passes -

and 10 HRTGoPass 1Day

(half fare for 65 & older ) ($2.00)

The Christmas “Bus Pass” Tree is in the HBC

office. Take a bus pocket off the tree, go to one

of the listed retailers near you and purchase a bus

pass or put $4 and/or $2 in cash or check in the

pocket. Then return the bus pocket with ticket or

monies in the pocket and hang back on the tree

by December 16th.

(So All May Eat) UPDATE

Yes, we are still here! Work has progressed on the rebuild at Hampton Baptist Church and we are hoping to be back in our building by mid-January 2016. THANK YOU for your hospitality as we continue to find ways to serve those in need. Our guests have also commented on the hospitality of 1st Presbyterian. One guest spoke about coming to church here because he “didn’t feel nervous” when he went to a service. We have transitioned from our summer bag lunch program where we served 60 – 80 each week to our hot meal program where we are feeding over 100 people each week. Along with the hot meal pro-gram, we have begun a clothing ministry where our guests can fill out a card stating their sizes and needs. We are striving to fill these requests so that each guest who asks will be able to get 3 pieces of clothing a month. Celebrating Birthdays

This year, I will celebrate my 52nd birthday on December 1st. And so I would like to invite you to celebrate with

me by sending me a Facebook "Happy Birthday", a greeting card, or an email message to wish me a happy birth-

day on or about December 1st. I will not be in the office that day as we are encouraged to take our birthday as a day off. For each greeting and well-wishing words, I commit to the Capital Campaign a dollar. And now Pat Gar-

vey has agreed to match my gift as he celebrates the birthday of one of his granddaughters, Beth Goddin, on that same day. As you continue to think about ways that new revenues can be directed toward our church's mission

and ministry, get creative. This year I've asked my family to make any birthday or

Christmas gifts to me, a donation to the capital campaign.

One of our Capital Campaign members, Jane Austin, is doing this also and gave me the idea. So, I look forward to many happy birthdays, both in years and

in greetings. And let me know of some of your creative ideas as you work toward this goal that we have taken on as a community of faith.

New Offering Envelopes:

As was previously communicated during the 2016 budget discussion, in an effort to develop a

more unified budget, contributions to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) have been moved out

of the “Goals” section of the budget to the Ministries and Missions section. As such, you will notice a

change on your 2016 offering envelopes. When filling out the envelope, the choices will now be HBC

(including CBF), Deep Roots Radical Rebuild (second Capital Campaign) or Memorial Gift in

memory of. When selecting HBC (including CBF), your offering will go towards the general budget

of the church, including CBF. This change was made by the Financial Planning Committee as a way

to better communicate our church’s ministry priorities.

As a reminder, the church offers the option

of giving by direct deposit. Forms are available in

the church office if you are interested.

Sunday, April 17, 2016 – Philip Gulley will lead worship at HBC

Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor and writer and speaker from Danville, Indiana. An eclectic

writer, Gulley has published 20 books, including the acclaimed Harmony series chronicling

life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana and the best-selling Porch

Talk series of inspirational and humorous essays. Gulley’s memoir, I Love You, Miss Hud-

dleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood, recounts his coming-

of-age years in Danville, Indiana. In addition, Gulley and co-author James Mulholland de-

scribe their progressive worldview in their books If Grace Is True and If God Is Love, fol-

lowed by Gulley’s books If the Church Were Christian and The Evolution of Faith.

In his most recently published work of non-fiction, Living the Quaker Way: Timeless Wis-

dom For a Better Life Today, Gulley offers the opportunity to participate in a world where

the values of the Quaker way bring equity, peace, healing, and hope. Living the Quaker

Way invites readers to encounter the defining commitments of the Religious Society of

Friends–simplicity, peace, integrity, community and equality, and shows how those ideals

can be incorporated in personal and public life to bring renewal and eliminate the clutter

that is keeping us from deeper spirituality. A Place Called Hope, Gulley’s most recent re-

lease, continues the fictional exploits of Sam Gardner, first introduced in Gulley’s Harmony

series.

Gulley is currently a co-pastor at Fairfield Friends Meeting near Indianapolis. Additionally,

he hosted the television program Porch Talk with Phil Gulley on the Indiana PBS affili-

ate WFYI and their flagship show Across Indiana, for which he received two Em-

my® Awards. He also writes the popular monthly Home Again column for Indianapolis

Monthly and is a regular contributor to The Saturday Evening Post. In 2010, Christian The-

ological Seminary awarded Gulley an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. In 2014,

Gulley was presented with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Franklin College, in

recognition of his body of work.

Please join us at 8:00 p.m. this Christmas Eve to worship and celebrate the arrival of the Christ Child. As always, it will be a quiet and beautiful candlelight service filled with the sweet sounds of the harp and a chance to remember and contemplate on the beginning of our Sav-ior’s life. Join us a few minutes early at 7:30 p.m. for a short reception in the Jones Fellowship Hall to share in some Christmas cheer and exchange Christmas greetings in our church family. Deacon Note

2015 has been a momentous year for Hampton Baptist Church, and 2016 will continue to bring new challenges as

well as many opportunities to celebrate and rejoice. And as is always the case, it will bring change in the leadership

of your deacon board. We are all honored that Kathy Kruschwitz has been elected to serve as our deacon

chair. She’s an active and vibrant participant in our congregation who serves and will continue to serve on our Ex-

ternal Missions Committee and the Personnel Committee. She also shares with the church her musical gifts as a

member of the Sanctuary choir. We’ve also been blessed to hear her speak from the pulpit about her passion for the

children of this community. We are also honored that Jim Puckett II will assist Kathy as the Vice Chair and that Dee

Dee Horne will serve as secretary.

Much has happened in 2015, and your deacons have worked hard to move the church forward as we continue to de-

fine who we are as a body of Christ in Hampton, Virginia. The year began with the election of two new trustees. As

a church, we’ve also found a way forward to complete our planned building program and can now look forward to

fellowshipping together in the new facility in February 2016. With hard work from one of our committees, the dea-

cons reviewed and approved a child protection policy to proactively and better safeguard our children and youth as

they worship with us as well as covenants for attendance agreements. Together with the financial planning commit-

tee, our 2016 budget process has become more intentional and inclusive, and hopefully in the process, our 2016

budget is even more transparent for each of us. As a church, we’ve initiated a second capital campaign, and while

we still have a ways to go, you have all once again demonstrated your commitment to improve the capability of this

church to minister to others. The personnel policy manual has been updated and the deacons have affirmed the first

update to the manual since 2008.

More importantly, our church has done a great deal to minister to those in need in our community. Our soup kitchen

(So All May Eat) now provides even more help to those in need - increasing our capability to offer clothes and toilet-

ries to the less fortunate. Once again, we’ve supported Night’s Welcome - housing and feeding the homeless in our

area. The WMU and others on our church family have provided support to a Veterans Standdown in Hampton -

helping to serve the homeless veterans among us with a much needed meal & services. Our prayer team has worked

and continues to work quietly, and in October they hosted a thoughtful prayer retreat. It was a wonderful opportuni-

ty to pause and reflect on our prayer life. The children and youth have also done much to serve our community and

to deepen relationships.

It’s been a challenging and a rewarding year for Hampton Baptist. For me, it’s a joy to worship and serve with you

in such a caring and giving community.

Description: The Child Care Worker at Hampton Baptist

Church cares for our youngest members

(infants-5 years olds) creating safe, nurtur-

ing, and engaging first experiences at

church. He/she has the ability to meet the

basic needs of young children such as play-

ing, feeding, and toileting. The Child Care

Worker reads stories, sings song, and enjoys

conversation with young children to pro-

mote the values of the Christian faith and

our congregation. He/she upholds the

health, safety, and security practices of the

HBC Nursery and interacts well with parents,

other employees, and volunteers.

Qualifications: At least 18 years old; prior experience work-ing with young children; references; willing-ness to submit to a background check.

Hours: Sundays 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays (September-mid-June) 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Other times throughout the year will be needed with ample notice given.

Rate of Pay: $9.50/hour

WMU DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

Thank you for giving to the Lord-------------------- We collected many toys for the Christmas Store in Hampton and as of 11/16,

their are 100 children on the list.

The WMU Christmas Corner in the HBC office is filling up fast with toys and gifts for the senior adults through PAA. I know the gifts will be much appreciated and loved by the seniors.

Claire Gaffney made a profession of faith in October and was

baptized on November 22. She is a second grader at Gloria Dei. She

is the daughter of David and Lisa Clemens-Gaffney and her grand-

parents are Chuck and Joyce Clemens. Claire is on the swim team

and plays the piano. She just started reading the Nancy Drew junior

series and is very interested in fashion. Claire also likes candy when

she can get it. Sunday School with Raynelle Ewing and Mildred

Barnes is the highlight of her week. She gains particular joy from

being with Nora Smith and Mr. Bob Sigler whom she would like to

one day emulate. Claire brings to our church pure joy and love of

Jesus. Let us open our hearts to all she will teach us as together we

live out our faith.

Devin Smith made a profession of faith last year and was

baptized. He is now a fourth grader at Princess Anne Elementary

School in Virginia Beach. He is the son of Kacie & Matt Steinmetz

and Sean Smith. His siblings include Nora, Trevor, and Isa-

belle. Roy and Jane Austin get the pleasure of being his grandpar-

ents as well as Amelia and George Steinmetz. Devin’s favorite pas-

time and school subject is writing. He likes to play outside as well

as spend time on his iPad. He has two dogs, Molly and Gabby. He

just finished a season of soccer and is considering taking up kara-

te. Devin especially enjoys his Sunday School class with Brenda

Cole, Nancy Trimble, and the other third – fifth graders. Devin is

wise beyond his years, perceptive, insightful, and articulate. We look

forward to years of growing in Christ together with him.

Hampton Baptist welcomed into membership

Devin Smith, Evie Gaffney & Claire Gaffney with open arms.

Evie Gaffney made a profession of faith and was baptized April 13,

2014. She is a native of the peninsula. Evie is the daughter of Lisa Clem-

ens and David Gaffney and sister to Claire. Her grandparents are Joyce

and Chuck Clemens. From the time she was three years old through fifth

grade she attended Gloria Dei Lutheran School. This year she is in the

sixth grade at Spratley Middle School. She has attended Hampton Baptist

Church since she was an infant. She was dedicated here when she was

very young.

She states that she joined the church and was baptized here because

she loves God and thinks being part of a church family is very important.

Before being baptized she says she was a worrier, but afterward she real-

ized that God was always with her to help her. Now she doesn’t worry so

much.

She likes to swim and is on a local swim team. She also likes to draw,

especially cartoon-type characters. She has a dog named Dodi. Her fa-

vorite color is blue and her favorite subject is history. Evie is a deep

thinker and asks hard questions that matter. We at Hampton Baptist will

surely be challenged to the depths of God’s wisdom as we learn from and

grow with Evie Gaffney.
