When Worlds Collide

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU SEE FOR

SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THE YEARS AHEAD?

Facing the Challenges of Special Education in the New Millennium

We’re going to start here with…….

Cultural Diversity Community and Poverty Aging

Did you know that the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) was founded here at Teachers College more than 80 years ago? There is a LONG tradition of advocacy and policy development originating from this College, with TC alumnae throughout the globe helping to make a difference in the lives of children and families…and we will meet some of them in the weeks ahead….and read about their work as they tackle the Colliding Worlds! YOU ARE BECOMING A PART OF THAT HISTORY --Remember that!

So…here we go…

• You will find ALL of the readings for the 3 target areas posted on Moodle. Check the dates which are listed. During those time periods Discussion Forums will begin and Reflective Papers will be Due.

• All 2-credit students must participate in all 3 discussions and submit Reflections.

• 1-credit students can choose to participate in ONE of these Discussions.

• You will receive feedback from our first Discussion and Reflection before the next Forum opens…so you have a sense of what the assessment will look like. Watch for that feedback…coming soon!

…more points to consider…• All students (1-2 credit) will be asked to review the short

interviews I will be having with each of our authors (TC alums). Even if you’re not participating in the Forums or Writing, you need to “listen in” to hear what they have to say.

• All students will be participating in the final Conference Readings Discussion and Reflection. We’ll be having some exciting speakers that you won’t want to miss! Stay tuned for that as the semester proceeds.

• Don’t wait until the end to seek help in navigating Moodle or the interviews or Discussion Forums. There is no right or wrong time to step back and see if you’re on track. Check in with myself or Sarah Mallory (T.A.) if you “need a tow”!

Understanding better our Colliding worlds… Facing our profession’s/society’s wrongness…

Are just some of the areas I hope we will tackle for the rest of the semester…the journey continues…enjoy it!
