PREFACE

The Saint Mary's University Fact Book is a compilation of historical and current data designed to

facilitate internal communication, provide data to use in decision‐making, planning and

improvement efforts, and answer frequently asked questions about the university.

The Saint Mary’s Fact Book is compiled and maintained by the Office of Institutional Research

and released annually in the fall.  The current and previous versions of the Saint Mary’s Fact

Book may be found online at http://www.smumn.edu/welcome‐tobrst‐marys/offices‐

services/institutional‐research. Requests for additional or more detailed information are always

welcome and should be directed to Kara Wener, Director of Institutional Research.

Data are presented in varying time frames often following mandatory federal reporting

guidelines; notes on data time frames may be found in the tables’ footnotes.   The Saint Mary’s

Fact Book is presented in six chapters: academic profile, enrollment profile, student profile,

faculty and staff profile, financial data, and Nairobi and Jamaica data. Throughout the Saint

Mary’s Fact Book, data is often presented in terms of the university’s two primary academic

undergraduate and graduate levels, the Bachelor of Science completion program, master’s

programs, the Education Specialist program, and three doctoral programs. The SGPP are based

on both the Twin Cities and Winona campuses, with centers in Rochester, Apple Valley, and

Oakdale, MN.  Also of note, data from programs offered in Nairobi, Kenya and Mandeville,

‐A class section is an organized course offered for credit, identified by discipline and number, meeting at a stated time or times in a classroom or similar setting, and not a subsection such as a laboratory or discussion session. Undergraduate class sections are defined as any sections in which at least one degree-seeking undergraduate student is enrolled for credit. Excluded are distance learning classes and noncredit classes and individual instruction such as dissertation or thesis research, music instruction, or one-to-one readings. Excluded are students in independent study, co-operative programs, internships, foreign language taped tutor sessions, practicums, and all students in one-on-one classes. Each class section is counted only once and is not duplicated because of course catalog cross-listings.

‐Only courses offered through the undergraduate College are included, i.e., bachelor completion courses are excluded.

Between fall 2010 and fall 2011, the university changed its definition of a full-time graduate-level student. In fall 2010 and earlier, a graduate student had to be enrolled in 8 credits or more to be considered a full-time student. In 2011, the definition of full-time graduate student changed to require a student be enrolled in 6 credits or more to be considered a full-time graduate student. This policy shift has caused the number of graduate students considered full-time to increase and the number of graduate students considered part-time to decrease.
