What is the Integrated ASB?
The Integrated ASB is the first major upgrade to the
Prince of Wales Hospital in 25 years, delivering state-
of-the-art infrastructure that will support new and
innovative approaches to acute healthcare and
provide staff with purpose-designed and built facilities
that support contemporary clinical practice.
Health-related academic and translational research
spaces will be collocated with clinical services. These
include laboratories and spaces to support
collaboration and the testing and trialing of new
models of care and innovative treatments.
Partnering to create opportunities
The Randwick Hospitals Campus has had teaching
affiliations with UNSW Sydney for nearly 60 years.
The Integrated ASB leverages this long-standing
partnership by providing a physical and working
integration between the Hospital and UNSW.
The new building embeds research, education and
training initiatives with clinical activities and
strengthens links between clinicians and researchers,
providing important insights into current healthcare
practice that will lead to learning and advancement in
the way healthcare is delivered.
This will help position the Randwick Health and
Education Precinct at the forefront of health research
and education internationally, attract and retain
outstanding clinicians, health professionals and
academics, drive better healthcare outcomes for
patients and generate economic benefits for the
community.

Enhancing the patient experience
The new and expanded facilities, together with
innovative approaches to clinical services, place the
patient experience at the centre of healthcare
delivery by:
Improving services and technology to deliver
contemporary models of care
Integrating health services with education and
research to foster a culture of discovery and
innovation and a rapid translation of research
results to bedside care
Fostering calm through enhanced connectivity
and intuitive wayfinding that helps patients reach
their destination and access the required health
services
Promoting wellbeing by providing safe, green
and open public spaces that connect with
internal areas.

Planning the Integrated ASB
Health and urban master planning are important for
considering the new hospital in the context of the
broader community, so that the needs of our
changing city can be accommodated now and into
the future. This approach has informed all stages of
planning for the new hospital building.
The project has finalised the Detailed Design phase
and is undertaking the change and commissioning
planning process to prepare to care for patients
when the new Acute Services Building opens in
2022.
Staff, clinicians, health consumers and the
community have played a key role in the design and
planning process, helping deliver new hospital
facilities and services that respond to the needs of
patients, carers, families, local residents and the
broader community.
Where are we up to now?
Site preparation and early works are now complete
and construction to prepare the foundations for the
main building commenced in mid 2019.
Works required to enable the extension of the
Integrated ASB across Hospital Road as well as
future-proof construction of the broader Randwick
Campus Redevelopment began in late 2019.
Delivering the Project
The NSW Government is investing up to $780
million to upgrade the Prince of Wales Hospital.
This investment includes UNSW Sydney’s
commitment to funding additional research,
education and training facilities.
We are focused on delivering world leading health
infrastructure that responds to the increasingly
complex and evolving needs of our community now
and into the future.
Health Infrastructure continues to work closely with
the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District,
Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Randwick
Campus Redevelopment Consumer and Community
Advisory Committee, UNSW Sydney, Randwick City
Council and across NSW Government to plan and
deliver the Randwick Campus Redevelopment.
The Integrated ASB is part of our growing focus on
embedding academic rigour in the daily health and
wellbeing interactions we have with patients. These
interactions give us important insights into current
healthcare delivery while providing the opportunity
to learn and improve models of care going forward.

Community engagement has been a core element in the planning and design of the new Integrated Acute Services Building. As we enter the commissioning phase, I look forward to leading our dedicated Committee in ongoing, meaningful collaboration with the project team and partners to ensure community input continues to inform the delivery of patient and community-focused health services and facilities.

Strengthening the Randwick Health and Education Precinct
The new Integrated ASB is an opportunity to define the long-term direction for the expanded Randwick Health
and Education Precinct, revitalise public domain and improve accessibility. Significant planning between
Precinct partners has informed a new building that enables closer collaboration with UNSW and strengthens the
health, research and education presence at Randwick.
Partnering with the community
Community partnerships in planning the Randwick
Campus Redevelopment are essential so that we
can deliver new hospital facilities and services that
respond to the needs of patients, carers, families,
local residents and the community.
Consumers and community are a key part of the
design and planning process, and we have an active
group co-designing health services and facilities with
the project team. If you would like to join our team
please call us on 1800 571 866.
Accessibility and public domain
The design for the Integrated ASB has also
considered how the new building will relate to
surrounding public spaces and infrastructure,
including the Randwick Hospitals Campus, UNSW,
South East Light Rail and nearby retail precincts.
New design features and changes to traffic
conditions that will enhance the local built
environment as well as improve accessibility
include:
A new ‘hospital square’ with pedestrian and
vehicle access from Botany Street and a new
public drop-off
Art and culture program
Green outdoor spaces, including internal and
external courtyards
Improvements to road and pedestrian
infrastructure on Magill and Botany Streets
Lowering of a section of Hospital Road and
closure to through traffic from High Street
Opening of Magill Street between 7am and
10pm
Emergency Department access, patient
parking and drop-off from Magill Street.
These features will also support the next phase of
development to the north of the Integrated ASB,
including the Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1
and Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre as
well as the UNSW Health Translation Hub.
