THE HUMAN BRAINBy Osanyinpeju Hammed on July 11th, 2013

The human brain has an estimated storage capacity of256 exabytes (or 256 billion gigs), the equivalent of 1.2 billionaverage PC hard drives, enough CDs to make a stack whichwould reach beyond the moon and 15 libraries for every personon the planet.

The brain is the center of the nervous system in all vertebrateand most invertebrate animals—only a few invertebrates suchas sponges, jellyfish, adult sea squirts and starfish do not haveone, even if diffuse neural tissue is present. It is located inthe head, usually close to the primary sensory organs for such senses as vision, hearing, balance, taste, and smell.

The brain of a vertebrate is the most complex organ ofits body. In a typical human the cerebral cortex (the largestpart) is estimated to contain 15–33 billion neurons,[1] eachconnected by synapses to several thousand other neurons. These neurons communicate with one another by means oflong protoplasmic fibers called axons, which carry trains ofsignal pulses called action potentials to distant parts of thebrain or body targeting specific recipient cells.Physiologically, the function of the brain is to exert centralized control over theother organs of the body. The brain acts on the rest of the body bothby generating patterns of muscle activity and by drivingsecretion of chemicals called hormones. This centralizedcontrol allows rapid and coordinated responses to changesin the environment. Some basic types of responsiveness suchas reflexes can be mediated by the spinal cord or peripheral

ganglia, but sophisticated purposeful control of behaviorbased on complex sensory inputrequires the information-integrating capabilities of a centralized brain. From a philosophical point of view, what makes thebrain special in comparison to other organs is that it forms thephysical structure that generates the mind. As Hippocrates putit: "Men ought to know that from nothing else but the braincome joys, delights, laughter and sports, and sorrows, griefs, despondency, and lamentations."[2] Through much of history, the mind was thought to be separate from the brain. Evenfor present-day neuroscience, the mechanisms by which brainactivity gives rise to consciousness and thought remain verychallenging to understand: despite rapid scientific progress, much about how the brain works remains a mystery. Theoperations of individual brain cells are now understood inconsiderable detail, but the way they cooperate in ensemblesof millions has been very difficult to decipher. The mostpromisingapproaches treat the brain as a biological computer, very different in mechanism from electronic computers, butsimilar in the sense that it acquires information from thesurrounding world, stores it, and processes it in a variety ofways.

This article compares the properties of brains across theentire range of animal species, with the greatest attention tovertebrates. It deals with the human brain in so far as it sharesthe properties of other brains. The ways in which the human brain differs from other brainsare covered in the human brain article. Several topics thatmight be covered here are instead covered there because muchmore can be said about them in a human context. The mostimportant is brain disease and the effects of brain damage, covered in the human brain article because the most commondiseases of the human brain either do not show up in otherspecies, or else manifest themselves in different ways.

Among the changes that occur in the body when childrenhit puberty, there is a slightly reduced communication timebetween neurons. "If you don't get rid of the noise or less usefulinformation, it is a problem," said Tsien. While each neuronaverages 3,000 synapses, their continuous exposure to largequantities of information and experiences demands that thebrain erase some of the old information to make room for new. This is probably why we lose the ability to speak a foreignlanguage perfectly after the onset of sexual maturity.

The body is made up of billions of cells. In the nervous systemthese cells are called neurons. They are specialized to carrymess ages to the brain, and they connect to ot her neuronsthrough branch - like structures called dendrites.Every timeyou learn something new-a new word, how to ride a bike orplay the flute-your neurons develop new connections to otherneurons. In fact, your brain eventually will form trillions ofconnections-that's more connections than there are stars inthe entire universe!

HUMAN ULCERBy Osanyinpeju Hammed on July 6th, 2013

Causes, Symptoms, DiagnosisAnd Treatment ! Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammationand sores (ulcers) in the lining of the large intestine (colon ).It usually affects the lower section (sigmoid colon) and therectum. But it can affect the entire colon. In general, the moreof the colon that is affected, the worse the symptoms will be.The disease can affect people of any age. But most people whohave it are diagnosed before the age of 30.

What are the causes of ulcerative Colitis? Experts aren’t sure what causes it. They think it might becaused by the immune system overreacting to normal bacteriain the digestive tract. Or other kinds of bacteria and virusesmay cause it.

You are more likely to get ulcerative colitis if other people inyour family have it.

Symptoms are:

1. Belly pain or cramps.

2. Diarrhea.

3. Bleeding from the rectum.

4. Some people also may have a fever, may not feel hungry andmay lose weight. In severe cases, people may have diarrhea 10to 20 times a day.

5. The disease can also cause other problems, such as jointpain, eye problems, or liver disease.

In most people, the symptoms come and go. Some people gofor months or years without symptoms (remission). Then theywill have a flare-up. About 5 to 10 out of 100 people withulcerative colitis have symptoms all the time.

How Is Ulcerative Colitis Diagnosed?

Doctors ask about the symptoms, do a physical exam, and doa number of tests. Testing can help the doctor rule out other

problems that can cause similar symptoms, such as Crohn’sdisease, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulitis.

How Is It Treated?

Ulcerative colitis affects everyone differently. Your doctor willhelp you find treatments that reduce your symptoms and helpyou avoid new flare-ups.

If your symptoms are mild, you may only need to use over-the-counter medicines for diarrhea (such as Imodium). Talkto your doctor before you take these medicines.

Many people need prescription medicines, such asaminosalicylates, steroid medicines, or other medicines thatreduce the body’s immune response. These medicines can stopor reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

MONKEY ORCHIDBy Osanyinpeju Hammed on June 29th, 2013

Who can guess what the image above is?If you areseeing this for the first time their is 99. 9% assurance thatyou would be wrong.Come to think of it by mere looking at itan average human will think of it as been a monkey or a babymonkey that's not very hard to guess how the Monkey Orchidgot its name, but ever since photos of it started circulating onthe internet about a year ago, people have had a hard timebelieving such a flower actually exists. As photoshoped as it may look, the Monkey Orchidactually exists, and yes, it really does match the grinningface of a very small monkey. The scientific name of this veryrare flower is Dracula simia, with the first part hinting atthe resemblance between its two long spurs to the fangs ofBram Stoker’s famous vampire count, and the second meaning“monkey” in Latin. It only grows in the mountainous regions of

Ecuador, Colombia andPeru, at an elevation of between 1,000and 2,000 meters above sea level, but there are a few luckycollectors who have managed to grow it in “captivity”. TheMonkey orchid is not season specific, and in its natural habitatit can flower at any time. As if its striking resemblance to amonkey’s face wasn’t astounding enough, this flower actuallysmells a lot like a ripe orange, as well. Which is kind of ironic, because with a face like that you’d expect it to smell likebananas, right? Organisms are so diverse that some plant would haveresemblance of an animal and vice versa, sometimes havingboth animal and plant features such as euglena that has bothanimal and plant properties. With this article i hope any time you come across this specieagain you would not mistaken it for a monkey.

Inner structure Are you aware of your inner structure ? There are billions ofactions going on in your inner body as you are reading this.Allthe actions doing fine in a right proportion, which is the reasonfor your still been alive and active till this moment.Follow meas i take you round about your inner structure.

Squirting high: The human heart is pumping with enormouspressure, capable of squirting blood up to 9 meters high. Nowonder you can feel your heartbeats. It never stops and sends

blood against gravity up to the head, and at the same timedown to the rest of your body parts. 100,000km: The length of your blood vessels is about100,000km. To understand this distance – the circumferenceof earth is about 40,000km. The distance between the earththe moon is about 300,000km. So if we take the blood vesselsof 3 people, and connect them edge to edge – we could easilystep where Neil Armstrong did. Women’s heart beat faster than men’s: The main reason forthis is that women’s hearts tends to be a bit small than men’s,but needs to pump the same amount of blood to the body parts,in the same amount of time. The left lung is smaller than the right: This is to make roomfor the heart. most people has a heart that tends to lean to theleft, which pushes the left lung. You can live without a significant amount of inner organs:The human body may seem fragile, but it can definitely livewithout the stomach, the spline, 75% of the liver, 80% of theintestines, one kidney, one lung and any productive organ. Itwouldn’t feel so great, and you’ll have to be under medication– but it won’t kill you. Saliva at 160kph: During a sneeze the spit particles can reachup to 160kph. the sneeze is very dangerous while driving –there is no way of sneezing with your eyes open, which causeda few road accidents already. Who snores more?: 60% of men and 40% of women upto the age of 60 snore. In most cases a snore can reach 60decibels. but some people can even reach 80 decibels – sameas a concrete drill.           5 Senses Below are the actions perform by the five senses of thebody, some sound rare but that's just the simple fact for you.

Who will blink first?: Women blink twice as much as men.The average person blinks around 13 times a minute. Blinking is very important to the eye’s health: It helps coverthe eye with liquid that has enzymes and Lubricating fluid, that protects it. The strongest: The outer muscles that moves the eye ballare the strongest muscles in the body, relative to the amountof strength they require: They are stronger 100 times thanneeded. Blue, but temporary: Many babies are born with blue eyes, but they wont stay that way for long. The reason for that isthe pigment called “Melanin” that sometimes sinks in the eyescornea after birth. This process require exposure to ultravioletlight, which in the end reveals the child’s real eye color. Remember 50,000 scents: Our nose can remember 50,000different smells, many of them are burnt into our memory formany years. but that’s nothing compared to men’s best friend– the dog’s nose is sensitive 1,000,000 times more than ours. The last to go: The last sense that disconnects while dyingis the sense of hearing. The first one being eye vision, followedby taste, smell and touch. See for a distance: The longest distance that you can gaze intowithout any help is about 2.4 million light years – 225 trillionkilometers. This is the distance to the Andromeda galaxy, which you can see in bright sky.

Noise sensitive: The smallest noise can make our pupilsdilate - this is one of the reasons why surgeons are botheredby noise - dilation of the pupil might cause to be blinded withlight , that can cause a disaster. From birth to old age: Our eyes stay the same size fromthe moment we are born until we are old age, but the ears andnose does not stop growing. That is why if someone did a nosesurgery when he was young – you can see his nose changingover the years. The strongest organ in our body is the tongue: You maynot able to lift weights with it, but relative to it’s size, this isthe strongest muscle in body that works almost nonstop bytalking, eating and swallowing.

the eye we are able to view everything around us but their arealso essential parts of the eye that makes it possible for the eyeto perform it's role which are: The Ciliary Muscles : It support the lens and attach it tothe wall of the eye .Due to their concentration and expansion it alter the focal length of the lens changing it's shape. We areable to see both near and far object with ease with the aid ofthe ciliary muscles. The Cornea : it is the thick transparent bulge in the front ofthe eye.It serves as a protective covering in front of the lens andallows light into the eye.It also partly focuses the light enteringthe eye. The Aqeous humour : It is the transparent liquid betweenthe cornea and the lens and the vitreous humour is a jelly-likeliquid between the lens and the rest of the eyeball. These liquidsserve mainly to keep the eye in it's spherical shape. Iris : It is the part which gives the colour of the eye.Ithas a tiny opening at its centre called the pupil which regulatesthe quantity of light entering the eye .The pupil looks blackbecause the inner layer of the eye,the choroid, is black. The Crystalline lens : It focuses the light from the objecton to the light sensitive retina. The Retina : The Image is formed on the retinawhich consist of the light sensitive nerve endings which areconnected to the optic nerve. The optic nerve conveys thesensation of sight to the brain. The Yellow spot : It is the most sensitive spot of the retinaand also where the light entering the eye are usually broughtto focus with the clearest image formed. The Blind spot : It is the exit of the optic nerve from theretina which is insensitive to light. Major optical system of the eye consists of the thecornea, the lens, the aqueous and the vitreous humour .Theretinal transmits the impression created on it by this image tothe brain through the optic nerve. The brain then interpretesthe impressions.             THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE HUMAN EYE

• Each eye weighs ¼ ounce, measures less than 1 inch indiameter, and is shaped like a slightly flattened ball.

• We should never put anything in or near our eyes, unlesswe have a reason to use eye drops. We would only do thatif our doctor or parent told us to use them.

• Blinking helps to wash tears over our eyeballs. That keepsthem clean and moist. Also, if something is about to hitour eye, we will blink automatically.

• Our body has some natural protection for our eyes.

• Our eyelashes help to keep dirt out of our eyes.

• Our eyebrows are made to keep sweat from running intoour eyes.

• Our eyes are very important to us, and we must protectthem. We don't want dirt, sand, splinters or even fingersto get in our eyes. We don't want our eyes to get scratchedor poked. That could damage our sight!

• The study of the iris of the eye is called iridology.

• The shark cornea has been used in eye surgery, since itscornea is similar to a human cornea.

• The number one cause of blindness in adults in theUnited States is diabetes.

• The eyeball of a human weighs approximately 28 grams.

• The eye of a human can distinguish 500 shades of thegray.

• The cornea is the only living tissue in the human bodythat does not contain any blood vessels.

• The conjunctiva is a membrane that covers the humaneye.

• Sailors once thought that wearing a gold earring wouldimprove their eyesight.

• Research has indicated that a tie that is on too tight camincrease the risk of glaucoma in men.

• People generally read 25% slower from a computerscreen compared to paper.

• Men are able to read fine print better than women can.In the United States, approximately 25,000 eye injuriesoccur that result in the person becoming totally blind.

• All babies are colour blind when they are born.

• A human eyeball weighs an ounce.

• If the lens in our eye doesn't work quite right, we can getglasses to help us see. Glasses have lenses in them thatwork with our eye's own lens to help us see better.

• Babies' eyes do not produce tears until the baby isapproximately six to eight weeks old.

• Choose polycarbonate lenses for eye wear and sun wear. They are strong, durable, and impact resistant.

• The reason why your nose gets runny when you arecrying is because the tears from the eyes drain into thenose.

• The most effective sunglasses provide at least 98 percentprotection from both UVA and UVB rays.

• The most common injury caused by cosmetics is to theeye by a mascara wand.

• Some people start to sneeze if they are exposed tosunlight or have a light shined into their eye.

• Your body protects your eyes. Bony sockets guardagainst impact; eyebrows provide shade; eyelids andeyelashes keep things out of eyes;and tear ducts moisteneyes.

• The highest recorded speed of a sneeze is 165 km perhour.

• When using a computer, adjust the lighting and sit atleast 20 inches away from the screen in order to reduceglare.

• Smoking increases the risk of some eye diseases such asage-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

• People sometimes have red eyes in photographs, especially those taken with a flash, due to the light thatreflects off the blood vessels of the retina.

• It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.

• The space between your eyebrows is called the Glabella.

• Inside our eye, at the back, is a part called the "retina."On the retina are cells called "rods" and "cones." Theserods and cones help us to see colors and light.

• Just behind the pupil is a lens. It is round and flat. It isthicker toward the middle.

• Over the front of our eye is a clear covering called the"conjunctiva."

• One in every 12 males is color blind. Color blind doesnot mean you see in black and white, but that you havetrouble telling the difference between certain colors.

• The white part of our eye is called the "sclera." At thefront, the sclera becomes clear and is called the"cornea."

• When you blink, you shut your eyes for 0.3 seconds. That’s a total of 30 minutes each day!

• Certain patterns confuse your eyes and brain, causingyou to misjudge the size of a circle or the length of a line.

• The retina is about the size of a postage stamp. It has 130million light sensitive cells.

• Around the pupil is a colored muscle called the "iris." Oureyes may be BLUE, BROWN, GREEN, GRAY OR BLACK,because that is the color of the iris.

• Our eyes have many parts. The black part on the front ofour eye is called the "pupil." It is really a little hole thatopens into the back part of our eyes.

• Your eyes blinks over 10,000,000 times a year!

• Your eye is always making tiny, jittery movements. Eachtime your eye moves, it receives new information. Thiscontinuous supply of new information helps you seeimages.

• Around the world, an adult goes blind every five secondsand a child goes blind every minute.

• Light-sensitive cells in the retina include rods and cones.Rods let us see shape and movement. Cones combinethe three main colors—red, blue, and green—to let us seethousands of colors.

Now you see how important the human eye is verycrucial for mankind,so take care of your and don't joke withit. It's too fragile to handle helplessly.

THE HUMAN HEARTBy Osanyinpeju Hammed on July 11th, 2013

Heart is one of the most important organ in the bodyof higher animals including human being which play the role

of pumping machine in the body. So how much do you knowabout this organ?what are it's primary assignment? You don'thave to go anywhere the answers are here.

• Early Egyptians believed that the heart and other majororgans had wills of their own and would move aroundinside the body.

• An anonymous contributor to the HippocraticCollection (or Canon) believed vessel valves keptimpurities out of the heart, since the intelligence of manwas believed to lie in the left cavity.

• Plato theorized that reasoning originated with thebrain, but that passions originated in the “fiery” heart.

• The term “heartfelt” originated from Aristotle’sphilosophy that the heart collected sensory input fromthe peripheral organs through the blood vessels. It wasfrom those perceptions that thought and emotions arose.

• Prolonged lack of sleep can cause irregular jumpingheartbeats called premature ventricular contractions(PVCs).

• Some heavy snorers may have a condition calledobtrusive sleep apnea (OSA), which can negatively affectthe heart.

• Cocaine affects the heart’s electrical activity and causesspasm of the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack orstroke, even in healthy people.

• Galen of Pergamum, a prominent surgeon toRoman gladiators, demonstrated that blood, not air, filled arteries, as Hippocrates had concluded. However,he also believed that the heart acted as a low-temperatureoven to keep the blood warm and that blood trickled fromone side of the heart to the other through tiny holes inthe heart.

• Galen agreed with Aristotle that the heart was thebody’s source of heat, a type of “lamp” fueled by bloodfrom the liver and fanned into spirituous flame by airfrom the lungs. The brain merely served to cool the blood.

• In 1929, German surgeon Werner Forssmann(1904-1979) examined the inside of his own heart bythreading a catheter into his arm vein and pushingit 20 inches and into his heart, inventing cardiaccatheterization, a now common procedure.

• On December 3, 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard(1922-2001) of South Africa transplanted a human heartinto the body of Louis Washansky. Although the recipientlived only 18 days, it is considered the first successfulheart transplant.

• “Atrium” is Latin for “entrance hall,” and “ventricle” isLatin for “little belly.”

• A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s. Theheart of an average man beats approximately 70 times aminute, whereas the average woman has a heart rate of78 beats per minute.

• Blood is actually a tissue. When the body is at rest, ittakes only six seconds for the blood to go from the heart

to the lungs and back, only eight seconds for it to go thebrain and back, and only 16 seconds for it to reach thetoes and travel all the way back to the heart.

• French physician Rene Laennec (1781-1826) inventedthe stethoscope when he felt it was inappropriate to placehis ear on his large-buxomed female patients' chests.f

• Physician Erasistratus of Chios (304-250 B.C.) wasthe first to discover that the heart functioned as a naturalpump.

• In his text De Humani Corporis Fabrica LibriSeptem, the father of modern anatomy, Andreas Vesalius(1514-1564), argued that the blood seeped from oneventricle to another through mysterious pores.

• Galen argued that the heart constantly produced blood. However, William Harvey’s (1578-1657) discovery of thecirculation system in 1616 revealed that there was a finiteamount of blood in the body and that it circulated in onedirection.

• The right atrium holds about 3.5 tablespoons of blood. The right ventricle holds slightly more than a quarter cupof blood. The left atrium holds the same amount of bloodas the right, but its walls are three times thicker.

• Grab a tennis ball and squeeze it tightly: that’s howhard the beating heart works to pump blood.

• In 1903, physiologist Willem Einthoven (1860-1927)invented the electrocardiograph, which measureselectric current in the heart.

• The average adult heart beats 72 times a minute;100,000 times a day; 3,600,000 times a year; and 2.5billion times during a lifetime.

• Though weighing only 11 ounces on average, a healthyheart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000miles of blood vessels each day.

• A kitchen faucet would need to be turned on all the wayfor at least 45 years to equal the amount of blood pumpedby the heart in an average lifetime.

• The volume of blood pumped by the heart can vary overa wide range, from five to 30 liters per minute.

• Every day, the heart creates enough energy to drive atruck 20 miles. In a lifetime, that is equivalent to drivingto the moon and back.

• Because the heart has its own electrical impulse, it cancontinue to beat even when separated from the body, aslong as it has an adequate supply of oxygen.

• The fetal heart rate is approximately twice as fast as anadult’s, at about 150 beats per minute. By the time a fetusis 12 weeks old, its heart pumps an amazing 60 pints ofblood a day.

• The heart pumps blood to almost all of the body’s 75trillion cells. Only the corneas receive no blood supply.

• During an average lifetime, the heart will pump nearly1.5 million barrels of blood—enough to fill 200 train tankcars.

• Five percent of blood supplies the heart, 15-20% goesto the brain and central nervous system, and 22% goesto the kidneys.

• The “thump-thump” of a heartbeat is the sound madeby the four valves of the heart closing.

• The heart does the most physical work of any muscleduring a lifetime. The power output of the heart rangesfrom 1-5 watts. While the quadriceps can produce 100watts for a few minutes, an output of one watt for 80years is equal to 2.5 gigajoules.

• The heart begins beating at four weeks after conceptionand does not stop until death.

• A newborn baby has about one cup of blood incirculation. An adult human has about four to five quartswhich the heart pumps to all the tissues and to and fromthe lungs in about one minute while beating 75 times.

• The heart pumps oxygenated blood through the aorta(the largest artery) at about 1 mile (1.6 km) per hour.By the time blood reaches the capillaries, it is moving ataround 43 inches (109 cm) per hour.

THE EARTH AND OCEANS OFTHE WORLDBy Osanyinpeju Hammed on July 11th, 2013

The planet is home to millions ofspecies of life, including humans. Both the mineral resourcesof the planet and the products of thebiosphere contributeresources that are used to support a global human population. These inhabitants are grouped into about 200 independentsovereign states, which interact through diplomacy, travel, trade, and military action. Human cultures have developedmany views of the planet, including its personification as aplanetary deity, its shape as flat, its position as the center of theuniverse, and in the modern Gaia Principle, as a single, self-regulating organism in its own right. Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago, andlife appeared on its surface within its first billion years. Earth's

biosphere then significantly altered the atmospheric and otherbasic physical conditions, which enabled the proliferation oforganisms as well as the formation of the ozone layer, whichtogether with Earth's magnetic field blocked harmful solarradiation, and permitted formerly ocean-confined life to movesafely to land. The physical properties of the Earth, as well asits geological history and orbit, have allowed life to persist.Estimates on how much longer the planet will be able tocontinue to support life range from 500 million years (myr),to as long as 2.3 billion years (byr).

Earth's lithosphere is divided into several rigidsegments, or tectonic plates, that migrate across the surfaceover periods of many millions of years. About 71% of thesurface is covered by salt water oceans, with the remainderconsisting of continents and islands which together havemany lakes and other sources of water that contribute to thehydrosphere. Earth's poles are mostly covered with ice that isthe solid ice of the Antarctic ice sheet and the sea ice that isthe polar ice packs. The planet's interior remains active, witha solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates themagnetic field, and a thick layer of relatively solid mantle.

Earth gravitationally interacts with other objects in space, especially the Sun and the Moon. During one orbit aroundthe Sun, the Earth rotates about its own axis 366.26 times, creating 365.26 solar days, or one sidereal year. The Earth'saxis of rotation is tilted 23.4° away from the perpendicularof its orbital plane, producing seasonal variations on theplanet's surface with a period of one tropical year (365.24solar days). The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It beganorbiting the Earth about 4.53 billion years ago (bya). TheMoon's gravitational interaction with Earth stimulates oceantides, stabilizes the axial tilt, and gradually slows the planet'srotation. Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago, andlife appeared on its surface within its first billion years. Earth'sbiosphere then significantly altered the atmospheric and otherbasic physical conditions, which enabled the proliferation oforganisms as well as the formation of the ozone layer, whichtogether with Earth's magnetic field blocked harmful solarradiation, and permitted formerly ocean-confined life to movesafely to land. The physical properties of the Earth, as well asits geological history and orbit, have allowed life to persist.Estimates on how much longer the planet will be able tocontinue to support life range from 500 million years (myr),to as long as 2.3 billion years (byr).

WORLD  OCEANS The mass of the oceans is approximately 1.35×1018metric tons, or about 1/4400 of the total mass of the Earth. Theoceans cover an area of 3.618×108 km2 with a mean depth of3,682 m, resulting in an estimated volume of 1.332×109 km3.If all the land on Earth were spread evenly, water would riseto an altitude of more than 2.7 km. About 97.5% of the wateris saline, while the remaining 2.5% is fresh water. Most freshwater, about 68.7%, is currently ice.

The average salinity of the Earth's oceans is about 35grams of salt per kilogram of sea water (35 ‰ salt). Most of

this salt was released from volcanic activity or extracted fromcool, igneous rocks. The oceans are also a reservoir of dissolvedatmospheric gases, which are essential for the survival of manyaquatic life forms. Sea water has an important influence onthe world's climate, with the oceans acting as a large heatreservoir Shifts in the oceanic temperature distribution cancause significant weather shifts, such as the El Niño-SouthernOscillation.

The abundance of water on Earth's surface is a uniquefeature that distinguishes the "Blue Planet" from others in theSolar System. The Earth's hydrosphere consists chiefly of theoceans, but technically includes all water surfaces in the world, including inland seas, lakes, rivers, and underground watersdown to a depth of 2,000 m. The deepest underwater locationis Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Oceanwith a depth of −10,911.4 m.
