William Buick

Born: July 22, 1988, in Norway. Background: Fluent in Norwegian, Danish and German as well as English.

Announced as a Godolphin retained jockey on November 9, 2014, he is riding primarily for Godolphin trainer Charlie

Appleby as well as John Gosden and Saeed bin Suroor in 2015. Born in Norway on July 22, 1988, he hails from a

family with lots of equestrian background. His mother Maria became a show jumper and dressage rider, while his

father Walter enjoyed a long career as a jockey, being champion jockey eight times in Denmark and once in Norway.

Scottish-born Walter Buick initially rode in Britain and was apprenticed to Newmarket trainer Bernard Van Cutsem

before moving to Norway due to the lack of race riding opportunities in Britain. He went on to partner 1,500 winners,

including 22 Classics in Scandinavia, before spending four years as a trainer at Baden-Baden in Germany. He

returned to Britain in 2001 to become a work-rider for Marcus Tregoning in Lambourn and a part-time race-reader.

William Buick rode out for his father in Germany and for Norwegian champion trainer Vido Neuroth. He would get

up in the middle of winter, ride work in sub-zero temperatures before heading to school for his studies. During the

holidays, he would travel over the Britain to ride work for Reg Hollinshead, Marcus Tregoning and Andrew Balding.

He returned to Balding’s yard at Kingclere, Berkshire, to become an apprentice jockey after leaving school at the

age of 16. His first race came in August, 2006, and his first victory came on Bank On Benny the following month at

Salisbury on September 27. Following a working holiday in Florida, USA, he returned to Britain at the start of 2007

and soon earned a reputation as one of the country’s most exciting apprentices. The jockey gained a first Royal

Ascot success on Dark Missile in the Wokingham Handicap, one of the most competitive races in the calendar, in

June, 2007, and the first Group victory came on Buccellati in the Group Three St Simon Stakes at Newbury in

October, 2008. Buick had his initial ride for Godolphin at Chester on September 13, 2008, finishing fourth on

subsequent Emirates Melbourne Cup runner-up Crime Scene in a Listed race. He ended 2008 as joint-champion

apprentice after a thrilling battle with David Probert, who was also attached to the Balding stable, with 50 winners

each. The jockey continued to do well and enjoyed a breakthrough first top-level success on board the Mick Channon-

trained Lahaleeb in the Grade One E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine, Canada, in October, 2009. He was appointed

stable jockey to John Gosden in January, 2010, despite never having ridden for the Newmarket handler before. The

trainer’s faith in William Buick was almost instantly rewarded as the rider partnered Dar Re Mi to glory in the Group

One Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night at Meydan, Dubai, three months later. William Buick enjoyed his first

Godolphin winner on May 15, 2010 with Claremont in the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury, and rode an excellent

race to take second on board stable companion Miss Jean Brodie in the Group One Darley Irish Oaks the Curragh in

July of the same year. Debussy, trained by John Gosden, captured the Group One Arlington Million under Buick in

August, 2010. He gained his first Classic success in September, 2010, with Arctic Cosmos, who stormed to victory

in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. A superb 2011 for the rider yielded five Group One wins, headed by a

second St Leger with Masked Marvel and a thrilling victory on Nathaniel in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth

Stakes at Ascot. Dream Ahead, joint-champion European juvenile alongside Frankel in 2010, recorded a pair of wins

at the highest level, in Haydock’s Sprint Cup and the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. The jockey enjoyed another

hugely successful campaign in 2012, annexing a further nine Group One races including the Coral-Eclipse on

Nathaniel, the Darley Irish Oaks with Great Heavens and the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes on board Australian

sprinter Ortensia. Following a short spell riding in Japan at the start of 2013, he returned to Dubai to partner his

first Group One success for Godolphin on Sajjhaa, who ran on strongly to capture the Jebel Hatta Sponsored By

Emirates Airline. He finished second on Libertarian for trainer Elaine Burke in the 2013 Investec Derby and continued

to achieve notable victories at some of Europe’s premier meetings in 2013, taking the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York
