FACTS SHEET – STAFF
Newcastle University
NeW Space is a $95 million landmark education precinct in the heart of
Newcastle's CBD, harnessing the latest in technology and innovation in
teaching and learning to deliver a world-class student experience.
NeW Space is part of UON’s City campus, offering University-supported
activities across all faculties including:
• digital library services and information commons • collaborative learning and research spaces • work integrated learning • facilities for industry, professional and community engagement • social spaces.
Lyons Architecture teamed with local firm, EJE Architecture, to create the iconic NeW Space. The building
has been designed to maximise the commanding views to surrounding landmarks with views through to
Stockton, across the harbour and up to The Hill. NeW Space shows the region at its best.
Another highlight of the building is the contemporary teaching spaces, which reflect new ways of learning
that focus on collaboration and group work, as well as harnessing technology. Scattered throughout NeW
Space are social spaces and facilities for engagement with industry, business and the community.
Services in NeW Space include secure bike storage for over 215 bikes for staff and students located in the
former loading dock of University House, plus showers and lockers. A café is located on the ground floor of
NeW Space operating from Monday to Saturday.
New Space’s smart design has been awarded 5 green stars. With a focus on sustainability and minimising
energy consumption, features of the building include external sun shading, high performance double
glazing and thermally engineered aluminum frames. NeW Space maximises natural ventilation, and uses
rainwater harvesting and reuse for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation.

Anzac Bridge – Bar Beach

The 450m walkway and bridge structure, with 360 degree views
of the city and coastline, reinstates the former cliff top walk
between Strzelecki lookout and the Water Board reservoir at Bar
Beach. The walkway commemorates the centenary of both the
WWI landing of Allied forces at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli, and the
establishment of BHP Billiton’s Steelworks at Newcastle.
The $4.5m project incorporates 74 tonnes of stainless steel,
prefabricated offsite to form its distinctive “DNA” strand bridge
trusses. Prefabrication as a construction method was integral to
the design of the walkway, using new construction materials such
as Composite Fibre Technology (CFT) and Fibre Reinforced Plastic
(FRP) to give the structure a fast build time and 70 year lifespan.
Slender precast concrete “Y” columns and raised open deck
walkways give the walkway minimal footprint on the scenic
headland, with native re-vegetation of the surrounding landscape
designed by Terras Landscape Architects.

Angela Hailey and Suzy
Manning, a.k.a Studio Melt, are just one of the many success stories to have emerged from the Renew
Newcastle initiative. Just five years ago the duo crossed paths, instantly striking up a bond having both
completed their Bachelor of Visual Arts just a few years apart. They decided to take their passion for
jewellery making and design to the next level. In 2012 they signed a lease under the Renew Newcastle
program and set up shop in the Hunter Street Mall, Newcastle
A working studio best describes the vision of Studio Melt with the emphasis of the business being on
creating a space where they could work and interact with their customers.

Nobbys Beach & Light House
Did you know?
Nobbys Head Lighthouse
Commissioned on the 1st of January 1858 and is located on the headland. The lighthouse is the third
lighthouse built in New South Wales.
The headland still houses the port's lighthouse (domed building) and Signal Station (which is now
automated) in addition to three vacant cottages that were homes of signal station staff
Nobbys Headland Distances
Do you know how far you walk or jog when you go out along Macquarie Pier (from Nobbys Beach carpark
to the road leading up to Nobbys headland) and the southern breakwater (from Nobbys headland out to
sea)?
The distance from Nobbys carpark to the fork in the road that leads up to Nobbys headland is about 550
metres. If you continue to the end of the southern breakwater it’s about another 800 metres – a return trip
of approaching three kilometres.
Distances within the port
The distance from the breakwater at Nobbys at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour to the coal and bulk
berths at Kooragang Island is about six kilometres. It takes a vessel between 40 and 50 minutes to navigate
up the main shipping channel to the berths at the Port Waratah Coal Services coal terminal and up to 70
minutes to reach the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group coal terminal in the South Arm of the Hunter
River.
