They set out to identify the difference between the behaviour of people who were competent at a particular skill and those who excelled at it. By careful observation, they modelled the behaviour of top psychotherapists and hypnotherapists to elicit the similar underlying patterns. From this exercise, Grinder and Bandler went on to model other top performers in various fields. They developed a model for others to use to improve their performance, to become excellent communicators and to undergo personal change. NLP (neuro linguistic programming) was founded in the 1970s in California by John Grinder(linguist) and Richard Bandler (mathematician). They set out to identify the differencebetween the behaviour of people who were competent at a particular skill and those whoexcelled at it. By careful observation, they modelled the behaviour of top psychotherapistsand hypnotherapists to elicit the similar underlying patterns.

From this exercise, Grinder and Bandler went on to model other top performers in variousfields. They developed a model for others to use to improve their performance, to becomeexcellent communicators and to undergo personal change.

Many other individuals have subsequently contributed to the development of NLP. From itsoriginal ‘behaviourist’ beginnings, NLP has branched into the development and understanding of people’s identity, beliefs and values that underpin their behaviour.

The understanding of the relationship and balance of the conscious and unconscious mind iscentral to current NLP thinking.
