FFSJ Factual Notes Article on Ethics and Etiquette by Tina Tuttle

It is in our nature to be helpful when we see someone struggling. It is in our nature to be kind and as judges evaluating the work of another, we are told to be nice, thoughtful, encouraging and consider-ate with student judges and novice designers. Perhaps that is why it is so hard for us, when we see a new designer or struggling student judge trying to earn her required blue ribbons or 90+, not to stop and offer sage advice or a bit of help with placement of that flower or hot gluing that leaf. “Well, poor thing, she just needed to move that leaf and reinforce her line”, we say in our defense. But every time you stop to help in a situation like this, YOU ARE BREAKING THE RULES!!

“An exhibit must be the work of one person.” When you stop to help, that exhibit is no longer the work of the one person but, rather, becomes a group project, even if all you did was point or give an innocent suggestion. Where does it say that?? This rule is not found under Ethics and Etiquette where you might think to find it but, it should say that in EVERY schedule published. The Handbook, Chapter 14, page 137, Scales of Points for Evaluating Standard Flower Show Schedules, criteria 7.A., indicates that this rule must be stated in your schedule Design Rules! Go now and check to see if it written there>..Did you find it? If not, ADD it so you are in compliance with this rule. It is also mentioned on page 79 X, Exhibiting in the Design Division, A. 3. “The exhibit entered into competi-tion must be the work of only one (1) exhibitor and that exhibitor’s name must appear on the entry card>”.

But what if the new judge or designer ASKS for your opinion and help? As a judge, smile sweetly, and tell them you cannot legally help. Ask them simply to consider the Elements and Principles of Design or ask, ‘what do you think?’ without giving your recommendation. If they ask to borrow a glue dot or wire, of course you are going to provide that to them, but nothing else!

One way to avoid having this situation come up is to build your design AT HOME and bring it to the flower show completed and ready to put in it’s assigned place. When you do that, it is less likely that the designer will be asking for help or that you will offer help to a completed and placed and signed off exhibit. Wait>what did I hear? Some folks are making their design and presenting it at their judges’ council meeting for critique BEFORE entering it in a flower show?? OH NO!! That won’t do either. Each design entered in a flower show should be unique and not entered or judged in any other forum previously. Note Handbook page 137, 7. Design Rules, F. “Designer is on his/her honor that the design being entered has not been previously entered or previously judged in an NGC Flower Show”. Surely, we could take that to mean judged by qualified judges at a council meeting.

And, yes, there is an exception to every rule! Think about the new Companion Designs. Obviously, that would require 2 people to work closely together to create a design. Think also about the Club Competition, Gardens or horticulture Display. In those cases, one or more may work together to cre-ate the exhibit. ALL other designs and exhibits then, are to be the work of ONE person.

If both sides of this issue are aware of this rule, then neither the judge nor the designer will be put in a position of denying requested or unsolicited help. If you see it happening at your flower show, please be brave enough to step in and politely refer to the rules stated in your schedule. Now that you are aware, feel free to keep your helpful nature in check!

From the Judges’ Credentials Chair by Barbara Jacobson CREDIT FOR REFRESHERS:

In order to receive credit for each refresher, accredited judges are required to maintain documentation to show they have the nec-

essary judging and exhibiting credits. The appropriate completed form should be mailed to the state credentials chairman a month

before a symposium to be attended for credit (six weeks for a Florida judge to taking a symposium in another state). It is not neces-

sary to provide documentation of your exhibiting and judging credits unless requested.

The following documentation should be kept in your personal file at least until you receive written confirmation that you have

reached the next level of judging.

Exhibiting: Entry cards and ribbons indicating that your exhibits were judged: For a blue ribbon or 90+ - a judge’s signature and

date. For all other ribbons - a judge’s initials, a check mark or hole punch, etc.

Judging: A copy of your record form signed by the flower show chairman of each show judged. It is also helpful to keep the flower

show schedules and your “Thank You” notes.
