GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF
1. Arrival time for teachers is 7:25 a.m. Dismissal time is 3:00 p.m. The office is
open from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Teachers are expected to use all their time in pursuit of their regular work. TEACHERS SHOULD NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING WITHOUT TELLING AN ADMINISTRATOR OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES. SIGN IN AND OUT WITH MRS. FRY. District-wide examples of unacceptable reasons for leaving the building are routine errands, bank, and grocery store for treats for seminar and car maintenance.
Teachers should be on duty and at their door no later than 7:35 in order to ensure student safety and build student and staff rapport. Please check your mailboxes and make copies prior that time. 2. As a staff, we have agreed that all teachers are will be at their doors and
monitoring hallway behavior between classes, before and after school until halls are clear. This helps keep students safe and is a major factor in reducing misbehavior.
3. Teachers should not leave their classes unattended AT ANY TIME – doing so puts
you at risk. Teachers should NEVER place students in the hall unattended to complete assignments or as a disciplinary measure. Use a departmental partner system to send students to another classroom as a first level intervention for discipline. In case of an emergency, teachers should call the office for support.
4. If teachers leave with their classes to go to another part of the building, PLEASE
LEAVE A NOTE on the classroom door stating where the class can be located. In an emergency, it is extremely important for us to be able to locate you or a student quickly.
5. Teachers are expected to dress professionally (business casual) at all times. At
Benton High School, Fridays are considered “Spirit Days” where Benton shirts (only) and jeans may be worn in place of business casual attire. On occasion, other spirit days may be identified by the administration. Shorts, sweats, tanks tops/dresses are never considered business casual. Physical Education teachers may wear professionally appropriate attire.

6. LEAVE POLICY -- a. SICKNESS/PERSONAL: When it is necessary to be absent from work due
to sickness or a personal reason, you must call for a substitute. The downtown number is 671-4015 (put this in your cell phone). Call as soon as possible but no later than 6:30 a.m. Call Debby Fry (816-261-5258) as soon as you can (she answers the phone VERY early)so she can make arrangements for you at school. You MUST leave/send lesson plans with your department chair AND Mrs. Fry. In situations where continued medical concerns may be considered, please notify Human Resources for guidance on reporting leave under FMLA.
b. ABSENT/SCHOOL BUSINESS: If you are going to be absent and you know
ahead of time, we can make arrangements if you work with Tami. Often times we can either get a teacher to cover a class (that teacher gets paid for one block) OR we can get a sub in the building to cover. Make sure if YOU arrange coverage that you let Debby know. You should NEVER leave another teacher to cover your class without letting ADMINISTRATION know you are leaving.
7. Faculty meetings, professional development and department meetings are held
regularly throughout the year. If you must miss these meetings, you MUST inform your supervisory principal in order for a make-up session to be arranged.
8. Every teacher is expected to have lesson plans. The plans may vary in detail or
style depending on the skill and experience of the instructor, but they must be explicit. All class grading expectations and classroom expectations are to be posted on your gradebook page under “Comments.” The information should include contact information/times for parents to reach you, late work policy and any special grading considerations or directions you need parents to understand.
9. Teachers are expected to adequately and appropriately manage their own
financial issues. Do not have creditors call Benton. Make sure you stay current with your lunch account and pay your balance monthly.
10. Staff parking is in the lot between Benton and the football field/field house. All
teachers should display a parking pass on their rearview mirror. This allows us to identify student vehicles easily. If you forget your pass, please let Debby Fry know the identity of your vehicle to avoid any towing possibility. The school district/Benton High School is not responsible for a towing charge should you not comply with this procedure.
BENTON HIGH SCHOOL – FACULTY HANDBOOK 2010-2011
17
11. During the 2012-2013 school year, security doors with limited access were installed in the school district. You will need your ID badge to enter during the school day. If you lose your ID badge, you should report it immediately to Human Resources (671-4000). You may be charged $5 for replacement. Access to Benton is limited by the school district, and teachers requesting access to the school beyond posted hours must request permission from Dr. Westfall. Coaching staff must inform the Activities Directors of scheduled practices or access to the building.
12. Each teacher will have their emergency rosters and check sheets ready on a
clipboard at their door. Egress information and any other pertinent safety information should be available for substitute teachers.
