What in the world are you talking about?‘3-D’ learning instead of ‘2-D’Use of a computer to interact with the

instructor and other students while in the comfort of your own home…or whatever

Being a part of the new age of ‘technology learning’

Having students actually enjoy and want to attend lectures, discussions, groups, etc.

There is a ‘new’ langauge to learn

Page 3: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

What are the advantages?“Real time” learning and classesAbility to have meetings from a distance…

free!Students can have learning groups or

reviews without actually meetingConferences and discussions to accommodate

everyoneFree access to learning…at their time, their

place and for their specific needs (they can review over and over if they need to )

How does it all work? You need a computerYou need an avatarYou need to know where to go

(teleport)for the class or conference or discussion group etc.

You need to be prepared

Page 5: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

What are the capabilitiesLectures with actual “real time”

interactionLectures “pre-recorded” for review by

students after the lecture…or for review at a later time as it may be inconvenient for them

Discussion groupsReview groups of students or with the

students

Capabilities continuedRecruitmentSimulation practice areasProject development for students who

like to do more than write a paperOnline courses for credit (like

pharmacology, etc .)Creative options for teaching using

multiple methods for a single presentation

Etc., etc., etc.

How would you set up a lecture? You can use standard slides and upload

them as usualYou can use the smart board as usualYou can use interactive hyperlinks to

‘other’ sites, e.g. math review and practiceYou can add a video for presentation into

the lectureAll of it is set up before you start the

lecture

Page 8: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Is it complicated?Loading slides is done the same way

you do nowLoading videos is done the same

way you do nowPreparation take s bit more time as

you can’t do at the last minute before class starts…unless of course you are really really good

Page 9: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Is it interactive?Let’s say you are discussing medical

microbial diagnostics and you lecture a while on the topic offering the usual information…but now you want to see if they have understood the concepts…

Case 5

H.F. 62-year-old male patient was operated due to cranial haematoma. During his stay in the ICU he was ventilated. On day 3 he became feverish (39 oC) with the symptoms of sepsis.

What kind of microbiological testing would be necessary?

A. Blood culture (aerobic, anaerobic)

B. CSF

C. Wound sample

D. Specimen from the trachea

Page 11: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Do you need to have set questions?NO! the nice thing about this is it is in

‘real time’You can ask a question spontaneously

and still get immediate statistical resultsYou can even do ‘jeopardy’ type things

using the ‘challenge’ table…you can ask for volunteers to come forward and actually ask or have the other students ask questions and they ring in just like jeopardy…

Page 12: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Can you access other areas?Yes…virtually any other domain or

‘island’ is available for you to enterAreas can be ‘private’ which means

you need an invitation to enter…like if you are having a closed group discussion or one to one

Page 13: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Can we set restrictions?Yes…most university and hospital areas

are rated PGNo lewd or rough language is toleratedAppropriate dress is mandatedActions must be also PGMost sites will list on entrance what

their preference isYou can set your computer “SLURL” to

be PG always and then no one can enter other areas.

Page 14: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

What’s the cost to me?The great news is …it’s FREE!The cost is to the person or

organization who is setting up their domain or ‘island’

You can purchase things like clothing, etc.

Page 15: Faculty Meeting presentation Northwestern Oklahoma State University Dr.Marianne Szauer December 11, 2009

Can you give me any reasons to not do this now?To paraphrase the words of Ms. Barnum

under whom I studied at Columbia University…

“if we don’t ride the wave of opportunity while it is still rushing to the shore…we will be swept beneath it by the undertow”

There are no other nursing programs that have instituted this type of learning at this time…so why don’t we be the trend setter ?
