Research Context

Research Context

Manchester Law School is part of the Faculty of

Business and Law and is a large and diverse

School with a strong mix of undergraduate,

postgraduate and professional programmes

underpinned by scholarship, research and

professional practice.

We have a focus on skills development across all

programmes as well as ensuring that the student

experience is as good as it can possibly be.

As part of the University 50:50 Vision, the Law

School is making a strategic investment in order

to build on existing research strengths in law and

make significant further progress in this area.

The postholder will be instrumental in devising a

new law research strategy to align with the

University vision and will also be the Law School

lead on research.

The RAE2008 outcome for MMU was excellent. In excess of a third

of our research was rated either world leading or internationally

excellent and we demonstrated world-class outcomes in Healthcare

Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Business and

Management, Social Work and Social Policy, Sociology, Education,

English Language and Literature, Philosophy, Art and Design and

the Contemporary Arts and Performance.

Manchester Metropolitan University REF2014

Our Education research has changed the

approach of every early years professional in the

UK and our research in creative writing and the

arts is ensuring that Manchester remains a

cultural powerhouse exporting ideas and models

for innovation across the international landscape.

Research income is growing rapidly with

applications to major sponsors increasing by 60%

from 2012/13 to 2013/14 resulting in a 100%

increase in research awards. PhD conferment

rates are growing steadily with an increased

number returned to REF2014. The quality of our

research environment is evidenced by the

achievement of standards for the professional

development of staff. We hold Investors in People

“Gold” Status that puts us amongst the top 1.5%

of organisations in the UK, we have EU HR

Excellence in Research accreditation, we are

signatories to the Manifesto for Engaging the

Public in Research and have achieved Athena

Swan status. Our research infrastructure has

benefited from a £200 million investment in the

estate including significant new equipment and

research laboratories.

Planning for the next REF cycle is already well

underway through the adoption of a refreshed

Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy

and accompanying investment in enhanced

resources to support research management

including solutions for assessing quality through

research metrics, compliance with Open Access

agendas and streamlined support for pre- and

post-award procedures.

Our approach to REF2014 aimed to build upon

this RAE success and to increase the research

profile and reputation of the University whilst

continuing to increase the proportion of staff

actively engaged in world class research.

Our final REF2014 submission reflected these

aims as we returned 339 staff with over 1100

outputs into 13 separate units of assessment. We

managed to maintain the scale of our submission

despite a national expectation that overall

numbers might fall in the face of increased

funding selectivity.

Our largest returns were into Unit of Assessments

3: Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing

and Pharmacy and 34: Art and Design, History,

Theory and Practice. Confidence in the quality of

our research was reflected in increased numbers

being returned to Earth Systems and

Environmental Science, General Engineering and

Philosophy whilst numbers were maintained in

disciplines such as Computer Science, Business

and Management, Sociology, Education and

English Language and Literature.

The reach and significance of our impact on the

economy and wider society was illustrated

through 41 impact case studies. Our research

underpins international Government pledges on

carbon emissions in aviation; it has helped to

save lives by transforming the rapid diagnosis of

deadly microbial infections; it directly informs two

of the protected characteristics in the Single

Equality Scheme improving the human rights of

hundreds of thousands of people; we support the

growth of regional businesses and are

transforming the quality of local high streets.
