Programme structure Step 1Attend 4 CPD day courses (oragreed equivalent) of your choice atthe University of Glasgow, Faculty ofEducation. You will have up to fiveyears from initial registration on theprogramme to accumulate creditstowards the Postgraduate Certificate.Step 2Complete Assignment 1 – Reflection.Satisfactory completion of Assignmentwill be worth 20 Masters level credits.Step 3Attend a further 4 CPD day courses(or agreed equivalent).Step 4Complete Assignment 2 – Reflectioninto Action One. 20 further creditsavailable.

Who is the programme for?The new Certificate in ProfessionalDevelopment in Education offers aunique opportunity for all teachers inall sectors to obtain a formalqualification for their professionaldevelopment. For the first time itprovides a pathway for creditaccumulation through attendance atstandard CPD short courses.

Case Study 1Mr Paul Smith is a primary schoolteacher who qualified with a BEdDegree three years ago. Following asuccessful probationary year, Paulhas been employed for the last 18months in St Smithen’s PrimarySchool where he initially took overa Primary 2 class and since then hasbeen teaching in a composite primary4/5 class. During the academicsession 2008/09 Paul took theopportunity to undertake 4 one daycourses of CPD at the Faculty ofEducation, University of Glasgow.He selected the following courses –

• Educating Responsible Citizens• Taking Active Learning Beyond P1• Seasons of the Liturgical Year• Drama and the Curriculum for Excellence for Upper Primary

He then discovered that if he signedup for the Post Graduate Certificatein Professional Development inEducation he could make use ofthese 4 days of CPD to complete thefirst of 3 courses, ‘Reflection’, whichallows him to work towards an MLevel certificate.

Case Study 2Miss Marie Smith is qualified andfully registered to teach maths atsecondary level following a degreeat university and completion of aPGDE secondary programme. Shehas been teaching for 2 years.Following a professional developmentreview in school, Marie decided toundertake a series of CPD activitiesin the Faculty of Education,University of Glasgow. She selected4 one day CPD courses –

• Beginner Teacher Higher Maths• Successfully Teach Higher Maths• Creating Video Tutorials ICT• Planning Change

which were designed to support herdevelopment as a Maths teacher andin anticipation of being assigned aHigher Maths class. While attendingthe CPD events Marie was madeaware of the possibility of achievingthe Post Graduate Certificate inProfessional Development inEducation. To complete the first

course towards thiscertificate Mariewould have to attend a2 hour assessment tutorialand submit an assignmentbased on the 4 days of CPDshe had completed. This wouldcomprise a reflective essay of 3000words and portfolio of evidenceindicating the extent and nature ofrecent professional developmentactivity she had undertaken duringthe 4 days of CPD. If she issuccessful this would result in hergaining 20 SCOTCAT credit pointstowards the Post Graduate Certificatein Professional Development inEducation – which requires a totalof 60 points. Marie then hasoptional pathways to complete thecertificate and gain the additional40 points required eg 4 days CPD +assignment + tutorial x2, 4 daysCPD + assignment + tutorial x1 anda 20 credit course from the menu ofProfessional Certificates provided bythe Faculty of Education.

Case Study 3Mrs Jones is a Primary Teacher inNew Street Primary School. She hasbeen teaching for 10 years and shequalified as a teacher by taking ahistory degree and completing thePGDE Primary qualification. As partof her other ongoing ProfessionalDevelopment she enrolled in thePost Graduate Certificate in PE andsuccessfully completed Course 1.She deferred from the Certificate atthis point because she was going onmaternity leave. When she returnedto work a year later she found herinterests had changed, as had schoolpriorities. She decided to continueher professional development bychanging from the designated PEprogramme to the Post GraduateCertificate in ProfessionalDevelopment in Education whichallowed her to continue her ambitionof gaining credits towards a PostGraduate Certificate and perhapssubsequently a Masters Degree inEducation. This allowed her to selectfrom a variety of CPD opportunities

offered by the Faculty of Educationat the University of Glasgow.

Mrs Jones began by selecting 4 daysof CPD. She chose courses whichwould address curriculum changeand development which had takenplace in her absence. She selected –

• Early Level Conference:Curriculum for Excellence

• Planning Change• Drama and Curriculum for Excellence Primary Middle Stages• Curriculum for Excellence: an Introduction to the Experience and Outcomes in Science at Early and First Level

She then completes the necessaryassessment tutorial and assignmentand achieves a further 20 SCOTCATpoints towards her Certificate. ThenMrs Jones signs up for her first levelcourse in Children’s Literature(20 credits) to complete her PostGraduate Certificate of ProfessionalDevelopment in Education.

The Faculty of Education is pleased to offer,from Session 2008/2009, an innovative newPG Certificate in Professional Development inEducation which aims to provide a coherentaccredited pathway for teachers’ continuingprofessional development.
