GENERAL INFORMATION

The Faculty of Geography conducts research and education on wide range of fields in geography, environmental and earth sciences, hydro-meteorology, nature management, cartography, geoinformatics, remote sensing and tourism. About 800 employees, including 100 professors/doctors of Science and 280 PhD researchers, work at the Faculty. More than 800 BSc and MSc students and approximately 150 PhD students study every year.

The longstanding importance of geographical studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) is evident in the draft plan for its establishment in 1755. A Department of Physical Geography opened in 1863 as part of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. The Faculty of History and Philology added a Department of Geography and Eth-nography in 1884.

The Faculty of Geography dates to June 23, 1938. It initially combined Departments of Physical Geography; Physical Geography of Foreign Countries; Physical Geography of the USSR; Economic Geography of the USSR; Economic Geography of Capitalist Countries; and Cartog-raphy and Geodesy.

EDUCATION

The MSU Faculty of Geography provides rigorous education at three main levels: a four-year BA, a two-year MA and a three-year PhD. Its most distinctive feature is an expansive range of programmes and gepartments.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

There are 16 BA and 15 MA degree programmes grouped according to five areas of focus:• Geography• Hydrometeorology• Cartography and Geoinformatics• Environment and Nature Management• Tourism

PHD STUDIES

In addition to the Bachelor and Master programmesthe third-level Diploma can be obtained, which can be accompanied by the PhD thesis defense. The 3-years education consists of lectures and workshops, with 80% of time still devoted to invention of a PhD thesis under leadership of selected supervisor in any depart- ment of the Faculty. There are intermediate and final examinations both in science and teaching. The Di-ploma certifies ability of holder to conduct research and teaching at higher level than Master and allows to defend the results of his PhD research immediate-ly. Since 2017, phD certificates are issued by Lo-monosov Moscow State University.

FIELD TRAINING

Field training forms a large part, 15-20%, of the undergraduate curriculum. Two kinds of field train-ing programs are included in curriculum-field study courses in the First and Second Year curricula, and a field training internship (so called «practical train-ing»). Both kinds of fieldwork are implementedduring the summer period (after exam sessions) and in most cases offer residential fieldwork with a duration of up to 2 months. The overall aim of field training is to build skills of integrated geo-graphical problem solving. To achieve this students are taught to identify and empirically observe indi-vidual landscape components and landscape process-es along with their interrelations.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING OF SPACECRAFTS IMPACT

The projects have been related to assessment of environmental impacts from spacecrafts. It includes estimates of landscape evolution under pollution from spacecrafts, monitoring of ecosystems recovery, terrain mapping of the landscapes degradation. The studies also provide scientific background for envi-ronmental monitoring and assessing the critical levels of impacts.

MEDICAL GEOGRAPHY

Medico-geographical studies are aimed to identify the diversity and spread of natural-focal diseases in Russia and to develop cartographic approaches for their mapping, including mathematical-carto-graphical modeling. The maps enable to evaluate the stability of epidemic manifestation of individual diseases and the susceptibility of a given territory to disease transmission. The studies also include analysis of urban population morbidity and mortality at dif-ferent levels of territorial differentiation shows various patterns of the spread of these indices depending on natural and anthropogenic factors. Various innovative methods of spatial cartographical visualization of disease risk were developed.

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAITS OF URBAN AREAS OF RUSSIA

Comparative statistical analysis of pollutant emission and emmission processes in 1099 cities in the countryrevealed the role of climate and other environmental factors, fuel mix, and the impact of agglomerationeffect on the distribution of pollutants in the cities’ atmosphere. The system of proposed indicators ofecological conditions of the urban environment can be used in assessment of the environmental compo- nent of quality of life and its modern processes pro-viding the basis for further ecological and geochemi-cal studies of urban areas.

INTEGRATED CATCHMENT STUDIES

SELENGA-BAIKAL PROJECT

Selenga-Baikal project – is an adaptive, integrated hydrologic- geochemical regional characterizationapproach that enables use of the extensive Baikal Selenga drainage basin as a large-scale field laboratory for integrated catchment assessment. Measuring of representative hydrogeochemical characteristics of theindividual and the coupled groundwater and surface water systems; solute, suspension and bedload trans-port over control planes at multiple locations within the basin; and changes in flow and transport charac-teristics during hydrological (precipitation) events, and between hydrological seasons, have been done every year at more than 100 monitoring stations over 470 000 square kilometers of the catchment area.

WATER RESEARCH

CASPIAN SEA

Caspian Sea is an important research area of the Fac-ulty of Geography. Environmental consequences of climate change during the Late Pleistocene is among main fields of the studies. Long-term environmental hydrological and geochemical research of aquatic landscapes and water quality in the mouth area of the Volga River have been performed. Recent HOZIRON 2020 project on Environmental consequences of cli-mate change during the Late Pleistocene is related to comparative analysis of the environmental evolution of the Caspian and Pont Seas during the Late Pleisto-cene, and to understand main features of the develop-ment of these different basins under the conditions of multidirectional climate changes of different scales.

WATER RESOURCES OF RUSSIA

Integrated assessment of water resources of Russia have been focused on long-term changes in annual and seasonal runoff rates, semi-distributed water generation modeling of the large river systems. The estimaare based on the data from over 1000 gauging station for the whole Arctic and Pacific catchments of Russia Large scale assessment of seasonal flood wave revealed transformation during the XX – XXI century. Maximum river discharges of spring flood and depth of runoff of spring flood changes in period 1978-2010 compared to 1946–1977 for rivers of European part of Russia have been revealed.

SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY

The socio-economical investigation at the faculty focus on the geographical aspects of the economicdevelopment. The close tights between the so-cio-economy and the nature research are supported by several research grants from Russian Science Foun-dation, Russian Geographical Society, State authori-ties. The collaborative research includes development of methods of the economic data use in assessment of the present and future hazards risk estimation, the possible scenarios of territorial development as regulated by the social and natural processes, the economic potential of the regions of Russia and the World with the environmental specifics.

The research of social and economic geography of foreign countries focuses on processes of regionaldevelopment in different countries of the world. The main areas of interest are: USA, Germany, France,Japan and other developed countries, frontier regions in the Arctic (Canada, Scandinavia) and in the Trop-ics (Latin America, Africa), politically unstable zones and «hot spot» of the World. The research covers all main topics of human geography, i.e. geography of population, industries, agriculture, geography of innovation, social, political and cultural geography, urban and rural studies. Knowledge on social andeconomic development in foreign countries is applied for regional planning in Russia.

CARTOGRAPHY, GIS AND REMOTE SENSING

MSU GEOPORTAL

Within the framework of the six priority direction of the Lomonosov MSU «Rational Nature Management and Sustainable Development of Russian Regions» the MSU Faculty of Geography initiated the intro-duction of modern space technologies into scientific and educational process. Participants of this project are MSU Faculties of Geography, Biology, Geologym Economics and Pedology, as well as Higher School of Modern Social Sciences, Higher School of Innovation Business and other MSU’s subdivisions (in total — around 20 of them). For research work optimization it was decided to carry out activities on creation of a geo-information system with operational updating of satellite data — the «MSU’s Geoportal». Accord-ing to the plan and specifics of financing the activities a technical assignment was drawn up in «Rational Nature Management and Sustainable Development of Russian Regions».Innovation system of access to spatial data with regu-larly updated information received from Earth remote sensing satellites was established in the Moscow State University. Possibilities of the MSU’s Geoportal enable to resolve several tasks: educational, scientific and research, and production and commercial. Possi-bility to implement production and commercialprojects is one of the important aspects having a stim-ulus to develop applied directions of higher scientific school activities.

ATLASES AND MAPS

Faculty of Geography publish variety of atlases which cover broad environmental topics of Russia. Among them, there is a «National Atlas of Russia» which con-sists of 4 volumes (2004–2008). The Atlas presents sets of maps describing the general characteristics of the territory of Russia, the physical geographic and ecological maps, the maps on distribution of economy and population, historical and cultural maps of Russia. The Ecological Atlas of Russia was published at the end of 2002. The edition was prepared by the Faculty of Geography. The Atlas was created using the up-to- date geoinformation technologies based on a com-bined database. The atlas contains collection of wide cartographic, statistical, text and illustrative infor-mation. The constructed maps visualize the complex ecological problems having place at the territory of Russia. The atlas is available both as traditional (printed) and electronic versions. A new edition is now under preparation. The multi-volume Atlas of natural and technogenic dangers and risks was published in 2005–2010 by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation. The Faculty was involved into the Atlas creation. There is volume representing Russian as a whole, and separate volumes for each Federal Region of Russia. An Atlas of the socio-economic development of Russia was published in 2009.Additionally, the Faculty is involved into various the-matic atlases of Russian regions (Atlas of Khanty- Mansiisk Autonomous Region–Yugra as an example.)

CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH

The investigations of the effects of the climate change on Nature and society combine efforts of all the de-partments of the Faculty. By analyzing the long-term observational data and by the use of climatic models the researchers aim to assess the consequences of the projected atmosphere-ocean- land-society interactions in the future. The developments not reproduced by the existent climate models, such as the extreme weather events, require new methodologies and algo-rithms, which are under construction.

URBAN CLIMATOLOGY

Urban climate research group of MSU is experienced in research in urban climatology and bioclimatology icluding modeling and experimental research. Investi-gation of Urban Heat Island in Arctic cities allowed to collect unique data about urban climate formation during polar night. Modelling of microclimatic fea-tures of Moscow megapolis provides an opportinity to simulate thermal comfort in Russian capital-city in the middle and in the end of XXI century.

NATURAL HAZARDS RESEARCH

The natural hazards investigations at the Faculty of Geography has long history and is shared among most of departments and laboratories. The topics include floods, droughts, earthquakes, debris flows, snow avalanches, tsunami, dangerous ice phenomena on the rivers and in the ocean, permafrost-related hazards, storms, strong winds, etc.Technological and anthropogenic hazards are also in focus including consequences of landscape change by industrial and recreational development. The results are presented in «National Atlas of Russia», «Atlas of natural and technogenic dangers and risks of the emergency situations at the territory of Russia», etc. In the last years the approaches to the natural hazards evaluation and risk assessment are developed in close collaboration with leading international institutions.

FLUVIAL PROCESSES AND EROSION RESEARCH

Since 1960 annual field investigations are performed on the largest rivers of Russia: Lena, Ob, Severnaya Dvina, Enisey etc. The main research goal is naviga-tion maintenance and sustainable channel evolution under the growing human impact. Development of Map of Fluvial Processes of Russia (1:1500000) and regional conservation programs are among the main results. Annual field investigations include channel morphology surveys, flow velocity and water discharge measurements, ground material mapping etc. Erosion and fluvial processes research is done in connection with Interuniversity council on fluvial and erosion research. The council is organized in 1989 by MSU order to join together main experts in the field. Now there are members of 60 universities among the par-ticipants of the council. Since 1989 annually coun-cil organize thematic workshops with a prominent experts in fluvial hydrogeomorhology from Russia, post-Soviet countries, Poland, Germany, Norway. Young scientists conferences are held every 2 year.
