Summary of Question Responses

Response Rate: A total of 120 faculty responded to the survey out of 317 who were sent the

link, for a response rate of 38%.

Overall Remarks: Faculty appear to be generally satisfied with the technology that is provided

currently at the college, although specific improvements were identified. Faculty use desktop

and laptop computers for course preparation, the iPhone is the smartphone of choice, online

video is a key web based tool, along with Google Docs, Blackboard and publisher courseware.

Faculty feel comfortable using technology and integrating it into lessons, and in-person

technology training is important to them. The area faculty would like improvement in is room

layout flexibility and design. Finally, there are a variety of issues that individual faculty need

addressed.

Question 1: Rank importance of technology in classroom.

Every classroom is equipped with four items: computer, LCD projector, screen and speakers,

which received the highest ranking for use.

Beyond those four standard classroom technology items, the following were identified as very

important/important by 50% or more of faculty participating:

1. Connection for Laptop

2. Electronic Classroom (student computers)

3. Wireless presentation pointer (to advance slides)

4. Software specific to your discipline

One third (1/3) of faculty or greater, identified the following items as very important/important:

1. Printer

2. DVD Player

3. Interactive Whiteboard

4. Software for instructor monitoring / control of student screens

5. Document Camera

6. Student polling system (clickers)

Question 2: What type of computer are you using for course preparation?

The majority of faculty are using desktop and laptop computers for course preparation as these

choices were selected by 67% and 58% respectively.

Question 3: What type of smartphone do you use?

Just over half of faculty (52%) are choosing an iPhone smartphone.

Question 4: What web based tools are you currently using with your students?

Page 3: Faculty Technology & Classroom Needs Survey March 1, 2017 · CCRI FACULTY TECHNOLOGY & CLASSROOM NEEDS SURVEY 2 Summary of Question Responses Response Rate: A total of 120 faculty

CCRI FACULTY TECHNOLOGY & CLASSROOM NEEDS SURVEY 3

Online video (YouTube, Vimeo) was the clear choice of faculty with 81% choosing this option.

The second and third options were Google Docs (37%) and Other (32%). Within the “other”

category, 44% chose Blackboard and 41% chose Publisher/course specific software (e.g.

MyMathLab).

Question 5: How comfortable do you feel using technology and integrating technology into

lessons?

Faculty were very comfortable (59%) or somewhat comfortable (38%) using and integrating

technology.

Question 6: Is technology training helpful / important to you?

A clear majority (83%) of faculty deem technology training helpful/important.

Question 7: What mode of training do you prefer?

A majority of faculty (56%) chose in-person group training, and in-person one-on-one training a

close second choice (47%). A third (1/3) of faculty chose video tutorials and handouts as a

training choice.

Question 8: What other needs do you have for your classroom?

A majority of faculty (55%) chose “Flexibility in room layout and seating” and a close second

(43%) chose “screen in different location than whiteboard.”

Question 9: Do you have any suggestions for new technology (hardware or software) or

room design (such as moveable desks) to enhance your teaching?

Approximately 52% of the suggestions related to flexibility in classroom setup and furniture.

Other suggestions related to specific software or technology, lighting, internet access,

consistency among classrooms, or no suggestion.

Question 10: Do you need any other type of equipment that is not technology related?

Approximately 39% of faculty indicated no needs for non-technology related equipment. A few

faculty asked for more dry-erase markers, and the remaining were individual suggestions.

COMMENTS

not sure of the capabilities of the ones I did not choose

White boards/chalk boards available to use while using a projector screen (i.e., projector screen

doesn't cover all of board)

more whiteboard space once the projection screen is pulled down

BIG one--having a room with whiteboard space that runs beyond the screen I use for

PowerPoint! I commonly have whole courses ruined by having to write on the lighted up portion

of the board when I (commonly) switch to diagram a point while in a PowerPoint.

Working computers in student labs, easier log on - often locked

All the classrooms at Bryant University have document camera. I use it in all my classes. lot of

time

quieter rooms where HVAC/mechanical does not interfere; better chairs, more comfortable with

book racks underneath for book and/or foot resting; 75 minutes is long in hard chairs. Clean

walls/no junk. Better podiums - smaller, lighter, no pressed wood.

Some of the above would be more important if they were more widely available or if I knew

how to use them.

CURTAINS

Walls in Lincoln need to block sound better!!!!!

The questions for projector and TV screen are ambiguous. Either is fine, but it is very important

to have one or the other.

Dry erase markers provided in the rooms

"movable" chairs and desks

Students should be facing instructor so they can write and see the board correctly.

tables and comfortable chairs, space and surface to hang charts/post its etc. easily

I like to write on board AND use a whiteboard.

Tables (not desks) for interactive group work

There should be light-blocking shades in classrooms with windows, so videos can be shown on

sunny days at the Newport campus. The glare from the outside causes problems with visibility,

even when the present blinds are closed.

ability to move classroom to one with computers

In some rooms I can't have the screen down for projecting and use the whiteboard at the same

time. Not convenient.

Class rooms must be set up for group work, not auditorium style

mobility to work in groups, form circles, etc.

listed above; too many chairs in some rooms; junk should be removed; rollable desk/table

Better heating/cooling!!!

Lights that turn off in the front of the classroom, but not that back

Improved, adjustable lighting. Better quality furniture with decisions being made after faculty

who use the rooms/furniture/equipment have input. We need one high quality projector and

large screen in room, with additional screens (number and scale of which tbd) for small group

work.

Comments:

I have a TI-Presenter to connect my graphing calculator to the video projector, but it's a bit old, and

it's my personal property. Updated ones that more faculty could use might be nice.

Moveable tables

This is my second time visiting the survey (I hope the first one went through), so I'm not answering

all of the questions. (Although it's telling me they're required, so now I'm revisiting and filling in.)

I think it would be great if faculty were given a Blackboard course shell to work in that isn't tied to

their courses. That way we could develop new courses and experiment with ideas.

Same as Above

It would be helpful to have clickers in every classroom and desks/chairs that are easy to move

around for various seating configurations.

More adjustments to dim lighting.

I need access to software that allows me to capture video content for PowerPoint presentations so

that I don't have to access the web in class, which is not always available.

Electronic classrooms that support a larger group of students (more than 25)

Not at this time

Moveable desks are essential.

No

Classrooms where students have the backs or sides to the front of the room are not great. Students

are writing on their laps or are twisted to see and write. It takes longer for students to get the

information down which means less is being presented.

the types of moveable desks and chairs in room 1156 in Flanagan would be helpful in other

classrooms. Also, establishing larger computerized classrooms with tables and chairs in a center as

well as the computers around the wall such as room 2565 in Flanagan would create a more flexible

classroom.

Room designs are antiquated. Flexible seating would help.

Would love to be able to control all technology in room, such as turning off Wi-Fi, cell phones, etc.

movable tables and chairs, display space, paint walls white instead of cement!

Moveable desks are good; tables with charge units. Laptops and phone use are good tools.

Tables (not desks) for interactive group work

-ability for students to turn off monitors without logging out (all in one computers don't do this)

-ability to see the monitors and the students from the lecture point in the room

I always have difficulty accessing internet when utilizing my laptop for classroom presentations.

No

not really. I guess anything moveable could help.

It would be nice to for instructors to be able to set how long it will take for the computer to go to

sleep mode. Often it is too short. Also, if a faculty member does not log out of a classroom

computer, I have to restart the computer. I can't simply log the person out. Time waster and a bit

annoying.

Yes, Moveable desks.

connections so I can play videos and YouTube

no, old is fine

desk/chair combos on wheels look great, sound great but I've had them in classrooms and the

students don't really care for them. desks versus tables are generally better.

For room design I'd really like to have the whiteboard available when the screen is on, so I can

draw and expand on whatever is on the slide. Right now the whiteboard space is limited when the

screen is in use.

moveable desks for group work

need rollable desk/table to use it or NOT to use it - different during each class. Contact paper or

something so people outside the classroom don't stand and stare at people in the classroom.

The smart classrooms would be great with additional training and wider availability, such as

booking on specific dates (vs. an entire semester).

Many rooms do not have lighting that allows you to darken some of room to achieve a sharp

projection without it being too dark. This is very problematic

Larger desks to accompany at least two students. Look at the comparison in Room #s 6054 + 6068

on the Warwick campus. The desks are larger in Room 605

Less desks in classrooms - very crowded and congested feeling, hard to maneuver with small

rooms and 30plus desks, with only 25 students (Warwick campus)

The ideal electronic classroom has computers AND tables. And please please let's start putting

screens on another wall so white boards are available to use at same time. Please!

aren't working on them

I like teaching in classrooms with tables and chairs, since I find that students can work in groups

fairly easily that way. Desks that are easily moveable serve the same purpose. In my teaching, it is

necessary that rooms can be rearranged. Honestly, it's more about the pedagogy than the

technology. New technology can be great, but if you're not using effective pedagogy, the

technology won't do much to help student learning.

Moveable desks would be easier.

Consistency of technology tools in all rooms

Moveable desks are very important for my classes!!!

google Earth on all computers

Moveable desks

Build in flexibility; no one size fits all.

Yes, but it would be helpful to answer these questions after I have a chance to teach in one of the

smart classrooms this semester. It's my first time using 6308.

Not that I can think of.

Yes. A standing desk/podium for faculty would be better than the low desks with seat. Perhaps the

students would benefit from more active stand/sit furniture as well. Interactive learning could be

served by interactive stand/sit furniture, for instance high desks with soft stools in the rear of class.
