Engineering for Sustainable Development to Achieve the Africa we want
Introduction• Engineering and other interventions are answers and enablers to deliver our FAEO Vision 2063 which is inspired by the AU
AGENDA 2063 and the UN Agenda 2030 on SDGs for people, planet and prosperity and the Strategies contained in the AU
Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 16-25/ Science, Technology & Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA) 2024.
• FAEO calls for the ethical practice of engineering by infusing competences that promote professionalism and zero tolerance to
corruption and high levels of integrity.
• FAEO commits to raising awareness of the importance of accreditation of engineering qualifications and competence assessment
to global standards to allow for mobility and recognition of qualifications;
• FAEO also joins other organisations in building political and financial commitment for the development of national engineering
accreditation and competence assessment bodies for the rest of Africa.
• We have ECSA as Africa’s sole representative in the IEAM family, and we now concerted interest from other countries like
(Nigeria, Rwanda – under the FEIAP mentorship), Mauritius, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe who are in various stages of
the preparation and will ride on the WFEO/IEA MoU and other capacity building efforts.

UNESCO AEW is an excellent platform for promoting quality engineering education and engineering capacity building in
Africa and to cooperate with UNESCO/WFEO/IEA to extend the global reach of standards of FAEO by offering mentoring
programmes and other co-operation activities.
About FAEO• At a General Assembly of 8th May 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya, it was unanimously agreed to merge the former Federation of African
Organizations of Engineers (FAOE) and the Africa Engineering Forum (AEF) formed in 1972 and 2001 respectively, and establish a central
united home for African Engineering Organisations under the name Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO). FAEO
represents the African Engineering Agenda at the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), The African Union (AU) and any
other International Organisations.
• The FAEO constitution was unanimously accepted and adopted. The FAEO Constitution recognises five regional groups to work under
FAEO. The five regional groups are in alphabetical order are:
• Central African Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO);
• Eastern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (EAFEO);
• North African Federation of Engineering Organisations (NAFEO);
• Southern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (SAFEO) – This involved only changing the name from AEF to SAFEO,
aligning to the FAEO Constitution and making minor adjustments to the protocol, secretariat and operations of the former AEF; and.
• West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO).

Global Industry Player Viewpoint• Engineers play a critical role in fueling the global
economy. Industry needs highly educated, entrepreneurial engineers to ensure innovation and technological leadership for us to catchup or leapfrog.
• Industry needs engineers who strive for the best in a high – performance global market.
• Industry needs a new breed of engineer that are:• technically broad,
• commercially savvy and
• globally adept

Africa’sEngineering Capacity Building Put in Context
• The majority of Infrastructure Development is for-seen to happen in the African Continent
• Our wish is by 2024 at least 50% of infrastructure development should be done by citizens of Africa using their beneficiated materials.
• We have the Batoka Gorge Project ? What’s the involvement of our local engineers?
27/11/2019 11
True Global Transformation Vision for the African Continent:
•Citizens within Africa should direct, par-take and benefit from their infrastructure development projects in Africa for their full social and economic transformation.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED?
• The international markets have already entered our space
• E.g Renewable Energy no localised manufacturing for African Governments and Engineers
• The AU Agenda 2063 should address this weakness.
• The real competitor is beyond the boundaries of the African Continent!!!!

FAEO Engineering 2063 Plan – The basis• Engineering a better Africa requires a new paradigm that focuses on building capacity, inspiring the
youth through diversity and inclusion to join the profession and rallying stakeholders to create strategies to achieve sustainable development goals.
• FAEO through its Agreement with the Africa Union (AU) Commission Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology envisions the implementation of Engineering Solutions in the AU Science, Technology & Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA2024) to create the AFRICA that we want.
• FAEO Engineering 2063 Plan intends to develop engineering capacity for a sustainable Africa through partnerships with educators, government, industry and professional engineering institutions.
• a strategic initiative to address the gap in engineering capacity and the quality of engineering professionals.
• recognises that engineering is essential for achieving all the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
• FAEO will lead and co-ordinate the Plan with its partners and stakeholders.

Recommendations and call for Action through Implementation
• We recommend a programme to build the capacity of national accreditation and
competence assessment agencies and underlying facilities, so that those agencies
can be mentored to achieve best global practice.
• FAEO also recommends the building of the capacity of national accreditation and
competence assessment bodies to the point where they can join the Accords and
Agreements as provisional and eventually full members; and seeking partners and
resources that will enable the achievement of these aims globally.
25Engineering for Sustainable Development to Achieve the Africa we want
Recommendations and Action Plans
• There is need to develop regional centres of excellence and hubs for a strategic critical mass
in Accreditation development to facilitate Mobility of Engineers in Africa.
• Sharing known effective models within/ across sectors and nations must be achieved in
Africa.
• There is need for FAEO to create a strong professional Engineering Organisations, industry,
Government and academia linkage which will create the quadruple helix that will
continuously review the strategy to meet the demands of BUILDING QUALITY ENGINEERING
CAPACITY FOR THE AFRICA WE WANT.

CONCLUSION
Eng. Martin Manuhwa,| 27
• Our Aim is to improve the Quality of Education in Africa.
• We need to create good jobs, entrepreneurial and economic growth for Africa.
• FAEO commits to a Capacity Building Programme for the assessment of each African country’s current systems of engineering education and requirements to achieve provisional status with IEA.
• FAEO commits to work with mentors for African countries in the process of making a provisional application and going all the way for the full membership of those that are ready.
FAEO Commitment and Focus on Working with the IEA, WFEO & UNESCO to improve Engineering Standards in Africa
Engineering for Sustainable Development to Achieve the Africa we want
CONCLUSION• FAEO would like to participate in the training of assessors for Africa via our PEIs and Accrediting Bodies by taking part in the IEA Global Reach
Initiative, the Train the Trainer Sessions as well as FEIAP and other partners training.
• FAEO Commits for further development of capacity building to increase the number and quality of engineers, technologists, and technicians, who
meet international standards through opportunities at Africa Engineering Week and other gatherings. To this effect, we request WFEO to rescind
the decision of combining Capacity Building & Engineering Education for the two are complementary and have several mutual exclusive elements.
Africa was not consulted before this decision was made and neither was the chair of capacity building or the chair of all STCs nor the Executive
Council. This landmark decision needs a stakeholder consideration.
• FAEO also commits to Diversity and Inclusion Policies in Engineering and encourage youth, women and minorities to take up STEM subjects leading
to engineering careers!
• FAEO will Engage in Partnership for the Goals with Stakeholders like WFEO, IEA, UNESCO, AU etc to increase mobility and
recognition of engineering as a major force to achieve the SDGs.
