nature“Beauty’s home, Killarney” (as the song goes) is in Ireland’s first great National Park, where Na Crucha Dubha – the country’s highest mountains – ring three gorgeous glacial lakes with heart-stopping views of lakes and peaks, waterfalls, ancient woods of oak and yew, and Ireland’s only herd of wild native red deer. Rare white-tailed sea eagles drift overhead. To the west, seals “pup” in sheltered Kenmare Bay. and on the shores of Valentia Island are the tetrapod tracks – the earliest fossil footprints in the world.

The Meeting of Waters: Let yourself relax – when did you last allow that feeling come over you. Taste the wild garlic and smell the rhododendron as you enter here via Brickeen Bridge, let the shades of purple and soft green caress you and allow the century old oak trees place their arms around you. Swans will float past you in perfect reflection, occasionally spooked, they lift majestically out over Dinis Cottage, remind you of that freedom, long forgotten. Walk arm-in-arm in the footsteps of our landed gentry and peasant ancestors over a leaf-strewn private walkway to a hearty homebaked brunch at Muckross House and gardens.

We headed out to explore the wonderful Ring of Kerry. Taking the ferry across to Valentia Island and headed to geokaun , driven there by Bernie, passionate about showing us the mountain. With curious minds we stepped off the bus and walked up to the viewing point, past stories of legends, told with a soft, lifting tone, to the edge where the clouds lifted and there before us was the splendour of the Skelligs – truly the edge of the world that touched my soul.

Nous sommes allés explorer le magnifique anneau de Kerry. Nous avons pris le ferry en direction de geokaun et sommes passés au cours de ce périple par des endroits magnifiques, tels que l’île Valentia. IntensIté et de l’autre côté de l’anneau, la grandeur de l’élément naturel est saisissante. La péninsule d’Iveragh est traversée en son cœur par une immense chaîne de montagnes, d’où s’élève le plus haut sommet d’Irlande : le Corrán Tuathail. Ces cols forment un paysage glaciaire séculaire classé parmi les plus beaux d’europe.

La Péninsule est également très prisée par les adeptes du surf et de la planche à voile : la qualité des vagues de l’atlantique et des vents du sud propre à ce site offre des conditions sportives optimales.

Walk the beach in one direction and get a facial, with the wind blowing into your face. Turn the other direction and hear the sound of the waves; better than any massage as you take a deep breath of the fresh salty sea air, and you feel so alive. Jump over gates and splash through mud puddles, for the ultimate mud bath.

On a crisp winter morning, we headed up Cloghane in our waterproofs and walking boots to the summit of Mount Brandon, determined to conquer despite the snow on the ground and the thick cloud. We were very proud of our achievement huddled in the shelter clasping our homemade soup – but wondering whether we had been foolish to climb the mountain on such a day – when the clouds parted and for a few seconds the Peninsula opened up before our eyes – and we could see forever.

Par un frisquet matin d’hiver, nous sommes allés à Cloghane en bottes de randonnée et tenues imperméables, bien décidés à atteindre le sommet du Mont Brandon malgré la neige au sol et l’épaisseur de la couverture nuageuse. Très fiers de notre exploit, nous nous sommes abrités au sommet pour savourer une délicieuse soupe faite maison avec une question en tête : avions-nous été imprudents de faire cette ascension par une telle journée ? Mais, lorsque les nuages se sont dissipés et que nous avons découvert la péninsule en l’espace de quelques secondes, nous avions la réponse à notre question. Une vision que nous garderons à jamais en mémoire.

an einem frischen Wintermorgen fuhren wir in wasserfester Montur nach Cloghane und wollten den gipfel des Brandon erklimmen – trotz Schnee und dicker Wolkendecke . Wir waren stolz auf unsere Leistung, als wir mit unserer hausgemachten Suppe zusammengekauert in der Hütte saßen – und doch haben wir uns gefragt, ob wir verrückt waren, den Berg an solch einem Tag zu besteigen. Im gleichen Moment öffnete sich der Wolkenhimmel ,und einige Sekunden lang hatten wir eine endlos weite Sicht auf die Halbinsel.

skellIG IslanDsFurther west still, out to sea, is an extraordinary, far-flung place of pilgrimage: Skellig Michael – one of the wonders of the world. 1300 years ago, early Christian monks built a remarkable hermitage at the top of this jagged ocean crag – then at the further limits of the known world. This mysterious and awe-inspiring place – described by george Bernard Shaw as “part of our dream world” – is now a UNeSCO World Heritage Site. It can be reached (for sometimes a life-changing visit) by the adventurous on a small boat, only when the weather allows.

as we get off the boat that brought us from Portmagee to the Skelligs Rocks, we marvel at the magnificent and desolate lumps of rock, located right at the edge of the world. Our minds fill with the thoughts of the people who have made this journey before, going back over 1500 years. Monks full of piety, troubled souls seeking to out-run reality. Vanquished nobility evading their enemies. Lighthouse keepers wanting to safely guide seafarers. and us, tourists of the 21st century. Sophisticated world travellers with jaded and sated palates, who cannot remember the last time they were impressed by anything or felt a real connection to anything. But our trip to this magnificent world heritage site has changed all that. We are impressed, we are over-awed, we are humbled, and most of all, we are delighted we have discovered a special and wondrous place called Kerry.

I visited the pottery workshop of Louis Mulcahy’s; as I opened the doors I was greeted with a lovely phrase “Fáilte romhat isteach”. “go raibh maith agat,” said I, a language alive.

go to the local pub, order a seafood platter lunch while you sit in front of a huge fire enjoying a pint of creamy, well-poured guinness and listening to traditional music live and the patter of rain on the footpath outside. Relax, you’re home.

herItaGeThere is no other landscape in Western europe with the density and variety of archaeological monuments as the Dingle Peninsula and North Kerry. The Dingle Peninsula is a finger of land which juts into the atlantic Ocean and has supported various tribes and populations for almost 6,000 years. Because of the peninsula’s remote location, and lack of specialised agriculture, there is a remarkable preservation of over 2,000 monuments.
