Decide how much of the 30 cents you should receive for the jobs/work you do in the banana industry chain

Prepare reasoning for why you deserve that amount

Each group’s spokesperson will share their requested amounts and reasoning to the other groups

That 2 billion of our fellow citizens survive on less than $2 per day, despite working extremely hard!

Banana workers in conventional plantations receive no benefits, no pension, no medical care, no guaranteed wage, no holidays… and are routinely sprayed with pesticides deemed illegal in North America

3 US transnational corporations dominate world trade in bananas- they produce and control up to 70% of world exports

In Canada, barely 1% of bananas are fair trade

Cooperatives must make decisions without discrimination, on a democratic basis that also favours freedom of expression.

Businesses must have an active labour union.

Workers must have access to medical care.

If the cooperative makes a profit, the cooperative must invest this profit in public, health, or educational facilities for the good of the community.

Environmental CriteriaEnvironmental Criteria

Activities must be carried out in harmony with ecosystems and must provide sustainable protection for natural resources.

Requires producers to reduce their use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides.

Cooperatives are also encouraged to diversify their crops, to reforest to prevent soil erosion, and to develop organic farming.
