Welcome
Dear Readers: This week, theFairfax Connection turns overits pages to the youth and stu-dents. We asked principals and
teachers from area schools to encourage stu-dents to contribute their words, pictures andphotos for our annual Children’s Issue.
The response as always was enormous. While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and other works of art.
We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays. We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2016 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s Connection.
Please keep us in mind as your childrencontinue to create spectacular works of artand inspiring pieces of writing in the com-ing year.
The children’s issue is only a part of ouryear-round commitment to cover educationand our local schools. As always, the Con-nection welcomes letters to the editor, storyideas, calendar listings and notices of localevents from our readers. Photos and othersubmissions about special events at schoolsare especially welcome for our weeklyschools pages.
Our preferred method for material is e-mail, which should be sent [email protected], butyou can reach us by mail at 1606 KingStreet, Alexandria, VA 22314 or call 703-778-9414 with any questions.

School Again!In 2016, I can’t wait to make
new friends and to learn newthings. I do want to change onething: more math and readingtime because it’s good to haveskills to use later in life and nowin life.
I think it would be cool to be ateacher when I grow up. When Ithink about a teacher, this is whatI think they have to be: fun, smart, patient, kind, friendly, and calm.
I think teachers are brave be-cause they come and teach us andeven read to us. I think they arebrave because they help us byteaching our young minds andhelping us grow. I think my teach-ers, and all other teachers, aregreat helpers to this earth’s com-munity!
—Amanda C. Martin,
Mosby Woods Elementary,
grade 3,
Mrs. Hockenbury
What Do YouWant To BeWhen YouGrow Up?
When I grow up, I will be a vet-erinarian because I will get a lotof money and I like pets.
My favorite one is the cat be-cause cats are cute and cuddly andI also like them because they arevery furry and warm.
My second favorite pet is a ham-ster because they are fun to watchand they are very cute.
My third favorite pet is a puppybecause they are very cute andfurry.
—Jane Morrison,
Mosby Woods Elementary,
grade 1, Mr. Noel
The KissIf I could give my parents a
present that did not cost money, itwould be a kiss and a simple “Ilove you!” I would give them thesweetest, most meaningful hugever.
I would tell them how I am sothankful for having good, kind, and caring parents and how theyalways put a smile on my face. Myparents are the most importantthing in my life.
A kiss is a very special gift be-cause it can’t be bought, it mustbe given and it can turn a bad dayinto a great one.

What Makes A Good Friend?
When you make a newfriend, it’s alwaysexciting. But what is
the difference from a goodfriend and a bad friend?
First, you need to see whatthey do. If they are part of anaughty group you might wantto leave them alone. Next, theactions. If they do stuff youdon’t want to, that’s also a prob-lem. Although you might thinkthat every friend is nice, some-times they aren’t. That doesn’tmean you can’t, though! If youwant to find a friend, find some-one who is nice and caring. It’snot hard!
—Zachary Chae, 11,
Fairfax, Colin Powell
Elementary, grade 6
A good friend is someone whois always there for you and whocan perceive what you feelwithin.
He/she shares the joyful mo-ments and is there for you intimes when you need someoneto be with you, to cheer you upand help you.
A good friend celebrates yoursuccesses and soothes your sor-rows. If something goes wrong,a good friend comes forward tohelp you even without you ask-ing for it.

Sweet, blissful dreamsRun through your brain,Trailing nothing behind them but dust.Leaving you unhappy, restless,Scared. You quickly try to find that small dream again,But it’s already started.Monsters scream in your ear telling you you’re not worth it,that no one should love you, that you deserve to die.Maybe, hopefully, they’ll complete the job.You shut down, everything inside closing. You relish in the fact that you are finally free of their screams…Then they come back. They light their way into your brain, scraping for anything to satisfy their hunger. You laugh and laugh in their faces, spitting out they will never find anything.Knowing they’ve already taken everything out of you.You laugh and cry, hoping that they’ll die and it will end, but you know it won’t.You fall to the round realizing your fate, when that small inkling of a dream comes back. You cry out with joy “He’s come to save me!”You feel all the happiness and strength return to your body and grasp at the shock of it.Everything that you’ve ever loved has come back to save you.To protect you from the demons inside and out.Every bad thought leaves your body and you sigh in reliefThen you wake up. Your eyes blink open. And everything in the world, in yourself, is the same as it ever was.

What makes a good friend, in myopinion, is honesty. Let’s saysomeone liked broccoli and the
person they are trying to befriend hatesbroccoli. You would most likely lie to them. This isn’t really a serious lie but, let’s saysomeone was dating your girlfriend rightbehind your back and that someone is yourbest friend. Of course they would try andhide it from you but eventually you wouldfind out. When you finally do, the honestyand trust that you have built over the yearswould have been broken. This is why hon-esty makes a good friend.

When I grow up I want to play The Doc-tor in the T.V. show Doctor Who. I could bethe first American one in the history of theshow. I would even settle with being a com-panion. If I couldn’t play either parts I wouldat least be a writer for it. I already havesome good episode ideas. For example: TheDoctor can only save five people during anAuton takeover of an alien mall.

The worst thing that has happened to meis when my best friend got a medical con-dition. She didn’t come to school. I calledher, she said she had nerve pains. I com-forted her but I still felt empty. I playedminecraft with her and that made it better. After that day she came to school about oneday a week. I am all full of joy, and silli-ness. Yes, my friend and I are pun buddies, only because we are so punny. That is theworst thing that happened to me.

A good friend is kind, loving, and chari-table. I have many good friends in my schooland I am very lucky. A friend helps you whenyou need it. When you’re sad, mad, or needto just scream you can always go to a goodfriend and express your feelings. Goodfriends tell the truth even if it’s not an easything to hear. When a friend teases or an-noys you for fun it doesn’t bother you. Thatis what I look for in a good friend.

A good friend is someone who you canrely on. If you get hurt or you are in needof help a friend should always be there foryou. A friend should be honest in whateverthey say and do. Friends make you happy, comfort you when you’re sad, and calm youwhen you are mad. Everyone should havea good friend to help them on their journeythrough life.

I want to be an architect or a doctor when
I grow up. I think it would be cool to be anarchitect because I could design all kindsof cool buildings. My dream is to design myown house. It would also be cool to be adoctor, especially a pediatrician. I have al-ways wanted to be a pediatrician. I think Igot the idea from my doctor, who has thesame birthday as me. It would be pretty coolto be able to work with kids AND be able touse cool medical instruments, such as astethoscope.

A good friend is kind to you. If you arenot kind to one another how can you evenbe friends with them. A good friend backsyou up and always knows what to say ifyou are really sad or mad. I have a lot ofgood friends who always cheer me up andalways have my back. You want to have afriend that you can tell what you’re feelingand they will understand. And even if theydon’t understand, they will cheer you up.This is what a good friend is to me.
