TOP 5 REASONS TO JOIN OUR BOOK CLUB: • You meet interesting people. The trick is not to join a book

club full of your best friends. It is a great way to meet new people. Our book club is composed of women of all ages and these ladies hail from all over the world. In addition to gaining quite distinct views on the book at hand, we also gain a window into others lives, which can be so very different from our own.

• You read things that you wouldn’t otherwise read. Which ties to point #1, people outside of your immediate circle of friends are more likely to have different literary tastes. We all know it is more beneficial to read a wide variety of styles, but it is difficult to pickup books outside your comfort zone. Joining our book club is a great way to expose your self to variety. We can learn from both the good and not so good writers.

• Some books need to be discussed. Need I say more?

• You eat great food. The hostess provides soft drinks and dessert and then others bring a small dish or wine to share. We always have something great to eat and drink.

• Sometimes it’s fun just to chat. Finally – we do talk about the book and some discussions are longer than others but we also chit chat. It is just a great way to meet and get to know other women. A book club is a great excuse to make and keep friends. Taking the time to enjoy your self and have some fun with books and other people is reward in itself.We meet the 4th Tuesday of each month from 7:00-9:30pm.

We read all kinds of books suggested by our members – classics, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, romance, sci-fi, etc. There are no book snobs in our group – we read it all! Ask about our inventive way of choosing books to read! If you are a book lover or simply want to expand your reading and social network, please consider joining us. We invite any woman in Fairfield or surrounding subdivisions to attend one of our meetings as a guest or a member. This is a great time of the year to join. Join us for a toe-tapping, bluegrass Christmas filled with humor and nostalgia! The Gospel-singing Sanders family returns to a small church in the wildwood to share their stories of warmth and family amidst a rousing collection of Christmas tunes, all done with good humor and filled with the spirit of the season. The play is a sequel to their 2007 summer smash hit “Smoke on the Mountain” and this installment finds the Sanders clan as musical, quirky, and entertaining as ever. This will be a holiday production that is sure to have you clapping your hands, tapping your feet, and celebrating the pure joy of the Christmas season! OUR JANUARY BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR: Thursday, January 15 a trip to the San Jacinto and Monument. We will also see the film Texas Forever. Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto! Texas Forever! Tells the story of Texas, in the only way it should be told -- BIG! The base of the monument houses the San Jacinto Museum of History --- your gateway to Texas culture. San Jacinto Museum of History Association has occupied the facility since its doors first opened. From Mayan idols to Mexican manuscripts to Sam Houston’s private dictionary – the museum has over 30,000 artifacts and displays them in both permanent exhibit and rotating special exhibits. We will also experience a Spectacular Panoramic View from the top of the San Jacinto Monument overlooking the Houston Ship

Channel and the Battleship Texas. Access an archive of footage from the past24 hours and a “Hall of Fame” collection of the most spectacular user-submitted views. We will be having lunch at the Monument Inn. To cost of this trip is $12.50 plus the cost of your meal at the Monument Inn. Our Annual Gift Exchange Rules & Procedures:For the annual gift exchange pot luck, everyone brings a gift

(around $15.00). Ladies bring a woman’s gift and the men bring a man’s gift. Then after our meal, everyone will receive a number. The first person whose number is called will select a gift from their gender’s gifts. They then open the gift and show it to everyone. When the next number is called, that person has a choice to either select a gift from their unopened gender gifts or take one from someone. Note: A gift can only be only taken twice. If the gift you had previously selected is taken, you will then have a choice, to either select a new gift or take one from someone else. This continues until everyone has a gift. It’s really an exciting and enjoyable evening.

Tuesday, December 16: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our December, 14 weekly e-newsletter.

Thursday, December 25: Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House. This month’s game has been cancelled. Merry Christmas!

As autumn brings cooler temperatures, it also signals the arrival of another seasonal display - falling leaves! While Take Care of Texas encourages you to plant shade trees to help lower your utility bills in the summer, these deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall. Instead of raking and bagging them, where they will head to a landfill, put them back into your lawns and gardens as a valuable source of mulch and fertilizer. Leaves contain 50 to 80 percent of the nutrients a plant extracts from the soil and air during the season. Grass clippings, leaves, and other yard debris make up 20 percent of the trash sent to landfills each year. It costs Texans over $250 million a year to collect and dispose of this waste. There are four basic ways to manage leaves and use them in landscaping:

Mowing: a light covering of leaves can be mowed, simply leaving the shredded leaves in place on the lawn. This technique is most effective when a mulching mower is used.

Mulching: a lawn mower with a bagging attachment provides a fast

A two to three inch mulch of shredded leaves is ideal for flowerbeds. Soil improvement: leaves may be collected and worked directly into garden and flowerbed soils. A six to eight inch layer of leaves tilled into a heavy, clay soil will improve aeration and drainage. The same amount tilled into a light, sandy soil, will improve water and nutrient holding capacity.

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the fifth year December 11 through 13, 2014. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center. This year’s tournament is underwritten by North Cypress Medical Center Hospital.

“Teams from the Dallas area and the San Antonio area will be traveling to Houston for the event,” said Teresa Hull, event co-chair. “This is so exciting because it means that word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament. This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow,” she said.

New this year will be family fun activities including face painting, balloon animals and much more. Northwest Dodge will once again be sponsoring a chance to win a car during the championship game on December 13, 2014 at the Berry Center.

The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in Cy-Fair ISD, wanted a way to showcase the talent and facilities in Cy-Fair ISD and the tournament grew from there.

In a nail bitter championship game between Galena Park North Shore and Plano West last year, North Shore pulled ahead and won the tournament. “These games are so fun to watch,” said Teresa. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable (just $2.00 for students and $3.00 for adults or a family fun pass for $8). We want a lot seats in the seats!” she said.

Last year the tournament raised $18,750.02. All proceeds raised through entry fees, t-shirt sales, game tickets and sponsorships will be used for innovative staff development programs for district teachers and instructional leaders and for scholarships for deserving high school seniors. The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club will celebrate its 28th Anniversary Season by hosting its annual free Registration/Orientation breakfast on Saturday, February 7th, 2015, for all boys and girls who are interested in joining for the 2015 track season. The breakfast starts promptly at 8:30 AM at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center Forum located at 6823 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX, 77379.

The free breakfast is the opportunity for youth athletes to register for the 2015 spring/summer track season, and to meet the Northwest Flyers coaches, staff, and other new and returning athletes. The event will be highlighted by a special presentation from a member of the USA Track & Field Olympic organization (USATF). All athletes and parents who wish to join the Northwest Flyers must attend the orientation.

The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a youth (ages 6 -18) track club, affiliated with USA Track & Field (USATF), that provides a full program

of sanctioned "track" events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays, and sanctioned "field" events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin. The Northwest Flyers has approximately 285 members. The club was founded 28 years ago by Olympic gold medalist Fred Newhouse to foster the development of youth track & field in the Northwest Houston area.

The Northwest Flyers is a member of the "Win with Integrity" program, a partnership between USATF and the American College of Sports Medicine. "Win with Integrity" brings elite track & field athletes and school-aged kids together to promote healthy lifestyles, keeping active, and living with integrity through the sport of track & field.

FAIRFIELD VILLAGE SOUTH NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONThe Board of Directors for Fairfield Village South Neighborhood Association has amended the

Architectural Review Control Guidelines concerning the number of trees for each lot. Trees: Each Lot is required to at all times have two (2) hardwood trees in the front yard of the

Lot (i.e. between the front elevation of the dwelling and the sidewalk). The minimum size (caliper, height and spread) of a hardwood tree is set forth in the Fairfield Control Guidelines. A tree on a Lot may not be removed without prior ARC approval unless the tree is dead of significantly diseased or removed is necessary for the construction of an Improvement on a Lot approved by the ARC, provided that the intent to remove the tree was disclosed in the application submitted to and approved by the ARC. When a tree is removed, the Owner must also remove the stump, fill the resulting hole with dirt, and cover the area with sod. All species of palm trees other than a sago palm are prohibited in the front yard of a Lot or portion of a side yard of a Lot visible from either the street in front of the Lot or, in the case of a corner Lot, the side street. A tree on a Lot shall not obstruct or impair visibility of a stop sign or other traffic sign from a motor vehicle operated on a street in the Subdivision; in the event of the obstruction or impairment of visibility of a traffic sign, as determined by the ARC, the Owner of the Lot on which the tree is located shall be obligated to trim or prune the tree or, if determined by the ARC to be necessary, remove the tree. The ARC Guidelines were amended in an effort to protect sidewalks and streets from damage caused by tree roots. Therefore, Street Trees are no longer required for Fairfield Village South Neighborhood Association. An ARC application must be submitted for approval to remove the street trees.

a theatrical company. We are under the artistic leadership of Cheryl Bradford (department head), Jane Bankston, and Charles Page. Over the past 5 years, our students have performed to sold-out audiences for musical productions including Hairspray, Anything Goes, Legally Blonde, and Shrek the Musical. We anticipate the same with this year’s production of The Addams Family. In addition to mainstage musicals, UIL competition, Fresh Faces, Comedy Sportz and various other workshops and performances throughout the year, our students annually attend our state’s Thespian festival. This past year, Shrek the Musical received 6 Tommy Tune Nominations. 28 students advanced to the National level and 8 of our students brought home 1st place honors.

CFISD Fine Arts programs do not receive financial support from our school district. Up to this point, our operating budget has been raised through patron attendance and various small-scale fundraisers. On February 6, 2015, the Cy-Ranch High School Supporting Theatre at Ranch (S.T.A.R.) Booster Club will host our second annual Mardi Gras Magic Auction & Gala Fundraiser. This large fundraiser will allow us to go above and beyond our basic operating expenses to help to ensure that we will continue to provide quality opportunities for our students.

The generous support of businesses in our community plays a key role in the success of our program. Donations of merchandise and gift certificates are needed for our Silent and Live Auctions, as well as cash underwriting. Funds raised through Mardi Gras Magic 2015 will be used to help offset the expenses needed to send students to competitions, provide much needed technical equipment upgrades for our theatre and classrooms, and allow us to bring in guest teachers for the continued growth of our program. The women of Northwest Houston Business & Professional Women (BPW) are sponsoring a "Neighbors in Need" campaign in December to collect toys for infants through age 12. BPW is partnering with a renowned Houston non-profit organization, Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM), to spread some Christmas cheer to children in need. The monthly luncheon will feature speaker, Carole Little, a dedicated leader with more than 30 years' experience in health and human services. Since 2001, she has served as President & CEO of Northwest Assistance Ministries. This meeting will celebrate the completion of the ‘debt free’ home built for a well deserving wounded warrior and his family in Cypress, TX. RE/MAX Realty Center partnered with the Texas Sentinels Foundation to make this a reality for a local veteran and his family. With the completion of this home near Christmas the family is in need of many items to make this new start. Needed items are listed on the Cyfen.org website. Donations will be collected a the December luncheon. In addition, there will be a member gift exchange. Bring a wrapped new gift or gift card valued at $25 to participate. All are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of CYFEN at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd.

This month’s meeting begins with networking at 11 a.m. followed with a prompt 11:30 a.m. start of the program. Bring plenty of business cards for networking. The meeting cost is $25 with advanced

reservations made by the Thursday prior to the meeting and $30 at the door.

SHALOM Shalom Cypress was established in 2011 by local families seeking a Jewish presence

in Northwest Houston. We are the closest synagogue within 25 miles of the nearest synagogue. Many thought that they were the only Jews in the Cypress area, but it turns out that they were wrong! Shalom Cypress has grown to more than 30 affiliated families.

Shalom Cypress Hebrew School is now open for enrollment for the Fall & Spring 2014/2015 year. This upcoming year Morah Alana is going to concentrate on conversational Hebrew with the children. The 1st day of Hebrew School was August 28th, but it is not too late to register for the class!
