Residents are invited to attend a meeting of the Board of Directors of Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 354 on October 20, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bradford Creek Clubhouse, 16011 Fairfield Green Circle, Cypress, Texas 77429. The Board will hear public comments, as well as conduct regular business. For further information about the District, please call 713/651-5581.

Like most of you, the scouts of Cub Scout Pack 533 are wrapping up what has been another fun and event-filled summer. For many of the scouts, the start of their summer was spent attending Big Cypress District’s week-long day camp, where they had the opportunity to experience a variety fun-filled activities.  They played sports, did archery, worked on science experiments, and built woodworking projects that they will be able to use during the upcoming scout year. The pack plans summer activities in an effort to plan a year-round scouting program and to help scouts earn the Summertime Activity Award. As a pack, we always try to have outings that are fun, and where possible, help them work on either an elective or achievement.  This year’s outings took us to Horseshoe Junction in Brenham where the scouts and families had the opportunity to race each other in go-carts, soak each other on the bumper boats, and play in an arcade packed with games for all ages.  Several of the boys and their families participated in the Fairfield Annual 4th of July parade along with members from other neighborhood packs and troops.  The scouts’ journey continued with trips to the bowling alley and the Aerodrome where they got to work on earning belt loops for bowling and ice skating. Our summer activities came to a close with a pizza/swim party at the Bradford Creek pool where the scouts were urged to bring a friend that they thought might be interested in scouting.

As in past years, the pack has been able to pay for the scouts to attend these fantastic events.  We hope to continue this in the future through our fundraising efforts.  Be on the lookout for our friendly scouts selling popcorn this fall.  At Pack 533, we are always looking for new members and will be holding our annual rally night recruitment on Thursday September 4th beginning at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria at Keith Elementary.  If you have a son in 1st – 5th grades and are looking for a program that helps teach skills, values, and teamwork, then please plan on attending our rally night to learn more. In case you were wondering, you do not have to attend Keith to be a member of Pack 533. Our pack has an open door policy, and we welcome anyone from Fairfield or the surrounding area that is interested in scouting to come join us on our adventure. Look for us on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/pack533keithelementary or at http://Pack533Cypress.ScoutLander.com.

SAVE THE DATE to Save Raelyn!

As of July 17, 2014, We received the devastating news that Raelyn Cutbirth’s(a 4 year old cancer fighter) rhabdomyosarcoma tumor is growing and it is now protruding inside Raelyn’s mouth, through the skin. They have stopped chemo because it is not working. Raelyn’s doctor’s have decided to give her 3 1/2 weeks of radiation, strictly for palliative care. Please pray for a miracle!

To help Raelyn’s family cover medical expenses, we are holding a benefit at Cypress Saloon on September 14 to raise money via live and silent auction items, as well as BBQ, beer, and baked goods. All proceeds from this event will go to Jenni and David, Raelyn’s parents, to help cover medical expenses.

Please come out and show your support for our hometown hero!

The “Take Care of Texas” Guide to Yard CareManaging Common Texas Yard Pests

Gardening and yard care can give you satisfying results and beautiful landscapes. However, yard pests can be discouraging, even for the most committed gardener. Here are some quick tips to avoid pests:• Irrigate efficiently; water infrequently but thoroughly, generally

1 inch once a week in the morning.• Use native and adapted plants, which are better suited to the

local environment and are more resistant to pests.• Mow properly taking off no more than l/3 of the grass blade

with each mowing.• Choose natural or organic fertilizers, avoid overusing fertilizers,

and encourage natural predators such as worms, ladybugs, certain beetles, mites, and birds.

Sports Section

As another fall sports season approaches, a major goal of the coaches, trainers, and parents is keeping the athletes healthy and contributing to their respective sports. However, injury is inevitable and part of the game. Pediatric athletes present with a variety of injuries, the most common being the overuse type like Osgood-Schlatter disease and stress fractures. These injuries occur due to excessive stress placed on bone, muscle and tendon tissue that are constantly growing and not always at the same rate. Risk factors for these injuries include asymmetry in joint flexibility/mobility and muscle strength, impaired balance, training and recovery errors, and previous injury. There is potential for many overuse injuries to be prevented by knowing and following a few simple principles.

Pre-participation physical exams can be helpful for identifying many of the risk factors mentioned previously. It is recommended that these exams should include at minimum an assessment of joint mobility and flexibility and muscle strength and flexibility, as well as a thorough review of the past medical history to determine if the student is even appropriate for athletics. Recently, functional screening tools have been developed to reveal asymmetries and imbalances during basic movement patterns that are the foundation for many of the movements required during sport.

Training and conditioning play a major role in injury prevention as well. The term “cultural deconditioning” has been coined recently to describe the decrease in physical activity in our youth that has coincided with an increase in video game and computer use. So when the offseason ends

and it’s time to get out and enjoy the 105 degree Texas heat, the body is not ready to stand up to the stresses suddenly placed on the body. A way to combat this is to promote an active, healthy lifestyle by putting down the Xbox controller and spending more time outside, taking part in offseason conditioning camps, or participating in local fitness classes.

A guideline known as the “10% rule” has also been developed to allow student athletes to transition back into sports activities. The idea is that the amount of training time, distance, repetitions, or load should not be increased by greater than 10% per week. For example, if a student is running 10 miles per week, they should not run more than 11 miles in the following week.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of overuse injuries is paramount. They are all too often written off as “growing pains” and are allowed to increase in severity, resulting in extensive time away from sport during the recovery process. Common signs and symptoms include pain that is persistent in nature, takes longer than usual to resolve, visible swelling, tenderness that can be localized to one area, and/or require interruption of normal athletic activities.

Finally, having an open-line of communication between the coaches, trainers, other health care professionals, parents, and athletes is imperative in injury prevention. Lack of or inconsistencies in the transfer of information between any of these parties can result in delayed access to proper prevention or treatment techniques and keep the athlete from performing at the highest possible level.

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the fifth year December 11 through 13, 2014. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center.  This year’s tournament is underwritten by North Cypress Medical Center Hospital.

“Teams from the Dallas area and the San Antonio area will be traveling to Houston for the event,” said Teresa Hull, event co-chair. “This is so exciting because it means that word has gotten out about the high level of organization and quality of our tournament. This will help us continue to build state recognition and gives us great potential to grow,” she said.

New this year will be family fun activities including face painting, balloon animals and much more.  Northwest Dodge will once again be sponsoring a chance to win a car during the championship game on December 13, 2014 at the Berry Center.

The tournament was started by community member Eric Burg and modeled after an extremely successful tournament held in Pasadena. Burg, who played basketball in Cy-Fair ISD, wanted a way to showcase the talent and facilities in Cy-Fair ISD and the tournament grew from there.

In a nail bitter championship game between Galena Park North Shore and Plano West last year, North Shore pulled ahead and won the tournament. “These games are so fun to watch,” said Teresa. “We are hoping to attract many spectators to cheer for the kids since ticket prices are so reasonable (just $2.00 for students and $3.00 for adults or a family fun pass for $8). We want a lot seats in the seats!” she said.

Last year the tournament raised $18,750.02. It’s almost time to applaud Cy-Fair’s educators at the 17th Annual Salute to the Stars Gala. The black-tie, celebratory event to be held on October 16, 2014, at Cy-Fair ISD’s Richard E. Berry Center will honor 86 Spotlight teachers, one from each of the district’s campuses. Dinner, entertainment, live auction and a raffle will be featured as community and business leaders and elected and school officials give thanks to those who give so much to the students in the Cy-Fair district.

Each year in April, Cy-Fair ISD recognizes one teacher from each of its campuses who represents a unique balance of skill, art and heart in teaching students in his or her subject area or program. “Spotlight teachers and their guest as well as the principal and his or her guest occupy spots at the school’s table,” said Lauri Baker, event co-chair. “The remaining four seats are for those who sponsor the table. Table sponsorships start at $1,250; however, there are other sponsor opportunities available as well.”

Not only is the event a celebration of the district’s top-notch teachers, but it’s also a way to showcase the talent of students. “Students will perform a drum line performance, those who have won scholarships from the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation will serve as guest speakers and culinary arts students will serve dinner to guests,” said Baker. “Involving our students in the event is a perfect way to remember why we are all here.”

All proceeds raised at the event go to the Cy-Fair Educational

Foundation which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. Last year the event raised over $152,000 for staff development grants and student scholarships, bringing the grand total to over $1.8 million raised since 1998.

This year’s underwriter will be Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital.  Also sponsoring in 2014 will be the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union as the Red Carpet Premiere Sponsor, Bay- IBI Group Architects as the  Superintendent Table Sponsor and Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital as the Teacher Appreciation Sponsor.

Baker, who has been involved with organizing the event for ten years, has worked in the school district for 30 years and also serves on the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation Board. “I love working with such a passionate group of dedicated people who put on this great event,” she said. “It’s really a fun night and people are excited to see each other but also so committed to raise money for the Foundation. The community relationship in our district and the compassion of the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, that does so much for both students and teachers, is unique and rewarding to be a part of,” she said.

Houston Methodist West Hospital’s Positively PinkHouston Methodist West Hospital’s second annual Positively Pink is

scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2014, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The free, family-fun event is open to all members of the community.

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, and a cancer diagnosis brings not only a health risk but often a financial burden as well. Positively Pink will increase awareness and provide education on breast cancer and raise funds to benefit local cancer patients with non-medical assistance where needed.

“We believe in this cause and are very excited about the information we’ll be sharing at this year’s Positively Pink,” said Dr. Correna Terrell, radiologist and medical director of Houston Methodist’s breast care center. “Improving the health of our community begins with education about reducing risk and discussing, at a personal level with women, why screening mammograms are important. We also want to inform our community about the comprehensive cancer resources, from prevention and screening to treatment and support, available here on campus.” Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with the hospital’s breast cancer physician team and other primary care physicians dedicated to women’s health and sign up for their annual mammogram.

Last year, more than 400 community members attended and raised

nearly $20,000 to establish Houston Methodist West’s fund that provides much-needed assistance to West Houston and Katy residents affected by cancer. This year, many local venders and sponsors have already signed up and event organizers are hoping for an even more successful event to maximize the amount of aid that can be given.

“It is great to see our community rally around such a great cause,” said Kim Collins, director of cancer and breast care centers at Houston Methodist West. “We want taking action for your health and others to be engaging and Positively Pink will have something for everyone— live music by Steve Hawkins and the Shockwave Band, food and shopping, complementary health screenings and activities for kids—moonwalk, face painting, crafts and balloon artists.” A silent auction will also be held, featuring items donated by local businesses including Clear Dermatology, Memorial Athletic Club, the Brookwood Community, Women’s Health Boutique, Spaceman Closet, James Avery, the Houstonian Hotel & Spa and many others. For those interested in taking a little bit of pink home, pink flamingos will also be up for adoption.

For more information on Houston Methodist West’s breast health program, Positively Pink 2014, or donating to the patient support fund, contact the Breast Care Center, at 832.522.1032.

Our GoalThe goal of this event is to raise money for the HOPE Project

in Kigali, Rwanda.  The HOPE Project is led by Ten Talents International, and stands for Housing, Opportunity, Purpose, and Education.  Orphaned boys and girls in Kigali, Rwanda are in need of a safe home where they can have the opportunity to go to school, receive medical care, and have basic needs met.  Property has already been purchased and work has begun to build a girls’ home and boys’ home to give these children a safe place to live and learn.  This project will be completed in three phases and this year we are supporting Phase 1.

One Community, One PurposeWe invite area churches and

orphan/adoption ministries to join with us as we share with our community opportunities to get involved with caring for the orphan.  Join us race day as a runner, volunteer, and/or share your Orphan Care ministry booth on campus.  For more info please visit: runningforgreaterthings.com
