Game 8 2 Fairfield vs. Penn State

Head Coach Andy Copelan10th Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2018 season is Andy Copelan’s 10th at the helm of the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted an 80-63 (.559) record with the Stags and owns an overall NCAA Division I head coaching record of 98-78 (.557).

Copelan was named the program’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan’s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-rank foe in eight of his nine campaigns with the Stags.

Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game.

Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015. In three seasons with CAA Lacrosse, the Stags have collected 20 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox ’18 and 2016 Rookie and co-Player of the Year nods for Colin Burke ’19.

Fairfield student-athletes also continue to gain the national and regional spotlight. Burke and TJ Neubauer ’16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions in 2016 with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season.

Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Neubauer was the highest-drafted Stag since Greg Downing ’07 was tabbed as the sixth overall pick and only First Round selection in program history in 2007. Neubauer was the 10th Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks.

The 2014 edition of the club boasted a final record of 12-4, tying the program’s single-season wins mark. The campaign began with a record-setting 7-0 start and included the team’s first-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game.

Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ first-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags had 39 student-athletes earn All-ECAC Academic Team honors under Copelan’s tutelage, including a program-high 10 honorees in 2014. In 2015, Max Buchanan ’15 and Tristan Sperry ’15 collected USILA Scholar All-America distinctions following their senior campaigns.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in 2006. Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth.

Scouting Penn StateThe Penn State Nittany Lions come to Rafferty Stadium with a record of

4-3 following last Saturday’s 9-7 loss to Cornell. Penn State has also lost to fellow Keystone State squads Villanova and Robert Morris while boasting wins over Hobart, Stony Brook, Penn and Furman. The Nittany Lions went 12-4 last season, concluding the spring with a loss to Towson in the NCAA Championship First Round.

Penn State is led on the attack by the duo of Kevin Hill and 2017 All-America Honorable Mention Mac O’Keefe with 16 and 15 goals, respectively. Nick Spillane is the team’s leading point scorer with nine goals and a team-best 13 assists.

Colby Kneese has played the majority of the minutes in the cage, posting a .549 save percentage and 9.01 goals-against average in just under 400 minutes of work to date. The effort in front of him is headed by 2017 Second Team All-Big Ten and All-America Honorable Mention defenseman Chris Sabia, who has posted 12 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers while also contributing four goals on the offensive end.

The faceoff X is manned by 2017 All-America Honorable Mention Gerard Arceri, who ranks fourth in the nation with a .704 win percentage (119-for-169). Arceri has also scooped up a team-leading 87 ground balls to slot second in the nation with 12.43 pick-ups per game.

All-Time Series vs. Penn State (Penn State leads 7-3)A 9-8 win for #2 Penn State last St. Patrick’s Day moved the Nittany Lions

to 7-3 all-time against the Stags. That meeting one year ago in State College renewed a series that was previously played annually from 2001-09. The Stags and Nittany Lions were conference foes in the ECAC from 2006-09.

Game 8 4 Fairfield vs. Penn State

Up-Up, Down-DownFairfield’s special teams rank among the best in the

nation in 2018. The man-up unit currently leads the CAA and ranks 10th with .524 success rate (11-for-21), bolstered by a 5-for-5 performance on the EMO on March 3 against Stony Brook.

The team’s perfect performance on the EMO is the only unblemished, single-game showing of at least five chances in the nation this season. Five man-up goals also marks the most by a Fairfield team in a game since netting six (on eight opportunities) in a win over Manhattan on Feb. 22, 2014.

Of the nine teams with a better EMO success rate than the Stags, only North Carolina (28) and Sacred Heart (26) have done so while earning more man-up chances than Fairfield’s 21.

Individually, Jack Brennan shares the CAA lead with four man-up goals this spring. Only five players in the nation have netted five or more goals on the EMO, led by nine man-up markers from William Perry of North Carolina. Taylor Strough (3), Joe Rodrigues (2) and McKay Sheahan (2) have also all scored multiple man-up goals for the Stags.

The Stags’ man-down unit has also done its part, ranking second in the CAA and 14th in the nation with a .778 success rate (four goals allowed in 18 man-down situations). In addition to his efforts keeping opponents off the board in these situations, LSM Spencer Noonan also scored a man-down goal in the season opener vs. Vermont.

The 2011 Stags had the best showings in both areas during Andy Copelan’s tenure. That team finished at .481 on the EMO (25-for-52) and at .758 playing man-down (opponents 15-for-62).

‘X’ Marks the SpotWill Fox currently ranks 14th in the nation and third in

the CAA with a .614 win percentage (86-for-140) on the Stags’ primary faceoff man. His 7.71 ground balls per game currently slot him second in the CAA and nine in all of Division I.

Fox’s .810 win percentage (17-for-21) in the Feb. 17 win at Saint Joseph’s was the best by a Stags’ faceoff man (minimum 20 attempts) since Michael Roe had a 20-for-23 (.870) day against Vermont in 2012.

With 14 ground balls picked up against Saint Joseph’s, Fox matched the known program record set in a win over Holy Cross in 2002 by Fairfield and Major League Lacrosse faceoff standard bearer Peter Vlahakis ’04.

For his career, Fox ranks second behind Vlahakis (.627) with a .568 win percentage (435-for-766). He is also second all-time behind Vlahakis’ 620 total wins. With 196 career ground balls, Fox is third all-time at Fairfield behind fellow faceoff men Vlahakis (290) and Roe (200).

Senior CLASS AwardFox has been recognized as one of 20 candidates

nationwide for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor focused on the total student-athlete and encouraging students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Along with his prowess on the lacrosse field, Fox is a Dean’s List and CAA Honor Roll student as a Psychology major. He is one of Fairfield’s representatives on the MAAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Climbing the ChartsIn the midst of his junior campaign, Colin Burke has

risen to 10th in Fairfield history with 76 career goals. Burke most recently scored a goal and dished out two assists on Saturday against Yale to move into sole possession of 12th all-time with 117 career points.

This season, Burke has scored four goals with a team-leading nine assists. He shares second on the team in points (13) with Dylan Beckwith (5g, 8a) behind Joe Rodrigues’ team-high 13 goals with two assists to accumulate 15 total points.

When Burke eclipsed the 100-point mark with six points in Fairfield’s 2017 season-ending win over Delaware - his 31st career game - he became the fourth fastest to attain the milestone in program history.

Fairfield vs. Ranked OpponentsLast Saturday’s loss to #10/11 Yale was Fairfield’s

second meeting this spring with a nationally-ranked opponent. The Stags previously fell to #13/15 Rutgers on Feb. 24. Vermont was unranked for its visit to Rafferty Stadium but has since risen to #12/14 in the national polls.

Following last April’s win over #15 Towson, Fairfield has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in the USILA Coaches’ Poll) in eight of Andy Copelan’s nine prior seasons at the helm of the Stags. The 2017 Tigers were also the third team defeated by Copelan’s Stags in a season in which they reached the Final Four (Notre Dame in 2010, Denver in 2013).

Not Settled in SixtyFairfield’s 11-10 double-overtime loss at #15 Yale in

2017 was the Stags most recent contest to go beyond regulation. At 66:46 of game time, the clash at Yale was the Stags’ longest outing since a triple-overtime win (69:53) at Hofstra on Feb. 28, 2012.

The longest game in Fairfield Lacrosse history is a 7-6 triple-overtime loss at #14 Rutgers that clocked in at 71:48 on April 1, 2004.

The Rookie RundownThe Fairfield roster includes 13 newcomers, seven of

whom have made their Fairfield debuts in 2018: Curran, Strough, Labetti, Tymon, McAuliffe, Elmquist and Friedt.

The baker’s dozen of new student-athletes represent every position on the field as well as nine different states. The newcomers that traveled the farthest to get to campus are Max McGuire from Del Mar, California and Lucas Pedersen from Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Also of note, freshman Zane Friedt is the first-ever NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse player to hail from the state of Idaho.

Stag WatchingThe Stags Sports Network on Facebook Live is the

flagship broadcast entity for Fairfield Lacrosse this season. A total of 15 men’s and women’s lacrosse home games from Rafferty Stadium are on the slate to stream for free at Facebook.com/FairfieldUAthletics.

The Fairfield men’s home games against Penn State on March 17 and UMass on April 21 have been tabbed by the Lax Sports Network as the CAA Game of the Week.

Up NextThe Stags conclude their six-game residency at Rafferty

Stadium on Tuesday, March 20 with a 3 p.m. visit from NJIT.

Game 8 8 Fairfield vs. Penn State

Stags Stopped by Vermont in 2018 Season OpenerRodrigues nets two goals to lead the Fairfield attack

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse opened the 2018 campaign this afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium, dropping a 12-5 decision to visiting Vermont. Joe Rodrigues netted two goals to pace five Stags that registered points on the day.

Fairfield falls to 0-1 with the loss, and Vermont improves to 3-0 on the season after sweeping a southern road trip last weekend at Furman and Mercer.

Joining Rodrigues in the scoring column were Travis Ford, Drew Murray and Spencer Noonan with one goal apiece, while Dylan Beckwith handed out an assist.

The visiting Catamounts came out firing at Rafferty Stadium, netting the contest’s first eight goals. Noonan ended the drought for the Stags with his first career goal. The senior defenseman corralled a ground ball off of a faceoff and went coast-to-coast for the marker less than two minutes before the half. The tally was also Fairfield’s first man-down goal since Colin McLinden converted while the Stags were shorthanded in a win at UMass on April 4, 2015.

After a quick Vermont tally to start the third quarter, Fairfield put together back-to-back goals for the first time, starting with Murray finishing a pass from Beckwith to cut the deficit to 9-2. Less than 70 seconds later, the Stags struck again as Rodrigues – a Second Team All-CAA selection last spring – rattled the cage for the first time to make it a 9-3 contest with 12:15 remaining in the third.

Neither team would score until the final stanza, when Vermont converted off of the opening draw to extend the margin back to 10-3. Once again, it was Rodrigues who offered the rebuttal as he withstood a push from behind to finish off his second goal of the day. However, the Catamounts responded with back-to-back markers to thwart the potential for a Fairfield run.

In the closing minutes of action, Ford – who hit the post and the crossbar on consecutive shots earlier in the game – found the back of the cage for the first time in 2018 to round out the final score at 12-5.

Will Fox handled the duties at the faceoff ‘X’, starting his senior campaign with a 14-for-21 showing with a team-leading seven groundballs. Beckwith and Adam Riestis each added three ground balls in the midfield.

Sean McKee and Sam Gindhart split the effort in the cage for the Stags, both making their collegiate debut today on Conway Field. McKee made three saves in the opening half of action and Gindhart turned away six shots after the intermission.

Vermont was led by three goals and two assists from All-America attackman Ian MacKay, who was the 2016 America East Offensive Player of the Year but missed all of 2017 due to injury. Ben French also netted a hat trick for the Catamounts. Nick Washuta made 13 saves over the first 54:33 of action to earn the win in goal, with Ryan Cornell stopping three shots to close out the day in relief.

The Stags now begin a two-game road swing next Saturday, Feb. 17, with a noon visit to Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia. After a trip to Rutgers the following Saturday, the Stags start a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 27 against in-state foe Hartford.

In addition to his first career goal, Fox was dominant at the faceoff X to keep the Fairfield offense on the field. The goals for Brennan and Strough this afternoon were man-up as the Stags went 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities. Burke assisted on both man-advantage tallies.

Defensively, Fairfield held the host Hawks to their lowest scoring output in 12 games dating back to last season. The Stags forced 14 Saint Joseph’s turnovers with seven different players recording a caused turnover, and held the Hawks to a 1-for-5 day on extra-man chances. Sean McKee earned his first career win in goal with 12 saves to go along with two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Mike Rastivo and Kyle Cain each potted two goals for the Hawks. Cain also distributed an assist, while Chris Blewitt had a pair of helpers. Mike Adler made 10 stops in the cage for Saint Joseph’s.

The Stags are back at it next Saturday, Feb. 24, for a noon faceoff at #7 Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights took their first loss of 2018 this afternoon, falling by a count of 9-7 at #12 Army West Point.

Action returns to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 27 when the Stags host in-state foe Hartford at 3 p.m. The Hawks lost their season opener today – a 14-12 setback at St. John’s – and will host Bryant next weekend before visiting Fairfield.

Tuesday Matinee at Rafferty Stadium Goes to Hartford, 16-11Dylan Beckwith posts career highs with four goals, six total points

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A seven-goal third quarter outburst for visiting Hartford proved decisive as Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse was on the short side of a 16-11 decision on Tuesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Beckwith, who set new career highs in both goals and total points, was one of three players with at least three goals for Fairfield (1-3). Joe Rodrigues netted three markers to extend his team lead to nine goals on the season, while Charlie Curran rang up the first hat trick of his career. Beckwith and Rodrigues now share the team lead with 11 points apiece.

Also rattling the cage today was Brendan Quinn, who also dished out a pair of assists. Colin Burke, Travis Ford and Taylor Strough round out the attack with one assist apiece.

The matchup at the faceoff X featured Will Fox squaring off with Hartford All-American Dylan Protesto. Fox went 11-for-18 against Protesto, who entered the day ranked third in the nation in win percentage on the draw, and finished at 18-for-31 overall with a team-best 11 ground balls.

Fox’s performance led the Stags to a 37-27 overall lead in ground balls. Samuel Murphy and Spencer Noonan each had three pick-ups in the midfield, and Curran scooped up three to keep possession alive in the attacking end.

Sean McKee started in goal and made 11 saves in addition to three ground balls and a caused turnover. Sam Gindhart completed the day in the cage with a pair of second-half saves.

Hartford’s (1-2) Alex Smith led all players with five goals, while Justin Huggins potted four for the Hawks. Ryan Vanderford earned the win in goal with 10 saves.

The Stags held a 52-29 lead in shots – Fairfield’s most since sending 55 attempts at Providence on Feb. 21, 2004 – and committed 12 turnovers to Hartford’s 13 giveaways. Fairfield was 12-for-13 on the clear, while the Hawks posted a 15-for-19 mark on clearing attempts.

Today’s game was the first of a six-game homestand for the Stags. The Stags continue their Rafferty Stadium residency on Saturday, March 3 for a 1 p.m. visit from Stony Brook. Tickets are on sale at FairfieldStags.com/TIX.

Rally Runs Out for Stags in 11-9 Loss to Stony BrookFairfield finishes the day on a 5-0 run

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse scored the last five goals of the day, but it would not be enough to overcome visiting Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon as the Seawolves left Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium with an 11-9 decision. Jack Brennan, Charlie Horning and Joe Rodrigues each scored two goals for the Stags on the day.

Brennan added an assist to his two-goal day to ring up a career-best three points. Both of his markers came in man-up situations as Fairfield (1-4) went 5-for-5 on extra-man opportunities. The performance on the EMO is the first perfect showing of at least five chances in the nation this season. Five man-up goals marks the most by a Fairfield team in a game since netting six in a win over Manhattan on Feb. 22, 2014.

Rodrigues’ two goals, which came just 25 seconds apart near the end of the third quarter, extend his team-leading totals to 11 goals and 13 points this spring. He has scored at least one goal in 10 consecutive contests dating back to 2017 – a run that includes eight multi-goal efforts.

Horning’s two goals also both came in the second half as the senior put home his first two markers of the year. Rounding out the attack were Drew Murray, Taylor Strough and McKay Sheahan with one goal apiece. Sheahan’s goal was the first of his collegiate career.

Colin Burke dished out three assists to move into a tie for 12th all-time (with Rob Scipioni ‘02) with 113 career points. Murray also handed out a pair of helpers for the first two-assist day of his career. Brennan, Strough, Dylan Beckwith and Liam DaRos each had one assist on the day.

At the faceoff X, Will Fox went 12-for-19 with eight ground balls to register his sixth consecutive game at 50 percent or better on the draw. Joe De Lasho added one faceoff victory, and Samuel Murphy aided efforts in the midfield with two ground balls.

Sean McKee helmed the cage and made 11 saves to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. J.B. Smith and Andrew Murrow picked up three and two ground balls, respectively, on close defense and Spencer Noonan collected a ground ball and caused three turnovers from the starting LSM spot.

Stony Brook (1-4) was led on the attack by Patrick Kaschalk with three goals and two assists. Michael Bollinger earned the win in goal for the Seawolves with 13 saves.

The Stags outshot Stony Brook, 33-26, and the visitors held the edge in ground balls, 40-38. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

The Seawolves got off to a fast start with four consecutive goals before Sheahan’s first goal as a Stag – and Fairfield’s first man-up goal of the day – cut the margin to 4-1 late in the first quarter. Stony Brook would add five more in the second frame, however, with man-up goals by Brennan and Strough pushing the halftime score to 9-3 in favor of the Seawolves.

Fairfield got on the board first after the intermission as Horning finished a Beckwith feed just 61 seconds into the third stanza. After nine scoreless minutes of action, Stony Brook struck with two goals in just seven ticks as Kaschalk scored and Tyler Anderson won the ensuing faceoff, carrying it coast-to-coast and rattling the cage for a goal. Fairfield responded in kind as Joe Rodrigues scored with the flag down with 1:15 left in the frame. The Stags took advantage one again of the extra-man opportunity as Fox won the faceoff and Murray found Rodrigues 25 seconds later for another goal as the third quarter expired with Fairfield trailing 11-6.

All three tallies in the fourth quarter went to the Stags – courtesy of Horning, Brennan and Murray – as McKee made two stops and the defense forced five turnovers over the final 15 minutes. However, the deficit proved insurmountable as time expired on an 11-9 final.

“This team hasn’t had any quit in them since day one,” said Head Coach Andy Copelan. “But we all need to do a better job of transitioning what we do in practice and in film sessions to what we do on gameday.”

Up next, Fairfield hosts its second in-state foe of the spring when Quinnipiac comes to Rafferty Stadium on Tuesday, March 6 for a 3 p.m. contest.

Strong Start Propels Stags to 9-6 Win Over QuinnipiacFairfield nets the first six goals to top its in-state foe at Rafferty Stadium

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse scored the first six goals of the day against visiting Quinnipiac on Tuesday on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium and kept the Bobcats at arm’s length en route to a 9-6 victory. Jack Brennan racked up a career-best five points to pilot the attack. Fairfield (2-4) snaps a three-game losing skid with its first home victory of the year, while the Bobcats fall to 2-3.

“We certainly didn’t talk about today as a ‘must win’ game and we haven’t talked about being 1-4 going into the game all that much,” said Head Coach Andy Copelan. “In my heart of hearts, I expected us to be better than 1-4 after five games, but the analogy that we’ve used is that we can’t live in the rearview mirror right now. Everything has to be about the road ahead, and I was proud of the guys for having the ability to do that.”

Brennan netted a personal-best three goals and distributed two assists to account for his five points – all of which came in the first half as the Stags built the 8-1 lead that they would ride to victory. Joe Rodrigues added two goals to extend his team-leading total to 13 markers on the year, and the quartet of Liam DaRos, Taylor Strough, Brendan Quinn and Charlie Curran each scored one.

Also helping to facilitate the scoring were DaRos, Strough, Dylan Beckwith, Colin Burke and Charlie Horning with one assist apiece.

Will Fox played his part in keeping Fairfield on the attack with a 14-for-19 showing at the faceoff X. Fox, who entered the day ranked sixth in the nation with 9.00 ground balls per game, maintained that CAA-leading average with nine more ground balls this afternoon. Fox won the first seven draws of the game as Fairfield built its 6-0 lead and came away with 10-of-11 first-half faceoffs in total.

Jake Tymon also helped to control the action in the midfield with a career-best four ground balls and a caused turnover.

At the other end of Conway Field, Sean McKee had his best game in the cage as a Stag with 13 saves compared to just six goals allowed. McKee made seven of his stops in the fourth quarter to squash the Bobcats’ late comeback attempt and also swiped three ground balls.

“Sean is an uber-talented player, and there has been something there all year long,” Said Copelan of his first-year starting goalkeeper. “Part of it is game experience. He has to go through those transformative moments – both good and bad – and as long as he can grind through and keep his eyes on the finish line, it’s never going to be a talent shortage for Sean. I’m proud of how he has responded and how the guys around him have responded. They haven’t lost faith or confidence in him and, as a result, I think we’re seeing a more confident Sean McKee out there.”

Quinnipiac spread out its scoring with six different Bobcats accounting for the team’s six goals. Sam Witt had one of those markers as well as one assist to set the pace for the visitors. Joe Zukauskas played the majority of minutes in goal – save for a 2:16 stretch in which he was spelled for an injury timeout – and made 10 saves.

Brennan played a role in the Stags’ first four goals – netting two and assisting on two others – as Fairfield took control of the first half action. The Stags went on to score the contest’s first six markers while the defense kept Quinnipiac off the board for the first 23:25 of action. In total, Fairfield ran up an 8-1 advantage over the game’s first 30 minutes to take that sizable lead into the intermission.

Fairfield’s six-goal second quarter including a pair of man-up goals just 59 seconds apart. Those markers – finished by Brennan and Strough, respectively – ran the Stags’ streak to seven consecutive conversions on extra-man opportunities. Fairfield went 5-for-5 on the EMO in Saturday’s meeting with Stony Brook to post the first and only perfect game on the advantage (with a minimum of five chances) in the nation this spring.

Quinnipiac found more success on the attack in the second half, but the Stags kept those scoring chances spread out over the final 30 minutes of action to maintain their lead. The Bobcats never trimmed the deficit to less than three goals, and DaRos added his first goal of the season for the Stags in the fourth quarter to punctuate the 9-6 victory.

Quinnipiac outshot the Stags, 37-31, and the ground ball effort was even at 32-32. Fairfield committed 11 turnovers to the Bobcats’ 12 giveaways, and the Stags were a perfect 22-for-22 on the clear while the visitors converted 19 of their 22 clearing attempts.

The Stags are back in action on Saturday, March 10 for another in-state showdown as #10/11 Yale makes the trip to Rafferty Stadium for a 1 p.m. outing. The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season following an 11-8 victory at Bryant this past Saturday.

#10/11 Yale Pulls Away for 8-3 VictoryMcKee makes 10 saves, Burke totals three points for the Stags

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men’s Lacrosse carried a 2-2 tie into the half with visiting #10/11 Yale on Saturday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium. However, the nationally-ranked Bulldogs broke the deadlock with a 6-1 advantage after the intermission to exit Conway Field with an 8-3 decision. Sean McKee made 10 saves in the cage for the Stags.

With the loss, the Stags fall to 2-5 on the season. Yale improves to 4-1 with its fourth consecutive victory.

McKee’s 10 saves marked the fifth time that the first-year starting goalkeeper has reached double figures in seven outings. He also collected four ground balls with a caused turnover. The defensive effort in front of McKee was highlighted by three ground balls picked up by J.B. Smith and one caused turnover apiece for Nick Panara, Andrew Murrow, Jake Tymon and Spencer Noonan. Yale’s eight-goal output, which was boosted by an empty-net tally in the closing seconds, was its lowest of the season.

Colin Burke led the attack, playing a role in all three Fairfield scores with a goal and two assists. McKay Sheahan added a man-up marker for his second goal of the year and Jack Brennan posted his seventh tally of the spring.

Yale was led by a goal and three assists from Ben Reeves and five-point performance with three goals and two assists for Joseph Sessa. Jack Starr made 10 saves for the Bulldogs to earn the win in the cage. All-Ivy League faceoff man Conor Mackie went 15-for-15 on the dot with 11 ground balls to keep Yale on the attack.

Yale got on the board just seven seconds into the game as Mackie came away with the opening faceoff and started the Bulldogs on the run. The ball found the crosse of Jackson Morrill, who connected with Matt Gaudet for the game’s first goal.

After that initial outburst, the teams played scoreless lacrosse for nearly 14 minutes. The Stags ended that drought with Sheahan finishing a feed from Burke to capitalize on an extra-man opportunity and end the first quarter with the score knotted at 1-1.

Once again, the second quarter saw the Bulldogs score first followed by a Fairfield response. For Yale, it was Lucas Cotler converting a feed from Jack Tigh. The Stags’ answered with Burke getting free on a pick set by Joe Rodrigues to uncork his fourth goal of the season.

Yale struck early in the third quarter on a Sessa goal assisted by Reeves, and the tally remained at 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs until the closing seconds of the stanza. The Stags appeared to have quelled a late Yale threat when Morrill’s shot rang off the post, but the Sessa elevated to grab the rebound and send in home in one motion, extending the Bulldogs’ cushion to 4-2 with 8.7 seconds left in the period.

Yale widened the gap 31 seconds into the final quarter on Reeves’ lone goal of the day, but Fairfield was quick to answer as Brennan got loose in front and sent home a pass from Burke to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 13:09 to go.

The Stags would not score again, however, as Tigh added a pair of fourth-quarter markers and Sessa scored on the vacant cage with 62 seconds left to round out the final at 8-3 in favor of the visiting Bulldogs.

Yale held a 40-23 advantage in shots and a 30-20 lead in ground balls. The Stags forced 16 Bulldogs’ turnovers while committing 11 giveaways. Both teams were nearly perfect on the clear with Fairfield converting 22-of-23 attempts and Yale posting an 18-for-19 mark.

“We continue to be a work in progress, but I thought the guys were ready to play today,” said Head Coach Andy Copelan. “We played very hard, but as the game wore on our execution deteriorated a bit, and we have to fix that.”

The Stags continue their six-game residency at Rafferty Stadium with a visit from #20 Penn State on Saturday, March 17. Opening faceoff on Conway Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. with all of the action set to air live on the Lax Sports Network.
