“With our very full cruising calendar, we were extremely pleased with the smooth and efficient application of ALEXSEAL® that allowed us to stay on schedule and

get back on the water right on time. One year later, our ALEXSEAL® finish looks great and has been effortless to maintain,” continued Captain Fleckenstein.

Because ALEXSEAL’s technical advances allow facilities to increase their productivity and vessels to spend more time on the water, it’s not surprising that more and more are making the switch to ALEXSEAL®. Next time you encounter an ALEXSEAL® wet-look finish like the one found on Apogee and thousands of other vessels, take a good look. What you see is what counts.

The Official Newsletter of ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings - Volume I, Issue I

Until ALEXSEAL®, selecting a yacht coatings system has always meant compromise. No longer do you have to choose between hard to scratch yet hard to repair polyester based systems and easy to repair yet easy to scratch acrylic based systems. The innovative and proprietary formulations found in the ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings system have refined your choice: You can now have a yacht finish that is both hard to scratch and easy to repair.

In 2002, ALEXSEAL’s parent company and paint pioneer, Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co., of Hamburg, Germany directed its 150-plus chemists and a select group of world renowned marine coatings

veterans with the task of developing a new yacht coatings system. The directive was to incorporate the latest advances in chemical bonding, the highest global environmental standards, and the current and future availability of raw materials into the best yacht paint in the world. The result of this collective effort – ALEXSEAL® – a revolutionary yacht coatings system that better meets the priorities of discriminating yacht owners while providing a consistent yet adaptable system for applicators.

After extensive real-market field trials to test and refine the product line, Mankiewicz introduced the ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings system to the world.

Composite Finish: Hard to Scratch. Easy to Repair.

In just a short time, the marine market has recognized and widely accepted the highly desirable qualities of ALEXSEAL’s products, and the mirror finish of the ALEXSEAL® system can be found on thousands of yachts. Marquis builders such as Cheoy Lee, Hatteras, Icon, Wally and Westport have all acknowledged ALEXSEAL’s superiority, and in the most flattering way: they use ALEXSEAL® to finish the fine-crafted vessels that bear their names. • Whistler is Lyman-Morse’s 54’ twin jet express cruiser – and is their largest jet boat to date. Built for an owner with impeccable taste, she is a fine representation of their world-renowned Maine craftsmanship. She is also their first of many new builds to use ALEXSEAL®.

Lyman-Morse’s custom boat building yard on the coast of Maine is one with a most distinguished history. After more than a century of serving the northeast’s boating community, the boat building company expanded its focus in the late 1970’s to produce a variety of exceptional custom

sailing yachts and custom motor yachts for world-class naval architects and discriminating owners.

Lyman-Morse represents the perfect marriage of traditionally stalwart construction and cutting edge engineering – just as ALEXSEAL® applies a century’s worth of research and development into our system, meeting the priorities of discerning yacht owners better than existing paints, and giving applicators technologically advanced products with consistent and adaptable physical properties.

ALEXSEAL® has passed one of the most esteemed tests given by this respected authority. We are humbled to be part of a project that was also selected as Southern Boating’s Designer’s Choice in June 2008.

Townsend Bay Marine’s 127’ Sportfish Cielo MareAfter thirty-eight months of meticulous work at Washington state’s Townsend Bay Marine, the second-largest sportfish vessel built in the United States was launched this September sporting a majestic finish of ALEXSEAL® Matterhorn White.

When asked about ALEXSEAL® being the chosen coatings system for the landmark 127-foot Cielo Mare, Townsend Bay CEO Paul Zeusche commented, “As with all aspects of this project, our client was looking for assurance that the finish would be first-class and durable. ALEXSEAL® was able to provide a guarantee that they

would stand behind their product, which was a significant benefit to both the owner and builder.”

Zeusche continued, “ALEXSEAL® was fully involved from the start of the fairing process. Their support, enthusiasm and willingness to address any problem head-on was a refreshing change. Regular attendance on-site also helped ensure the very best outcome.”

Genuinely concerned with the success of every application, it was a true honor to be a part of this project. Look for more break-through collaborations from Townsend Bay Marine and ALEXSEAL® in the near future.

Icon Yachts #1 Launches with ALEXSEAL®Icon Yachts, a new builder of luxury yachts in Holland, partnered with ALEXSEAL® to provide the industry’s best combination of appearance, durability & repairability. Icon Yachts presented ALEXSEAL® with the opportunity to match a unique dark gray shade and create a striking custom hull color. The Color Metrics Department at ALEXSEAL® parent company Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co. applied their proprietary chemistry to not only create a robust match, but a quality coating with exceptional resistance to corrosion, unsurpassed durability and repairability that no other paint can offer.

Mankiewicz Design Department Director, Veronica Rüter, also created special interior colors for the wheelhouse of Icon #1. A titanium metallic combined with an anthracite metallic soft coating bestows a luxurious and durable decorative interior yacht finish rivaled only by its complementary colored hull. The special effect metallic paint can be applied over a majority of substrates providing a great opportunity for designers and significant cost savings due to its easy application.

J Class Replica Ranger: A Classic Reinvented

Ranger is a striking example of classic principles infused with the technology of tomorrow. Built at the Danish Shipyard in Skagen, Denmark & recently refit in ALEXSEAL® Snow White by Spain’s

world-renowned Rolling Stock applicators, Ranger’s technologically advanced finish is not the only significant enhancement to her legendary 1930’s J Class pedigree.

This America’s Cup champion replica was exactingly built to the original Ranger lines plan that gave rise to her dominance in the roaring 30’s, yet she now conforms to stringent safety regulations, including bulkheads and escape hatches. This modern rendition also offers the ability to cross oceans with all of the comfort and style found on the world’s finest superyachts.

Just as J Class yachts were born to compete in the most prestigious and challenging race in the sport of sailing, ALEXSEAL® was created to provide a superior finish in the harsh and variable marine environment. From application to normal wear and tear to major repairs, ALEXSEAL’s chemical evolutions offer a coating uniquely tailored to marine applications and yacht service. Whether it’s new construction or a classic restoration, ALEXSEAL® has the complete system to respond to your unique application.

In a secure and uncompromising fashion, the Bandido 75 by Drettmann brings discoverers and individualists to their desired goal. This line of yachts has been designed for a target group that enjoys freedom in a quiet and streamlined fashion, but won’t accept any compromises in terms of luxury and aesthetics. With a near identical company ethos, ALEXSEAL® was the coatings system of choice for this displacement yacht line. The Bandido’s endurance and range are unbeatable, just as ALEXSEAL’s coatings are superior in technology and durability.

The Bandido 75 is a pocket explorer that packs a lot of long-haul punch into a small package. Introduced last year at boot Düsseldorf, the Bandido 75 is a cruiser of

The generic health and safety guidance presented in this poster is not intended to be exhaustive and does not replace or take precedence over health and safety legislation. It is the user’s duty to perform a personalised risk assessment prior to carrying out an application and to assess the correct levels of protection required to safe guard human health. For more information on the levels of protection offered by specific items of personal protective equipment consult the manufacturer.

Health Tips for Spraying Epoxy Based CoatingsBest practices for all people involved in the application of epoxy based materials

During Spraying• Ensure that only essential personnel are in the surrounding area and that they too are wearing the correct personal protection equipment. Anyone not essential to the work should be asked to leave the area.

    • Vapors should be removed by ventilation or extraction.• Change filters and gloves regularly and change clothing when it becomes heavily contaminated.

After Spraying• Wash hands well before eating, drinking, smoking or going to the bathroom.• Remove any paint from the skin with cold water and soap.• Remove contaminated clothing and gloves carefully and dispose of them safely if necessary.• Shower before leaving the facility or as soon as possible following contact with paint or dryspray.• Use a general purpose moisturising cream to replace natural skin oils.• Wash and dry the inside of your face mask every day after use and store it safely.• Wash contaminated cotton overalls, sweat bands and any other clothing before re-using them.• Do not use solvent to remove paint from skin.• Do not leave the facility or travel in contaminated clothing or equipment.• Do not eat or drink in the work area.

Important Facts• The longer the application time, the greater the chances of coming into contact with paint and solvent vapors.

    • The more paint used, the greater the chances of coming into contact with paint and solvent vapors.

    • Confined or closed spaces can increase the chances of coming into contact with paint and solvent vapors.

    • Solvent vapors and air can form explosive mixtures.• Solvent vapors can force air out of an area lowering the oxygen level, which can cause breathing difficulties or even suffocation.

    • Cartridge filters, gloves and clothing will gradually become less effective as they stop more and more spray particles and vapor.

Before Spraying• Read the TDS and MSDS and make yourself familiar with the health and safety instructions for the product(s) you are using.

    • Reference the table below to help decide what protective equipment should be worn.• Protective equipment such as face masks, gloves and eye protection should carry a CE mark.• Ensure all protective equipment is properly maintained, inspected and replaced when worn out.• Consult a health and safety adviser, manager or representative with any questions or concerns.

Open Air Confined Spaces Spray Tent Workshop Spray Booth Comments

Full, Air-fed • Mask selection depends on the hazard of the paint, job length and amount of paint, in addition to job location.• Use particulate and vapor cartridges.• Always carefully inspect the mask for signs of damage.• Check for fit before use - facial hair may interfere with a proper seal around the face.• Determine cartridge filter life and change them before they become ineffective.• Change the cartridge as soon as there is a smell of solvent.

    Full, Cartridge

    Half, Cartridge

Goggles • This depends on repirator/mask selection.• Wear either a full face mask, goggles or safety glasses depending on the situation.• Use tear off strips on a full face mask.

    Safety Glasses

Cotton • Wear a long sleeve, long leg cotton overall.• Overalls should be a minimum of 60% cotton.• Keep the buttons and zippers done up at all times.• Make sure there are no gaps or exposed skin at the wrists or ankles.

Disposable • Use disposables over a cotton overall in situations when paint exposure is potentially high.• Discard disposable overalls every day.• Replace any overall (both cotton and disposable) immediately if paint gets through them.

Gloves • Wear chemical resistant gloves with long sleeves which overlap the overall.• Replace your gloves as soon as they look dirty inside.

Boots • Wear anti-static safety boots with steel toe caps which also should cover the anklesBarrier Cream • Apply to exposed skin that cannot be covered by protective equipment.

    • Do not use instead of, or in place of, protective equipment.• Do not use petroleum jelly based products.

    Continued from Page 1

Boat International’s 2009 Motoryacht of the Year, the 133 meter superyacht, Al Mirqab, is coated in ALEXSEAL®. In addition to these builder-partners and over 135 other OEMs, our distribution includes companies throughout Asia, South America, the United States and the shipbuilding countries of Europe. Our exponential growth means that yachtsmen can expect to find ALEXSEAL® products, applicators, and service wherever their cruises take them.

ALEXSEAL’s success is not just the story of a new yacht coating; it’s the story of a new way of thinking about yacht coatings. The industry veterans of ALEXSEAL® know that a good applicator, unlimited time and money and a proper painting environment can produce an acceptable looking initial finish with almost any coating system. To help ensure a superior finish every time, ALEXSEAL® focuses on balancing how the numerous attributes of our system respond to the harsh and

variable marine environment, from application to normal wear and tear to major repairs.

The continual development of exceptional ALEXSEAL® products is due to our steadfast focus on the ever-changing demands of the marine environment. Our system is founded on Mankiewicz’s proprietary coatings chemistry which has effectively protected a wide range of machinery from continuous heat and friction, scorching UV rays and dramatic pressure and

temperature changes. And while other yacht coating lines may also be derived from industrial applications, ALEXSEAL® specifically rebalanced the chemical formulations of its products to favor both the applicator and the yacht owner. ALEXSEAL® offers a better balance of attributes to best serve the marine market.

ALEXSEAL®, through Mankiewicz, has access to the premier suppliers of raw materials worldwide. Picking the best ingredients is always a good place to start. Next, ALEXSEAL® chemists discovered that by using a very specific combination of polyol resins and catalysts, they could achieve a reactivity that targets 100% molecular cross-linkage, meaning every molecule is matched, mated and connected with

    another one after cure. Unmatched m o l e c u l e s can lead to a breached finish and the resulting disappointments of lost protection and beauty. Achieving 100% c r o s s - l i n k a g e is a lofty goal and it’s the primary reason A L E X S E A L ®

not only provides the most lustrous finish, but also retains gloss better. It’s also what gives ALEXSEAL® its higher resistance to chemical attack and abrasion; and, it is even the reason why ALEXSEAL® is repairable despite the hardness it achieves from its polyurethane roots.

The ALEXSEAL® team recognized that the need for durability and reparability were both priorities for a yacht coating system. One or the other alone wasn’t enough. By taking advantage of

new advances in resin technology discovered by Mankiewicz’s forward-looking chemists, ALEXSEAL’s aliphatic polyester polyurethane coatings allow the pigment to saturate the paint film all the way through to cure. Traditional polyurethanes separate out into a clear coat on the surface, with the color or pigment underneath. When a repair is needed, these traditional coatings require buffing and sanding all the way through the clear coat of the finish in order to blend the color portion. This need to deeply abrade the coating during repairs results in more prominent halo effects and makes completing a seamless repair much more difficult. ALEXSEAL’s proprietary finish is hard like competing polyurethanes to provide superior scratch, solvent and abrasion resistance; but because our high-tech resins create a cured film that is shot through with pigment, the repairer does not need to use such aggressive abrasion techniques. Your repair is completed with far less effort and can be buffed out with less chance of seeing a halo. In short, ALEXSEAL® delivers what might be called a composite finish: Tough to scratch, and easy to repair.

ALEXSEAL’s global team of highly trusted, experienced and knowledgeable professionals are backed by the longevity of Mankiewicz – assuring builders, refinishers, and owners that this brand will continue to raise the standards of innovation and customer service in the marine coatings industry.

“When you, your captain, or your service manager calls ALEXSEAL ®, an

experienced coatings pro with a genuine concern for the success of your yacht’s

    finish is there for you.”
