Fairy from Fantasia land Crochet pattern

Introduction In 2013 there was a crochet challenge (CAL = Crochet –A-Long) at MadCrochetLab. One of the items to make or design was a fairy. I have written the pattern from my own fairy, so you too can make also a Fairy. The pattern can be used for other little fantasy figures, like gnomes. More information on my blogs: http://elzeboom.wordpress.com/ (Dutch) http://elzeblaadje.wordpress.com/ (English)

Yarn and Hook For a small fairy you will best use thin yarn and a thin hook. I have used SMC Catania fine cotton (pink) and hook 2.0 mm. With 1 skein you can make several fairies and gnomes. For the wings and hair you will need some white cotton yarn and some fluffy yarn. The clothes can be made with all kinds of thin yarn. Coated wire is needed to make the arms and legs bendable. I use chenille. You need also beads for the eyes, stuffing and a little bit of embroidery thread for the face.

US terminology is used MR = Magic ring sc = Single crochet hdc = Half double crochet dc = Double crochet trc = Treble crochet slst = Slipstitch ch = Chain st = Stitch p = Picot = ch 3, turn, slst in ch 3 from the hook inc = Increase across the round/row by making 2 sc in 1 sc dec = decrease across the round/row by joining together 2 sc (1) = number of stitches in row/round

Technique The main technique is crocheting in the round and in a spiral way. Additional techniques are Magic Ring (MR), Increasing and decreasing (invisible), color changing and embroidery. There are many video and photo tutorials online to learn these techniques.

Marking Mark the first stitch of the first round by bringing the pitch thread forwards or by using a colored thread or stitch marker.

end with a slst on one side 15. Fasten off, leave long tail 16. Stuff the neck and body and sew it together. 17. You can make underwear by changing the skin-color of the body for the last rounds. Do the same

with the legs.

You can dress the Fairy at this point, before making

the wings, with a fine dress or other garment of your

own making. Some ideas are written down in another

section of this pattern.

Lace Wings (make 2)

1. Start with a chain of 8, close the ring with a slst. 2. 10 sc in the ring (basic ring), end with a slst; (see photograph above) 3. 2 slst in the ring, ch 7, skip 2, 2 slst in the ring, ch 7, skip 2, 1 sc in the ring, ch 7, skip 2, 1 slst in the

ring. 4. Turn, 8 sc in the first loop, 2 slst, 8 sc in the second loop, 1 slst, (4 sc, 1 p, 4 sc) in the third loop, 1

slst. 5. Don’t turn, 6 slst along the side of the basic ring, until the first loop, ch 8, attach with a sc in the first

loop, ch 8, attach with a sc in the second loop; 6. Turn, 4 sc in the second loop, 1 p, 4 sc, repeat for the next loop, 4 sc in the last loop, 1 sc in the st

under the loop, 4 sc, and 4 slst; fasten off. 7. Make another wing 8. Sew the wings to the body or dress

Alternative wings Start with ch 7, 1 sc in the second chain of the hook, the next st 1 hdc, in the next 2 st 2 dc, in the last st 4 dc. Crochet on the other side of the pitch chain, 2 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc, ch 2 and slst in the first st of the pitch chain. Make another wing in the same way and make 2 smaller wings in which the pitch chain is 6. Sew the wings to the back of the fairy. Use some silver or gold colored yarns for the wings.

Wig and hair With fluffy yarn, hook 3 or more: Crochet a chain of 6, turn, skip 1, 4 sc. Increase to 6 sc in next row, two rows. Last row; decrease to 4 sc, fasten off, and sew to the head. This is just one way to do the wig. You can also make a wig and run with it a fluffy yarn thread. Or you can with bulky or fluffy yarn sew or knot to the head. Curly hear can be crocheted, make a chain, as long as you like, turn and crochet in each st 2 sc. Use your imagination and make the hair you like.

Making Fairy Clothes

Material For the dresses, use fine yarn, while you need just a little bit of yarn, you can use leftover yarn. Choose a matching hook. You’ll need some little buttons and snaps, some elastic, sequins and matching needles. Also use your imagination, for my instructions are very global. Dress Crochet a bunch of leaves! (See pattern hereafter). Crochet a skirt; start with a chain that befits the body. Crochet alternating single and double crochet rows/rounds on the chain. For a wide skirt you have to increase regularly around. For a small skirt you increase a few stitches in the second row or round. For a flared skirt you increase a few stitches every second or third row/round. Make a bodice on the skirt and attach 10 sc, turn, ch 2, 1 hdc, 2 trc, ch 1, 2 slst, ch 1, 2 trc, 2 hdc, turn, (eventually crochet 10 sc extra). Because of the trc the bodice gets some form. Sew the leaves to the bodice. Crochet 2 shoulder straps and sew them to the bodice. Allow room for the wings! Decorate the dress with beads or sequins.

The jacket dress

Start with a chain that befits the body spaciously. Crochet sc and dc rows, till the height is sufficient (length knees-armpits). Divide the work in three parts, the middle part as wide as the body and two parts a bit smaller than that but wider than half the body. Crochet each part till the length reaches to the shoulders, fasten off and sew the parts together. Crochet a brim with picots along the sides and sew 2 snaps to the front parts. Decorate the dress with crocheted flowers.

Hat

With 3 leaves sewn together, you have a hat. Fold one leaf.

The panties

Crochet with white yarn a tube that fits the body. Crochet a few rounds with different stitches end with a row of picots. Lace a thread or elastic up the waist, Sew the middle part together, your panties are done..

Leaf

Crochet; ch 13, turn, skip 1, 1 slst,1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 trc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 slst And on the other side of the pitch chain crochet, ch 1, 1 slst,1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 2 trc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 slst, fasten off or crochet a next leaf. Do you want a stem, crochet a few more stitches to the chain and crochet slst along the stem.

Making Gnomes with the Fairy pattern

Start with the head, crochet this the same as the fairy’s head or vary a bit in number of stitches and rounds. After the head and neck, crochet the body in a nice color for the gnome jacket. Midway change the color and start crocheting the trousers. Make a potbelly by increasing a few stitches on both sides. Decrease the same number of stitches after a few rounds. Crochet the arms with the color of the jacket; make 7 sc instead of 6 sc. make the hands in skin color. A collar to the jacket can be made by crocheting a chain around the neck with 1 row of sc on it. In the same way you can make a belt! Embroider the buckle in another color. The legs of the gnome

1. Start with a MR with 6 sc in it, in the color of the shoes (6), end with a slst.

2. Inc in every stitch 1 sc (12), end with a slst, 3. 12 sc around (12). end with a slst, 4. Dec 3 sc at the front of the legs (9) end with a slst. 5. Change color, to the color of the trousers, crochet the first row in the back loop of the stitches (9) 6. Crochet till trouser leg is long enough, 7. Make another leg. 8. Fasten off, sew the legs to the body.

The gnomes have a beard and bald head. Make hair and beard by crocheting a chain with fluffy yarn and sew these to the head. With the crocheted leaves you can make a vest. You need 4 leaves, seaming the tops and sides of the leaves together to make the vest. With 3 leaves you can make a hat, fold one leaf on the front side of the hat. Making the pointed hat of the gnome goes as follows. You start at the point of the hat with a MR and 5 sc in it. Crochet in a spiral, Inc every fifth stitch 1 sc. Stop increasing if the hat is wide enough, crochet a few rounds more and fasten off.

Fantasia Land The fairies and gnomes are living in Fantasia Land. Make some mushrooms, flowers, critters, unicorns and the rainbow bridge. In the middle of the fairy valley grows the enchanted tree, of which I also have written a pattern.

Much fun with the pattern, Alice
