FAITH CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Newsletter 9th November 2015 Term 4 Week 6

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

From the Principal

Everyone wants to walk on water but who is willing to step out of the

boat?

I have been greatly encouraged recently with the completion of our

final Government review meeting where we received positive

feedback and a tick from all three independent reviewers.

I was also impressed to see two of our secondary students, Ronin

and Laura, preaching at the C3 Church Youth Night. They were

amazing and I was delighted to see 15 to 20 of our students there

supporting them on the night. I also was blessed just last week to

see my 8 year old son preaching at the Light of the World day in

Logan to a crowd of hundreds. His voice was very clear and strong

as he and three other speakers told the audience who our real

Super Hero is –Jesus!

I heard him speak last year also with clarity also and yet just a year

prior I could hardly understand a word he said to me. Michael’s

speech seemed to take forever and then, he obviously got out of the boat and stood up for Jesus and I

believe God helped him walk on water. I had tears in my eyes as I watched and when I see our students

doing so well, I know this is why we as parents want to encourage our children to overcome and to step out

in faith to be all they can be.

I also enjoyed watching my daughter and many other students from Faith CSDE performing up on stage or

helping in the outreach. Congratulations to all involved.

Report Visit Times A report visit timetable has been set and teachers are looking forward to sitting with parents and encouraging students with all their hard work and achievements. Please try to have books and work organised for the staff when they come, as it is a big ask. Remember, our staff are coming to support you and to report on what students have done and to acknowledge progress as well as achievement. Teachers will also be working hard in the last week of term to update programs to help everyone be organised for the New Year.

Shot Put, Discus and long Jump were enjoyed by all.

Athletics was again another very successful day and I was pleased to see 85 plus students participating

with heart. Our students’ behaviour was excellent, as usual, and it was good to see the students so positive

and friendly. Thanks to the teachers who made the day such a success.

Reaching new heights at the bar was raised!

A Very “Mixed Bag” at North Brisbane’s Term 4 Workshop Little drums (of both genders), screaming carrots, virtual robots, mousetrap-powered race-cars, painting in thin air, chemistry from cabbages: these were some of the unusual and absorbing activities undertaken by North Brisbane students during our recent Term Four workshop. Our special guest, Sunshine Coast teacher Mrs Scott-Wilson, once again engaged students in some fascinating high (and low) tech tasks, such as the Leap Motion system (see https://www.leapmotion.com/) where a computer can be controlled by moving your hand around in mid-air! She also rigged up some carrots to an electronic circuit board, and students listened to the vegetables “screaming” as they were sliced up. Mrs Scott-Wilson also helped students make some great drag racers, powered by mousetraps and with wheels made from CDs. Mr Furnivall helped the younger students make an excellent and colourful Pellet Drum, either a “Mr” or a “Mrs” version. They made a great noise when students spun them back and forth. Mr F also showed the older groups of students how they could measure the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of liquids using a pH indicator solution made from red cabbage! Over on the laptops with Mr P-D, students were introduced to an educational puzzle/game called LightBot (see http://lightbot.com/). In this series of progressively more difficult puzzles, students have to program the LightBot to move around and over obstacles to light up the blue target squares. Even some of the youngest students got up to Level 7 or 8, while a student in one of the older groups got to Level 11 in their 45 minute session - fantastic efforts in coding and problem-solving. LightBot is available for iPads/iPhones, Windows and Mac PCs, Android devices and even runs on Kindle e-readers! Mr Caldwell brought along the school’s amazing insect collection for students to see, and also had an opportunity to answer some questions from parents about aspects of senior schooling.

(file: Screaming carrots) No vegetables were harmed in the filming of this workshop (we hope!)

(file: Pellet drums) Piper and Paige demonstrate their colourfully decorated Mr & Mrs Pellet Drums

(file: Red Cabbage pH meter 1) Daniel, Reilly and Lucas ponder the strange measuring of pH with …… cabbage juice??

(file: Red Cabbage pH meter 2) The mysteries of acidity and alkalinity are investigated by Hannah, Emma and Pascalle

Gold Coast Term 4 Workshop We crept into the Gold Coast Baptist church on Friday 30th of November knowing that something unusual was going on. This was not a normal Faith CSDE workshop; it was strangely and eerily different. We were informed that a crime had taken place. Wet footprints were in the church, white powder had been left behind, chocolate had been eaten, the fish bowl was broken and the terrified little fish were

gasping for breath. The culprit had to be found! The day was peppered with forensic science activities used to equip us with the necessary skills to solve the mystery. We learnt about teeth impressions, foot to height ratios, how to test powder, fingerprinting and more. Using our new found skills we were then able to scientifically analyse all the clues, examine the dossier of

suspects and determine who the intruder was. “Jake the Fake” was arrested! Case closed! A job well done by the newest recruits to the Faith CSDE Gold Coast C.S.I. team.

North Brisbane skaters are very cool (literally)! On Tuesday 3rd of November, a small but enthusiastic group of ice-skaters (including Mr Furnivall and some parents) hit the cool ice rink at Deagon on a very warm day (outside). Mr P-D was impressed with our students’ (and Mums’) prowess on the ice, with some very cool moves in evidence. Thanks for organising this event, Mr F!

“The Oliver boys take a well-earned breather”

“The very fast-on-their-feet Dowd siblings are just a blur…”

“Mrs Holyoak shows Paige the ropes (love that exotic hat, Paige!)”

On the second last day of term 3 we had a visit from Australia’s Most Deadly Australians. Children and parents braved the weather to find out more about Deadly Australians, like the Brown Snake, the Red Back Spider, Funnel Web spider and blue ringed octopus to name a few.

Fortunately some of these were not alive but preserved so we could see what they looked like. We received some great posters at the end and everyone was able to handle a snake just before the sky opened up and we all raced away to the dryness of our cars.

We were very fortunate to be able to have the entertaining team from Questacon Science Circus visit our workshop to teach us about flow, vibration and how water fills the shape into which it is poured.

We learnt that liquids flow at different rates. Cornflour and water, for example, have a flow to it when you draw it out of a bowl with your hand, but if you punch it, it holds its shape fairly well. If you try to throw it from the bowl the causes it to stay put and not flow out. Students

compared the flow of honey with water and strawberry syrup.

Do you remember which was the slowest? Which was the fastest? The children were entertained and amused by the Questacon Science Circus.

Katie showed us how music is made by . When we hear

sound we are using our ears. If you stop the vibration the sound stops. She put a tuning fork into water and the water vibrated. You could see the ripples. Then she put a tuning fork on top of a box and we could hear the sound better.

Mr Lockhart came to talk briefly about levers and how they are used, then he challenged us to use some materials, including a mouse trap and old CD’s, to construct a car that would move forward. Some of the parents thought that more clues might have helped, but this was a group problem solving activity which made children share ideas and work together. We saw some amazing and very different results across the 6 teams. In one group a child designed and drew the steps to take to make their car. This term I have emailed a flyer from Hermitage Science Competition and ask that if you want to be involved in this in 2016 as part of your Science, please let me know as soon as possible so I can enter your family now and we will all be ready to start on January 25th 2016.

To all my wonderful mothers who work tirelessly to educate their children, I want to commend you for taking up this high calling. There are certain to be times when you ask yourself why you do it, but as a parent with grown children I want to affirm what you do. Although you are busy now, racing around trying to help each one get the special teaching they need, your time with them at this stage of their life is very short. Try to envisage the future when you look upon each one as they embark upon their life’s journey, knowing that you have done your best to make them ready for God’s service, wherever it will take them. Remember I am here to guide and assist you where needed. I believe in what you are doing and I count it a privilege to journey with you and your children.
