You and I are creatures of habit and if you make good
habits…good habits will make you. This wisdom has
been around since ancient times. Aristotle once said:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not
an act but a habit.”
The subconscious mind – the habitual mind – is over
one million times more powerful than the conscious
mind. This means that we spend a substantial amount
of our lifetime on “autopilot,” playing out the mental
programs that govern our behavior.
For example, while driving a car and carrying on a
conversation with someone, the conscious mind is
attending to what is being said. Meanwhile, the
subconscious mind is turning on the turn signal.
Hitting the brakes. Attending to oncoming traffic.
Monitoring our blood sugar. Regulating our
breathing. Planning our next move and on and on.
The subconscious mind is so vast and so powerful that
we do not even know what it is thinking or capable of.
It truly runs our lives – whether we know it or not!
Habits begin and manifest deep in the mind and they
can be friends or foes. Good habits can make our lives
easier, helping us to do the more mundane things of
life without thinking about them. Such as automatically
depositing your paycheck.
But, as all of us know all too well, habits can also be
destructive... to our health, to our finances, to our
relationships. It’s why we struggle with losing weight,
FAITH & WORK 4
Excellence is a Habit!A Mess age f rom W i l l i a m V . D a y
paying off our credit cards or quitting smoking…to name a few
“bad habits.”
Whether they are positive forces in our lives or obstacles to the
goals we want to achieve, habits become ingrained through
repeated actions.
Here is a little test to display the power of our habits. Cross your
arms as you normally would, and look down to see which one
is on top. About half of you will have your right arm on top and
the other half will have the left on top.
When you crossed your arms for the very first time, you might
have been still in your playpen, and you have been crossing
your arms the same way ever since.
Now, cross your arms again, but this time put the opposite arm
on top. It feels extremely weird! If you were to challenge yourself
to cross your arms the “wrong” way for the rest of your life,
could you do it? Probably. Would it be difficult? You bet it would!
The real key to success is replacing destructive habits with
successful habits.
To win – to break self-defeating attitudes and behaviors – we
must understand that we have the power to choose and the
power to change. We have the power to let go of old thinking
and adopt the mindset of a champion. And God is the all-time
champion!
God bless,
WVD

Eric Rudich, 34-year-old father,
In one smoke-filled moment, 34-year-
old Eric Rudich’s life completely
changed.
On Nov. 10, 2013, fire consumed the
Rudich apartment in Ambridge, PA. Trapped
on the third floor, Eric helped his wife,
Spring, and four year old son, Isaiah, leap
to safety. A neighbor caught his son, and
his wife landed on a mattress the neighbor
pushed beneath the window. Isaiah suffered
smoke inhalation while Spring sustained
fractured ribs, pelvis and hip as well as
smoke inhalation. Both are now recovered.
Blinded by thick, black smoke, Eric missed
the mattress and landed on the ground,
feet first. Eric’s pelvis, ribs and lumbar
spine were fractured, and the intense
smoke sent him into respiratory distress,
requiring him to be intubated
and trached. Hospitalized for
over a month in the Mercy
Hospital burn unit, Eric
needed intense rehabilitation.
St. Barnabas took over his
recovery on Dec. 19, 2013.
Eric was admitted to Valencia
Woods at St. Barnabas with a
pelvic halo – fashioned with two to eight
inch metal rods – to stabilize his pelvis
while the bones healed. He was non-weight
bearing, so his therapy was adapted to
meet this restriction. Eric’s daily rehab
consisted of physical, occupational and
speech therapy as well as constant
nursing care for his pelvic halo.
Meanwhile, Eric’s young family are living
with his parents, Charles and Shelda
Rudich, in Economy Borough. The family
visit as often as they can, and occasionally,
Eric’s co-workers at Giant Eagle in
Cranberry check in with him.
Physical therapist Cory Meeker reports
that Eric has gradually progressed to mild
weight-bearing exercises, although he has
no use of his right leg and foot. Ahead of
Eric looms additional spinal surgeries to
repair lumbar fractures.
Eric’s spirits go up and down, according
to his Dad. On a snowy Sunday in
February, they soared as the whole family
celebrated Isaiah’s fifth birthday with Eric
at Valencia Woods.
“Eric has a long way to go,” his father said,
“but the Valencia Woods staff is with him
every step of the way. They are great!”
Eric Rudich is is just one of thousands
of patients St. Barnabas has cared for
over its 114 years of service, regardless
of a patient’s ability to pay for that care.
Last year, St. Barnabas’ charity care totaled
$6,013,000.Your gift to St. Barnabas
will underwrite a portion of this care.
Rehab patient Eric Rudich shares a rare moment of laughter with physical therapist Cory Meeker as he works with a weight to strengthen his right arm.

Four talented young vocalists received the coveted Kean
Quest awards, including one presented by 14-year-old
Jackie Evancho, at St. Barnabas Charities’ 11th annual
Kean Quest Talent Competition on April 11, 2014.
(Winners are listed on www.keantheatre.com.)
The teenage national singing sensation, made famous by
her 2010 performance on NBC’s America’s Got Talent,
is a neighbor of St. Barnabas and a two-time finalist in
the Kean Quest talent search. She presents the “Jackie
Evancho Award” each year to the finalist, who, like her,
competed in two or more Kean Quests.
Kean Quest is held in St. Barnabas’ Kean Theatre and
benefits the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund, helping
nursing and living assistance patients receive charity
care at five St. Barnabas health care facilities. In Kean
Quest, nine rounds rally contestants, 188 this year, to
compete for a host of prizes including a personal
recording session. The finals were to be held Friday,
April 11. The adult finals took place one week prior.
Contestants generate dollars for the Free Care Fund with
their entry fees and by selling tickets to performances.
The Audience Choice Award adds incentive for performers
to fill seats with supportive…and voting…friends and family.
A host of sponsors underwrite the staging and technical
costs of the Kean Theatre.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and first lady Susan gave
the 14,406th gift of PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® 30th season to
St. Barnabas Nursing Home patient Donnie Hersh. Since 1984
the St. Barnabas Charities’ five-state program has matched
505,579 nursing and living assistance patients with Christmas
presents. Governor and Mrs. Corbett served as Honorary
Chairpersons for the 2013 campaign.
The 30th campaign succeeded with such an impressive goal
because of the generosity and talents of PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®
partner WPXI-TV, corporate sponsors TRIB Total Media, Paracca
Interiors and Diamond Pharmacy Services, 52 businesses, as
well as 981 volunteer hours and the support of individual
donors and gift givers. Many donated $30 or more so that
patients could receive a “Somebody at PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®
Loves Me” sweatshirt. For the last four years, Presque Isle
Downs and Casino has contributed $81,970 to the program.

Family Homestead Donated to St. Barnabas
Rudy and Judi Hoffmann of Gibsonia are truly good
neighbors. They recently donated the Penn Hills home
Rudy grew up in to St. Barnabas. Rudy modestly calls
the gift a win-win for St. Barnabas and the Hoffmanns.
“It supports the St. Barnabas Mission of free care and I do not
have the hassle of selling the home,” he confides.
But there is a deeper motivation for Rudy.
Rudy’s father, Rudy Sr., died in 2003. Years before that, Rudy
was his father’s daytime caregiver, traveling every day from
Gibsonia to Penn Hills after working the night shift as a
custodian for the Pine-Richland School District.
“I know first-hand the amount of time and dedication required
in taking care of a person, so I can truly appreciate the work of
St. Barnabas,” Rudy explained.
“It had been ten years since my father’s death, time to make a
decision about the family home. Our children were not interested
in living there. Shawn and his wife Becky live in Gibsonia; David
lives in West Deer, and Sarah lives at home.”
The Hoffmanns have been more than neighbors of St. Barnabas
for 40 years, using the St. Barnabas Medical Center’s dental
services and attending Kean Theatre performances. Their
daughter Sarah, who just graduated from La Roche College, still
plays piano for the St. Barnabas Nursing Home patients.
“Judi and I could not think of a better use for the family home
than to gift it to St. Barnabas, the best neighbor ever.”
You, too, can support St. Barnabas Free Care Fund with a
non-traditional donation like the Hoffmanns. St. Barnabas
Charities accepts stock, real estate and automobiles. Furniture
and estate household items will be picked up by the Beautiful
Buys thrift shoppes and sold to benefit needy patients at
St. Barnabas’ skilled nursing and living assistance facilities.

Memory
A frail 84-year-old woman left
the United States in 2012 to
return to her native Germany,
seeking to live out her last years in her
beloved Berlin.
Germany would not accept her. She
had no means of support. She had
forfeited her German citizenship when
she married an American G.I. and
became a U.S. citizen in 1958. The
American Embassy in Berlin arranged
for her return to the U.S. She had no
family, no friends, nowhere to live.
Until St. Barnabas entered the picture.
With the help of a Benedictine sister,
she was admitted to The Arbors at
St. Barnabas in Valencia on May 10, 2012.
St. Barnabas accepted responsibility for
her care – medically, emotionally and
financially.
Late in January of this year, she was
hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer.
She had a large mass in her neck and
chest. She was dying. On Feb. 3, 2014,
she was admitted to St. Barnabas’
Hospice Program, so that she could be
kept comfortable and as free from pain
as possible in the Arbors room that had
become her home, decorated with
stuffed animals and her crochet work.
On March 20, 2014, she died. She was
86 years old. Her St. Barnabas family
took care of all the arrangements: paid
the funeral director, chose the service,
and provided the casket and the plot
of land in Mars Cemetery where she
is buried.
The G.I. bride was just 26 years old when
she married her American serviceman.
They started their married life in Beaver
County, living in Rochester, PA. She
became a real estate agent, licensed to
sell residential and commercial
property in Pennsylvania and West
Virginia. Unfortunately, the marriage did
not last. They divorced and went their
separate ways. Her life after that was
troubled. She even served time in
prison. Her attempt to return to
Germany and happier times failed,
but did bring her to St. Barnabas
and sanctuary.
Thank God for St. Barnabas and the
generous donors from all over the
United States and abroad who
contribute to the St. Barnabas Free
Care Fund. Because of them, she
died with dignity, surrounded by the
St. Barnabas staff who had become
her family.
The St. Barnabas Free Care Fund
makes it possible for patients like
this to receive the best of medical
care in a warm, caring environment
regardless of their ability to pay for
that care. Last year, more than $6
million in free care was provided by
St. Barnabas to patients in need and
in pain.
Please join us in remembering all
such lonely patients by sending a
donation in her memory to the
St. Barnabas Free Care Fund in the
enclosed yellow envelope.
