FREEDOM’S DAWNAugust 1947

This dawn that’s marked and wounded,

This dawn that night has nibbled on

It’s not the dawn we expected;

It’s not the dawn we were looking for.

Hoping we would find it somewhere,

Friends, comrades set out thinking

Page 14: Faiz ahmad faiz

Do Not Ask of Me, My Love

Do not ask for me, my love,

That love I once had for you.

There was a time when

For there are other sorrows in the world than love,

And other pleasure too.

Do not ask of me, my love,

The love I once had for you

Page 15: Faiz ahmad faiz

My Companion, My Friend

If I could just believe my friend

That the sadness in your eyes,

Your heartache without end

Could be ended with my love

My devotion and my care

If my reassuring words could be that pill

Which will wake you from that dark despair

Which will wake you from that dark despair

And wash away the stains of insult from your brow!

Page 16: Faiz ahmad faiz

NOWHERE, NO TRACE

Nowhere, no trace can I discover

Of spilt blood,

Not on the murderer’s hand nor on his sleeve;

No daggers with red lips nor scarlet-pointed swords.

I see no blots on the dust,

No stains on the walls.

Nowhere, nowhere
