Message from the DirectorIn June I had the incredible experience of attending a Positive Youth Sports Alliance of Essex event featuring Travis Roy, the Boston University hockey player who became a quadriplegic 11 seconds into his first collegiate game. It was the most emotional and inspirational 30-minute speech I have ever heard. Travis spoke about several meaningful life lessons like goal setting, love, respect, compassion, and pride. Recently I began reading Travis’ book Eleven Seconds, another emotional and inspirational journey. But there it was again – pride. It was the ninth rule of life in ten that he identified in a speech when he was twenty years old, just months prior to his injury. Pride stuck out to me because in the third week of this summer a gentleman stopped me in the parking lot at Maple Street. He was watching his grandson in tennis lessons. He’s a straight shooter. He letmeknowthattenniswasgreatandthenofferedmesomecandidfeedback about one of the other camps that his grandson was in the week prior. He said that it was good, his grandson was happy, but he thought it could have been better. He proceeded to talk about how great the park looked, and the new pedestrian entrances, and then he said it. “Brad, the look of pride that I see when I walk through the parkandseethesecampcounselorsandmaintenancestaffworkingis amazing.” He said “the look of pride.” Now there are a lot of ways to see and describe people. But, I cannotthinkofanyhigherpraisethantodescribeEJRPstaffasvisiblyprideful. Wearing that sense of pride cannot be taught, explained, or faked. It is a feeling deep inside of you. And once you find it, and others can actually see it in you, it is the truest, most humble display of character. Travis says that pride should always be remembered and acknowledged. Iamproud.Iamproudofourstaff.Iamproudofourprograms.Iam proud of our department. I am proud to be a part of EJRP. To each andeveryEJRPpaidstaffperson, volunteer, friend, andadvocatewhohas developed a sincere commitment to what we do, and dared to wear your pride on your sleeve: I am proud of you.

Proudly,Brad Luck, Director

My girls LOVED the roller derby camp.

I have an 11-year-old and it has been impossible to find a sport that she

was interested in, until now. Thank you for providing the girls in our community with

an alternative but fun sport!

I am impressed by how much

my son is learning new things. Tennis, golf, art projects. He loves

it and we are very pleased.

I’m a very happy momma!

This is the best summer my

daughter has ever had, thank you so much!

My favorite part was seeing

the growth my child made in

[email protected] The Essex Junction Lions Club is a civic organization of volunteers serving Essex Junction and the surrounding areas. Chartered in 1947, one of the first major Essex Junction service projects was the building of the Maple Street Pool in the early 1950s. We participate in the Memorial Day Parade each year, run a concessions stand at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds, and hold raffles and other fundraisers to help support community service projects. Our work benefits local parks, libraries, youth and senior groups, food shelters, and people needing eye exams, glasses, and diabetes screenings. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month, 6:30pm at The Essex, 70 Essex Way. To learn more, contact Betsy MaGee.
