(Virginia Union 52, Livingstone 19) - Hovey Field, Richmond, Va. - Sept. 29, 2018) - Miles Hayes completed 19 of 32 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a 52-19 loss to Virginia Union last Saturday. He also rushed for 66 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. Anthony Faraimo caught fi ve passes for 112 yards and one touchdown. Defensive back Keshawn Ward tallied 11 tackles including two for loss for the Blue Bears. HARDY SELECTED CIAA DEFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK Curtis Hardy (Jr./Washington, DC) of Saint Augustine’s University was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for his performance against Bowie State University on Sept. 26. Hardy registered six tackles and forced a fumble for the Falcons in a 32-22 loss at home on Saturday, Sept. 22. His forced fumble with 1:04 remaining gave the Falcons one last shot at a fourth-quarter comeback against the Bulldogs. The Falcons recovered on their 39-yard line but fumbled on the next play which halted their rally. This is the fi rst CIAA weekly honor for Hardy in his collegiate career. Three Falcons have won CIAA football player of the week awards this season.

SAU-VIRGINIA STATE GAME CANCELED DUE TO HURRICANE FLORENCE The non-conference football game between Saint Augustine’s University and Virginia State University set for Saturday, Sept. 15, at the George Williams Athletic Complex was canceled due to inclement weather caused by Hurricane Florence.

GARRIS NAMED CIAA FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK Roy Garris (Jr./Raleigh, NC) of Saint Augustine’s University was chosen CIAA Defensive Back of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 11 for his career-high 13-tackle performance against North Carolina Central University on Saturday, Sept. 8. Garris was the game’s leading tackler in the loss to Central. His previous career-high was 11 in 2017 against both Livingstone College and Fayetteville State University. A former wide receiver, Garris won the award for the second time in his career. He leads the Falcons in tackles after two games with 17.

SAU DUO WINS HERO SPORTS D2 TOP FOOTBALL PLAY AWARD IN WEEK 1 The Saint Augustine’s University tandem of quarterback Darryl “D.J.” Johnson (Sr./ Richmond, VA) and wide receiver DeAndre Conley (Fr./Miami, FL) provided the NCAA Division II Football Play of the Week in Week 1 according to HERO Sports. The Falcons’ duo tallied the most votes in a fan poll to win the honor over seven other nominees on Friday, Sept. 7. DARBY IV NAMED CIAA FOOTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Quarterback John Darby IV (Fr./Detroit, MI) of Saint Augustine’s University was selected CIAA Football Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The fi rst-year signal-caller scored one of the Falcons’ two touchdowns against Division I FCS JacksonvilleUniversity on Saturday, Sept. 1. Darby crossed the goal line on a one-yard quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter. Darby rushed for 48 yards on eight carries after entering the game late in the third quarter. He also completed 3 of 6 pass attempts for 30 yards.

FALCONS THIRD IN THE SOUTHERN DIVISION PRESEASON RANKINGS Saint Augustine’s University was picked to fi nish third in the Southern Division and sixth overall in the conference during the 2018 Preseason CIAA Football Luncheon at the Sheraton Roanoke (Va.) Hotel in July. The league’s football coaches selected the predicted order of fi nish, which was announced at the luncheon. The Falcons bettered their 2017 preseason ranking of eighth in the CIAA.

FALCONS RETURN 53 LETTERMEN The Falcons bring back 53 student-athletes from last year’s squad which tied for the best conference mark in the Southern Division (5-2). They fi nished .500 or better (5-5) for the fi rst time since 2012. The trio of quarterback Darryl “D.J.” Johnson, tailbackJeremiah Miller and wide receiver Lenwood Joyner are expected to spearhead theoffense. Defensively, watch out for defensive linemen Tyler Trexler, Teoz Mauney and Keywan Morgan, linebackers Terry Warren and Dante Robinson and defensive backs Demonte Hines and Roy Garris.

JENKINS SELECTED NOMINEE FOR ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM Offensive tackle Zack Jenkins of Saint Augustine’s University was named a nominee for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in July. Jenkins was one of 169 college football student-athletes nominated for their off-the-fi eld contributions by sports information directors across the country. A special voting panel will announce the Good Works Team and an honorary head coach in September. Last season, Jenkins and his SAU teammates mentored 11-year-old Carter Pepper through Team IMPACT, a national non-profi t organization which connects children facing serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. A mock signing day was held for Pepper, who has a rare blood disorder, during halftime of a home football game on Sept. 30, 2017.In 2017, Jenkins was an All-CIAA Honorable Mention selection and named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Football Team.

MEET HEAD COACH TIM CHAVOUS Tim Chavous is in his third full season as Saint Augustine’s University head football coach. He was offi cially named head coach on Feb. 19, 2016. In 2017, Chavous led the Falcons to one of their best seasons in recent years. The Falcons tied for fi rst in the CIAA Southern Division for the fi rst time in recent memory and posted a .500 or better overall record for the fi rst time since 2012. Six SAU student-athletes earned All-CIAA honors including three on the fi rst team. Four Falcons landed on the All-CIAA Rookie Team and two Falcons made the Don Hanson All-Super Region squad. Two Falcons earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. That same season, the SAU football team became involved with the Team IMPACT program which matches courageous kids with life-threatening and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. In 2016, Chavous built the framework for a winning program on the fi eld in his fi rst full season as head coach. The Falcons were already successful in the classroom and the community. Twelve football student-athletes earned scholar-athlete status after maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher in the 2016-17 season. In 2015, Chavous coached the Falcons for eight games on an interim basis.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT Livingstone College, led by Head Coach Daryl Williams, returns 12 starters from last year’s squad. The Blue Bears are picked to fi nish last (sixth) in the Southern Division and 11th overall in the conference. Winless in ten games a year ago, the Blue Bears have already captured two victories in their fi rst four contests. LIvingstone ranks third in the CIAA in interceptions (5) and fourth in passing touchdowns (4). Williams is in his sixth season as head coach at Livingstone.
