Fall 2012 Course Evaluations Summary Report for Personal Enrichment and Continuing Education Courses

SUMMARY

In Fall 2012, students were asked to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of their

respective classes. Course evaluations are used so that the Division of Educational Outreach can

better address students’ needs and make curricular adjustments if needed. This report contains

the results of both Personal enrichment and Continuing Education classes. Descriptive results for

this report are divided into overarching specifications as noted by Personal Enrichment (i.e.,

Leisure Activities, Business and Finance, Language Arts, Health and Fitness, Home Computing)

and Continuing Education (i.e., Business and Industry, Computers and Technology, Legal)

course code prefixes, and according to survey items. In addition to descriptive stats, verbatim

responses to the open-ended responses are also included. Though the number of students that

completed the survey is reported, this does not imply it is equivalent to the number of students

that were actually enrolled in a course. Thus, a response rate is not available.

In sum, a total of 617 evaluations were completed for Personal Enrichment and 214 completed

for Continuing Education. The majority of Personal Enrichment evaluations came from students

in Leisure Activities classes (n= 236) while the majority of Continuing Education evaluations

came from Computers and Technology classes (n=119).

When students were asked how they heard about the classes, majority of Personal Enrichment

enrollees heard about them from a catalog mailed to their home/work (57.9%) while 42% of

Continuing Education attendants did so from the UNLV Continuing Education Website.

In addition, the average overall rating of the courses were 4.75 (Personal Enrichment) and 4.68

(Continuing Education), and the average rating for the instructors were 4.80 (Personal

Enrichment) and 4.75 (Continuing Education).

Lastly, students of both programs were asked to provide additional comments regarding their

educational experiences. Each program section contains a table with a generated thematic

category that students’ responses fell into. These codes are listed next to the corresponding

verbatim response. Responses varied, yet students offered ideas for class improvement or

logistical improvements, reported immense satisfaction with their instructor or knowledge

growth they received, emphasized particular course materials or more class time, or reported a

general yet positive comment.

Commentary during the bus rides between sites was helpful. Site

selection was excellent. Cost of trip is very reasonable.

Cooking portion at end of the class was AWESOME!

All the stays were great and the tours were too. Would not have

Logistics

A lot of one on one time and some people would miss out because

time would run out. Overall fun!

Could have been very satisfied except for heat which you can't help.

Did not enjoy walking downtown or the Hollyrock House location

so hot--no energy--but heat no fault of the instructors--just our bad

luck

For the most part I thought it was great. However, the driver could

have been better about picking us up and dropping us off where we

didn't have to walk as far. Also I felt picking places that were under

construction was not a good idea.

For the most part the trip was wonderful. However, I felt the bus

could have been kept cleaner (i.e. windshield, trash bag). Also, for

seniors we should either have rooms on ground floor or elevators.

Loved the trip subject material, but unfortunately the short suit was

transportation company--Bathroom issues among many others.

Otherwise, it was a great trip.

More time

Although the hat was fun to make, we weren't able to finish it in 2

classes. Either make a few more extra class sessions, or make

something easier that we can finish in 2 classes.

Needed more time

Lynne was great. I only wish the class met at least two more times

so we could really get the movements down pat.

Maybe I'm just a klutz--or maybe I need more hours of instruction

Amazingly great class and instructor. I look forward to every

Saturday for the class and has helped me put back in touch with my

artistic side.

I'm ready to plant, harvest and make potpourri!

I've been taking watercolors for stress relief, but also to learn the

medium. This class is very enjoyable!

Looking forward to trying to grow something and looking forward

to the herb class.

Revelation

Had a lot of experience and training in woodworking since high

school. Didn't think I would learn much, but I did.

I thought I knew how to paint with watercolors, but I found that

what I knew was not what I needed to know. I'm glad I decided to

take this course!! Great instructor!!

Covered a lot in a short time, but feel I now know what to work on

and where to start my efforts to draw.

I feel I can take an interesting photo. Now I can use other settings

instead of full auto.

I learned more than I expected to, and I feel like this class has

improved my skills greatly. I plan to take more classes with Gabbie,

and I’ve invited my mother to join me (she loves this kind of stuff.)

I'm taking two dog obedience classes at the same time. I've noticed

that my dog has learned more in this class than in the other dog

obedience class that we take at a pet store. Thank you.

Learned more than I thought I could. Teacher was great. This course

was really good for me. I was happy I took the course.

Suggestions for class

improvement

More courses during the morning

2 nights @ La Posada. Bring an astronomer and go to meteor crater

and talk about night sky. I miss having botanist along. LOVED the

railroad trip thru the back country. Would like to go on trips to

Moab & into New Mexico more.

Hollyhock House not good investment of our time. Maybe

Pasaclena, Rosewbow, would be better

Descents at church and Egypt Mus. Way, way, way too long. Would

rather have done train station. Hope there are more archi-type tours.

I would like more trips similar. Especially bus trips, I like someone

else doing the driving. Also, like travelling with a group. I would

like trips to LA clothing district and art attractions, to California

coast like Monterey, San Francisco, San Diego

It would be a good idea to have some crackers with the class. A

little impatient with students. Could have been more patient with a

student trying to open a bottle.

Just wish we could have gotten more for the money. Maybe the pet

video & also more fake dogs / cats. Hands on but not on stuffed

animals. Thanks.

Maybe provide a notebook, paper literature, book or DVD. End

course with pet CPR and first aid certificate. Thank you for being so

kind :)

Instructor was very knowledgeable about fall veg gardening. She

was able to answer a variety of gardening questions. Informative

handouts. Power point presentation was excellent.

Slide on projector screen flickers, it's distracting when looking

Much more participatory--good discussion both courses should

be offered as full day to go more in depth.

A lot of great information. Need more time.

Additional time need to cover entire book. Some areas felt

rushed. Those areas may not currently pertain, but could

possibly-later.

Excellent instructors--would suggest longer timeline for such

an important area.

Good course, extended course with exact same scope would be

much more fulfilling. If offered that is the course I would like

Great information--very user-friendly--Jessica covered much

more ground than expected and is a wonderful instructor--I

wish this was a daily course so I could learn more quickly! :)

If most classes run longer than the two-hour period, I would

This was more business orientated. I was interested in more

personal, maybe with second class I’ll see how to use this

personally.

Prereq. fulfillment Maybe ask for show of hands of who is familiar with a

stock/band discussion seemed like most participants already

had the basic knowledge. Could focus on other topics to save

time.

Suggestion for improvement

Great knowledge base! Good experience over the years. Fair

amount of repetition--could avoid that and use the extra time to

get through all the material. Could skip some of the slides.

Excellent job in putting binder of info together for us...

Suggestion--second part of notebook did not have reference

numbers on slides to follow on notebook and be able to make

notes. Too much material in too short a time.

This class should be marketed to younger people. Most of the

students were older, at or near retirement. The information

shared would benefit younger people and help them better

prepare for a financially sound retirement.

WORK PLACE BASED--was really looking or a more family

approached perspective.

A third Spanish class--maybe one focusing on verbs and conversing.

Another continuing course would be great!

I would like to see a third class offered if there is enough interest.

Needed info on how to set up story prior to writing. I.e. "storyboard"

This class answered some major questions I had on how prepared I

needed to be to begin my novel. Thank you for the class and the

inspiration.

Course material

Because this is a single class, include additional worksheets

Class and material was well presented and very enjoyable. Just wish it

was a little more demanding and covered more material. Professor

was excellent. Gracias!

I think should be recommended book, because "learn French the fast

and fun way" is not the best, especially for beginners. The instructor

needs to maybe repeat the sentences more in class as a teaching

methodology for learning.

More handouts would have been nice . . . The book may cause a

retraction of the above statement.

The only problem I see was with the bathroom. I happy with the way

instructor help in class, clear, and supporting. I would like to have

more practice papers, get a better book.

Engagement

I hope we can have more classmates.

I loved this course and the instructor. I enjoyed the learning

environment and the other students as well. I really enjoyed the last

day where we talked to each other and would love to see that

incorporated into more of the classes, maybe for15 min..

Our professor, Mrs.Orgill, was engaging, fun, and very helpful. I look

forward to continuing on to Spanish 2.

Professor Lipari provides an excellent learning environment. Her

knowledge of linguistics and her inclusion of history and culture make

the course very rich. I was inspired to learn.

Great course! It should be one week long.

I enjoyed this class. It was very fast paced but we spent time on group

activities that involved critical thinking and then analyzed what the

right direction was. I wish we would have covered the test questions

specifically. Great materials!

Of the entire course--which has been great, this has been incredibly

useful. I found some "low hanging fruit" I'd previously missed.

The course was very helpful. I think many casino businesses will

appreciate this course. Continuing Ed should advertise this class to the

casino industry.

Revelation I rarely date everything. Very satisfied-the course challenged my

assumptions and Dan made/allowed me to question myself throughout.

Suggestion for

improvement

I would have appreciated more case studies to practice on related to

each of our industries.

I would have liked spending more time on resolving issues with

problem employees as opposed to identifying problem employees.

In the first class, some students appeared baffled because they had zero

knowledge of sewing. Either the instructor should bring samples of

different kinds of fabric for illustration, or arrange a field trip to a

fabric store.

It was an informative class, but would have loved this class to be

divided into several sessions. This would develop more critical

thinking (case studies).

Class was a bit fast paced. Wish it went for 8-10 classes instead of just

6. Instructor is VERY knowledgeable in her field. The fast paced nature

was balanced nicely with her individualized attention to each student

while working on class projects.

formulas and functions.

Html level 1 was a pre-req, but I doubt many had it. Too many basic

questions that slowed class down considerably.

Classes went over allotted time. Need better time management in

lessons. Need to respond to emails faster/more often.

I really enjoyed both the illustrator and Photoshop classes,. Both

instructors were informative and patient. The only drawback being

people in the classes that didn't do work or homework really slowed

down the class and wasted time.

More hands on work

Prereq should include an established acct in different social media

venues. Recommend quick survey on first night to determine expertise--

don't "teach down" but encourage less experienced to do extra

homework and increase preparedness. Great class!

When say to the instructor I'm having trouble it would have been nice if

she would have come over to see what the problem was instead of

telling me to look at the screen. Jessica did not seem to want to see what

the students were doing or having a...

Wish there were more hands on activities.
