Working through Fanny Fern and Louisa May Alcott: A Pedagogical Approach to Women and Work , Nina Bannett, English Department, Pacific and Ancient Modern Language Association Conference, Seattle Washington Students in my women writer course are usually full-time workers, parents, and full-time students, three workers in one. They explore the theme of work by reading Fanny Fern’s “The Working Girls of New York” (1868) and Louisa May Alcott’s “How I Went Out to Service” (1874), and writing either an analytic paper or a short story in which Fern, Alcott, and the students themselves meet and discuss women and work in the 21st century. Students engage in dialogue, either via conventional textual analysis or their imaginations, incorporating their own experiences or those of a contemporary woman they know well as they examine similarities and differences between nineteenth-century and twenty-first century concepts of work. The results demonstrate a leap in students’ understanding of their own status as workers and of Fern and Alcott as professional writers. 2. The Rhetoric of Resiliency: Complicating the Core Values of the United States Army Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program, Jill Belli, English Department, Society for Utopian Studies Conference 2012, Toronto, Canada This year’s paper grows out of the work I have presented at SUS the past two years: positive psychology and happiness studies in dialogue with the utopian impulse (2010) and the emerging field of positive education, or curricula for teaching well-being (2011). This year I continue these conversations by examining the rhetorical and pedagogical functions of the United States Army Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) program. CSF is a mandatory positive psychology curriculum for soldiers aimed at decreasing Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and suicide, and increasing resiliency, psychological fitness, and strength in four areas: emotional, social, family, and spiritual. I will demonstrate CSF’s rhetoric and pedagogy straddle (often unsuccessfully and unconsciously) self-help and positive psychology discourses. In doing so, they showcase the competing tensions of individual improvement and social justice, apolitical progress and politically engaged action, and descriptive reporting and prescriptive advice. CSF shares in self-help and positive psychology’s mission of increasing flourishing by equipping our nation’s soldiers with decontextualized tools and strategies for coping with war without appropriately considering their relevance to the realities of life in (or post) combat. What makes CSF a particularly important site of inquiry is that it is “a hugely consequential national issue” (Quick 645). 1 The program affects individual soldiers, their families, and DA civilians as well as the international community impacted (directly or indirectly) by United States military actions. Additionally, CSF leaders, developers, and advocates have repeatedly announced a clear intention to roll out the program to other military branches 2 and to model future civilian programs on CSF, so both the stakes and the stakeholders go far beyond the soldiers for whom CSF is currently mandatory. 3. Superfluidity of dipole excitons in two layers of gapped grapheme, Oleg Berman, Physics Department, The 31 st International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors 2012 (ICPS 2012, Zurich, Switzerland We propose to observe superfluidity of quasi-two-dimensional dipole excitons in double-layer graphene in the presence of band gaps [1]. It is assumed that the electron is in one layer and the hole is in the other layer, including band gaps in each graphene sheet. hole and a Dirac electron. Secondly, we propose to observe Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) andsuperfluidity for a quasi-two-dimensional gas of such dipole excitons in double-layer graphene. Theenergy spectrumof the collective excitations, the sound spectrum, and the effective excitonmass arefunctions of the energy gaps, the density and the interlayer separation. We show that the effectiveexcitonmassincreaseswhenthetotalenergygapandinterlayerseparationincrease.Thedependenceoftheexcitonmassontheelectron-holeCoulombattractionandinterlayerdistancecomesfromtheDirac-like spectrumofelectronsandholes.Thesuperfluiddensityand temperatureof theKosterlitz-Thoulessphase transition are decreasing functions of the energy gaps as well as the interlayer separation, andtherefore,couldbecontrolledbytheseparameters

The advantageof observing the exciton superfluidity andBEC in graphene in comparisonwith these inCQW's isbasedonthe fact that theexcitonsuperfluidityandBEC ingraphenecanbecontrolledby thegapswhichdependondoping.Notethatweconsideredthesuperfluidity intwocases: i)anequilibriumsystem of electrons and holes created by the gates; ii) the electrons and holes created by the laserpumpingsuchthattheexcitonsareinthequasi-equilibriumthermodynamicalstate.

Sincetheinceptionoftheprogramin2008, a total of 45 undergraduate students of which 38 (84%) are considered underrepresentedminorities in STEM have finished or are continuing with their research or are pursuing their STEMendeavors.Theprogramiscomprisedofthethreeprimarycomponentsthatarehighlightedinfigure1.Thefirstcomponent,StructuredLearningEnvironments:PreparationandMentorship,providestheREUScholars with the skill sets necessary for proficiency in satellite and ground-based remote sensingresearch. The students are offered mini-courses in Geographic Information Systems, MATLAB, andRemoteSensing. Theyalsoparticipateinworkshopson theEthicsofResearch.EachREUstudent is amemberofateamthatconsistsof facultymentors,postdoctorate/graduatestudents,andhighschoolstudents.

The second component, Student Support and Safety Nets, provides undergraduates a learningenvironmentthatsupportstheminbecomingsuccessfulresearchers. SpecialnetworkingandBrownBagsessions,andanannualpicnicwithresearchscientistsareorganizedsothatREUScholarsareprovidedwith opportunities to expand their professional community. Graduate school support is provided byofferingfreeGraduateRecordExaminationpreparationcoursesandworkshopsonthegraduateschoolapplicationprocess. Additionally,studentsaresupportedbycollegecounselors.Manyofthestudentsarefirstgenerationcollegestudentswhooftenfaceissuesthatcanimpedetheiracademicprogress.The last component,Vision and Impetus for Advancement,allows REU Scholars to see themselves asSTEM scientists and workforce professionals. Exposure trips provide studentswith an opportunity tomeetscientistsworkinginindustry. Additionally,thestudentsalsopresenttheirresearchandparticipateat local,regional,andnationalconferences.Furthermore,sincemanyofthestudentswerenevergiventhechancetovisitSTEM-focusedindustriesandconferences.Theprogram,therefore,helpstobroadentheirSTEMexperience.Ofthe38REUScholars,16%(6)ofthemareingraduateschoolintheSTEMdisciplines,21%(8)ofthemhave graduatedand are in the STEMworkforce,and 63%(24)of them continue to pursue their STEMdegrees. Three of the students have won first place recognition for their research, and two of thestudentswillbeco-authorsfortwopeer-reviewpublicationsandonebookchapter.Additionally,surveyresultsshowthat84%ofthestudentparticipantsnowindicateinterestinpursuingMaster’sdegreesinSTEMand75%indicateinterestinpursuingdoctoraldegreesinSTEM.ThisprogramissupportedbyNSFREUgrant#1062934.

BroadeningAwarenessandParticipationintheGeosciencesAmongUnderrepresented

MinoritiesinSTEMReginaldBlake,JanetLiou-MarkNewYorkCityCollegeofTechnology

AnacuteSTEMcrisisexistsnationally,andtheproblemisevenmoredireamongthegeosciences.Sinceaboutthemiddleofthe lastcentury,fewerundergraduateandgraduatedegreeshavebeengrantedinthegeosciencesthaninanyotherSTEMfields.Tohelpinamelioratingthisgeoscienceplight,particularlyfromamongmembersof racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in STEM fields, the NewYork City College of Technology (City Tech) launched a vibrant geoscience program and convened acommunity of STEM students who are interested in learning about the geosciences. This programcreates and introduces geoscience knowledge and opportunities to a diverse undergraduate studentpopulationthatwasneverbeforeexposedtogeosciencecoursesatCityTech.Thisgeosciencesprojectis fundedbytheNSFOEDGprogram,and itbringsawareness,knowledge,andgeosciences opportunities to City Tech’s students in a variety of ways. Firstly, two new geosciencescourseshavebeen createdand introduced.One course is on EnvironmentalRemote Sensing, and theother course is an Introduction to the Physics of Natural Disasters. The Remote Sensing coursehighlights the physical and mathematical principlesunderlyingremotesensingtechniques.Itcoverstheradiativetransferequation,atmosphericsoundingtechniques,interferometricandlidarsystems,andanintroduction to image processing. Guest lecturers are invited to present their expertise on variousgeosciences topics. These sessions are open to all City Tech students, not just to thosestudentswhoenroll in the course. The Introduction to the Physics of Natural Disasters course is expected to beofferedin spring2013.Thishighlyrelevant,fundamentalcoursewillbeopentoall students,especiallyto non-sciencemajors. The course focuseson naturaldisasters, theprocesses that control them, andtheir devastatingimpacts tohuman life andstructures. Students willbe introduced tothe nature,causes, risks, effects, andprediction of natural disasters including earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis,landslides, subsidence, global climatechange,severeweather,coastalerosion,floods,massextinctions,wildfires,andmeteoroidimpacts.Inadditiontothebrandnewgeosciencecourseofferings,CityTechstudentsparticipateingeoscience -seminars, guest lectures, lecture series, and geoscience internship and fellowship workshops. Thestudentsalsoparticipateingeoscience exposure trips to NASA/GISS Columbia University, NOAA-CREST, and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Moreover, the undergrads are providedopportunitiesforpaidresearchinternshipsviatwoNSFgrants–NSFREUandNSFSTEP.Geoscienceprojectsarealsointegratedintocoursework,andstudentsmakegeosciencegroup project presentations in class. Students a l so pa r t i c i p a te in geosc i ence career andgraduate schoolworkshops.TheprogramalsocreatesgeosciencearticulationagreementswiththeCityCollegeofNewYork so that studentsatCityTechmaypursueBachelor'sandadvanceddegreesin thegeosciences.This program is supported by NSF OEDG grant#1108281.

ThispastOctober Iwasselectedtobeoneoftenjudgesforthe53rdAnnual InternationalAssociationofStudentClinicians/AmericanDentalAssociation(SCADA)AnnualBasicScienceResearchCompetition.Thejudgesmusthavesignificantresearchexperienceaswellasahistoryofcollaborationwithnationalfundingagencies and were selected through a peer review process. The Student Clinician Research Program(SCADA) began during the centennial of theADA inNewYork City in 1959, as a joint venture betweenDENTSPLY and the American Dental Association (ADA). The ADA is also the official host of the SCADAprogramateachannualsession.The awards program took place in San Francisco, California, during the 2012 ADA Annual Session.Approximately70studentcliniciansparticipated in thisyear’sprogramrepresenting researchconductedacross36countries.Over5,000studentsparticipateinthisprogramannually,includingstudentsfrom36countries. During the competition students present their research to the judges, their peers andconferenceattendeesincludingDentists,Hygienistsandresearchers,cliniciansanddentaleducators.Thescienceisrigorous,nationallyfunded,andcollaborativewithfacultymentoringandreflectstheemergingneedsofachangingpopulation.The judging occurred over the course of two days and culminated in an awards presentation SaturdayOctober20th.Thecompetitionwas intenseandrequired immediateknowledgeof the topic,accuracyofinformationandfluencyincommunication.Iamhonoredtohavebeenaskedtoparticipateasajudgeinthe2013ADAAnnualSessiontobeheldinNewOrleansinOctober.

Thedigitalhumanities—asaterm,andasanassociatedconstellationoftoolsandpractices—hasrecentlysurfaced as a site of convergence for interdisciplinary scholarship in the United States and beyond.Propelled by the ever increasing power of computing and grounded in the ongoing development of anetworkednewmedia,digitalhumanities scholarshiphas coalescedarounda shared setof values: thattheorycanbeengagedthroughpractice;thatscholarshipshouldbeopenandaccessibletoall;andthat,asBethany Nowviskie has argued, “the best new work is the work of many hands.” At the same time,American studies scholars have renewed the important work of investigating cultural and politicalformations, excavating power relations, and expanding scholarly inquiry to encompass the everyday asmuchastheexceptional.

Yet despite apparent similarities, conversations linking American studies’ tradition of interdisciplinaryrichnesstotheemergingfieldofthedigitalhumanitiesarestillinearlystages.EssaysbyTaraMcPherson,LisaNakamura,andWendyHKChun,amongothers,havebeguntoshownhowthesetwosetsofcriticalstances do not stand opposed, but are in fact very much intertwined—and might more productivelyinformeachotherifnotfortherigidinstitutionalboundariesanddepartmentalstructuresthatpresentlycircumscribe scholarly work.With this roundtable, we seek to open a new phase of the discussion, byovertlyexploringthepotentialforconnectionsbetweenAmericanstudiesandthedigitalhumanitiesinthecontextofanASAannualconference.

ABSTRACT

Educators seek to develop effective teachingmethodology. The psychologists seek to understandthe learning behavior. The emergence of research on metacognition offered a new perspective onlearning. According to researchon thecognitive science, students’ failure to learn canbeattributed tolack of metacognitive awareness in learning. Without self-awareness, one is unable to identify one’slearning deficiencies and thus unmotivated to change one’s learning behavior; learning becomes amechanical process leading to ineffective outcome and causing increased frustrations. Self-regulatedlearningisaproactivelearningwhichheightensself-awarenessandenhancesmotivation.

Themodelofself-regulatedlearning(SRL)consistsofthreecyclicalphases:theplanningphase,themonitoringphase, and the self-reflectingphase. Upon self-reflectionandadaptation tonew strategies,this process results in another cycle of planning,monitoring and self-reflecting. It is believed that self-regulatoryprocessescanbe learned. ThepresentersworkwithBarryZimmerman,JohnHudesman,andBert Flugman of the CUNY Graduate Center CASE (Center for Advanced Study in Education) and theirgraduate students in a project which designs and implements SRL activities in developmental mathcourses.

SRLactivitieshelpbuildspecificself-regulatoryskills. Goalsettingand learningstrategiesaregreatactivitiestostartoffthebeginningoftheSRLcycle.Theyarealsofundamentaltosuccessfullearning.Anactivityonself-efficacyjudgmentsprovidesinsightstoone’sbeliefofhis/hercapabilities. Thisbeliefcanbeadeterminingfactorwhetherastudentsucceedsorfailsatmath.Inself-reflection,studentsareaskedtoevaluatetheirprogressandtakecorrectiveactionsthroughthequizrevisionprocess.Thesecorrectiveactions,whichmayincludesettingadifferentgoalorincorporatingdifferentstrategies,areessentialintheSRLprocess.Theyallowonetolearnandimproveuponmistakes,andthusbringingtheSRLprocessbacktothebeginningofthecycle.

The was a presentation to radiologic technologists attending the New York State Society of RadiologicSciencesAnnualConferenceinCorning,NY.Themainobjectivesofthispresentationwereforparticipantstopossessageneralunderstandingoftheobeseandmorbidlyobesepatients.TheproblemofobesityintheUnitedStateswasaddressedandthegoalwasto identifyseveralaspectsoftheobeseandmorbidlyobeseindividualasapatient intheradiologydepartmentanddescribemethodsthatwouldallowforanunderstandingofhowtobestservethispopulation.Thechangesinequipmentusedinboththehospitalenvironment, in general, were discussed in addition to equipment changes specific to the radiology

Abstract:Theconceptofan“organizer”isbasictoembryology.Anorganizerisa portion of the embryo producing signals that lead to the creation of aatternedmaturestructurefromanembryonicprimordium.FibroblastGrowthFactor(FGF)8isamorphogenthatdispersesfromarostromedialsourceintheneocortical primordium (NP), forms a rostral to caudal (R/C) gradient, andregulates embryonic and neonatal R/C patterns of gene expression inneocortex. Whether FGF8 also has organizer activity that generates thepostnatal neocortical area map is uncertain. To test this possibility, newsources of FGF8 were introduced into the mouse NP with in uteromicroelectroporationatembryonicday(E)10.5,closetotheestimatedpeakofarea patterning. The problem of finding the wave functions andeigenenergiesof thebiexitonand triexciton formedby fourand sixparticles is the four-and six-bodyproblem,correspondingly. Suchconfined2Dquantumsystemshavebeenstudiedby severaldifferentwell-established methods: exact diagonalization techniques, stochastic variational method, Hartree–Fock approximations, andquantumMonteCarlo techniques,while for descriptionof triexciton stateswasused semi-empiricalpseudopotentialmany-body calculations [1].Weextend these studiesof thebiexcitonandtriexcitons inmagneticfield in2Dspaceusingthehyperspherical functions(HF)methodfollowRef.2.Weassumethattheelectronsandholesare interactedviamutualCoulombinteractionsamong charge carriers and theirmasses are equal. The system of four particles consisting from twoelectrons and holes confined by a parabolic well in a 2D quantum dot and interacting via Coulombpotential in amagnetic field are treated in the framework of theHFmethodby expanding thewavefunction in terms of the four-body HF and the hyperradial functions of noninteracting trapped fourparticles. In the case of the triexciton we using six-body HF and the hyperradial functions ofnoninteractingparabolicallytrappedsixparticles.Thesolutionsofthecorrespondinghyperradialequationsweexaminefortworegimes:theoscillatorlengthmuchgreater,andmuchlessthanthetwo-bodyCoulombinteractionscatteringlength.Forthecaseoflargeoscillatorlength,wefindanalyticalexpressionsfortheenergyandwavefunctionforthetrappedstates. ABSTRACTRecentlydistributedRamanamplificationhasbeenproposedasacandidatetechnologytoimprovethelossbudgetandextendthereachingigabitpassiveopticalnetworks(GPON).EmployingsuchtechnologyaGPONextensionof60-kmreachand1:64splitratiohasbeendemonstrated.Inthatexperiment,the1310-and1490-nmsignalswereamplifiedbyacounter-propagating1239-nmpumpanda1427-nmco-propagatingpump,respectively.A1397-nmpumpwouldprovidethepeakRamangainforthe1490-nmsignal;however,thestronginteractionbetweenitandthe1310-nmsignalwouldleadtoseveresignaldegradation.Byshiftingthepumpwavelengthto1427nm,thesignal-pumpinteractionwasreduced,andsowasthepumpingefficiency.Therefore,itisnecessarytooptimizethetradeoffbetweentheRamanpumpingefficiencyandthesystemperformanceforGPONreachextenders.

Inthispaper,weinvestigatenumericallytheeffectsofRamanpumpwavelengthallocationonthesystemperformanceandpumppowerrequirementemployingexperimentallymeasuredfibercharacteristics.Resultsshowthatwiththeoptimal1414-nmpumpwavelength,thepumppowersforthe1310-and1490-nmsignalscanbereducedby19%and22%,respectively.

The premise of investing in international assets is typically driven by the potential benefits that the

diversificationofferstoaglobal investor.Doesinternational investmentreallyofferdiversificationtoa

global investor? While this seems to be generally accepted in investment theory, a more in-depth

investigationinthedependencestructureprovidessomecompellingevidencethatthisisnotalwaysthe

case,especiallyduringtimesofdramaticdownturnsintheglobalfinancialmarketswhendiversification

ismostneeded.

The aim of this study is to estimate the tail dependence between stock index returns and foreign

exchangeratereturnsforfourEastAsianeconomies(Indonesia,SouthKorea,Singapore,andTaiwan).

Weapplytheconceptofcopulatomodelthedependencestructure,especiallyinthetailarea,between

thetworeturnsseriesforeachcountryunderexamination.WefirstfiltertherawreturnsusingAR(k)-

GARCH(p,q)-typemodels tomake sure the probability integral transforms are i.i.d. Uniform(0,1), and

thenwe fit the resulting series to the copulamodels.Ourmajor findings are, for themoreadvanced

country(Singapore),thereexistsneitherlowernoruppertaildependencebetweenstockindexreturns

andexchangeratereturnsforthesampleperiod.Forthethreeemergingmarkets,IndonesiaandSouth

Thispaperdiscussesthefindingsofouranalysisofthefactorscontributingtomortgagedefaultandforeclosure across themetropolitan areas of New York State in the years immediately preceding thecollapseofthehousingbubble.Ourapproachtothisstudyinvolvedmatchingthefullsetof2010NewYorkStatepre-foreclosure filings tohome loansoriginated from2004 through2008.Weconsider theimpactofabroadrangeofborrowervariables, including income, loanamount, interestrate,and loantype, aswell as largermacroeconomic variables such as the strength of job creation, unemploymentratesandhomepriceindices.Wealsoinvestigatetheroleofdiscriminatorylendingpracticesthatmayhavemeant thatBlackandLatinoborrowersweremore likely tohave received ‘highcost’ (subprime)loans.Inaseparatepaper(DoviakandMacDonald,2011),wedofindstrongevidenceofdiscriminatorylending practices, which confirms the findings of other studies. This same earlier investigation foundthatBlacksandLatinosreceivedadisproportionatelyhighshareofpre-foreclosurefilingnotices,whichappearedtoconfirmthepresenceofdisparitiesinlendingpractices.Tofurtherexaminethecorrelationbetweendiscriminatory lendingpatterns andhigher default rates, the current paper seeks to expanduponthepreviousstudiesbyincludingvariablesthatexaminethesignificanceofloan/valueratiosusingFHFA home price indices, home price index averages, and the number of commercial banks at thecensustractlevel,aswellasanidentificationoflendersbytype(conventionalorsubprime).

Iwas luckyenoughtohavethisprojectfall inmy lapwhenJackLynchproposed itaboutayearandahalfago.Hisidea,whichIquicklythoughtwasthemostbrilliantwayformetogettenure,wastolookatthehistoryanddevelopmentofEnglishandAmericandictionaries throughtheir frontmatter. I’d takethe front matter and determine what the editorial principles were and discuss them in their social,literary,andhistoricalcontexts.Becausethedictionaries,forthemostpart,areovertwohundredyearsold,therewouldnotbeaconcernaboutviolatingcopyright.Butastheyareownedbylibrariesandtoreproducethefrontmatterwouldcostquiteabitsothe idea is insteadtotranscribethem. Iwishwecould have facsimiles but it’s just impossible. Jack had already compiled a proposal and list of thedictionariessotheprocesswasmadeinfinitelyeasier.Ijusthadtostartwork.

BecauseIhaveahelpfulhusbandwhofoundanddidthedrudgeryofprintingthefrontmatterforme,Icouldfocusonunderstandingwhotheseearlylexicographerswereandwhatmotivatedthemtowrite their books—who theyhoped to reach andwhat theywanted to dowith the language theyorganized.So, thewaytheprojecthasbeguntodevelop is to first thinkabouthowI/weconsider thedictionary’seditorialprinciples,which is tosay,generally,notmuchatall. I’vebeenusingdictionarieslonger than I can remember and while I have distinct memories of reading the front matter ofencyclopediasIdonotremembereverlookingatdictionariesinthatway.Weprobablyallimagineusingadictionary tobe soobvious and straight-forward that it’s impossible to think that therewas a timewhen we didn’t have them or didn’t know how to use them. For thatmatter, when spelling wasn’tsomething thatwas rightorwrong. I think thatmostofuswhodon’t spell likemymother justuseadictionary—ora thesaurus—inanalphabeticalmanner:wehaveaword inmindandthenwe lookupthedefinitionofitbyitsapproximatespelling.Perhapsitmightbeusefultothinkofourcurrentuseofdictionaries as being inductive; that is, we have a word, an idea, and we confirm it by locating itsdefinitioninthedictionaryorunderstandingthewordslikeitinathesaurus.Theassumptionofourownliteracy is so high that we don’t imagine not knowing or having access towords and theirmeaning;dictionarieshave“always”beenthere,right?

Well,no,infacttheyhavenotalwaysbeenaround.It’struethattherehasbeensomeattemptto rein inand“fix” the language forcenturiesbut those textsbear little resemblance towhatweusetoday. Someof theearliest booksdevoted tounderstandingEnglish—it’s spelling and thewords thatwere not used in everyday life—were often lists ofwords.What is largely considered to be the firstdictionary is The Table Alphabeticall by Robert Cawdrey. That text was largely a list of what earlylexicographerscalled“hard”words,thosethatweretypicallyloansfromLatinandGreekorFrench.Thetitleitselfwassomethingnew,asCawdreymeanttoorganizewordsdifferentlyfromthefewreferencebooksonspellingorhardwordsthathadcomebefore.A“table,”accordingtotheOED,is“aschematicarrangement of information” that is organized in a “systematic arrangement of numbers, words,symbols, in a definite and compact form.” Cawdreywas a schoolmaster and his text is appropriately

pedagogic.Thewordsdefinedareindeeduncommon,scientific,or“hard”words.Thedefinitionswereterse, short, somewhat idiosyncratic—aswere thewordschosen. Juston the firstpageare“abash”—blush; “abba”—father; “abbesse”—comforters of others; “abecedarie”—the order of the letters. Thefirst dictionaries—and this is true until and including Johnson—used previous texts as their base andbuiltuponthemfortheirparticularprojects.

Regardingsomelaterdictionaries,Ibegantounderstandthatteachingaboutthelanguageandasserting authority was up for grabs. At that time, philology, grammar, and teaching were ratherdisorganized; publishing dictionaries or grammar books was increasingly common and authors whowereschoolmastersandministers felt thattheywerecapableofwritingdictionaries—merelybecausethey could, not necessarily because they knew how to. And because there was no such thing ascopyrighton the language, lexicographersbegan touseeachother’sword listsanddefinitions, takingadvantageofawide-openindustryandgreatneedforanswers.AfamousexampleisEdwardPhillips’sNewWorldofWords (1658)whoessentially rippedoffEdmundBlount’sGlossographia (1627).BlountretaliatedbywritinganotherbookcalledAWorldofErrors.ThelaterexampleisJohnson,whousedashissourcetextNathanielBailey’sUniversalEtymologicalDictionary.WhereasPhillipscalledBlount’stexthisownandcopied itwithonlya fewminorwordchanges, Johnson insteadusedBaileyasa startingpointandhistextbecamesodifferentandofsuchgreatermagnitudethattheycanhardlybethesame.But I have come to understand that during that period “borrowing” and adapting were considerednormalandacceptable,as longas thoseactivitieswerewithin reason, thenewer textsdid somethingadditional,orthepreviousauthorswerementioned.

Probably my favorite earlier dictionary was clearly written as a labor of love by an actualscientist, John Ray’s 1674 A Collection of English Words Not Generally Used. Known primarily as anaturalist and botanist, Ray also became fascinated by cataloging English words, words that wereconsidered provincial. He wrote one of the first studies of English dialectology, Collection of EnglishProverbs(1670;rev.1678)—incidentally,theproverb“theearlybirdcatcheththeworm”isfirstfoundinthis book. The front matter to the first edition of the dictionary does not say much about Ray’smethodologyorpurpose,otherthantomentionthathenoticedvariationsinEnglishwhileinhistravelsandthathecompiledwhattodaywouldbeconsideredregionalisms,andhebelievedhisbookwouldbeusefultopeopletravelingtofar-flungpartsofEngland.Raydiscusseswhatheincludedandwhy—hedidnotwishforthebooktobearegularglossary,asheacknowledgesthattherewerealreadyseveral;butthathewishedforthetexttobeacompilationofwordsandtermspeculiartocountiesoutsideLondon.Moreover,heexplicitlyexcludeswords fromLondonbecauseheasserted that theywouldmake theirwaytotheouterlandssoonenough.WhatmakesRay’sbookofproverbsandhisdictionaryimportanttothehistoryoflexicographyisnotsomuchthathewantedtowriteadefinitiveworkof“hard”wordsorto“fix”definitions,butthathestudiedthelanguageandcultureofthepeopleofEnglandmuchashediditsplantlife.Thesebooks,thus,arelikewiseimportantintermsofsociolinguisticsanddialectology;Raytookanaturalist’sviewoflanguage,lovinglycreatingaworkthatidentifiedandmarkedtermsandusesofindigenouslanguage.

Astheseventeenthcenturymovedintotheeighteenth,dictionariesreflectedevenmoresothenewinterest inthesciencesandcategorizingnewdiscoveries.Newfieldsofstudywereemerginganddictionaries likewise added hundreds of scientific words and these texts became more and morespecialized.By the first thirdof theeighteenth century,dictionariesofhardwordsbecamemoreandmorespecificand therewasan imperative to include justabouteveryhardword fromeveryobscurefieldorplace, it seemed.Forexample, JohnKersey’s1708DictionariumAnglo-Britannicum titlepagesclaimedtoinclude:“allsortsofdifficultwords,thatderivetheiroriginalfromotherancientandmodernlanguages; as also, of all terms relating to arts and sciences, both liberal andmechanical, viz divinity,

Forexample,themilitaryterm“facetotheleft”or“facetotheright”seemsmorelikeaphraseand“justifythelines”isonlyindicatedasbeingfrom“printing”andnotasaphrase.Otherwordsarenotmarked:“falconry”isonly “the Art ofmanaging Hawks and other Birds of Prey” instead of being indicated as a “Hunting-Term”or“Keel-raking”isdefinedas“aPunishmentus’datSea,whenaMalefactorisboundwithRopesanddrawnunderneath theShip’sKeel”andcouldhavebeenmarked“Sea-Term.”Thedictionaryalsousessometoolsforabridgement,suchaswhenheasksreaderstorefertootherliketerms:insteadofbeing redundant and defining first “Astronomical Quadrant” and then “Quadrant Astronomical” hewrites,“seeAstronomicalQuadrant.”Clearly,however,thetextswerebecomingsospecializedastobealmostridiculous.Somethingwasgoingtohavetogive,itseems.

ThedictionarybeforeJohnson’swhichseemedtoaddressthisover-relianceonhardandrarifiedwordsand terminologywasbyThomasDycheandWilliamPardon in1737. Theirdictionary seems toalmost thumb itsmetaphorical nose and hardwords and an educated readership. he dispenseswithetymology, becauseof its “Uselessness to thosepersons that the Sort of Books aremost helpful to.”DycheandPardonexplicitlytargetlesseducatedpeople,bothwomenandmen:heplacesaccentmarksonwordstohelpthose“ashavebutanimperfectIdea,oftheEnglishOrthography”;moreover,heaimstopreventhisreadersfromacquiringa“viciouspronunciation.”—anowveryobscureusage,“vicious”inthiscontextasitspecificallyreferstolanguageuseandwriting:“Impairedorspoiledbysomefault,flaw,blemish, or defect; faulty, defective, imperfect, bad; corrupt, impure, debased.” Later, hewrites that“TheWhole is intendedfortheInformationoftheUnlearned,andparticularlyrecommendedtothoseBoardingSchools,whereEnglishonlyistaught,asistheCasecommonlyamongtheLadies.”Itdoesnotappear that his readers are of such mean status as those of his Spelling Dictionary, but they areobviouslyyounganduntutored—andfemale,whowerebecomingararely-mentionedaudience.Infact,earlydictionaries,fromtheseventeenthcentury,werejustaslikelytodesireafemalereadershipasonecomposed of clerks or tradesmen. These texts targeted women as their primary audience. RobertCawdrey’sTableAlphabeticall(1604),Dunton'sTheLadiesDictionary(1694)andCockeram’sDictionary,Blount’sGlossographia,assertinthefrontmatterthatnotonlyweretheywritingforafemaleaudiencebuttheirapproachtounderstandingthesubtletiesofEnglishwasclaimedtobeofakindthatmotherswouldunderstandandpassontotheirchildreninthenurseryandordinaryspeakerswoulduse.Thus,thesetextswerenotonlyimportantinthehistoryoflexicographybuttheywereimportantresourcesinapplying theories of second language acquisition, pedagogy, and a certain kind of empowerment forwomenintheburgeoningfieldoflinguisticsandlexicography.Disappointingly,though,dictionariessoondroppedwomenasoneoftheirtargetedreadersandduringmostoftheseventeenthcentury,womenarementionedrarelyifever.JamesMurray,inaspeechaboutthedevelopmentofEnglishlexicography,says, “I suppose it is a truism, that the higher position now taken by English studies, is intimatelyinterwovenwiththeadvanceswhichhavebeenmadeduringthelastquarterofacenturyinthehighereducationofwomen....itisanoteworthyfact,thatthepreparationoftheseearlyseventeenthcenturyEnglishdictionarieswasalsolargelyduetoaconsiderationoftheeducationalwantsofwomen”butthat“all these references to the needs of women disappear from later editions and are wanting in later

dictionariesafter1660...”Murray,ifyoudon’tknow,reliedheavilyonhisdaughterandotherwomenwhoassistedhimincataloguingandarchivingthewordslipsthatlaterbecametheOED. So,I’matthepointwhereI’mstudyingJohnson’sPlanofaDictionary(1747)comparinghisPlanwithnotonlythefrontmatterofpreviousdictionariesbutalsoamgettingreadytolookathowhisPlanevolved when he came to actually write the thing almost ten years later. I’ve otten a great deal ofpleasure when comparing Johnson’s two documents and I say tomyself, “Well, X didn’t make it, orobviouslyY isnot going tohappen.” Johnson startedout likeother lexicographers,wanting to fix thelanguageandthenfound,asBaileydidearlyintheeighteenthcentury,thatlanguagehasamindofitsown.Baileyremindsreadersthatspeech,andtoa lesserextent,writingiswhatdifferentiateshumansfromanimals--but languageonlyenablespeople to communicatewhen it contracts intoaccurateandcorresponding words that have fixed meaning. He writes, “Words are those chanels by which theKnowledgeof Things is convey’d to ourUnderstandings: and therefore upon a rightApprehension ofthemdepends the Rectitude of ourNotions.” Bailey does not distinguish between spoken orwrittenspeech in this context, but to him themore “civilized”—though he reallymeans in this case, literatepeople—peoplesbenefitfromsettingdownwordstoclarifyandunderstandlanguageindictionaries.Healsowritesthat“allPolitenations”should“maketheStudyofLettersthefirstBusinessofLife”andlinksthe work of these nations—the education of its people—to the successful creation of dictionaries. Thiscontinuestobea fascinatingexperience,understandinghowtheEnglish languageand itsstudyreallyarelinkedwiththeriseofthemiddleclass(everybodysaysthat,butinthiscaseit’sreallytrue), how dictionaries were just one kind of conduct book, and while it seems as though sun oflexicography rose and set with Johnson, his book was just one of many and is actually indebted todozensofothersthatcamebeforehim.

In this paper, I investigate Greenpeace’s Save the Whales campaigns as intermediatedperformance. I believe these eco-activist performances—though played out on the high seas—nonetheless have direct relevance to examining current new media in theatrical performances. Inparticular, I consider immediacy and hypermediation, copy and original, as well as the (new) media

implications of the subversion of the cultural hegemony in this context. Utilizing Bolter and Grusin’sideasabout“immediacy”ascontrastedwith“hypermediation,”5wherethetransparencyofimmediacyis privileged over hypermediation, I question whether, especially in the context of eco-activism, the“realism” of immediate content is still (today) privileged over the self-referential reflexivity ofhypermediation. Iargue thatwearenotpassiveobserverswantingonly to“see” reality transparentlyreproduced—even innews-reelclips—but thathypermediationcallsparticularattention to itself in itsheighteningofthepossibilityfordirectengagement’sefficacy.Theprevious,assumed,dominanceoftheliveoriginaloverthecopynolongerexists.Astechnologygivesrisetomoreandmorecreativityin,forexample: drawing from the audience, communicating with the players, communicating with theaudience, and responding to the audience, the paradigm of the uni-directional communication (fromactor to audience) is broken down. We move to a more—improvisation-like—constant stream ofinformation that flows inamulti-directionalmanner. Eachparticipant, inhisorherownself-reflexiveparticipation,atonceupholdstheideaofcommunityintheirliminalon-linespace,butalsodeliberatelyandconsciouslytriestochangethefabricofthelargersocietyandinfluencetheculturalhegemony.

Born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada in 1933, Raymond Murray Schafer is a composer, librettist,educator,author,and“Soundscape”theorist.Iconsiderhistwelve-partoperaPatriaasaformof“eco-theatre.”Thismammothwork,writtenovera35yearperiod, reifies themesofCanadian identity, theidea of theNorth, site-specificity, and in particular eco-theology. Suzi Gablik,who profiles R.MurraySchaferinTheReenchantmentofArt,callsforareturntoamore“enchanted”wayoflifeandart,ratherthanthecurrentpatriarchal isolationemblematicoftheModern,ortheironicandparodicdistanceofthePost-Modern.Gablikwrites about ecstasy: “Ecstasy is an archetypal needof ourbeing, and ifwe

R.MurraySchaferhimselfbelievesourproblemswiththenaturalworldbeganthemomentwestopped seeing it as a spiritual place, and started seeing it as separate from thehumanworld and interms of the “resources” available to us for the harvesting. Schafer describes the purpose of art as:“First,exaltation.Tobehurledbeyondour limits intothecosmosofmagnificentforces,tofly intothebeamsoftheseforcesand ifweblink,tohaveoureyesandearsandsensestrippedopenagainstthemind’swilltothesensationalandthemiraculous.”7Schaferbelievesthatitisdifficultifnotimpossibletoindiscriminatelytakefromnatureifyouseeitasmiraculous.Youcancutdownatree,butyoumustgive something back, and thismakes it harder to randomly cut down awhole forest. In this paper, IexamineSchafer’sPatriaintermsoftheinterwoventhemesofCanadianidentity,theideaoftheNorth,site-specificity,andinparticulareco-theology.

ABSTRACT

Thispaper focuseson intersectionsof technologyanddevotion intheMiddleAges. Iam interested indiscoveringphenomenologicalrelationships,performativeinteractions,andritualalliancesbetweentheaffective lives of worshippers and moveable, prop-like saints. As I have argued elsewhere, medievalautomatons were primarily techno-mythological ideas, the distillation of mechanical processes andholiness, and by extension, tools for devotion. Perhaps because of the dominance of Christianity inmedieval Europe, the primary interpretive lens employed by cultural historians for studying liturgicalautomatons has been religious, while analyses of moveable objects as instruments of labor,functionality,andplayhavebeen lacking.While Iagreethatmedieval ritualobjectseffusedifferencesthatare incommensurablewithmodernperformanceobjects, Ibelievethat there isvalue inengagingcontemporarytheoriesofcognition,affect,andperformanceinordertoproduceafullerunderstandingoftherelationshipsbetweenmedievalsacredpuppetsandtheirwitnesses.

HereIarguethatanexperientialgapbetweenliturgicalpuppetsandautomatonsdidexistformedievalChristians,however, it is clear that thevastmajorityofmoveableobjectswerenotmeant todeceiveaudiences.Rather,theaffectiveresponsetothespectacleoftheatricaltechnologyenhancedthesenseofsacredpresencewithouteverbecomingsubsumedbydoctrinalnarrative.Bytakinga“thingcentric”perspective, sacred props are demystified. My performative analysis presents articulating objects asmulti-dimensional—aesthetic, functional, theatrical, and ludic. AbstractMobileaccessisgrowingatanacceleratedpace.AccordingtoPewInternetResearch,almosthalfofAmericanadultsaresmartphoneowners(Smith,2012).Tabletownershiphasalmostdoubledduringtheholidayseason,callingtoreachvisitorsusingthesedevices.Thispresentationexaminesthedeliveryofcontenttomobileusers,considerationsforadministratorsindevelopingthesesites,andtheplanninganddevelopmentofaneffectivemobilewebsite.UsingthemobilewebsiteoftheUrsulaC.SchwrinLibraryoftheNewYorkCityCollegeofTechnologyoftheCityUniversityofNewYorkasamodel,thedemonstrationwillexaminethesuccessesandfailuresinconstructingthissite.

Developingamobilewebsiteisnotassimpleasreiteratingadesktopdeviceoptimizedformobilevisitors.Implementingamobilepresencetakesthoughtfulconsiderationthataninstitutionmustmake,includingitsusers,selectingwhichservicestoprovide,andexistingtechnicalconcerns.Forexample,isthereauserdemandforamobilewebsite?Shouldmyinstitutionberepresentedbyamobileapplicationoramobilewebsite?Howshouldweregarddifferentdevices’interfaces?Aretheresourcesthatthelibraryprovidesavailableformobileconsumption?Thesequestionsandmoreareaddressedthroughoutthepresentation.

Theintendedaudienceofthispresentationincludesadministrators,developers,stakeholders,andanyoneconsideringtheuseofamobilewebsite.Participantswillleavethepresentationwithabroadoverviewofhowmobilewebsitescanrepresenttheirlibrariesorinstitutions,withuser-centereddesignandanalyticsbaseddecisionsbeingheavilyemphasized.Mobileintegrationwithexistingtechnology,suchascontentmanagementsystems,willbetouchedupon.Previousexperienceinmobileorwebdevelopmentisnotnecessarytounderstandthispresentation.
