HEALTHY LIVING TIPS From the Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic & Wellness Center at

GreenField Health & Rehabilitation Center

A recent study by researchers at the University of Louisville showed that exercise training BEFORE kneereplacement surgery helped joint replacement patients recover more quickly and easily thanpatients who underwent traditional preoperative care. eir "prehabilitation" program consistedof light resistance training, flexibility, step exercise and light walking. Our experience is thatpatients who participate in physical therapy services PRIOR TO joint replacement surgeryprogress faster and have a much easier time during their post-surgical rehabilitation. Our"prehabilitation" plan follows the same course of action as the study and adds an aquatic therapycomponent which provides results with much less stress and pain.

PREhabilitation can help you recover from surgery more rapidly and with less pain

Don’t let a fall ruin your holidaysAre you aware that falls are ranked the #1 cause of injury-related death for those over the age of 65? at, of

people who fall, 20-30% suffer moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures and head trauma that can reducemobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death? (Sterling 2001). And, thatfalls account for 30-40% of long-term care admissions?

Early identification of people at risk for falls can make a huge difference in a person’s qualityof life. Treating and correcting the major causes of falls – medication interactions, environmentalfactors (throw rugs, low lighting, etc.), and intrinsic factors (lack of sleep, vision problems, etc.) –can reduce the risk of falling by more than 30%. With some education about falls prevention, and practicing exercises and techniques especially designed to improve balance and stability, more

people than ever can continue to enjoy an active and fulfilling lifestyle.

NLHS GUILD

Over the past few years, the NLHS Guild has madesignificant differences in the lives of our residents. Inaddition to the ways they have traditionally contributed, such as providing gifts for Mother’s and Father’s Day,

flowers for worship services, hand-craftedbirthday and Christmas cards, napkins andsupplies for events, and much more, theyhave generously donated to several largerprojects. Most recently, they funded thenew private prayer chapel at GreenFieldCourt which is greatly appreciated byresidents and staff.

Current projects include assisting inmaking the lighting in the dining rooms and nursingstations at GHRC more inviting and renovating a sittingarea on D Wing at GHRC so it is a cozy place to visitand hold activities.
