Hand in Paw Programs Expand Thanks to Local Foundations

Since 2009, gener-ous annual grants from the Crippled Children’s Foundation have allowed Hand in Paw to strengthen and expand Petscrip-tion program servic-es for children and young adults. Grants sustain our ongoing

partnerships, such as our commitment to make a Therapy Team available for every child undergoing treatment at UAB’s Com-prehensive Cancer Center, and to serve in six therapy sessions weekly at the Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs. The grants also enable new partnerships: the Ronald McDonald House, RISE School at the Stallings Center, Adolescent Psych at UAB, and the Diabetes, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology Clinics at Children’s of Alabama, and many more.

The Crippled Children’s Foundation and its fundraising organi-zation, the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, are dedicated to the well-being of children. Their commitment to the care of our state’s children is tremendous – they have contributed more than seventeen million dollars to various charitable projects over the years. Hand in Paw is honored to be among them.

On Saturday, October 13th, the Monday Morning Quarter-back Club will hold Run the River, a Charity 5K Trail and Road Run. To learn more, visit www.facebook.com/RunTheRiver5k.

For ten consecutive years, the Hill Crest Foundation has gen-erously funded Hand in Paw’s Pawsitive Living™ program. Grants have been utilized to recruit and train new volunteers to serve in the program, to deliver program-specific orienta-tions and to recruit additional Pawsitive Living™ facilitators. A larger corps of trained volunteers and facilitators in turn enabled Hand in Paw to activate partnerships with new agen-cies, and increase the number of 12-week terms delivered an-nually. Funding has also allowed us to pilot and explore spin-off and sister programs, such as Pawsitive Times for Moms and Kids, and more recently, the popular No More Bullies! program. Partnerships made possible by the Hill Crest Foun-dation include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham, Glenwood Autism and Behavioral Health Center, Alabama Youth Homes, Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services, and Grace House.

The Hill Crest Foun-dation was cre-ated in 1967 to raise funds for ex-panding Hill Crest Hospital. After the sale of the hospi-tal in 1983, the foundation began using the funds it

received from the sale to make grants, with an emphasis on healthcare. Hand in Paw is honored to be part of the work that the Foundation makes possible.

An old African proverb states, if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. As Thanksgiving approaches, we are grateful for the thousands of you who make Hand in Paw possible. The volunteers who so selflessly give their time and their hearts to others. The doctors, nurses, teach-ers, social workers and therapists who go the extra mile for those in their care by welcoming our teams and working to incorporate our programs into their busy days. The donors who are passionate about the power of people and animals working together. The advocates who never miss the opportunity to ask, “Have you heard about Hand in Paw?” We can never say “thank you” enough.

We are still reeling from an action-packed summer. Our 12th Annual Picasso Pets was a night to remember. To the volunteers, presenters, sponsors, auction item donors, muses, members of our Board of Directors, Advisory Council, and SoHIP Young Leaders Council, and all of the many attendees – we are

grateful beyond words. It was a joy to see the faces of first-time guests meeting Pet Partners. It was an honor to debut a video in which our volunteers shared their experiences of serving and also paid tribute to you for your support. If you haven’t seen it – it’s a must-watch, and can be viewed on www.youtube.com/HandinPawAL.

It’s even more important to note that programs and services don’t slow down in the summertime. At the new Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children, Hand in Paw Therapy Teams were there on week one, delivering comfort and encouragement. Tuscaloosa area teams began visits to the RISE School at the Stallings Center, which serves children with special needs ages 0-5. Two dedicated groups of volunteers, led by two phenom-enal facilitators, worked with ten boys and eight girls for twelve weeks at the Higdon Hill Group Home at Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services. Our teams even made dozens of special visits – starting with stress-relief events on two college campuses in May, visiting students at Better Basics’ Camp HOPE and Tuxedo Terrace’s Camp Cool, spending time with the girls at Grace House, and speaking to families at the Hoover Library, to name a few. Believe it or not, we have even more in store for fall!

The greatest testament comes from those whose lives our teams touch. A volunteer recently told me about a card she received after visiting an elementary school with her therapy dog. A little boy wrote, “There should be Hand in Paw everywhere.” Funny, that’s our vision, too. We can do it, together. Please give to Hand in Paw this fall, so that in 2013 we can all go very, very far.

TEAMWORK Greg & Ivan KennedyI first met Ivan on a beach down in Pensacola, FL right after Hurricane Ivan. He was about 4 to 6 months old, just the cutest puppy in the whole world. I figure he had just survived the hurricane; he had some cuts on his face and some abrasions around his collar. He did not have any tags or a ID chip but was someone’s puppy. So we tried to find the owners but most all communication was down right after the storm. We never found the owners and he has been my best friend ever since.

We have done lots of things together, several rounds of obedience training, agility dog stuff and Hand in Paw training. We go to the local driving range and golf course where he is pretty popular.

We have been doing HIP for about 4 years now. My wife and I have always do-nated to HIP and when I got Ivan I thought he would be perfect for the job. At first I never thought we would qualify, but after some time and training we finally did. We enjoyed the obedience training and it was something we could do together.

Ivan and I mostly get to go to the Exceptional Foundation and we love doing it. I work a lot out of town and travel all the time and my job is very stressful. I try to take every other Monday at home so we can do The Exceptional Foundation visits most of the time. I always thought Ivan would be a great therapy dog because he always seeks out people and gets them to pet him, he is a good people trainer, and when people do pet him it makes them smile.

Ivan’s favorite things to do are take long walks, chase squirrels, fetch sticks, he loves to swim and lay on the back deck just watching the birds. He is a boy dog and loves to get dirty and run around and smell things. He also has his own Facebook page and posts to that every once in a while.

We have had many memorable visits and they are the best part of my week. I remember one where we interacted with a young boy, he was reluctant to pet Ivan and didn’t interact with me at all. I gave him a brush and he brushed Ivan for a long time. He had a great smile on his face the whole time. His Mom came in and noticed. She took him to the car and came back in to tell me that he had not really interacted with anyone for a long time and how pleased she was that he did with Ivan and was relaxed and smiling. It was great!

Tarrant City Schools invited Hand in Paw to visit their 21st Century Com-munity Learning Center after-school program. On May 8th, HIP Therapy Teams, Therapy Visit Assistants, and staff spoke with students about the many ways that therapy animals help people. They also demonstrated safe interactions with pets and discussed pet care. Students enjoyed meeting Kosmo and Missile and learning about Hand in Paw’s work.

In addition, the entire student bodies of both Tarrant Elementary School and Tarrant Intermediate School took part in a service project for Hand in Paw, in which for every quarter donated to HIP, they placed a paw print on the school wall. Students donated a total of 2,134 quarters - which meant $533.50 for Hand in Paw! We are so grateful for this donation, which will help strengthen our programs.

These amazing little girls, Margo, Thalia, Ella Grace, and Adah, came to the Hand in Paw office to present us with $400 that they raised. They had a joint 10th birthday party and didn’t want presents, they wanted people to donate money to HIP!! We had a great time meeting them, and they especially loved meeting Vicki and Buddy, one of our Pet Partner teams!

Louise and Brewster Make a Difference

Congratulations to Louise Abroms and her Pet Partner Brewster for winning NBC Channel 13’s Making a Dif-ference Award. The news station surprised her with the award while she was on a visit to UAB’s Comprehen-sive Cancer Center. One of the patients that Louise and Brewster had met nominated them for bringing such joy to them!

I can honestly say that I have never been more impressed with an organization than I have been with Hand in Paw. The leaders of this organization do an impeccable job of training their volunteers and matching them with the perfect site based on their skills, interests and abilities. The volunteers are extremely dedicated and passionate about their work.

I began working with Hand in Paw just over three years ago when one of their many dedicated volunteers described the work that she and her dog, Sally, were doing with the organization. She was incredibly passionate about the mission of Hand in Paw, but what she failed to mention is that their work was nothing short of miraculous! I quickly learned this lesson! I will never forget the first day that my very first Hand in Paw team came to work with me at Oak Mountain Elementary. After introducing one of my students to the team, I sat at my desk with tears streaming down my face as I watched a student that I had never seen smile absolutely come alive. After only a few minutes, this scruffy, lovable terrier was able to break down walls that the student’s teachers, parents, friends and I had been working to overcome for months. This student who refused to read and complete his

homework grew from begging to stay home from school every day to looking forward to going to school each day and getting in trouble for staying up too late reading!

The impact that Hand in Paw has had on the students that they have served at OMES is indescribable. I choose students who are struggling with a variety of issues ranging from poor self-esteem, grief and difficult family situations to anxiety, autism and behavior issues to participate in the Sit, Stay, Read! program. The effectiveness of the program has been well documented with improved grades, improved attendance and positive reports from parents and teachers. In addition to helping the students that my Hand in Paw teams work with directly, all of our students have benefitted from their presence at our school! The teams have become much like mascots for OMES! As our professional learning communities discuss the climate and culture of our school, Hand in Paw is always at the top of our list of things that have positively impacted our climate and culture!

I could go on for days describing the countless success stories that I have personally witnessed at OMES, but my eyes fill with tears as I think of the miraculous work that they have done with my students. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an incredible organization. I can honestly say that they have made a significant difference in the lives of each of the students with whom they have worked.

-Hayden Belisle, M.Ed., ALCCounselor, Oak Mountain Elementary

Students at Oak Mountain Elementary are often surprised to round a corner and find themselves literally eye to eye with a large bundle of furry curls. Then they realize that it’s just Simon paying one of his weekly visits. Simon knows where he’s supposed to go and he leads his partner, “Miss Margie,” to the counselor’s classroom. Hayden Belisle selects children that need a special friend to spend time with Simon. These students enjoy petting Simon, brushing him, and reading to him. Since Simon’s big ears make him a great listener, they often just have a nice conversation about what-ever is important that particular day. Simon makes his friends feel special as he paws at their hand when they stop petting him or when he puts his head in their lap. He often gets smiles from the child that’s reluctant to give them. He loves all the attention that he gets at school, especially the hugs!

Hand in Paw’s Annual Fundraiser Helps Organization Grow

Tweety Lasker AwardThis beautiful bronze statue is presented at Picasso Pets to an organization that partners with Hand in Paw to serve the community with excellence. This year Tricia Kirk, Executive Director of The Exceptional Foundation, accepted the award on the organization’s behalf. The Exceptional Foundation and Hand in Paw have partnered for more than ten years. Hand in Paw’s Petscription program is a per-fect fit for The Exceptional Foundation’s mission to provide social growth and rec-reational opportunities to enhance the quality of life for exceptional individuals. This honor is given in memory of Tweety, Katie & Jim Lasker’s beloved greyhound. We are very grateful to the Laskers for their dedication to Hand in Paw’s mission.

Hand in Paw held their 12th annual fundraising event, Pi-casso Pets on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2012 at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center. It was raining cats and dogs in the grand entryway and ball-room, with paper rain drops and umbrellas!

The evening began with an opportunity to browse the Pi-casso Pets silent auction ac-companied by an open bar and appetizers. Guests also had the opportinity to meet some of our Therapy Teams and learn about what they do. Following the silent auc-tion was a seated dinner, featuring a three-course meal. Presentations were made by those whose lives have greatly been enhanced by the positive effects of Hand in Paw’s Animal-Assisted Ther-apy Teams. The night’s main event took place with the live auction, including one-of-a-kind pet paintings. No one left this spectacular event without being overwhelmed by how much good Hand in Paw does in our community.

Many thanks to the people and their pets who particpated this year as presenters: Louise & Jim Abroms with Brewster, Ragan & Brad Cain with Judge & Gypsy, Crispin & James Cantrell with Dudley, Cindy & John Grant with Sprite, Joy & Matt Minner with Dallas, Sandra Storm with Max, Holly Terrell with Boudreaux, and Beverly Virciglio with Charlie & Gracie. We would also like to extend a huge thanks to the artists that donated their time and creativity to help our organization raise money: Bo Berry, Beth Bradley, Lead Dodd, Linda Ellen Price, Lila Graves, Bob McKenna, and Chris Rogers.

Proceeds from Picasso Pets directly benefit Hand in Paw in carrying out their mission.

As I was approaching retirement, I set as a goal to become a volunteer for Hand in Paw, either with or without my Shih Tzu, Dusty. At the time, Dusty was 8 years old and I wasn’t sure he would qualify to become a Pet Partner. He proved that an older dog could be taught new tricks -- he surprised me then and continues to surprise me two years later.

Our visits to UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Center mean so much to us. One darling little girl was completing her radiation treatments and remarked, “I’m glad I’m finishing my treatments and want my cancer to be gone, but I’m going to really miss seeing all of the dogs.” What a testimony to what we do. We do make a difference. In our visits to UAB Center for Palliative Care, Dusty is invited into the hospital beds of people who are gravely ill. We have seen some real miracles as a snuggle from Dusty makes both the patients and their families forget for a few minutes how dire their situations are. Volunteering with Hand in Paw has changed my life for the better.

I have been a Pet Partner since 2009. I was proud that this May, Nico (my younger Boston Terrier) and I officially became a pet partner team. We signed up for Pawsitive Living at Higdon Hill. I am always amazed at how much the kids (and Pet Partner teams too) get out of the program. This seemed to be a great environment for Nico. There was one girl in particular that bonded with him. She sat next to him each week and was very attentive to anything he might need. See-ing how much the dogs help the kids in the Pawsitive Living program is why I love volunteering for HIP. You get to witness Pawsitive change in action.

Nico and I also visited the Exceptional Foundation for the first time recently. Ludo (my other Boston Terrier) and I have been going there for a while. One of the girls who has a Boston Terrier always enjoys visiting with Ludo and was excited to hear that Nico might be coming soon. When I brought Nico in for the first time, she told me that she had prayed that he would pass and was so happy he could make it! I nearly cried. The bond that the kids make with the dogs is amazing and it is hard to find words to express how much they get out of each visit. Nico and I look forward to many more visits to the Exceptional Foundation! - Andrea Siegel, Ludo & NicoHand in Paw Pet Partner Team
