Annual Christmas Open House December 13, 2014

It’s that time of year again when we ask for all the crafty people and great bakers to help with our annual C h r i s t m a s O p e n House, bake sale, craft sale and raffle to be held on Saturday December 13, 2014 from noon till 4:00pm.We are looking for homemade crafts, table decorations, ornaments etc. for the craft sale. (Please no TV’s, computers, electrical items.) Yummy baked goods, like cookies, breads, rolls, candies, pies, coffee cakes are always welcome for our bake sale. Remember to mark your bake goods if it contains “nuts” because some people have allergies. Perishable items can be brought to the shelter a day or two before the sale or that day.Santa will be here from noon till 4:00pm. to listen to the Christmas wishes of the young and old. Free photo with Santa will be available for the children. (No Pets Please!)Refreshments such as popcorn, soda, coffee and donut holes for your tummy at no charge will be served.Raffle drawing will be at 4:00pm that day by Santa and you need not be present to win. We have Great Prizes! Tickets are $1.00 each and will be sold at the open house and are also available now at the shelter and our clinic. If you would like to help sell some tickets on your own please stop by the shelter between the hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm Monday thru Saturday to pick up some tickets. All ticket sellers are welcome!Remember that day we also need volunteers to work the day of Open House. If you can help please call the shelter 586-731-9210 for the available times. Education Area year round with the pictures of pets. During the year we call it our family tree, however during the Christmas Season it is all decorated with Christmas Ornaments and any new photos that we receive. Send a clear photo of your pet along with a $5.00 donation and we will attach to it an ornament and hang it on our “Holiday Tree”. These photos will stay on our tree year-round catching the attention of visitors as they tour our shelter. Your donation will help to spread the holiday spirit. True Members of the FamilyHuman beings acquire pets for all sorts of reasons and under

all kinds of circumstances. Whether finding a stray kitten in an empty field or rescuing an old terrier from an animal shelter, it’s impossible to not end up affected by the pets of our lives in one way or another.

It was the summer of 1995. Mr. and Mrs. Moore had recently moved into their first home, and were very busy unpacking boxes, arranging furniture, and running errands. When they stopped at a neighborhood garage sale while out and about, the last thing they expected was to find a cardboard box - full of young kittens - sitting among the clutter and knick-knacks. The side of the box read FREE.

Mrs. Moore picked up the smallest of the kittens, a black-and-white little creature, and simply could not bring herself to put him down. It was evident from his big, yellow eyes that he had been crying. Without discussion, the couple knew they were meant to take the kitten home. And so they did.

Named after a character from the popular TV show Seinfeld, George would go on to mature into a noble housecat; a true member of his human family. His adoptive parents went on to have five children, and George served as a loyal companion to all, teaching them to be responsible and compassionate, watching over their playdates, story times, and Christmas mornings.

For fifteen years, the cardboard box kitten would earn his keep a thousand times over, leaving behind a legacy with his human family. But not all pets come into their owners’ lives unexpectedly; sometimes a lot of planning is involved, as in the case of Elliot, a Green-rumped parrotlet whose adoption had been much more anticipated.

Hailie Tackett, an animal-loving f ifteen-year-old, had obtained her parents’ permission and had for months been saving her allowance money for the purchase of her very own bird. After having read all of the books in the library on the different bird species, Hailie settled on adopting a Green-rumped parrotlet because of their compact size and lovable personalities.

For the first two weeks in his new home, Hailie’s baby bird sat quietly in the center of his cage, not wanting to do much of anything. Hailie tried to take him out to play, but he would step away from the open cage door, asserting his desire for solitude. Discouraged at her new pet’s behavior, Hailie began to worry that something could be wrong with him.

Two months later, Hailie’s fears were confirmed when Elliot suffered a stroke, followed by a seizure - and then several more seizures. It was a very difficult series of events for the young girl to watch. The veterinarian told her that Elliot’s stroke had caused permanent paralysis of his legs and feet, and that he may never be mobile again.

Determined to give Elliot the best life he could possibly have, Hailie began conducting her own physical therapy sessions with

her bird, gently massaging the muscles of his fragile legs. Not wanting him to feel immobilized, she allowed his wings to grow out and began training him to fly on command.

Today, Elliot is a skilled and confident flier. Hailie taught him to maneuver in flight with safety - and he taught Hailie the power of patience, perseverance, and love. Hailie also learned that life doesn’t always work out as planned; her vision of a pet hadn’t been one of a paralyzed bird, but when asked about Elliot now, she said she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hi! My name is Princess and I am a 2 year old Shih Tzu.

I have an amazing life thanks to the Humane Society of

Macomb, I now have a momma, daddy, grandma and grandpa.

I was born in January 2012 to a Shih Tzu breeder. As they

began to sell my brothers and sisters they told me that I was

not going to a family because I was sick. I did not understand

what this meant. I was so scared. That is when I arrived at the

Humane Society. My breeder told me that he was not going to

pay for my surgery because he would not make any money off

of me. He made me very sad. All I wanted was a family.

The amazing people at the Humane Society took me in and

performed my surgery. I overheard them say they did not think

that I would make it because I was so small but my vet told me

she was not going to give up on me. I lived there with my new friends in recovery. They took such good care of

me. Once I was feeling better they brought me out to play. They even brought me treats. They gave me my first

real toy, a little stuffed bunny, which I still have.

On May 3, 2012, they told me I was going up for adoption. I was nervous, but my friends promised me a good

home with someone who would love me. This was when I met my momma and daddy. They came in almost

immediately. As soon as my momma held me I knew I had found my forever home.

Because of the Humane Society of Macomb I am alive, healthy, and have the best home any puppy could ever

want. Thank you for saving my life and helping me find my family. My momma and daddy tell me I am their

daughter and they would not trade me for the world. That makes me feel good. Thank you to all of my friends at

the Humane Society, I do not know where I would be today if it wasn’t for you!

Many of us pet owners give in to the adorable, longing face of our beloved pet begging for people food. How much harm could a scrap or two of people food here and there, do?

The truth is, quite a bit of harm can result from feeding certain people food to pets. There are many foods that are common in the average household that can cause a major threat to our furry friends. Some of these foods are ingredients often found in everyday meals. In order to keep your pet healthy and safe, it is important to be aware of the foods that can be toxic to your pet, and help your pet stay away from them.

In the next column is a list of some of the foods that are very detrimental to the health of you pet, some of which are quite surprising! For example, salt is a staple of mealtime and when consumed in large amounts can cause your pet to get sodium ion poisoning.

The above foods are not only harmful when eaten by themselves. They have same effect when used as an ingredient in prepared foods. It’s easy to pass your pooch some potato chips and pretzels when partaking in a snack, though those foods often contain large amounts of salt.

Being mindful of what we give our pets to eat will help them be happy and healthy companions.

with a donation of 165.00 each. Maximum of three lines 12 characters per line including spaces and punctuation. Pathway paver surrounds our new gazebo near the horse corral and front landscaping. Perhaps you’d like to remember a pet, friend, relative etc. Donation for paver money goes to help all homeless and unwanted pets at our shelter.

Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask...

To a poor and lonely stray I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name.

I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more that I can stand.”

Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him.

This is the only thing I can give.

Winterize Your Pet!1. With the onset of winter precautions

should be taken to protect your Pets!2. Do not let your indoor pet(s) outside

for long periods of time. Shorthaired breeds like Doberman’s, Chihuahuas, Terriers etc., may need coats or sweaters. Every pet is at risk of frostbite. Most common areas are ear tips, feet & and tips of tails.

3. Outdoor pet(s) should be brought inside the house or have access to a heated garage when the weather gets severely cold. If that's not possible make sure the doghouse is well built, insulated, slanted roof with an elevated floor. Dry straw is excellent bedding material. Doors should be covered with a flap to prevent drafts from the wind. The door should not face the North. Southeast is the best. The size of the doghouse is very important. A house that is too large for your dog will not keep him warm.

He needs a house that he can stand up in, turn around and lay down. His body heat will help keep him warm along with the bedding etc.

4. Outside dogs need more calories in the winter so they can build up fat, which acts as insulation. He needs 2-3 times more calories. Check the dog food bag to increase his food or contact your local vet for more information.

5. Fresh water must be provided several times a day. Pet stores do sell heated dog bowls.

6. Check your pets feet for slush or salt that may stay in their pads and cause irritation.

7. Cats should be kept indoors or in a heated garage that has built in hutches or in a well kept used barn. Cats will seek heat and sometimes sleep in the motor of your car. Be aware of paw prints on your car hood. It's possible that there's a cat getting warm

by your engine. Tap on the hood or honk your horn to scare the cat away.

8. By using common sense in the cold months our pets will be safe. Remember that the Michigan Law requires proper shelter for your pet(s) 24 hour per day for the weather, which includes sun, heat, rain, snow, wind etc.

9. Our shelter (during the winter months) gives away a FREE bag of straw for the outside dog. Straw will be available at our shelter after November 1st.
