Solo and Ensemble 2015-2016

Who? All instrumentalists are required to perform in solo and ensemble. Here are the requirements: Wind Symphony: MUST perform a grade 3 solo or higher. Ensembles are optional Symphonic Band: Must perform in an ensemble (assigned by directors). Solos are optional Jazz Ensemble: Must perform a grade 3 solo or higher. Ensembles are optional Percussion Ensemble: Must perform a grade 3 solo or higher. Ensembles are optional What? Solo and ensemble is a great opportunity for students to showcase their talents. Students will play for a state certified judge and a professional on their instrument. The student will receive feedback and a rating from the judge. Solo and ensemble is more about the journey than the product. Each student will grow as a musician through the entire process. Where? District 14 MPA will take place at John I Leonard High School When? February 5th or 6th, 2016 Accompanists Each soloist has either been assigned an accompanist or they have selected their own. Each student with an accompanist will be required to practice with their accompanist at least two times before the actual performance. Additional rehearsals will need to be arranged with you and your accompanist. Accompanists typically range from $40-$50 for two rehearsals and a performance. Students will start rehearsing with accompanists when we return from the holiday break starting in January. Grading Each student will be required to perform their solo (without piano accompaniment) and/or ensemble for a grade during the first week back to school. Students will also be required to play their solo in its entirety (with accompanist if needed) for a final performance grade within the weeks leading into solo and ensemble. Private lessons It is HIGHLY RECCOMENDED that students play for a private lessons teacher. This will give them one-on-one instruction from a professional on their instrument. This is a highly valuable experience and one that should be sought after by ALL students. Students should talk with their private lessons teacher about what selection they should play for solo and ensemble. Smart Music Students are encouraged to get the Smart Music program. You can go to www.smartmusic.com to find out about the program. It’s a great tool to help you prepare for S&E. Smart Music has recordings of many of the pieces as well as the piano accompaniment. This way students can play along with the accompaniment on smart music. Smart Music will also record and give you feedback on your performance. I will go over how to use the program in class in the next few weeks.
