$100,000 has been raised in the2015 We Care To make you betterCampaign which will be used to purchase a variety of much neededitems to enhance the comfort, careand safety of patients touching virtually every department.

The SMH is known for its exceptionalEmergency Room (ER) service. Over$20,000 has been earmarked for theER this year including a Cardiac UltraSound Probe ($8,250), an accessorywhich will maximize the use of the ultrasound equipment bought previ-ously by the Foundation. The probe, which can be used at the bedside, will allow a better quality view of theheart, making diagnosis quicker andimproving management of the treat-ment provided. Also on the list for theER is a reclining exam/procedureschair offering medical staff access to their patient from both sides, andan inflatable air mattress systemincreasing ease, comfort and safetywhen transferring patients between a bed and a stretcher designedspecifically to reduce staff injuries.

More than $36,000 will be investedon the Brunswick Unit, a 21 bed inpatient unit that provides neces-sary treatment for diseases such ascancer or severe episodes of illnesssuch as a stroke. The Unit’s goal is toensure patients, mainly seniors, arehealthy and stable prior to being discharged. Items to be purchased include two pressure mattresses forprevention and treatment of ulcers, areclining geriatric chair which easilyre-positions when sitting and helpspatients with dementia, a bariatricwheelchair for obese patients, 23 bedside stands and overhead tables, two booster seats, oxygenstands for wheelchairs, and a TVfor the patient lounge.

Imaging (radiology) Department. Local residents aren’t required totravel to Moncton for this testing as the information from the Holtermonitor is able to be downloaded at SMH and read by cardiologists atThe Moncton Hospital.

The impact that these purchases willhave on patients is significant.

Occupational Therapy will receive aspecialized wheelchair at a cost of$8,600. This particular wheelchair canbe tilted back, allowing gravity to assist the patient to stay upright in the chair should they have weaktrunk control, as often occurs whensomeone has a stroke, for example.

A barrier-free examination tabledesigned to make it easier to treatpatients will replace an aging one inthe Ambulatory Care Clinic (wherecare is delivered on an out-patientbasis). In addition, much neededmodular seating will be purchased forthe waiting area. The new seating willbe washable, which is important forinfection control, as well as offerspace for obese patients. Over$21,000 will be invested in the Ambulatory Care Clinic.

Cardiac Services will be provided witha Holter monitor, which continuallytracks a patient’s heart rhythm for a24 hour period, and a blood pressuremonitor. There are currently fourHolter and blood pressure monitors. The new equipment will allow two additional patients per week to haveaccess to these heart services whichare provided in the Diagnostic
