Prior to the Met opera’s opening night premiere of director Bartlett sher’s new production of giuseppe Verdi’s Otello, Met general manager Peter Gelb leads a conversation with sher about his vision for this masterful shakespeare adaptation. artists from the cast perform excerpts from the score.

Balanchine’s Harlequinadecommedia dell’arte ExploredSUn AnD MOn, SEPT 20 AnD 21, 7 PM george Balanchine choreographed his acclaimed Harlequinade in the spirit of Marius Petipa, in whose Les Millions d’Harlequinade he danced as a student. Join new York city Ballet dancers and Pacific northwest Ballet education programs manager and dance scholar Doug Fullington in an exploration of Balanchine’s Harlequinade, a masterful two-act ballet in the commedia dell’arte style. Excerpts are performed prior to the october new york city Ballet performances, and Fullington moderates the discussion.this Works & Process program is made possible with the assistance of stuart coleman and Meryl Rosofsky.

Washington national opera Appomattox with Philip glassMOn, OcT 5, 7 PM

Set as the american civil War draws to a close, with ulysses s. grant issuing abraham lincoln’s terms of surrender to Robert E. lee, then flashing forward to Martin luther king Jr. struggling to negotiate voting rights with lyndon B. Johnson, composer Philip glass’s revised opera will mark 50 years since the Voting Rights act and 150 years since the end of the civil War. Prior to the premiere, excerpts are performed, and Washington national opera artistic director Francesca Zambello moderates a discussion with director tazewell thompson and glass.

Preview Balletcollective’s nyu skirball center season with founder, choreographer and new york city Ballet dancer troy schumacher. see excerpts from a new work by schumacher and Balletcollective resident composer ellis Ludwig-Leone, inspired by commissioned photographs by Paul maffi, and selections from a new schumacher male duet, with a score by noW Ensemble artistic director mark Dancigers, sparked by commissioned Dafy hagai photographs. Dancers harrison coll, Lauren king, claire kretzschmar, ashley Laracey, meagan mann, David Prottas, and taylor stanley perform, accompanied by musical ensemble hotel elefant.

Donald Byrd & charles Wuorinen MOn, nOv 2, 7 PM

Pianist Peter serkin and an ensemble of 15 musicians, conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer charles Wuorinen, perform the new york premiere of Wuorinen’s Megalith. spectrum Dance theater performs choreographer Donald Byrd’s Septet, set to Wuorinen’s Second String Quartet performed by the Fred sherry Quartet. Wuorinen and Byrd participate in a discussion.Megalith is commissioned by the tanglewood Music center (for its 75th anniversary), the st. Paul chamber orchestra, and Works & Process at the guggenheim.Enter via the ramp at 88th st and 5th ave.

HagoromoMOn, OcT 26, 7 PM

Prior to the world premiere at BaM, as part of the 2015 next Wave Festival, the creative forces behind Hagoromo—dancers Wendy Whelan and Jock soto, director David michalek, choreographer David neumann, composer nathan Davis, and puppeteer chris Green—discuss reimagining the Japanese noh theater classic. Excerpts are performed by Whelan and soto, tenor Peter tantsits, and international contemporary ensemble (ice).

Playwrights HorizonsMarjorie Prime with Jordan HarrisonMOn, nOv 9, 7 PM

it’s the age of artificial intelligence, and 86-year-old Marjorie—a jumble of disparate, fading memories—has a handsome new companion who’s programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember, and what would we forget, if given the chance? in this new play—a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama—playwright Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits of what technology can replace. the cast performs scenes, and the creative team participates in a moderated discussion.

Prior to the new york premiere at the Joyce theater, excerpts from Intensio, featuring four innovative new works by choreographers alexander Ekman, gregory Dolbashian, Jorma Elo, and annabelle lopez ochoa, along with other works, are performed. Dancing are Daniil simkin and fellow american Ballet theatre stars isabella Boylston, alexandre hammoudi, Blaine hoven, calvin royal iii, hee seo, cassandra trenary, and James Whiteside, as well as les Ballets Jazz de Montréal’s céline cassone.Intensio is a Joyce theater and sunny artist Management Production. this Works & Process program is made possible with the assistance of anh-tuyet nguyen and Robert Pollock.

Juilliard Dance students perform excerpts from new works by four innovative choreographers prior to their premiere. helen simoneau’s piece features first-year dancers; aszure Barton’s second-year dancers; Zvi Gotheiner’s third-year dancers; and kyle abraham’s fourth-year dancers. Juilliard Dance artistic director Lawrence rhodes discusses the creative process with the choreographers.
