In 2006 Darryl graduated from the Nunavut Teacher Education Program, along with other Inuit from the same community, and he has been teaching at the Levi Angmak Elementary School since. Besides his career as a teacher, he enjoys dog mushing and has been an active participant in Hudson Bay Quests and other dog team races between Rankin and Arviat. He started raising dogs as a young man, picking up interest from his late brother-in-law, Bernie Sulurayok. As a young boy, he often went hunting for seals at the floe edge with his brother-in-law. He started raising dogs on his own as a young man, spending quality time with them and bonding strongly, gaining respect. Today he is still actively mushing and hopes to pass it on to his twin boys.

Deborah Kigjugalik Webster grew up in Baker Lake, Nunavut, where she loved to learn about her Inuit culture and heritage. She has a degree in Anthropology from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and works as an Inuit heritage researcher and author. The lack of published children’s literature featuring Inuit content compelled Deborah to write this story for her daughters, Sonja Akilak and Nicole Amaruq. Reading and making up stories with her daughters when they were young was a magical time in Deborah’s life, and she took inspiration from their vivid imaginations and sense of wonderment and excitement. It is Deborah’s hope that children and adults of all cultures will enjoy Akilak’s Adventure.

Charlene Chua worked as a web designer, senior graphic designer, web producer, and interactive project manager before she decided to pursue illustration as a career. Her work has appeared in American Illustration, Spectrum, and SILA Illustration West, as well as several art books. She illustrated the children’s picture books Julie Black Belt: The Kung Fu Chronicles and Julie Black Belt: The Belt of Fire. She lives in Toronto.

Even though she at first feels that she will never be able to reach her destination, she keeps her grandmother’s assurance that her “destination is not running away; it will be reached eventually” in mind and ends up enjoying the journey that at first seemed so daunting.

As Owl swoops down and blocks the entrance to a lemming den, he is sure

This fun and cheeky tale is accompanied by full-colour still photographs of illustrated characters on a hand-built set.

ISBN: 978-1-77227-121-8 | November 2016 | $13.95 | 6” x 9” | 200 pages | 20 black-and-white line drawings | Young adult novel | Paperback | English | Ages 12+

A coming-of-age story that follows a young shaman named Pitu as he learns to use his

powers and ultimately finds himself lost in the world of the spirits. After a strange and violent blizzard leaves Pitu stranded on the sea ice, without his dog team or any weapons to defend himself, he soon realizes that he is no longer in the world that he once knew. The storm has carried him into the world of the spirits, a world populated with terrifying creatures—black wolves with red eyes, ravenous and constantly stalking him, and water-dwelling creatures that want nothing more than to snatch him and pull him into the frigid ocean through an ice crack—as well as beings less frightening, but equally as incredible, such as a lone giant who can carry Pitu in the palm of her hand and keeps caribou and polar bears as pets. After stumbling upon a fellow shaman who has been trapped in the spirit world for many years, Pitu must master all of his shamanic powers to make his way back to the world of the living, to his family, and to the girl that he loves.

Are you sure? Inuit aren't sure, and their stories have been around for a long time.

In the old days, it was easy to change shape. Animals lived like people.Their fur and feathers were like coats made of magic. But it was hard to

change colour. Sometimes, animals got bored. Everyone needs colour in life.

In the world of Inuit traditional stories, animals and humans are not such different creatures and animals often have much to teach humans about

the world. In The Orphan and the Polar Bear, a little orphan who has

been abandoned on the sea ice by a group of cruel hunters is discovered and adopted by a polar bear elder. While living in

the bear’s village, the orphan learns many lessons about survival and his own place in the world.

Retold for contemporary audiences by Inuit storyteller Sakiasi Qaunaq and illustrated by

internationally renowned artist Eva Widermann, The Orphan and

the Polar Bear makes this beautiful traditional tale

widely accessible for the first time.
