LWML Convention June 22-25, 2017
Albuquerque, New Mexico
District Retreat September 29-October 1, 2017
Gig Harbor, Washington
God’s Gifts for God’s Glory! What a wonderful
way to end one biennium and start a new one with our district convention this past June in Everett.
The convention opened with a wonderful and uplifting worship service Friday evening where Rev. Paul Linnemann, President of The Lutheran
Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) Northwest District, encouraged us to use God’s gifts and to be a blessing to others. Our LWML President Patti Ross

shared LWML news as well as encouraged us to be active Lutheran
Women in Mission. Donna Pyle, Bible study leader and keynote speaker, led us to take a closer look at the convention theme scripture
reference of 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 which focused on the gifts given by God, and how we can use them to share Jesus’ love with others and to not be a “mossybutt.” Our Mites In Action speakers gave convention
attendees a glimpse of their ministry, sharing how our mites had helped them spread the love of Jesus. We enjoyed the entertainment of gifted guitarist, Enrique Henao, Saturday night following the banquet.
More information about the convention can be found inside this edition of the Evergreen Echoes or from your society delegate or zone president.
Make plans to attend your zone rally in September or October. More information will be sent to you by your zone. Bring a friend!
Mark your calendars and plan to attend the following LWML events in 2017: LWML Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, June 22-25. A
convention in our area of the United States only happens once every eight years. At the convention, we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of LWML and marking the 500th anniversary of the
Reformation. District Retreat at Best Western Wesley Inn in Gig Harbor,
Washington, September 29-October 1.
Continue to use your time and talent at church, at work, at home, and in the LWML as together we work for God’s purpose.
Serving Christ With You,
Marie

DISTRICT COUNSELOR Rev. Daniel Freeman, Junior Pastoral Counselor–West
Dear Sisters in Christ,
It was at once humbling and an honor to be elected to serve you as the junior pastoral counselor for the Washington-Alaska District of the LWML. I am a Pacific Northwesterner through and through, having been born and raised in the mid Willamette Valley (Corvallis and Albany, Oregon). I attended Concordia College (it wasn’t a university, yet) in Portland where I met my wife, Dawn (an eastern Washingtonian). We have four children: Hannah, a freshman at Concordia University, Mequon, Wisconsin; Rachel, a junior at W.F. West High School in Chehalis (but attending Centralia College as a full-time Running Start student); Jonah, a freshman at W.F. West High School; and Abigail, a sixth grader at Chehalis Middle School. When I can find the time, I enjoy the outdoors: fishing, hunting deer and elk, and cycling. After graduating from Concordia, Portland, I attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. I served my vicarage in Highland, Indiana (basically an Indiana suburb of Chicago, Illinois). From the seminary, the Lord of the Church called me to serve His people in a dual parish at Three Forks and Ennis, Montana. After three years in Montana (and on the same day our son, Jonah, was born), I received the call to serve the saints at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chehalis, Washington. We have been here for 14 years. I look forward to serving alongside of the women of the LWML. Our Lord Jesus has used this organization in many and various ways, great and small, in support of the proclamation of His Gospel, the good news of Christ crucified and risen again which is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith” (Romans 1:16-17). I am eager to join you as we strive to help bring that blessed truth to the world.
In Christ, Pastor Freeman

At the 30th Biennial Convention, delegates approved a mite goal of $170,000. Sixteen mission grants were adopted for a total of $90,000.
Giving a start for the new biennium with $3,041.63 in contributions, the mite dance was so fun and a great success. Thank you, Joyce Berger, for arranging the great music.
And thank you all for your generous hearts in support of the mission grants.
Thank you so much for your encouragement and support these past four years. I am humbled, honored and truly blessed to have served with you. Please join me in welcoming Cristina McAnulty as your new Vice President of Gospel Outreach.

Mission Servants Committee Marilee Griffith, Immediate Past Chairman
What a wonderful time we had at the district convention in Everett in June!! I would like to express my congratulations to the host zones. They did a wonderful job and were very helpful! We hosted two Love in Action Servant Events and Gifts from the Heart “ingathering” for Lutheran Community Services Northwest (LCSNW). We were really busy on Friday, trying to keep the events going while other volunteers watched the ingathering contributions pour in. Thanks go out to my committee members, Betty and Chris, for helping to keep on top of the ingathering as well as assisting with the servant events. We succeeded in making 45 school kits and 18 fleece blankets. Three of those blankets were finished after the reception on Friday evening; because the ladies were enjoying themselves so much they didn’t want to quit until the fleece was gone!! We sent five blankets to Oasis Teen Center in Mount Vernon and twelve blankets were given to Debra Bordsen of Snohomish County Domestic Violence Center. The final blanket was awarded to our keynote speaker, Donna Pyle, as a memento of her visit to the Northwest. Gifts from the Heart for LCSNW Refugee Resettlement Program brought in a phenomenal amount of contributions that we sorted, counted, and repacked for efficient use of containers and space. It was a big job, but we had special helpers drop in and make quick work of it. Our teens—Cheyanne, Patience, and Fridah—manned the room on Saturday morning, and by mid-morning they had the last of the articles counted and packed. This was important, because we had to move everything at noon to vacate the room for the hotel. Betty, Mavis, and Mary were also very helpful with the move! On Sunday morning, LCSNW brought a van with two refugees and their director, John Forseth, to pick up all the goods. We counted everything, but a few donations came in through Sunday morning. The original count is as follows: Cleaning supplies–318; Linens and other household goods–234; Baby items–113; Toiletries–836; Clothing–38 boxes/bags, two boxes shoes, and four men’s suits; Kitchen supplies–23; Children’s toys–40. There were also cash and gift cards given totaling $350. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all who donated goods and helped us out at convention. YOU are the ones who made this effort the success that it was!! God’s Gifts for God’s Glory was the perfect theme for this convention!! Praise Him for His bountiful blessings!

Praise the Lord for His grace and blessings since 1980 as our LWML Washington-Alaska District has been supporting our seminary and other church-worker students with their tuition through our grants and scholarships. Thank you women of the LWML Washington-Alaska District! I have received many thanks for our work from the students and others whom we have aided. Our Scholarship Fund supports the undergraduate students and is funded through donations and memorials. Please remember to keep giving to this fund. Thank you for continuing to support the District Scholarship and Seminary Students grant through your mites. The priority of these funds is to benefit the seminary students. Thank you for your prayers and contributions to both the mites and the Scholarship Fund. Any of these gifts are to be sent to the LWML Washington-Alaska District Financial Secretary. I am pleased to name the recipients for our scholarships this coming school year of 2016-2017. Our seminary students are Evan Scamman, Albino Kong, Rick McCafferty, and Michele Musegades. Evan is continuing at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He will do his vicarage this year. Albino Kong and Rick McCafferty are working on their EIIT (Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology) program at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Michele Musegades will begin studies in the Deaconess program there. The other student beginning her undergraduate studies at Concordia University in Irvine, California, is Rachel Brandmire. Her desire is eventually to become a Deaconess. She is starting her freshman year. The amounts that we will be distributing to the students are as follows: $8,000 to be given to the seminary students through the mites, and $1,850 to be given to our undergraduate student from the Scholarship Fund. The total for distribution will be $9,850 for this next school year of 2016-2017. They appreciate all that you are doing to encourage them in their endeavors. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers this year. Also, if you know anyone who could qualify next year for a scholarship or seminary grant, please encourage them to apply. The deadline in the spring for applications is March 15, 2017. Applications may be found on our website www.wa-aklwml.org after November. Again, thank you for being women of faith and mission.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Heart to Heart Sisters Committee Allison Akahoshi, Chairman
Now that the 2016 LWML Washington-Alaska District Convention in Everett is a memory, it’s time to reflect on our experience with the four ladies who came to see just exactly what LWML was all about. The four ladies were from Barbados, Ethiopia, and two from South Sudan. We were all blessed as they shared their similarities and differences. The session began with information on what LWML is all about. We then had a Bible study from the Fall 2015 Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly by Marilyn McClure and Melissa Salomon. After lunch we began our participation with convention activities starting with attending the First Timers Welcome. Each morning we gathered for a continental breakfast in the Heart to Heart Sisters’ suite. On Friday, LWML President Patti Ross and District President Marie Chow joined us for lunch and the new Heart to Heart Sisters were presented with their pins. Friday night we enjoyed fellowship and lots of laughs at a pizza party. Saturday found us as regular convention attendees, viewing the exhibits, shopping at the LWML Store and enjoying fellowship with other attendees. Saturday afternoon, LCMS Northwest District President Paul Linnemann and his wife met with us for a time of sharing information and fellowship. One of the major blessings was watching the Heart to Heart Sisters’ interaction among themselves. You wouldn’t have guessed that they were from countries on different sides of the world! What an example of what can happen when Jesus is the center of your relationships. Some comments from one of the Heart to Heart Sisters were especially encouraging: “I personally wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all you did to make my first LWML Washington-Alaska Convention inspirational and appealing enough to have me start thinking about the next one.” “The convention was truly a blessing and I am asking God to show me what my purpose is and what my gifts are, so that I can use them to his honor and glory.” A special thank you to Massie Hicks and Aletha Voges for their hard work in helping to create a meaningful experience for the new Heart to Heart Sisters. Now, time now to start thinking about 2018…

Young Women Committee Heather Selset, Immediate Past Chairman
We were
regardless of age. LWML President Patti Ross pinned the YWRs and gave them some inspiring words. We
also had a chance to receive encouragement from LCMS Northwest District President Rev. Paul Linnemann.
As a service project, the YWRs cut out and strung together loops from plastic bags, which will be
crocheted into mats for the homeless by LWML-ers from Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Spokane,
Washington.
One of the YWRs, Allison Smith, had crocheted a beautiful purple and white bag. The bag was auctioned
off during the Saturday night dinner, raising $220 for mites. On Sunday, the YWRs presented the morning
devotion, with each discussing their thoughts on how God wants them to use their gifts in the future.
Additionally, Chairman Heather had crocheted a purple throw as motivation for women to take a YWR
National Convention application to give to young women in their congregations. On Sunday morning,
MaryLynn Huntwork was chosen as the winner of the throw via name draw.
It was such a blessing to spend time with these young women during the convention, and we ask you to
join us in praying for them (and all young women in mission) as they grow in their faith and service to God.
We were blessed to have five Young Woman Representatives
(YWRs) at the district convention. They participated in several Bible
studies together, discussing finding blessings out of stressful times
and realizing where God wants us to use the gifts He has given us,

Public Relations Director Janet Rust
What a wonderful convention! Worship was moving, speakers were fulfilling, displays and exhibits were informing, hotel was accommodating, business was conducted smoothly, mission grants were selected, and new officers were elected. Thank you, Convention Committee and all who participated in the convention, using your gifts for God’s glory. Thanks to the women who served on the Public Relations Committee in the past biennium and those newly elected to serve in this next 2016-2018 biennium. Thank you to the LWML members who willingly helped with 2014-2016 issues of the Evergreen Echoes: Melissa Swanberg, LeeAnn Tibbals, Sandi Schauer, Donna Chow, and Elizabeth Cook. I am delighted that we have a new Evergreen Echoes Editor, Lisa Davis, from the East Inland Empire Zone, who attends Trinity, a small white church with a red roof, in Grangeville, Idaho. Lisa taught language arts for 20 years and has done her church newsletter for the past 10 years. Please send your future articles for the Evergreen Echoes to [email protected] for Lisa. Julie Onken, our Webmaster for six years, along with her technical assistants, her husband Kurt in the early years and Chris Coerber, will hand over their duties to our new Webmaster Joyce Berger, who has been diligently working to update our LWML Washington-Alaska District website (www.wa-aklwml.org) with new officers, forms, bylaws, mission grants, etc. that come with the new biennium. Joyce, who is from the Mount Baker Zone and Shepherd of the Hills in Snohomish and who recently served as a district committee member, began the transition with Julie around six months ago. We appreciate the years Julie has contributed to the website and appreciate Joyce’s willingness to work on this important communication and resource for the District. Be an informed member by reading and sharing the publications made available to you—the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly, the Evergreen Echoes, and the district website. Also pay close attention to the information from your zone officers who receive information and forms to share with you of upcoming scholarships, mission grants goals and accomplishments, bylaws, procedures, and registrations for conventions and retreats. There is information for each member in these publications to encourage the use of “God’s Gifts for God’s Glory.”

Prosser’s Messiah ladies hosted the Inter-Valley Zone Joyshop luncheon on April 30, 2016. Each
society provided fleece and two blankets were tied while visiting during registration time. These
blankets as well as numerous ingathering items for Personal Care kits and a love offering will be
donated to Lutheran World Relief.
Pastor Kraig Gilkey led us in a Holy Communion service. “Gifted for Service” (1 Peter 4:10-11) was
the theme for a Bible study led by the zone officers and for a skit presented by the Messiah ladies. We
enjoyed District President Marie Chow’s presence to deliver her report.
