Baylor Sport Management has recently partnered with IMG College, the United States’ largest col-legiate sports marketing company representing more than 200 of the nation’s top collegiate pro-grams. Matt Iazzetti, the General Manager, over-sees obtaining corporate sponsorships for Baylor athletics and executing their activations: stadium signage, on field/court promotions, radio sports, social media, and televi-sion. This partnership creates a graduate assistantship for the program. Austen Reed, second year student, is a property assistant for Baylor IMG and assists Baylor’s Partner Service Coordinator, Ashley Broome, in executing activations. The Sport Management program currently boasts partner-ships with seven entities, providing opportunities for twen-ty-six students. These positions allow students real-world experience they would not otherwise receive in the class-room.

The Applied Sports Management Asso-ciation has selected Baylor’s Sport Man-agement program to host their 2018 Con-ference, marking the first in program his-tory. Set for February 15-17, 2018, the con-ference will host students, young profes-sionals, academicians, and industry prac-titioners from across the region. 2018 will be the first time the conference has been hosted outside of an executive board member’s institution. Program graduate assistants, Amy Gaston and Tess Moore, with the assistance of Dr. Jeffery Petersen, began the bid writing process in the fall of 2016 focusing on the strengths of Baylor’s location and relationships with Sport Management programs in Texas. Laura Hatfield, ASMA board president, shared the board’s reasoning in awarding Baylor the bid. “The Applied Sport Man-agement Association was thrilled to receive the bid from Baylor University to host the 2018 ASMA Conference. The tremendous facilities, desirable location, and links to numerous sport manage-ment programs in Texas were all factors that contributed to their selection to host. Further, there was a clear commitment from the sport management faculty and graduate students to make the confer-ence a success. Through the planning process to date, it is clear that the partner-ship with Baylor will provide for expanded programming as we seek to engage aca-demics, industry professionals, and stu-dents.”

The most significant expansion of pro-gramming will come in the six practi-tioner panels with topics ranging from women in sport to fundraising to sport business analytics. Leading industry pro-fessionals from the Big XII Conference, College Football Playoffs, the Alamo Bowl, IMG, and many others will share their expertise with attendees during an hour long Q+A session. In addition to the panels, the conference will feature research presentations from a number of institutions, an undergraduate case study competition, teaching sessions, poster presentations, and a keynote at Saturday’s awards luncheon. "The Baylor Sport Management Program is energized at the opportunity to host the 2018 ASMA conference. The event gives us a chance to showcase our program and students as well as the university as a whole,” says Dr. Mar Magnusen, Associ-ate Professor of Sport Management and conference director. “The upcoming event already has piqued the interest of sport management students and sport practitioners throughout the country and there is a lot to be excited for in the upcoming ASAMA conference at Baylor."Registration for the conference will open later this fall and more information can be found on the Sport Management website. For questions regarding the conference or on ways to get involved, please con-tact Amy Gaston, Conference Organizing Chair, at [email protected].

Baylor’s Sport Management Association is the Sport Management program’s offi-cial organization created for graduate students to network and build relationships with leading professionals in the sport industry in a way classroom attendance cannot. Most recently, our students visited the Big XII Conference Office and the Conference USA Office. These visits allowed the students to meet with conference leaders who discussed their specific roles and provided career advice. The Sport Management Association also features guest speakers every month, and the stu-dents most recently heard from Diana Day and Rick Cooper through video confer-ence, as well as Mack Rhoades, who spoke to the students in person. Diana Day, a sports agent at Landmark Sports Agency, discussed her career and her involve-

ment in brokering endorsement deal for some of her clients. Rick Cooper spoke to SMA about his career as a former men’s basketball coach and his recent transition to Athletic Director of Wayland Baptist, and specifically how his background as a coach helped him transition to his role as an athletic director. Mack Rhoades, Baylor’s athletic director, spoke about managing expecta-tions as an AD and provided the stu-dents with insight into what it takes to be an AD at a Power 5 school.

The culmination of over two years of concentrat-ed effort produced the first textbook from a Baylor Sport Management faculty member. In the summer of 2017, Kendall Hunt Publishing released the first edition of Facility and Event Management: Applications in Sport, featuring Dr. Jeffrey Petersen as the lead author of this new 672 page resource. This text provides a balanced approach between the theoretical and research-based approaches of academia and the pragmatic best practices of pro-fessionals in the field. The textbook represents a team effort not just lim-ited to the three primary authors of the text: Dr. Petersen from Baylor, Dr. Lawrence W. Judge from Ball State University and Dr. John J. Miller from Troy University. Multiple individuals associated with Baylor Sport Management also contributed signifi-cantly to this project. Dr. Magnusen authored a chapter on Sport and Recreation Facilities as Leverageable Assets, and Sport Management doctoral student, Patrick Marsh, served as a lead author on two chapters and co-author on two other chapters. Alumnus Seth Dorsey (SPM ’15) co-authored a chapter on Facility and Event Impact and Legacy with Dr. Petersen, and four program graduate assistants (Amy Gaston, Jimmie Simpson, Tess Moore, and Jordan Strickland) also contributed to the research and editing process. Addi-tionally, two SPM Program alumni are included in the text within the practitioner spotlight feature: Jordin Westbrook (SPM ‘15) of SMG McLane Stadium and Robert Drumm (SPM ’10) SMG Superdome and Smoothie King Center.

After recently graduating from the Sport Management Program in the spring of 2017, Porter Ellett landed, in his words, “a dream start” to his career: working with the Kansas City Chiefs as the Senior Assistant to the Head Coach, Andy Reid. In an interview with Ellett, he talks about how he would like to either pursue coaching or becoming a GM and this opportunity allows him to explore both possibilities. Ellett shares he is tasked with a number of responsibilities based on the needs of Coach Reid. He helps with practice scripts, office and person-nel work, works with the players, sits in on meetings, and other various tasks.

While at Baylor, Ellett interned with Baylor SMG. This program along with the course work helped to prepare him for his current position. He learned the importance of detail and time management in the sport management field. We asked Ellett what advice he would give to future Sport Management Graduate Students: “Enjoy being there. Enjoy the people you interact with because the people in Waco and at Baylor are great. Capitalize on the relationships you build, and take the lessons and assign-ments and personalize them. Make them exciting for you so you can grow in the process.”

Graduate students in Baylor School of Education’s (SOE) Sport Management pro-gram joined the roar of a Dell Diamond stadium crowd with cheers and claps as they enjoyed a game of the Round Rock Express minor league. But they weren’t there for the baseball action; they were there to see sports marketing in action. As the sweltering Texas sun finally sank over the horizon, Dr. Jeff Petersen’s marketing class settled in for the Triple-A game, ending a full afternoon visit to the stadium, where the students met with sports marketing professionals and toured Dell Diamond, all facilitated by Round Rock Express General Manager Tim Jackson, BA ’08, MSEd ’09, graduate of the Sport Management Program. “The biggest thing is just getting [students] exposure,” said Petersen, Ph.D., associ-ate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership. “We do this summer trip where we come here and get an immersive experience by visiting with the front office staff, touring the facility from a marketing perspective, and then watching some of the marketing happen.” Petersen has been taking his sports marketing classes to Dell Diamond for five years. Each year, Petersen’s students have the chance to speak with marketing professionals. The Round Rock Express marketing panel for this trip included Jackson; Stu Scally, the director of ticket sales; Jill Cacic, vice president of public relations and communications; Cassidy MacQuarrie, manager of community relations; and Laura Fragoso, senior vice president of marketing. While many students are exposed to major league marketing through television coverage, minor league marketing strategies may be lesser known. Listening to the panelists offered students an inside scoop into a different perspective on sports marketing. “I want to work in sport management, and a lot of what they’re talking about and doing is exactly right,” said sport management graduate student Amy Gaston. “It’s about creating a moment that’s significant for the consumer — something they’ll remember and want to come back and recreate.” Following the discussion, students and panelists networked and mingled. Jackson then led a stadium tour, explaining marketing tools, signage, promos and campaigns implemented throughout the stadium. As Jackson also led students through the media box and control center of Dell Diamond, owned by Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, he explained Ryan’s lasting influence on the message of the stadium. Jackson said, “When Ryan is here, it’s all about the baseball.” The students wrapped up their visit by stay-ing for an evening game and watching the sports mar-keting lessons they learned in action. As Gaston prepares to begin her second year in Bay-lor’s Sport Management Program, she believes the trip will be great preparation for her future career. She said, “We do a lot of panel discus-sions with Dr. Petersen’s class, and he does a great job bringing in real-life practi-tioners. There’s only so much you can learn in class, so it’s nice to hear from people that are ‘in the trenches,’ living it every day. It’s also nice that [Jackson] is a program alum, so he understands where we’re coming from and the uniqueness that is Baylor Sport Management.”
