Reflection...

“ Elyria Catholic provided me with all the resources I needed to prepare me for the rest of my life. At EC, I was challenged both in and out of the classroom, as my classmates, teachers, and coaches pushed me to be better in my academics and extracurriculars. Beyond this, EC’s community provided me with friendships that will last a lifetime. Looking back at my high school years now, I cannot think of a better place to have spent it than Elyria Catholic.”

– Max Menner, Valedictorian, National Merit Finalist, Class of 2019

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER

4 Elyria Catholic High School Magazine

A message from the Principal Suzanne LesterAfter a two-year process of self-study and validation, Elyria Catholic High School has maintained full accreditation through the 2024-2025 school year.

The self-study and validation, although tedious, were worth the efforts. As a school community, we learned much about ourselves, both who we are as a school and where we want to be by the 2024-25 school year. After much reflection

and discussion, faculty members altered our mission statement and our belief statement to be a bit more concise. Elyria Catholic’s revised mission is:

To actively encourage young men and women to identify and celebrate their God-given gifts and fulfill their own intellectual, social, and spiritual potential within the Catholic tradition.

At Elyria Catholic, we believe:

• Students are granted individual gifts and talents by God to do His work. It is our responsibility to foster and develop them.

• As parents/guardians are the primary educators of their children, we must give them the encouragement and opportunity to participate in their child’s intellectual, social, and spiritual formation.

• Our primary role is to develop the whole person by passing on the Catholic faith, teaching Gospel values, and providing academic excellence.

• All students can learn. It is our responsibility to provide a variety of instructional approaches to meet learning styles.

• Faculty and staff must foster a love of learning to encourage students to live a life of service to God and others.

Faculty members, with input from both students and parents, arrived at two goals to be worked on over a four-year period. The Catholic identity goal is that students will deepen their personal faith relationship with Christ through prayer, faculty mentoring, family engagement, and service. The academic performance goal is that students will increase their initiative and self-direction through growth mindset, goal-setting and self-assessment, responding to faculty feedback, and providing feedback to peers.

The current year’s strategies are focused on prayer and growth mindset. Since prayer is a key element of a community that desires to make disciples, faculty and staff have adopted a renewed commitment to meaningful prayer in their classes and in extracurricular activities with the intent of helping to strengthen students’ personal relationships with Christ. As for growth mindset, a widely supported theory suggests that students’ learning behavior and beliefs have a lasting impact on their learning outcomes. Those who focus on learning as opposed to performance have a growth mindset, which helps them to overcome challenges faced in the

learning process. Prior to introducing the students to the concepts of growth mindset, faculty members are participating in professional development on these concepts themselves.

In addition to looking to the future, there is much the Elyria Catholic community has to celebrate now. Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, between twenty and thirty students voluntarily participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation monthly during lunch. Additionally, two seniors chose to be confirmed. Students in the junior and senior classes were able to participate in our inaugural Kairos Retreat, Kairos I. During the current school year, approximately thirty young men and sixty young women have elected to launch Men’s and Women’s Ministry Programs.

On the academic side, we are pleased to become a TEALS school as we have been the benefactor of Microsoft Philanthropies Technology Education and Literacy in Schools assistance. Through this program, we are able to offer an Introduction to Coding and Game Design course to our students. Additionally, with much-increased interest in our broadcasting course, we have offered Broadcasting III and IV. For our creative students, we now offer an Advanced Placement Studio Art class. We look forward to seeing all that our students create in these new elective offerings!

Elyria Catholic is excited to once again have a National Merit Semifinalist in our senior class. We are proud of Paige Miserandino who was also a member of our inaugural Robotics Team that competed in the World Championships last April. Paige is part of a senior class who collectively scored an average of 2.2 points higher than the state average across all four content areas and the composite on the ACT. Not to be outdone, last year’s graduating class of 92 students earned 34 Honors Diplomas at graduation and earned $7,203,544 in college scholarships!

Thank you for your continued support as we celebrate the present and, with your generosity, look forward to an even brighter future. Thank you for leaving your print on our engaged community!

The storied line in our Alma Mater, “loyalty that never dies,” can truly apply to Amy Butler’s 27 years of service as a Panther. She was loyal to EC even before her time as a student when, as a young girl, she would watch her father coach our Panthers on the football field. She is not afraid to tell you that she worked for her tuition while at EC at the local McDonald’s because she was so passionate about attending this school. Although her time at EC as President has ended, it is a testament to her commitment to Catholic education and this community that she be called on by the Diocese of Cleveland to be the Associate Superintendent for Secondary Schools.

Amy went on to Kent State University after graduating from Elyria Catholic in 1980. After some time in the corporate world she found herself back at EC as a coach, educator, and later, an administrator. She began her service here as a tennis coach, and then taught business after earning her teaching degree. As the climate in Catholic education evolved, Amy became the first Admissions Director for the school and began her service in administration. From there she wore many hats including Advancement Director, Principal, and eventually, President. Her knowledge of how all the different parts of the school operate guided her in her journey to become President, and helped her make significant improvements to the school.

During her tenure as President, Amy championed many projects. At the beginning of her term, she worked to develop a strategic plan to move Elyria Catholic forward. This plan took months of

development and interviews with alumni, community members, parents, students, and many others. Her commitment to listening and learning was instrumental in creating valuable goals within this plan. These goals were quickly checked off as Amy and her team worked tirelessly to accomplish them. This included the hiring of a Marketing Director and an Alumni Director, recruiting and forming key members of our community to take on bigger roles at EC through the Elyria Catholic Advisory Council, remodeling and building a state-of-the-art chemistry lab, the establishment of our Makerspace, renovations to the auditorium, and adding more computer science classes through the TEALS Program, and so much more. She is an advocate for the arts and an encouraging voice during athletic events. When

reflecting on all she cultivated, Amy’s love and admiration for this school is a pillar of hope for our future. Her “go getter” mentality has benefitted Elyria Catholic and put us on the path to becoming a leader and example within the Diocese.

Even after accomplishing so much in her four years as President, she believes and hopes her biggest impact on Elyria Catholic was through the Blessed Mother, Mary. Amy attributes her connection to Mother Mary to her grandmother. Every year after May Crowning Amy would always make an announcement to students asking them to email her if they would like to receive a Mary medallion as a way to grow their own love and devotion. When it comes to Mary and our faith Amy says, “I wanted to make an extra special effort to ensure Mary and our Lord were always highlighted, always spoken of, and shared with our students.”

When asked for her best advice on finding what is important in your life, and how to Leave Your Print she explains, “Identify what gets you excited and identify a passion. Even though you may only have that passion for five years or ten years, it’s okay to find another passion and move on. Be open to the call — rely on the Holy Spirit to get you through it.”

Thank you Amy for showing us how to Leave Our Print and how to leave EC better than we found it. We look forward to seeing all you accomplish at the Office of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Cleveland.

Alaysa began leaving her print at Elyria Catholic, where she was involved in multiple clubs like peer ministry, students against destructive decisions, drama club, and cheerleading. Alaysa’s impact on the community began on October 8, 2018, after using photography as an artistic and emotional outlet by photographing her children. She then started her photography business, ARuiz Photography.

Alaysa speaks on how photography impacts people saying, “Photos are a skill of art, they’re captivating. They grab you, and hold you still in that moment forever. A moment in time you’ll never get back.”

Seeing photography as not only a creative outlet, but one that Alaysa feels gives her a chance to be a part of others’ lives at their most vulnerable times; this is why she mainly takes photographs of weddings and families.

On her website, Alaysa writes about photography saying, “I find beauty in others and the stories they live to tell. Photography is more than a career for me, but my life.”

Alaysa attributes Elyria Catholic with teaching her skills like perseverance, sociability, and being genuine to yourself. Alaysa values the Catholic education that she received from St. Jude and Elyria Catholic, and works hard to make sure her kids receive that same education.

In addition to photography, Alaysa has three young children who inspired her love for photography, and a loving husband, Andrew ’12, whom she met at Elyria Catholic, who works at the Cleveland Clinic.

Alaysa speaks on why photography is important to her and how it affects those around her saying, “Holding those moments for those around me, to cherish and love forever.”

Elyria Catholic’s focus for the 2019 and 2020 school year is “Leaving Your Print,” which is centered around the idea of making an impact on the community. Sometimes making an impact on the community can seem like a daunting task, but it can truly be in the small duties that impact people’s lives that can change the community. Alaysa Ruiz, a graduate of the Class of 2012, is the perfect role model to look to for an example of a person who leaves their print on the community.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

This year’s school theme at Elyria Catholic is “Leaving Your Print.” Many alumni from EC have done this in a variety of ways around the world. Jeff Yungman is one who stands out.

Jeff Yungman graduated from EC in the class of 1969. He says that his interest in helping others who are not heard in the world began during his days at Elyria Catholic. As a young teenager, Jeff felt unheard himself in different aspects of his life.

After graduating from The Ohio State University with a major in sociology in 1973, Jeff’s post graduate jobs put him on a path to where he is today. From being a dishwasher straight out of school, to being a nursing assistant in the Ohio State Hospital, to becoming a New Orleans police office in 1976, Jeff went back to school to earn a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Public Health from Tulane University in 1980. Working as an investigator and a supervisor, Jeff moved into the position as Program Director at Covenant House. He also worked as a social worker in two middle schools.

Continuing on life’s journey, Jeff made his way to South Carolina where he became the Program Director at the Carolina Youth Development Center and then later becoming the Clinical Director of Crisis Ministries Homeless Shelter, which is now known as One80 Place. Jeff quickly learned that these individuals desperately needed legal services. Seeing a need and wanting to fill that need, Jeff, at age 53, enrolled in the Charleston School of Law. It was not an easy task, working at Crisis Ministries during the day, attending law school at night, and having a family with his wife and three children. Upon passing the bar in 2008, he became the director of the Crisis Ministries Homeless Justice Project at One80 Place. To his knowledge One80 Place is the only homeless shelter in the country employing a full-time lawyer to provide free legal service for the homeless or those facing a future of homelessness.

He is very passionate in helping those who have been marginalized or who have been ignored by our society. Every day, Jeff works with dozens of clients who seek his help to seek the justice that they deserve in life. He is very proud of the work that he has done over the past 20 years in helping people end their homelessness. Being able to provide legal services and a voice for those struggling over the past 12 years as a lawyer at One80 Place (the name changed to describe what they do for the people they serve) has made a difference in the lives of many.

“Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” I have tried to live by that quote, and my hope is that my students will do so as well.

Jeff continually works to make systemic changes for veteran’s treatment court, veteran’s child support initiative, and homeless court. “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” I have tried to live by that quote and my hope is that my students will do so as well.

Jeff continues to "Leave His Print" not only as the Director of Legal Services at One80Place, but also as an Adjunct Professor at the Charleston School of Law and a liaison with the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty. With the task of seeking solutions to the causes of homelessness, Jeff does not plan on retiring any time soon!

Hal Minnich is no stranger to Elyria Catholic High School. Hal’s graduating class was just the second class to fill the hallways of the then Elyria Catholic District High School. He says that he has many memories from high school, but one of the fondest is his time playing sports with his buddies.

He states that one time while he was tossing a football with his friends, one of them ran for a long throw, and as he went to make the catch, he fell into an eight foot sewer. (He recalls that no one was seriously injured!) It was moments like these for Hal that allowed him to discover what he wanted to do with his life….which is to give back to his community. After graduating from EC, Hal sought unique careers instead of going to college. Some of his favorite experiences as an early adult were going to barber school, working for Ridge Tool, and spending a year in Korea. Even through all of these experiences, Hal decided to come back to his alma mater and give back.

Hal is a founding member of Elyria Catholic Dad’s Booster Club which started forty-four years ago. Since then, he has contributed to building the football, baseball, and soccer fields. He recalls putting up stadium lights around the football field because, without these lights, all games were pushed to Sunday afternoons.

One of the most recent, and time-consuming, projects the boosters club has tackled is the painting of the gymnasium ceiling. Although it was far from being inexpensive, Hal says it is accomplishments like these that keep EC a fresh place to attend whether you are a current student or a visiting alumni like Hal.

Hal wants to give a special shout out and thank you to his fellow members of the Dad’s Booster Club, because without their hard work and diligent dedication, EC would not be what it is today. Thank you for Leaving Your Print!

Throughout the years, many students have come and gone through the doors of Elyria Catholic High School. Many have gone their own way, but there is one special man who has returned to EC after his graduation in 1953.

ALEXA OBERGOver the summer, Alexa Oberg ’20 was accepted into a weeklong pharmacy camp at an elite medical school, North East Ohio Medical School ( NEOMED) where they only accept pharmacists and doctors. Only 25 students from around the United States were hand selected via an essay that was submitted. Within the course of a week, Alexa learned many skillful techniques on how to become a pharmacist. “I look forward to enrolling and starting my career.” – Alexa Oberg ’20

ALEX CORRIGAN ’19Alex Corrigan volunteered over the summer at Camp Christopher for her Girl Scout Gold Award. Many of you probably remember celebrating Mass in the outdoor chapel as campers when you were in grade school. Alex worked to clear out overgrowth and poison ivy. She also sanded and stained the existing benches and then added five additional benches. The camp population had outgrown it over the years. They enjoyed having the expanded seating during summer camp this past year.

JACOB WALTHERA scout from Holy Trinity/St. Mary Troop 462, Jacob’s Eagle Scout project was to build and install two sub-irrigated raised planters at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception School in Avon. These learning beds are self-watering and will be used as part of the school’s STEM curriculum. In honor of National STEM Day on Friday, November 8th the learning beds were blessed after the 8:30 am Mass at St. Mary with the students and Jacob in attendance.

PATRICK, WILL AND SKYESeniors Patrick Delaney, Will Myers and Skye Rawson participated in Tolle Lege this summer. On a Friday night you can see the lights and hear the cheers from the corner of Poplar and Gulf. It all looks so seamless from the moment you walk in the gate and are greeted by ticket takers, 50/50 raffle ticket sellers, and concession stand parents providing tasty treats or cocoa to warm you. While everyone finds their seats or their special spots along the fence and awaits the band’s playing of the National Anthem or the players charging onto the field, little do they know how many hours of preparation it took to get to this moment. From painting the lines and the iconic Block EC centerfield, setting up of the field, readying the sidelines, preparing the evening’s announcements, grilling the burgers or making the walking tacos, to making sure that band equipment and treats for visiting bands are in place, visitors are unaware of what it takes to make athletics possible at EC. We are so blessed with the many alumni and parents who spend countless hours and have contributed so much to EC over the years. Thank you for making the welcoming lights and sounds from the corner of Poplar and Gulf possible.

“Kairos is a 4 day retreat designed to help encounter God ’s love at a deeper level. When I attended Kairos as a junior, I knew that I was at the beginning of something special happening at school. While I had attended other retreats with my parish youth group, this one was something special because it was the first time that I saw God face to face. I encourage all juniors and seniors to take advantage of this miraculous opportunity. You might think you are giving up a lot of time over a weekend, but you are gaining more than you could ever imagine.”

– Madelyn Wechter ’20

RETREATSEach class retreat centers on a theme. Last spring the juniors met and listened to Maggie Crag, a national Catholic speaker, share how Life with Jesus is an Adventure. Seniors gave witness talks about Be Not Afraid and enjoyed time working together and listening to each other. The freshmen worked on community building, while the sophomores spent time discovering what their gifts and talents are and how they can use them to glorify God.

AthleticsCOACH ROTHGERY ’80 EARNS 200TH CAREER VICTORY

Head girls basketball coach Eric Rothgery ’80 earned his 200th career victory as a head coach at Elyria Catholic this past winter. Rothgery has led the Panthers to two Regional Championships (2011, 2018) and numerous West Shore and Great Lakes Conference championships. The Panthers helped him reach this milestone in their 75-23 victory over Parma on December 12, 2018. “I am proud that I have been able to be a part of this program since 2008,” Rothgery said. “The wins are great, but it’s the relationships you build throughout the years that matter the most. Working with phenomenal coaches has made my job easy. Great, hardworking, committed players are the backbone of our program.” The Panthers claimed another Great Lakes Conference title and a regional runner-up finish in 2019.

As an Elyria Catholic graduate, Rothgery finds that success at home has made this journey even sweeter. “Being an alum certainly has made my time here special. I have been an EC sports fan for over fifty years.”

JAKOB HWANG SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEDAnother tradition began at this year’s May Crowning. Following our annual May Crowning we welcomed Dr. John Hwang, the father of Jakob Hwang ’18. This year Dr. Hwang presented the first ever Jakob Hwang Memorial Scholarship to junior Mackenzie Kemer. During his time at EC, Jakob shared his infectious smile, positive attitude, and complete trust and faith in God’s plan. May Crowning just seemed the perfect time to award this scholarship in Jakob’s name.

If you would like to remember Jakob by donating to the Jakob Hwang Memorial Scholarship, you can make an online contribution by going to elyriacatholic.com/jakobhwangscholarship or by sending your check payable to the Advancement Office/Jakob Hwang Scholarship at Elyria Catholic High School, 725 Gulf Rd., Elyria, OH 44035 or call Michelle Hoffman at 440.230.8618.

SCOTT HOLLAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPThis year following our Homecoming Mass, Randy and Jeanne Holland presented the Scott Holland Memorial Scholarship Award to juniors Faith Belza and Aidan Timko. Much like Scott Holland ’02, both Faith and Aidan have been recognized as students who are passionate and kind to others through their involvement in academics, athletics and extracurriculars. Scott’s greatest contribution was how he lived his life to the fullest, pursued his passions, and showed overwhelming kindness to everyone in his life. It is the family’s hope that this scholarship will assist Elyria Catholic students in achieving their passions in life and promoting kindness by keeping Scott’s spirit alive.

Elyria Catholic held its first Panther Night at the Races on Saturday, October 26. The event was sponsored by Savoy Insurance Group. It was great to see so many alumni and parents attend this fun and relaxing event. The Panther Club and Advancement Department collaborated on welcoming this event to Elyria Catholic. All proceeds benefited Elyria Catholic Athletes and Students. If you missed it this year, be sure to look for it again in the Fall of 2020.

The Kelly Foundation was established to carry on the spirit, positive influence and love for others that Kelly Ann Kramer, Elyria Catholic High School Class of 2007, embodied throughout her life. The Kelly Foundation held its second annual fundraiser Cornhole and “Que” for a Cause event at Elyria Catholic High School in September of 2018. In addition to a cornhole tournament and fabulous barbecue dinner, the event included unique raffle baskets and featured live music, as well as crafts and activities for children. Babysitting services were provided by our own Elyria Catholic students. The Kelly Foundation donated the proceeds from this event to provide tuition assistance to Elyria Catholic students. The Kelly Foundation returned to Elyria Catholic in September of 2019 to hold a similar event. This year, Elyria Catholic clubs and student organizations were asked to write grants to the foundation requesting support for their specific mission and activities. The Kelly Foundation awarded grants to our Model UN Club, Drama Club, Drone Racing Club, Robotics Team and our newly formed Mulieres Clarae Dei Women’s Ministry Group in addition to providing tuition assistance to Elyria Catholic students. The Kelly Foundation also supports the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank. The Executive Board of The Kelly Foundation includes Connie and Dale Kramer, Kelly’s parents, Dennis Kramer ‘03, Kelly’s brother; and Lori Ashyk, Kelly’s aunt; as well as Danielle Mueller and Kristin Gorney Kovesdy ‘07, Kelly’s lifelong friends.

Jim Ross, proud graduate of the class of 1952, recalled some of his memories of Elyria Catholic at a recent visit to EC. He shared that his roots go all the way back to when he was the President of Elyria Catholic’s first freshman class in 1949 when it was located at St. Mary School in Elyria.

Upon graduating from Elyria Catholic, Jim attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a freshman letter and two Varsity O letters for golf. In 1957 with a BS in Business Administration, Jim decided to return to Elyria, the community where he was raised, to work as a Certified Public Accountant for more than forty years. In 1978 he was inducted into the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame where several EC alumni, coaches and volunteers later joined him in receiving the same honor.

Jim’s fond memories of attending Elyria Catholic, along with his feelings that it was time to “Pay It Forward,” a phrase coined by Woody Hayes many years ago, are what inspired him to establish an endowed scholarship that current freshmen can apply for to help with tuition in their sophomore, junior and senior year. Jim hopes that his commitment to Elyria Catholic and his willingness to Leave His Print, may encourage others to do the same. If you are interested in helping to provide tuition assistance to Elyria Catholic students, please contact Michelle Hoffman at 440.230.8618 or by emailing her at [email protected]. You can join Jim in Leaving Your Print too!
