on America’s roads that rarelycomes to light: dim headlightbulbs and hazy headlight lenses,which may lead to reduced visibil-ity. As Daylight Savings Timenears, and kids hit the streets fortrick-or-treating, the importanceof clear nighttime visibility in-c re a s e s.

A chief culprit of dim head-lights is the plastic lens. Millionsof cars on the road today haveplastic lenses, which typicallydon’t hold up to weather and time.They may become hazed and yel-lowed, reducing the light outputfrom the headlamp. The problemincreases with the age of the lens,and with the average age of cars

on the road about 10 years old, theproblem is growing. In addition,the more sun or salt a vehicle isexposed to, the more likely thatits plastic headlight lenses maybe hazy. This is a common issueon many domestic and foreign au-tomobiles of all price ranges.

Weath-er-related accidents are some ofthe most prevalent but can belargely prevented if the properdriving techniques are followed.Some of the more dangerous driv-ing conditions include heavy rainthat causes hydroplaning, drivingon ice and driving in heavy snow.

H yd ro p l a n i n gHydroplaning occurs when wa-

ter on the roadway accumulatesin front of a vehicle’s tires fasterthan the weight of the vehicle canpush it out of the way. The waterpressure can push the vehicle upon a thin layer of water, essential-ly breaking the tires’ contact withthe road. In a matter of seconds, adriver can lose control and end upswerving out of his or her lane.

It is important to follow a fewguidelines to prevent hydroplan-ing. First, keep tires well main-

tained. Worn-out tread can con-tribute to hydroplaning, as can in-adequately inflated tires. Certaintread patterns are more capableof diverting water away from thetires. Ask a professional aboutwhich tire tread to choose.

Next, realize that the higher thespeed, the higher the propensityto hydroplane. At lower speeds, itis generally rare to hydroplane,unless the water puddles driventhrough are exceptionally deep.Reduce speeds when it is raining.

Also, lighter vehicles are moreprone to hydroplaning. Again, ifdriving a compact or lightweightvehicle, slow down when water ison the road.

Should hydroplaning occur, letoff the gas and do not apply thebrake or turn the wheels. Oncethe car slows down and retainstraction once more, steer andbrake accordingly.

IceIce is a problem that plagues

drivers when the temperaturedrops. While some ice can be de-

tected on the roadway, thin sheetsof ice blend in with the asphaltand are known as “black ice.”Black ice can be undetectable un-til a car begins to skid.

Many people have trouble driv-ing on icy roads. In fact, winterconditions often lead to accidents.More than 500 fatalities were at-tributed to snowy, icy roads in the2008-2009 winter season in the U.S.

It is important to make somemodifications to a vehicle if driv-ing on ice will be commonplacethis season. At the least, propertire inflation is important tomaintain traction. Tires shouldalso be checked for tread, as baldtires will do little to grip the road.

Individuals who want evenmore protection should considerswitching to snow tires for thewinter. These tires are made froma softer rubber so they can bettergrip the road. They may also fea-ture a different tire tread for evenmore traction. Snow chains canbe used to offer greater grip.However, speeds will have to be

greatly reduced when chains arein place.

Reducing speed is helpful whendriving in an inclement condition,including on ice. It helps a driverto better correct a situation andreact. If skidding is experienced,gently steer in the direction of theskid without applying the brakes.When traction is resumed, slowdown and correct the car.

Heavy SnowDriving in snow is different

from driving on ice, but theyshare some similarities. Snow canbe melting and freezing on roadssimultaneously, depending onwhether salt and sand have beenapplied by road service person-nel. Therefore skidding from hy-droplaning and ice may occur.

Another hazard from snow isreduced visibility. Driving underblizzard conditions is very dan-gerous. Wind and snow can causewhite-out situations, essentiallywiping out any visibility. In theseinstances, a driver should pullover to a safe area and wait outthe storm.
