Thanksgiving Turkey FactsDid you know that 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving? That equates to about 280 million turkeys sold annually just for Thanksgiving, which is about 7 billion pounds of turkey and $3 billion dollars in sales! No matter if you gobble up turkey, or Tofurky, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!
Fall & AutumnAutumn, also known as fall in North American English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter, in September (Northern Hemisphere) or March (Southern Hemisphere), when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier while the arrival of day becomes noticeably later, and the temperature cools down considerably. One of its main features is the shedding of leaves from deciduous trees.

Presidential ElectionVoting day for this year’s presidential election is Tuesday, November 8. This year’s election is the 58th in our nation’s history and we will elect our 45th president. Elections occur every four years and coincide with “leap year,” when the month of February has twenty-nine days, one more than usual. Do you know how the elections came to be held in November and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of the month? In the early days of our nation, most voters were farmers, so November was chosen as election month because it followed the planting and harvest seasons and still allowed enough time for votes to be counted before a new president was inaugurated in January of the following year. Election Day was originally set for Tuesday to allow voters to travel to their county’s government center on Monday, reserving Sunday as a day of worship.
Nowadays, the presidential election process begins in the spring of the year before an election, when candidates announce their intentions to run. Over the course of the next year, candidates campaign for a series of primary elections and caucus debates in order to win their party’s delegates, who represent each state at national party conventions. In late summer of the election year, each party holds their convention to nominate the candidate with the most delegates. Once the nominees have been chosen, citizens then get to weigh in by casting their ballots at polling stations all over the country in November, which declares the popular vote. However, elections do not stop there! In December, the Electoral College steps in. The College is made up of 538 electors who are selected in proportion to the results of the popular vote. A total of 270 electoral votes is needed to elect a president. Finally, after Congress counts the electoral votes in early January of the following year, a winner is officially determined. The newly-elected president is inaugurated into office on January 20.
Since 1919, Veterans Day has been observed on November 11. This holiday serves several purposes. It commemorates what used to be known as Armistice Day, a “temporary cessation of hostilities”
between Germany and the Allied nations that occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918,
during WWI. It also honors American veterans of all wars. Many cities organize Veterans Day parades and community dinners. In addition to attending these functions, you can honor veterans in even more personal ways by volunteering at a nearby Veterans Affairs hospital or writing letters of support to troops who are actively serving.
Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month. As you enjoy time with friends and family and all the scrumptious holiday dishes, find ways to be thankful. Take time to appreciate the small and simple things we tend to take for granted, such as the colors of nature, the sound of laughter, the sensation of water splashing on your palms, and a phone call from someone you love.
