Gewijzigde herdruk van het succesvolle handboek ‘Economie. Een inleiding’ De financiële crisis van 2007-2008, de inzinking van de economische acti-viteit in 2009, en de blijvende macro-economische turbulenties sinds 2010, brachten de economie volop in de belangstelling. De economische realiteit is complex en roept vele vragen op. Was de ‘Grote Recessie’ te vermijden? Waarom kijken burgers naar de overheid als reddingsboei? Waarin verschilt het Amerikaanse antwoord op de crisis van het Europese? …Antwoorden op die vragen zijn slechts mogelijk als men heldere begrippen hanteert en ze in de juiste verbanden plaatst. Economie. Een inleiding geeft een duidelijk overzicht van de economische wetenschap en haar inzichten, begrippen en verbanden. Het boek is geschikt voor iedereen, zowel stu-dent, docent, specialist als leek, die de basisprincipes van economie wil kennen en begrijpen.

Wat is er gewijzigd ten opzichte van de editie uit 2010?Drie jaar na de herziening van het handboek blijven de macro-economi-sche turbulenties groter dan ooit. Ze spelen zich af tegen de achtergrond van monetaire beleidsexperimenten: de ‘quantitative easing’ van de Fede-ral Reserve, of de ‘Abenomics’ in Japan. Sinds de vorige druk van dit hand-boek is de controverse over het in Europa gevolgde beleid alleen maar toegenomen.

Redenen genoeg om het boek te actualiseren met recente cijfers en gebeurtenissen:

• Inhetmacro-economischdeelvanhoofdstuk14totenmet26 werden het gros van de tabellen en grafieken geactualiseerd op basis van de ameco dataset van april 2013.• Verwijzingennaarderecentsteeconomischeontwikkelingen en debatten werden in de tekst toegevoegd. • Foutenuitdevorigeeditiewerdengecorrigeerd.

De structuur en inhoud van het boek bleven intact. Ook het oefenboek ‘Economie. Een inleiding: oefeningen’ – isbn 978 90 5867 852 2 – blijft onveranderd.

In 2013 viert karakter. tijdschrift van wetenschap

zijn tien jarig bestaan. De hoofdredacteurs van het tijdschrift

selecteerden vijftien essays uit de voorbije jaren, die samen een

beeld geven van de cultuur van de hedendaagse wetenschap.

In onweerstaanbaar veranderlijk gaat het over de wijze

waarop wetenschappelijke disciplines worden gevormd, over

concepten die zwarte dozen blijken te zijn, over carrières en

modes, over geleerden die activisten worden, over publieks-

wetenschap.

Elk van de gekozen essays wordt vergezeld door een repliek,

waarin be oefenaars van de wetenschap vanuit hun eigen prak-

tijk reflecteren op wat de wetenschap van vandaag maakt tot

wat ze is. De omgang met data, methoden en begrippen, de

organisatie van wetenschappe lijk werk, de rela tie met gebrui-

kers van wetenschap en de bredere samen leving: onweer-

staanbaar veranderlijk biedt een helder en verrassend

In de eerste helft van de 18de eeuw stond Jean-Philippe Rameau als componist in Frankrijk op eenzame hoogte, zeker wat het genre van het muziektheater betreft. Terecht kan zijn werk tot de hoogtepunten van de Franse laatbarok gerekend worden. Zoals Haendel voor de Italiaanse opera en het Engelse oratorium een betekenisvolle rol gespeeld heeft en Bach voor de Duitse cantate en de passie, zo is Rameau als hun tijdgenoot voor het Franse muziektheater een centrale � guur. Muziekgenres als de tragédie lyrique, het opéra-ballet, de comédie lyrique, de acte de ballet en de pastorale héroïque verrijkte hij met beklijvende meesterwerken. Daarnaast leverde hij een waardevolle bijdrage tot de kamermuziek, het repertoire voor klavecimbel, de ontwikkeling van de Franse cantate en het psalmmotet. Al even intrigerend als zijn compositorisch oeuvre is ook Rameaus levensloop: met zijn standpunten over de muziektheorie ontketende hij controverse zowel rond zijn persoon en als zijn werk. Hij werd het mikpunt van spot voor de � losofen van de Encyclopédie, met Jean-Jaques Rousseau als zijn vurigste tegenstander, maar werd evenzeer bespot en bekritiseerd door de ‘nieuwlichters’ die de Italiaanse muziek propageerden.

Met Jean-Philippe Rameau, 1683-1764. Een kennismaking schreef Ignace Bossuyt de eerste monogra� e in het Nederlands over Rameau als componist. De auteur situeert Rameaus oeuvre binnen de context van zijn tijd en bespreekt op een toegankelijke manier representatieve werken uit alle muziekgenres waarin hij actief was. Met deze kennismaking plaatst Bossuyt het fascinerende, maar nog te weinig bekende oeuvre van deze Franse barokcomponist in de kijker en gidst hij de luisteraar vakkundig door het muzikaal landschap van het laatbarokke Frankrijk.

Onderzoek naar de complexe negentiende-eeuwse stadsbelevingNegentiende-eeuwers hadden het niet bepaald gemakkelijk om hun eigen steden te begrijpen. Hoe kon het ook anders: industrialisering, technologi-sche vooruitgang en verhoogde mobiliteit veranderden de toenmalige leefruimte in een onwaarschijnlijk tempo. Dat bracht bruuske perspectief-wijzigingen teweeg en steeds veranderende belevingen van de ruimte die op hun beurt weer tot tal van uitdagingen, maar ook spanningen en para-doxen leidden. Werd de stad de ene keer met vrijheid, rijkdom, spektakel en artistieke inspiratie geassocieerd, de andere keer merkte men slechts de ongezondheid, de eenzaamheid, de zedeloosheid en de herrie ervan op.Inditboekgaanhistoricienliteratuurwetenschappersopzoeknaardezecomplexe beleving van de stedelijke ruimte in de negentiende eeuw. The experimental approach of science applied to artistic researchWe don’t know what we don’t know. This makes it difficult to imagine research that will produce new knowledge. In the sciences, the experi-mental approach has proved its worth in generating what subsequently requires understanding. Can the field of artistic research be inspired by recent thinking about the history and workings of science? How can art-ists engage with experimentation to extend artistic values and deliver future knowledge?In this book fourteen contemporary artists, musicians, and theorists en-gage with Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s theory of experimental systems to determine how experimentation can be put to work in the arts. An inter-view with Rheinberger himself probes research as a potentially shared space between the otherwise different activities of art and science.

Freud’s anthropology implies that humans are beings of the in-between. The human being

is essentially tied up between psychopathology and culture,and ‘normality’ cannot be defined in a theoretically

convincing manner. Philippe Van Haute and Tomas Geyskens call this Freudian

anthropology a patho-analysis of existence or a clinicalanthropology. This anthropology gives a new meaning to theNietzschean dictum that the human being is a ‘sick animal’.Freud, and later Lacan, first developed this anthropologicalinsight in relation to hysteria (in its relation to literature). The patho-analytic perspective progressively disappears in Freud’s texts after1905. This book reveals the crucial

moments of that development. In doing so, it shows clearlynot only that Freud introduced the Oedipus complex much

later than is usually assumed, but also that the theory of the Oedipus complex is irreconcilable with the project

of a clinical anthropology. The authors not only examine the philosophical meaning

of this thesis in the work of Freud. They also examine its avatars in the texts of Jacques Lacan and show how this project of a patho-analysis of existence inevitably obliges us

to formulate a non-oedipal psychoanalytic anthropology.

Ptolemy’s treatise (composed after 141 ad) offers an over-view of astrological science and had, together with his Al-magest, an enormous influence up until the 17th century. William of Moerbeke’s translation was made directly from the Greek and is a major scholarly achievement manifest-ing Moerbeke’s genius as a translator and as a scientist. First ever printed edition of the Latin translation of Ptolemy’s masterwork This is the first edition ever printed of Moerbeke’s Latin translation of Ptolemy’s celebrated astrological handbook, known under the title Tetrabiblos or Quadripartitum (opus). Ptolemy’s treatise (composed after 141 ad) offers an over-view of astrological science and had, together with his Al-magest, an enormous influence up until the 17th century. William of Moerbeke’s translation was made directly from the Greek and is a major scholarly achievement manifest-ing Moerbeke’s genius as a translator and as a scientist. This edition makes possible a better assessment of the great medieval translator and also contributes to a better understanding of the Greek text of Ptolemy’s masterwork.

gudrun vuillemin-diem is the editor of Moerbeke’s translations of the Metaphysics and Meteorology in the series of the Aristoteles latinus. carlos steel is Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Philosophy and former President of the Institute of Medieval Studies, KU Leuven. He is director of the Aristoteles latinus and is editor of Henry Bate, a friend of Moerbeke, as well as of Proclus, John Scottus Eriugena, and Albert the Great.

Strategies and characteristics of scournful criticism and fierce debate in the Humanist traditionThe programmatic nature of Renaissance humanism led the humanists to conflicts with those who represented other intellectual traditions, first and foremost the Scho-lastics. In addition, competition among humanists sparked violent quarrels. In the 16th century, the practice of dis-pute was partly reshaped by new national and confession-al divides. This volume sheds light on the characteristics and strategies of the humanist art of arguing through a series of case studies. The contributors show how human-ists constantly remodelled the art of arguing by exploiting in ever new ways the Classical rhetoric of blame and paved the way for the early modern culture of dispute.
